The Montana Expression 2015: Bicycling, Norma P. Nickerson, Megan Schultz Jun 2015

The Montana Expression 2015: Bicycling, Norma P. Nickerson, Megan Schultz

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

8,435 residents responded to a survey about their bicycling participation, safety issues and knowledge of laws. Results showed that most residents are not familiar with Montana bicycling laws and do not feel that highways are safe places to bicycle. Forty-six percent of Montana residents 18 and over have bicycled in the past 12 months and of those, only 11 percent bicycled in the winter while 97 percent bicycled in the summer season. Most bicyclists rode within a community on a roadway (62%) followed by 48 percent who rode on a paved path. The smallest number was highway bicycling, where 12 …

Man’S Search For Meaning: The Case Of Legos Revisited, Michael Choi Jun 2015

Man’S Search For Meaning: The Case Of Legos Revisited, Michael Choi

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

How do perceived meaning, levels of resilience, and job-rotation affect productivity and labor supply? Answering this question will provide further insight on how manipulating tasks can influence labor supply, motivation, and productivity in almost any field of labor, such as school and the workplace. Further, this study will explore motivation and the “least-common-denominator of meaningfulness that is shared by virtually all compensated activities” (Ariely et. al., 2008). This study is a replication and extension upon Man’s search for meaning: The case of Legos (Ariely et. al., 2008).

Staying On Script: Sexual Scripts And Sex Education, Elizabeth Carol Hauck Jun 2015

Staying On Script: Sexual Scripts And Sex Education, Elizabeth Carol Hauck

Dissertations and Theses

Existing research suggests that men and women develop differing sexual scripts that influence their behavior, interactions and emotions regarding sex. The objective of this project is to examine the experiences of men and women with formal sex education programs, especially in regards to information about: anatomy and biology, sexual responsibility and risk taking, sexual desire, virginity and abstinence, as well as to explore sources of sex education outside of school. Several studies suggest masculine sexual scripts dictate that men generally construct a more body-focused approach to sex, with an emphasis on competition, aggression and achievement. Conversely, emphasized feminine sexual scripts …

Training And Application Of Correct Information Unit Analysis To Structured And Unstructured Discourse, Audrey Bretthauer Cohen Jun 2015

Training And Application Of Correct Information Unit Analysis To Structured And Unstructured Discourse, Audrey Bretthauer Cohen

Dissertations and Theses

Correct Information Units (CIU) analysis is one of the few measures of discourse that attempts to quantify discourse as a function of communicating information efficiently. Though this analysis is used reliably as a research tool, most studies' apply CIUs to structured discourse tasks and do not specifically describe how raters are trained. If certified clinical speech-language pathologists can likewise reliably apply CIU analysis within clinical settings to unstructured discourse, such as the discourse of people with aphasia (PWA), it may allow clinicians to quantify the information communicated efficiently in clinical populations with discourse deficits. Purpose: The purpose of this study …

Self-Tracking Modes: Reflexive Self-Monitoring And Data Practices, Deborah Lupton Jun 2015

Self-Tracking Modes: Reflexive Self-Monitoring And Data Practices, Deborah Lupton

The Social Life of Big Data Symposium

The concept of ‘self-tracking’ (also referred to as life-logging, the quantified self, personal analytics and personal informatics) has recently begun to emerge in discussions of ways in which people can voluntarily monitor and record specific features of their lives, often using digital technologies. There is evidence that the personal data that are derived from individuals engaging in such reflexive self-monitoring are now beginning to be used by agencies and organisations beyond the personal and privatised realm. Self-tracking rationales and sites are proliferating. The detail offered by these data on individuals and the growing commodification and commercial value of digital data …

Perceived And Actual Similarity As Predictors Of Self-Disclosure And Perceived Understanding At Zero Acquaintance, Rebecca A. Martin Jun 2015

Perceived And Actual Similarity As Predictors Of Self-Disclosure And Perceived Understanding At Zero Acquaintance, Rebecca A. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

When people interact, there are general guidelines that direct the conversation. When two humans interact for the first time, however, there seem to be different factors at play that either allow for the relationship to continue and grow or that end any further interactions. One of the main factors in beginning relationships is the amount self-disclosure that is occurring between the people. Because social relationships are so important for humans, it is important to examine variables that may affect the amount people disclose when they first meet. This study looks at how perceived and actual similarity predict perceived understanding and …

' Cancer Is Like Teenagers': Figurative Comparisons In Surgical Consultations For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Keith Cox Jun 2015

' Cancer Is Like Teenagers': Figurative Comparisons In Surgical Consultations For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Keith Cox

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports findings from a conversation analytic study that investigate how surgeons describe cancer to early-stage breast cancer patients during preoperative consultations. Drawing upon audio recordings of actual consultations, this study examines one surgeon's use of a type of figurative expression, an analogy, to describe what cancer is and how it behaves. My analysis focuses on the role that this analogy plays in the activities that unfold in one phase of the surgical consultation, and reveals some social organizational dimensions of figurative expressions that have gone unexplored in prior research.

Interpersonal Surveillance And User-Led Policing On Social Platforms, Daniel Trottier Jun 2015

Interpersonal Surveillance And User-Led Policing On Social Platforms, Daniel Trottier

The Social Life of Big Data Symposium

Social platforms along with mobile devices allow individuals to share personal details with their peers. They also render individuals visible to institutions like marketers, employers and law enforcement agencies. These lead to troubling developments such as privacy violations, categorical discrimination, and a chilling effect on public speech. Moreover, we (users, but also researchers) are only learning about these in consequence, and are nevertheless coming to terms with online surveillance. Of particular importance is the extent to which individuals contribute to the visibility of peers and strangers alike. This presentation considers research on social media and big data in the context …

Technical Communication As Teaching: A Grounded Theory Study Of Cognitive Empathy And Audience Engagement Among Computer Science Majors In A Technical Communication Classroom, Robert Michael Rowan

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a grounded theory study of empathy, ethical awareness, and audience engagement activities in students in a technical writing service course. The course was designed around an empathy-oriented approach to teaching technical writing and writing research. The students are primarily computer science majors, and the teaching methods include a genre and writing research approach as well as the use of an extended metaphor of technical communication as a form of teaching. Findings indicate that students respond to the metaphor by drawing upon positive and empathetically-informed models of teachers and teaching to guide how they would work with and …

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

There is unanimity of view that Pakistan faces enormous deficiencies in its infrastructure, particularly the energy sector, that is slowing down the rate of growth and creating stress and disenchantment among business and society. It is also true that the federal Public Sector Development Programme does not have enough fiscal space to accommodate all priority projects. At the same time, there is a buoyant private sector that is sitting on ample cash surpluses and looking for profitable opportunities. So there is a demand for infrastructure projects and there is supply of resources available from investors willing and able to finance …

God's Eye News: The Use Of Drones In Journalism, A Documentary Film, Robert Lance Carroll Jun 2015

God's Eye News: The Use Of Drones In Journalism, A Documentary Film, Robert Lance Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses the format of documentary film to investigate the aesthetic, legal, and ethical issues surrounding the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, commonly known as drones, in journalism. Particularly important are the topics of public perception, safety, freedom of speech, and privacy. Do journalists' First Amendment protections extend to the right to gather images using drones? How will the privacy of citizens be protected against aerial cameras that can go virtually unnoticed? Can drones be safely integrated into the National Airspace System? The goal of the documentary is not necessarily to answer these questions, but to gather opinions from …

Understanding The Relationships Of User-Selected Music In Video Games, Memphis Wong Jun 2015

Understanding The Relationships Of User-Selected Music In Video Games, Memphis Wong

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

Music has been an integral part of video games in its contribution to users' gameplay experiences. Varying from simple sound effects to elaborate scores, music helps shape the reactive environment of each video game. In particular, video games that generate unique levels and scenarios based on music has become more popular as its own genre. Games such as Audiosurf take this further, with having the game revolve entirely around levels generated to custom tracks. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of such games, when it allows a user to select his or her own music.
