The Patient Experience Movement Moves On, Jason A. Wolf Phd
Patient Experience Journal
As we present Volume 2 of Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) we both recognize the contributions that helped launch this publication and acknowledge the work that helped build the foundation of the broader research exploration in the emerging field of patient experience. On this base of knowledge we have worked to establish a new home for expanding the exploration of new ideas and practices through this publication. The importance of building, supporting and sustaining an outlet for research in patient experience is grounded in the belief that positive patient experience is good for healthcare, it is good for the people who …

Panel: The Architectural Touch: Gestural Approaches To Library Search, Andreas Kratky, Virginia Kuhn, Susan Luftschein, Michaela Ullmann
Digital Initiatives Symposium
This panel centers on the LibViz project—a touch and gesture-based interface that allows users to navigate through library collections using visual queries—and the issues surrounding such efforts. The LibViz project, for which we have done initial research and constructed a prototype, aims to increase the discoverability of library materials, particularly those of non-textual objects, which are difficult to access via traditional search and which do not circulate. Many collections are currently preparing large scale digitizing of threedimensional objects and it is imperative to develop appropriate methods to work with this new kind of data. The established methods only do a …
Evaluation Of Field-Based Learning In A New Online Sustainability Course, William Forbes
Evaluation Of Field-Based Learning In A New Online Sustainability Course, William Forbes
Bright Ideas Conference
Sustainability is a relatively new field simultaneously addressing economic health, environmental amenities, and social issues. Sustainable Community Assessment and Planning (SUS 350) is a new course in the Sustainable Community Development major, minor, and undergraduate certificate at Stephen F. Austin State University. It is designed to introduce students to: a) varied methods of data collection; b) complex community planning issues; c) synthesis of economic, environmental, and social issues. Distance (online) education is not typically associated with field-based learning. However, field work in sustainability can be encouraged through activities such as: monitoring energy/cost saving; measuring biological status; and citizen social surveys. …

Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry
Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry
Bright Ideas Conference
This presentation will specifically discuss research involving people with disabilities and how those serving on Institutional Review Boards (IRB) need to expand their understanding of this population when it comes to research participation and language used with participants.
The Belmont Report (1979) provides the three guiding ethical principles for conducting research:
(1)respect for persons, which includes autonomy,
(2)beneficence, and
(3)justice.
These should be applied to all populations and understandably there should be stricter regulations when dealing with marginalized populations but these “restrictions” need to be made with understanding about these populations.
House Of Compensation: Predictors Of Compensation-Based Psrs, Phillip Madison, Al Greule
House Of Compensation: Predictors Of Compensation-Based Psrs, Phillip Madison, Al Greule
Bright Ideas Conference
In America, socializing with friends is now a functional alternative to watching television. This study draws from research on intrapersonal communication and media effects to ask “What functions and characteristics of parasociability predict parasocial compensation for real-life interaction?” We combined data from two surveys, arguing that parasocial thinking, when functioning for purposes of internal rehearsal and self-understanding, is characterized by rehearsal, variety and self-dominance -- all of which predict parasociability as compensation for human interaction. Retroactive parasocial thinking negatively predicted compensation.

Teacher Survey: Common Core Standards, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for K-12 English language arts (ELA) and mathematics were adopted by the Arkansas State Board of Education in July 2010. Teachers have been implementing CCSS in their classrooms for several years, and this spring students across the state are being assessed on CCSS through the PARCC assessments. In February 2015, Governor Hutchinson announced the formation of a Council on Common Core Review, and the Office for Education Policy began a survey of Arkansas public school teachers to gather their opinions on this important topic. In this brief, we will share the preliminary findings from …
Public Transit And Property Values: Did The Metro Blue Line Affect Home Prices In Minneapolis?, Clemens A. Pilgram
Public Transit And Property Values: Did The Metro Blue Line Affect Home Prices In Minneapolis?, Clemens A. Pilgram
Economics Honors Projects
This study estimates the accessibility premium commanded by single family homes located near LRT stations using home sales data from Minneapolis covering 1990 to 2014. The region’ first LRT, the “Blue Line”, was announced in 1998 and opened in 2004. I find mixed evidence for an increase in home values following the introduction of LRT service to South Minneapolis using a repeat sales model. My central estimate suggests that no such premium exists when including all years of data. However, limiting my data to fewer years of operation, I am able to reproduce prior studies’ positive premiums.
Negotiating The Neighborhood: The Role Of Neighborhood Associations In Urban Planning Processes, Lane K. Holden
Negotiating The Neighborhood: The Role Of Neighborhood Associations In Urban Planning Processes, Lane K. Holden
Sociology Honors Projects
To promote collaborative urban planning, the United States Federal Government requires that city and regional governments consult communities affected by planning processes. Neighborhood associations were originally created to engage community members in local social justice issues in order to meet this mandate. Relying on these organizations raises questions about whether they fulfill their potential: what role do community members play in urban planning? Do neighborhood associations feel like they participate effectively in the urban planning process? How do these associations perceive the extent to which the government uses their input? To address these questions, this study examines perceptions of urban …
Unequal Democracy: The Political Position Of Croats In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Valentino Grbavac
Unequal Democracy: The Political Position Of Croats In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Valentino Grbavac
Political Science Honors Projects
Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been marginalized during the last 15 years. Bosniaks have elected a Croat member of the Presidency and formed a federal government twice without legitimate Croat support, completely ignoring Croat electoral will. Bosnia and Herzegovina is at a crossroads today, choosing between the potential for a prosperous future in the EU and the status quo. Reforms of government structures are necessary in order to solve the Croat issue and allow Bosnia and Herzegovina to ascend to the EU. In this paper I map out the history of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the 1990s …
Courtroom To Classroom: Judicial Policymaking And Affirmative Action, Dylan Britton Saul
Courtroom To Classroom: Judicial Policymaking And Affirmative Action, Dylan Britton Saul
Political Science Honors Projects
The judicial branch, by exercising judicial review, can replace public policies with ones of their own creation. To test the hypothesis that judicial policymaking is desirable only when courts possess high capacity and necessity, I propose an original model incorporating six variables: generalism, bi-polarity, minimalism, legitimization, structural impediments, and public support. Applying the model to a comparative case study of court-sanctioned affirmative action policies in higher education and K-12 public schools, I find that a lack of structural impediments and bi-polarity limits the desirability of judicial race-based remedies in education. Courts must restrain themselves when engaging in such policymaking.
The Preschool Puzzle: Exploring Variations In Early Childhood Education Teacher Quality Across States, Alice Rockswold
The Preschool Puzzle: Exploring Variations In Early Childhood Education Teacher Quality Across States, Alice Rockswold
Political Science Honors Projects
There is a growing consensus in the early childhood education community that it is necessary to raise the qualifications of preschool teachers. Yet, little is known about why rigorous degree and training standards have advanced further in some states than others. In this analysis, I explore various political and demographic factors that might account for the uneven support for such standards, with special attention to the role of Head Start as a driver of quality, given its presence and variation in strength across states. Using longitudinal data from the National Institute of Early Childhood Education, I find weak evidence that …
Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen
Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen
Senior Honors Projects
Sexual assault is a serious, traumatic incident that is all too common on college campuses. Following the ordeal, those who are assaulted are often blamed. Victim blame occurs when the victim, rather than the perpetrator of a crime, is held at least partially responsible for the crime. This study seeks to determine the values that lead to victim-blaming behavior. After responding to the Ambivalent Sexism Scale, Belief in a Just World Measure, Sexual Script Scale, and Updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, participants read a vignette depicting an encounter where an individual was not physically able to consent to a …

What Comes From The Crypt, Erika Simpson
What Comes From The Crypt, Erika Simpson
Political Science Publications
"What Comes from the Crypt?" by Erika Simpson examines the contentious plan by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to store over 200,000 cubic meters of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in underground caverns near Lake Huron. Despite a federal panel's endorsement, the proposal faces strong opposition from local municipalities, environmental advocates, and First Nations. Opponents raise concerns about the site's long-term safety, potential environmental hazards, and the integrity of the regulatory bodies involved. The plan has also sparked international apprehension, especially among American officials and municipalities worried about the Great Lakes' freshwater supply. Critics argue that nuclear waste management decisions require …

Xsd: The Path From Excel To Xml: The Basics: Mapping Elements And Attributes, Amelia Mowry
Library Scholarly Publications
Working with metadata often means moving it between various formats. One problematic move to make is from a spreadsheet to an XML file. This paper will describe the basics of using an XSD to map a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to XML.
Moving metadata can be a messy process, especially when the data is older. Data often comes out of legacy systems as csv files, tab-delimited files, or Excel files. Moving data from these formats into XML can prove to be a challenge. I have also found it beneficial to do some initial data cleaning in spreadsheet form. This allows for …

Honors Projects
Abstract
According to an extensive 2013 survey conducted by the National Eating Disorder Association which examined 165 different college campuses to see what was being done on campuses nation wide to spread awareness about disorders as well as treat them. There is still a significant gap in perceived need and available counseling or nutritional services by staff specializing in eating disorders on college campuses throughout the country” (National Eating Disorder Association). Therefore, the purpose of this honors project is to develop a comprehensive training guide for resident advisors on Bowling Green State University’s campus to utilize in order to support …
