Migrant Remittances, Population Ageing And Intergenerational Family Obligations In Sri Lanka, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Migrant Remittances, Population Ageing And Intergenerational Family Obligations In Sri Lanka, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
As Sri Lanka’s population ages, its migrant women face a difficult choice: should they work abroad to remit money to provision their families, or should they stay at home to look after elderly kin? Although numerous studies have explored migration’s effects on children, fewer works focus on issues of elder care. This essay presents contextualizing information on transnational migration from Sri Lanka and the rapid ageing that is transforming the country’s population structure from a pyramid with many youth and few elders into a column. Using qualitative ethnographic data gathered from a labour-sending village in southern Sri Lanka, this anthropological …
Childhood Maltreatment Predictors Of Trait Impulsivity, Tiffany D. Russell, Amy Veith, Alan R. King
Childhood Maltreatment Predictors Of Trait Impulsivity, Tiffany D. Russell, Amy Veith, Alan R. King
Psychology Faculty Publications
This chapter provides a summary of empirical evidence linking childhood maltreatment and trait impulsivity. While biological contributors to impulsivity may be substantial, this review speculates that childhood and adolescent contributors may potentially alter the developmental trajectory of this personality trait in important ways. An analysis of original data (N = 401) regarding child maltreatment associations (childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, sibling abuse, peer bullying, corporal punishment, and exposure to domestic violence) with trait impulsivity as measured by the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 was also conducted. Adult respondents were assigned to extreme child abuse categories based on their retrospective self-reports. …
Investigating Categorization Preferences For Online Dating Sites, Scott Morrissette
Investigating Categorization Preferences For Online Dating Sites, Scott Morrissette
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine whether a three-category (3C) system for classifying profiles on online dating sites provides advantages over a two-category (2C) system as decision makers evaluate a long list of profiles. Two groups of single heterosexual or bisexual women ages 20 to 30 reviewed a list of 60 male profiles on simulated online dating sites to choose which profiled man they would most like to learn more about. One group (n = 53) evaluated the profiles using a 2C system; the other group (n = 56) used a 3C system. After making their choice, women …
An Investigation Of Correlates To Compliant Sex In College Students, Elizabeth-Ann R. Viscione
An Investigation Of Correlates To Compliant Sex In College Students, Elizabeth-Ann R. Viscione
Senior Honors Projects
Background: Compliant sex occurs when an individual agrees to participate in unwanted sexual activity that does not involve coercion from one's partner (Vannier & O'Sullivan, 2010). Previous research has found that consenting to unwanted sexual activity is prevalent, with some studies reporting over one-third to as high as sixty percent of their participants engaging in undesired sex (O'Sullivan & Allgeier, 1998; Kennett, Humphreys, & Bramley, 2013). Both men and women consent to unwanted sex, with women usually complying more frequently (Impett & Peplau, 2003; Vannier & O'Sullivan, 2010). Compliant sex has been reported as more unexpected, less pleasing, and …

Sexual And Gender Based Violence (Sgbv) In Post- Conflict Northern Uganda, Emily Thomesen
Senior Honors Projects
There is a sweet odor of earth and mangos as the sun rises over the fields of rice and pineapples. The silence of the morning is broken by the rising voices of women congregating together to worship as their little children dance to the music of their mothers’ voices. In the center of the African safari a refugee has been established for these mothers struggling under the weight of war and poverty. They learn the skills they need to provide food for their families, and counseled through the trauma of their pasts. Seven years ago this land was site of …
Significance Of Mentoring Students In Public Schools: A Literature Review And Naturalistic Observation Of Academic & Socio-Emotional Implications, Brittney A. Easter
Significance Of Mentoring Students In Public Schools: A Literature Review And Naturalistic Observation Of Academic & Socio-Emotional Implications, Brittney A. Easter
Senior Honors Projects
Public schools today are becoming populated with increasingly diverse student bodies. These unique backgrounds include differences in race, ethnicity, culture, and socioeconomic status. While this diversity can lead to positive social outcomes, it creates an issue of achievement gaps. Challenges students may face at home can cause academic difficulties, placing some learners behind others in a classroom. With increasing class size, teachers have less ability to give one-on-one time or even slow down lessons. As a result, only a small number of students finish senior year of high school at a level that makes them prepared to enter college (Bettinger, …
Diplomatic Normalization Between The Us And Cuba In Light Of Recent Changes In Us Foreign Policy More Generally, Ethan Zawatsky, Ashley Gemma
Diplomatic Normalization Between The Us And Cuba In Light Of Recent Changes In Us Foreign Policy More Generally, Ethan Zawatsky, Ashley Gemma
Senior Honors Projects
We analyze normalization of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba. We first examine the causes of previous normalizations with Vietnam and China. From these cases, we identify factors that are key to the normalization process. These include political turnover, economic interests, other special interest groups, public sentiment, and what we refer to as the Lawnmower Effect. This effect is observed when one or both nations attempt to reopen diplomatic ties only to continually fail to establish relations due to the endurance of underlying political issues. We use the Multiple Streams Framework (a policy formulation theory) in order to evaluate …
Associations Between Family Functioning And Adolescent Health Behaviors, Megan S. Fleming
Associations Between Family Functioning And Adolescent Health Behaviors, Megan S. Fleming
Senior Honors Projects
Background: The obesity epidemic has been a concern across the globe, affecting about 20% of adolescents in the U.S. Physical activity and nutrition-related behaviors that develop during adolescence carry through into adulthood. Adolescents’ perceptions of how their family functions may be associated with health behaviors, including physical activity and diet.
Objective: To determine whether there is an association between perceived family functioning and adolescent health behaviors among a national sample of adolescents aged 11 to 16 who participated in the 2009-2010 Health Behaviors of School-Aged Children survey.
Methods: Participants reported on demographics and measures of family function, which included …
The Theology And Agency Of Love As The Substance Of Kingian Non-Violent Philosophy And Activism., Matthew Quainoo
The Theology And Agency Of Love As The Substance Of Kingian Non-Violent Philosophy And Activism., Matthew Quainoo
Senior Honors Projects
The theology of Love focuses on King’s understanding of God as love:
A Research Abstract (Project Summary)
Problem: Almost 50 years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., controversy continues to swirl around the motivational forces that inspired the nonviolence approach employed by King in his fight for equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Some scholars argue that Kings was inspired by such advocates of nonviolence such as Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha Shakyamuni. Others believe that Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence was an expression of the Christian theology of God …
Music, Emotion Regulation, & Distress Tolerance: Investigating How Music May Influence Distress Tolerance In College Students, Marie Jaedee Wood
Music, Emotion Regulation, & Distress Tolerance: Investigating How Music May Influence Distress Tolerance In College Students, Marie Jaedee Wood
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Although music has been studied in the context of emotion regulation, there has been little or no research between the relationship between music and distress tolerance. In this study, participants were brought into the lab to fill out surveys, listen to positive, negative, or neutral music, and complete an emotional distress tolerance task while music was still playing. Positive and negative affect was evaluated throughout the study. Positive Affect was not directly influenced by music but was decreased during the distress tolerance task. The neutral and positive music both lowered negative affect while the distress tolerance task significant increased positive …
From Rural Street Theater To Big City Extravaganza: The Meaning Of The Manaus Boi-Bumbá In An Urbanizing Brazil, Margaret Kathleen Watson
From Rural Street Theater To Big City Extravaganza: The Meaning Of The Manaus Boi-Bumbá In An Urbanizing Brazil, Margaret Kathleen Watson
Anthropology ETDs
This is an ethnographic study of the boi-bumbá festival of Manaus, capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas. I examine this traditional Brazilian folkloric performance as it is being reworked to express a modern, global identity for urban Amazonians. Long seen as a key site to understand racial relations in Brazil, the boi-bumbá festival tells the story of the death and resurrection of a ranchers beloved bull. The earliest recorded versions of the Brazilian bull festival portray the economic and social relations on an 18th century colonial cattle ranch in the country's northeast. When the festival came to be performed …

An Exploratory Study Of Social Media Use Among Nonprofit Hospitals, Demitra C. Calivas
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Healthcare is a multi-faceted and complex organizational and social issue that affects many stakeholders (e.g., the ill, family, care taker, health institutions, etc.). Little research has examined how healthcare providers engaged with their targeted audiences on various social media. This thesis examined how nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in the healthcare industry use social media as a dialogic means to strategically engage with their stakeholders. This study conducted content analysis of the social media messages by four nonprofit research hospitals: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Lovejoy and Saxton’s (2012) “Information, …
Drosophila Tone Preference During Oviposition, Alexa Christine Decker
Drosophila Tone Preference During Oviposition, Alexa Christine Decker
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Evidence shows that Drosophila melongaster take into account the environmental factors such as substance, temperature, texture, and direct threats in order to provide protection for their offspring; young drosophila utilize experienced drosophila's olfactory cues for informed site selection. Their site selection is indicative of what drosophila view as beneficial. Since they have near-field hearing, drosophila may integrate sound into their deciding factors. If drosophila utilize sound as a deciding factor then a tone within their hearing range and similar to the tone their wings produce during flight such as a 250 Hz tone could have positive or negative associations. In …
Investigation Of Automatic Access To Spatial Representations Of Magnitude, Jaclyn Marie Wiener
Investigation Of Automatic Access To Spatial Representations Of Magnitude, Jaclyn Marie Wiener
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In the SNARC (Spatial Numeric Association of Response Codes) effect relatively small numbers are processed faster on the left hand side and relatively large numbers are processed faster on the right hand side, implying a spatial mental representation of numbers that might be conceptualized as a mental number line (Dehaene, Bossini, & Giraux, 1993). Walsh (2003) proposed that time, space, and quantity are part of a generalized cognitive system that processes different facets of magnitude. If this is true, we investigated whether the SNARC-like effect reported with magnitude of circle is a strong or weak automatic process. In the case …
Cooperation Of Authority, Nathan Kemper
Cooperation Of Authority, Nathan Kemper
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
What is the place of authority and what effects does it have on the behavior of individuals? This has historically been a question addressed in social psychology literature (see Milgram, 1963; Zimbardo, 1974; 2007). Traditionally researchers in this paradigm focus on the situational effects of assigned authority on underling positions in asymmetric power structure settings (e.g. the “teacher” and “learner” in Milgram, 1963). The current study sought to place focus on the individual in the authority role while engaged in a cooperative pay-off game. Thirty-eight students (N = 38) were recruited to participate in two trials of the Prisoner’s Dilemma …
A Biometric Analysis Of Mate Choice Copying In People, Jonathan Lenhardt
A Biometric Analysis Of Mate Choice Copying In People, Jonathan Lenhardt
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Mate choice copying is the notion that a person or animal, after observing another choosing a romantic or sexual partner, will perceive that partner as more attractive and possibly attempt to acquire that same partner for themselves. Using measurement of pupil size in response to the presentation of pictures of men and women both alone and with a neutral or admiring partner, it was hypothesized that such a biometric measure could substantiate previous research that has supported the evidence of mate choice copying in people. This study's methodology complements that of previous studies utilizing questionnaires to measure the attractiveness of …
Nietzsche And The Politics Of Suffering, Candice Barbara Maneri
Nietzsche And The Politics Of Suffering, Candice Barbara Maneri
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Friedrich Nietzsche’s critique of the West is just as poignant now as it was at the time of his writing. Arguably, his commentary on nihilism, decadence and the last men are of special interest, because of the ways in which we currently see his predictions as they function in the modem world. Nietzsche challenges us throughout his work to respond to the claim of the madman in “The Parable of the Madman” - what have we done to make ourselves worthy of the death of God? For Nietzsche, the idiosyncratic niceties of modem society are just residuum of the herd …
The Relationship Of School Counselors’ Disabilities Competence With Self-Efficacy And Pre-Service Training And The Influence Of Experience, Training, And Self-Efficacy On Disabilities Competence, Anthony Cannella

How Much Is That Soup? : An Evaluation Of How Taste Is Influenced By Price, Monica Selene Jimenez
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Extrinsic and intrinsic cues play a vital role in the judgment and evaluation of food. The effect of price (i.e., extrinsic cue) on expected and actual liking ratings was studied. There were three independent experiments done in this study. Experiment 1 was done to determine the prices used in the two subsequent experiments. In Experiments 2 and 3 subjects rated the expected (Experiment 2) and actual (Experiment 3) liking of the same brand of tomato soup presented at three different price levels: $2.50 (low), $3.25 (average), and $5.50 (high). In addition to the liking judgment, subjects were asked to evaluate …

International Dating Violence Study: A Look Between Parental Status And Psychological Aggression, Samantha Winzenried
International Dating Violence Study: A Look Between Parental Status And Psychological Aggression, Samantha Winzenried
Social Welfare
Dating Violence occurs in many forms and can be committed by anyone (Wekerle & Wolfe, 1999). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are four core types of intimate partner violence: physical violence, sexual violence, threats of physical or sexual violence, and psychological/emotional violence. This study examines the relationship between current parental status and psychological aggression toward a partner. Data are drawn from the International Dating Violence Study collected from more than 14,000 students in 68 universities in over 30 countries worldwide (Straus, International Dating Violence Study, 2001-2006, 2011). Data were collected using two different scales the …
The Relationship Between Positive Parenting Experiences In Childhood And Perpetration Of Violence In Adult Dating Relationships, Annette Vernon
The Relationship Between Positive Parenting Experiences In Childhood And Perpetration Of Violence In Adult Dating Relationships, Annette Vernon
Social Welfare
Dating Violence is the perpetration of violence within a dating relationship. Negative experiences in childhood have been linked to dating violence through much research. This is often explained by Socialization theory (Bandura, 1971) which posits that observing and experiencing a pattern of behavior during childhood can lead to the adoption of that pattern of behavior as adults. Drawing from this theory, individuals who experience positive parenting in childhood learn and develop a supportive relationship style and, therefore, should commit violence against a dating partner as adults with less frequency. This project examines the relationship between positive parenting during childhood and …

An Analysis Of Media Portrayals Of Edward Durell Stone’S University At Albany Campus 1962-2014, Emily Pfeil
Communication
The University at Albany campus designed by Edward Durell Stone has been a frequent topic in the media throughout the past fifty years. Coverage was analyzed in a sample of 80 local and national publications including magazines, newspapers, yearbooks, and architectural journals. The tone of coverage was rated from very negative to very positive. A variety of themes were found in the publications including discussion of Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s vision for the SUNY system, higher ideals of architecture and art, an evolving campus, and how limited funding reduced the scope of the design. Most of the articles were fairly positive …
Intermittent White-Collar Offenders: Who They Are And How To Stop Them, Mark Edward Correia
Intermittent White-Collar Offenders: Who They Are And How To Stop Them, Mark Edward Correia
Criminal Justice
This paper examines intermittent white-collar offenders. Intermittent offenders represent the most dangerous of white-collar offenders as they are criminally dormant for years at a time and commit deviant acts when the opportunity presents itself. It is for this reason that they are classified as “opportunity seekers.” This paper will discuss previous white-collar crime research and assert that white-collar offenders are predisposed to crime. In addition, a modern definition for white-collar crime will be introduced. Following the analysis of the intermittent white-collar offender characteristics, real-world applications on how to dissuade offenders from participating in white-collar crime will be discussed. The onus …
