Media And Self Representative Perceptions: Deception In Online Dating, Lindsay Hildebrandt
Media And Self Representative Perceptions: Deception In Online Dating, Lindsay Hildebrandt
Honors College Theses
Even with the increasing popularity of online dating, stigmas surrounding this form of internet connection persist. Since society is inundated with images of deception in online dating, those who have never experienced online dating may believe that mass media accurately represents this type of communication. This study’s main research question asks if perceptions about online dating differ between users and non-users; furthermore, these differences will be taken into account when regarding the prominence of mass media in shaping these impressions.
Currently, digital communication is a societal norm; more and more of our lives are documented and facilitated by the internet. …
Chinese Foreign Direct Investment In The Caribbean, Kimberly A. L. T. Stephenson
Chinese Foreign Direct Investment In The Caribbean, Kimberly A. L. T. Stephenson
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of trade patterns and market size in a short time period, in order to identify indicators of the objectives for Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Caribbean region. Key questions assessed are: What makes the Caribbean particularly advantageous for Chinese investors and how does the host country benefit? Is a higher level of trade, or wealthier markets, associated with higher Chinese FDI? Is China pursuing some foreign policy objectives with FDI in the region? I hypothesize that Chinese FDI is associated with trade, natural resources, or certain foreign policy …

Forging Political Will From A Shared Vision: A Critical Social Justice Agenda Against Neoliberalism And Other Systems Of Domination, Renato M. Liboro
Psychology Faculty Research
Due to pervasive inequalities and inequities in society, many people have a difficult time envisaging a just society, let alone how to go about actualizing such an aspiration. A critical reflection on the concept of a just society and the role that community psychologists and other advocates can play in upholding a critical social justice agenda in their research and civic engagement, particularly against neoliberalism and other systems of domination, is discussed. As part of a proffered framework, four tasks are proposed to fulfil the role: (1) raising public critical consciousness, (2) convincing people of the possibility of change, (3) …

Confirmatory And Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Mini-Ipip With A Multi-Institutional Sample Of First-Year College Students, Richard M. Wielkiewicz
Psychology Faculty Publications
The Mini-IPIP was administered to 4,292 first-year college students as part of a multi-institutional study of leadership beliefs. An exploratory principal components analysis using varimax rotation with Kaiser Normalization and listwise deletion of missing data resulted in a five-component rotated solution accounting for 56% of total variance. Fit indices for a confirmatory factor analyses were: χ2 = 3,079.12, df = 160; CFI = .844; RMSEA = .069. The study supported continued use of the Mini-IPIP when a short and convenient measure of personality is desired.

Work-Life Balance, Identity Salience And Break Taking Behaviors In Indian Expatriates, Pooja Bangalore Vijayakumar
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study focuses on the challenges faced by Indian expatriates working in the IT industry in the USA. It specifically examines participants’ work-nonwork role relationship quality, identity salience, and break taking behaviors. The sample for this study consisted of 415 Indian expatriates working in the IT industry. A computational tool called PROCESS was used to test the path analysis-based moderation and mediation analyses and their integrated form of conditional process models to determine whether work-nonwork role relationship quality mediates the relationship between work-related stressor and wellbeing. The relationships among work-related stressors, work-nonwork role relationship quality, and wellbeing were examined, while …
Music Helps Me Do My Homework: A Student's Conundrum, Edward A. Christopher
Music Helps Me Do My Homework: A Student's Conundrum, Edward A. Christopher
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Past research has demonstrated that music often negatively impacts performance on a variety of cognitive tasks, including tasks relevant to academia. However, there are discrepancies in the literature, including a handful of instances where no effect of music is observed. The present study tests the novel hypothesis that working memory capacity moderates the effect of music on the performance of academic tasks. Undergraduate students worked on reading comprehension and math tasks under both music and silence conditions, before completing a battery of working memory assessments. While music led to a significant decline in performance overall, working memory capacity moderated this …
Antecedent Conditions Of Shared Leadership: An Examination Of Team Personality Composition, Shared Leadership, And Team Effectiveness, Nicole Wild
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study examined the antecedent conditions necessary for shared leadership to develop in teams and enhance team effectiveness. An overview of the research on traditional leadership, shared leadership, and team personality composition examined the evidence in support of using team agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience to predict shared leadership in teams. The study sample consisted of manufacturing employees at an appliance manufacturing plant. It was proposed that team agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience would significantly predict shared empowering leadership in teams, which subsequently would predict team effectiveness. Results of multiple regression revealed no significant relationships between team …
Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity Psychological Well-Being And Stress In A College Population, Hannah K. Wike
Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity Psychological Well-Being And Stress In A College Population, Hannah K. Wike
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study evaluated the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being moderated by physical activity in college-age participants. Previous research suggests physical activity relates to lower stress levels (Nguyen‐Michel, Unger, Hamilton, & Spruijt‐Metz, 2006). Additionally, research has found physical activity is connected with overall well-being and lower levels of mental health issues. The results from an online survey collection (n=291) suggest that physical activity, at least as operationalized in the study, does not moderate the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being. However, perceived stress does have a significant relationship with psychological well-being. Also, the motive for physical activity, …

Stereotype Threat And Ocd: The Impact Of Messy Vs. Clean Environments On Cognitive Test Performance, Ellen Rebecca Kendall
Stereotype Threat And Ocd: The Impact Of Messy Vs. Clean Environments On Cognitive Test Performance, Ellen Rebecca Kendall
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Stereotype threat has been researched in a variety of contexts such as African Americans' intellect, older adults' memory, and women's performance in math. Despite this extensive research, little has been done in the domain of mental illness. This study examines whether stereotype threat can be induced in people high in OCD symptoms. I hypothesized that, when given explicit information about their OCD tendencies, individuals high in OCD symptoms would perform less well on cognitive tests in a messy than a clean environment compared to those low in OCD symptoms. Group testing sessions included a mix of college students high (n=25) …
Contracts And Trust, Bryan C. Mccannon, Colleen Tokar Assad, Mark Wilson
Contracts And Trust, Bryan C. Mccannon, Colleen Tokar Assad, Mark Wilson
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Social preferences and third-party enforcement of formal contracts are two mechanisms that facilitate performance of an agreement. The standard argument is that formal contracting substitutes when social preferences are lacking. We explore the hypothesis that social preferences and contract enforcement are complements. We measure social preferences from a Trust Game and use it is an explanatory variable in a contract game. We find that both increased contract enforcement and high trusting preferences lead to enhanced rates of contract formation and larger investments. There is an interaction effect where trusting individuals make larger investment agreements, specifically when enforcement is greater. Thus, …
Estimating The Accuracy Of Automated Classification Systems Using Only Expert Ratings That Are Less Accurate Than The System, Paul E. Lehner
Estimating The Accuracy Of Automated Classification Systems Using Only Expert Ratings That Are Less Accurate Than The System, Paul E. Lehner
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A method is presented to estimate the accuracy of an automated classification system based only on expert ratings on test cases, where the system may be substantially more accurate than the raters. In this method an estimate of overall rater accuracy is derived from the level of inter-rater agreement, Bayesian updating based on estimated rater accuracy is applied to estimate a ground truth probability for each classification on each test case, and then overall system accuracy is estimated by comparing the relative frequency that the system agrees with the most probable classification at different probability levels. A simulation analysis provides …
Modeling Probability Of Causal And Random Impacts, Stan Lipovetsky, Igor Mandel
Modeling Probability Of Causal And Random Impacts, Stan Lipovetsky, Igor Mandel
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The method of the estimation of the probability of an event occurring under the influence of the causal and random effects is considered. Epistemological differences from the traditional approaches to causality are discussed, and a new model of the statistical estimation of the parameters of each effect is proposed. The simple and effective algorithms of the model parameters estimation are presented, and numerical simulations are performed. A practical marketing example is analyzed. The results support the validity of the estimation procedure and open the perspective for the application of the method for various decision making problems, where different causes can …

Estimation For The Parameters Of The Exponentiated Exponential Distribution Using A Median Ranked Set Sampling, Monjed H. Samuh, Areen Qtait
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The method of maximum likelihood estimation based on Median Ranked Set Sampling (MRSS) was used to estimate the shape and scale parameters of the Exponentiated Exponential Distribution (EED). They were compared with the conventional estimators. The relative efficiency was used for comparison. The amount of information (in Fisher's sense) available from the MRSS about the parameters of the EED were be evaluated. Confidence intervals for the parameters were constructed using MRSS.

The Considerations Of Editing Previously Published Works, Ariana Marquis
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
How, if at all, do editors adjust their methods when they are editing something that has been previously published (e.g. a short story that previously appeared in a literary journal and will now be published as part of a collection of short stories)? What is their justification for these adjustments (or lack thereof)? How does their understanding of these adjustments (or lack thereof) compare to the products of their efforts?
