Starting Off On The Right Foot: A Library New Student Employee Orientation, James Williams Iii

South Carolina Libraries

This article is for administrators, department heads, supervisors and anyone who employs students to assist with the day to day operation of their organization and want to maximize the experience and benefit for both the student and the organization. As service is the heart of the librarianship, it is critical that anyone working in the library start with a good foundation of training, tools and expectations in order to provide high quality service regardless of what area they are employed in. This is particularly important for student employees hired by the library many of which have never held a job …

Using An Obcd Approach And Landsat Tm Data To Detect Harvesting On Nonindustrial Private Property In Upper Michigan, Riccardo Tortini, Audrey L. Mayer, Pieralberto Maianti

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

Forest dynamics influence climate, biodiversity, and livelihoods at multiple scales, yet current resource policy addressing these dynamics is ineffective without reliable land use land cover change data. The collective impact of harvest decisions by many small forest owners can be substantial at the landscape scale, yet monitoring harvests and regrowth in these forests is challenging. Remote sensing is an obvious route to detect and monitor small-scale land use dynamics over large areas. Using an annual series of Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images and a GIS shapefile of property boundaries, we identified units where harvests occurred from 2005 to 2011 using …

Dual Commitment To Organization And Supervisor: A Person-Centered Approach, John P. Meyer, Alexandre J. S. Morin, Christian Vandenberghe

Psychology Publications

A recent trend in commitment research has been to use person-centered analytic strategies to identify homogeneous subgroups with varying configurations of commitment mindsets (affective, normative, continuance) or targets (e.g., organization, supervisor, team). A person-centered approach takes a more holistic perspective than the traditional variable-centered approach and can reflect potentially complex interactions among commitment mindsets and/or targets. We extend application of the person-centered approach to investigate profiles of commitment to two interrelated targets, the organization and supervisor, in two studies (Ns = 481 and 264) involving Belgian university graduates. Using latent profile analyses, we found that a similar 5-profile model fit …

Economic Profile: Village Of Middlefield, Ohio, Kirby Date Jun 2015

Economic Profile: Village Of Middlefield, Ohio, Kirby Date

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

A small town of 2700 residents in rural eastern Geauga County, the Village of Middlefield has nonetheless taken an aggressive approach to attracting business, resulting in sizable local employment that is disproportionate to its small population. As of 2012, 5900 people were employed in the Village and its immediate vicinity, with the potential for an additional 2000 in non-employment and family-based businesses. Businesses have been particularly attracted by the stable, skilled workforce, the small town lifestyle, and the Village’s support for business retention and expansion.

A large proportion of the Village’s employment, in 2012 over 60%, is based in manufacturing, …

Assessment Of Clinical Information: Comparison Of The Validity Of A Structured Clinical Interview (The Scid) And The Clinical Diagnostic Interview, Rebecca Drill, Ora Nakash, Jared A. Defife, Drew Westen Jun 2015

Assessment Of Clinical Information: Comparison Of The Validity Of A Structured Clinical Interview (The Scid) And The Clinical Diagnostic Interview, Rebecca Drill, Ora Nakash, Jared A. Defife, Drew Westen

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Adaptive functioning is a key aspect of psychiatric diagnosis and assessment in research and practice. This study compared adaptive functioning validity ratings from Structured Clinical Interviews (SCIDs, symptom-focused structured diagnostic interviews), and Clinical Diagnostic Interviews (CDIs, systematic diagnostic interviews modeling naturalistic clinical interactions focusing on relational narratives). Two hundred forty-five patients (interviewed by two independent interviewers) and their interviewers completed the Clinical Data Form which assesses adaptive functioning and clinical information. Both interviews converged strongly with patient-reports, with no significant differences in validity of the interviews in measuring global and specific domains of adaptive functioning variables. Findings suggest that CDIs …

The Foundation Of Cistercian Monasteries In France 1098-1789: An Historical Gis Evaluation, Jon Eric Klingenberg Rasmussen Jun 2015

The Foundation Of Cistercian Monasteries In France 1098-1789: An Historical Gis Evaluation, Jon Eric Klingenberg Rasmussen

Masters Theses

Historical geography focuses upon those relationships which have shaped the evolution of place and landscape over time. One fundamental approach used to achieve this objective is the set of theories associated with spatial diffusion. This includes the spatial and chronological paths, the periodicities and rates of spread, as well as the identification of areas of void or avoidance. An emerging trend in historical geography is the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A GIS provides the researcher with the necessary tools to re-evaluate and challenge long-standing interpretations of any given event, historical or otherwise, as well as develop new insights …

Collecting Cats: Library Lessons From Neko Atsume, Kelly M. Blanchat, Megan Brooks Jun 2015

Collecting Cats: Library Lessons From Neko Atsume, Kelly M. Blanchat, Megan Brooks

Publications and Research

This blog post is the culmination of a Twitter conversation between librarians talking about their experiences playing a phone game. The game is called Nekoatsume and it involves taking care of digital cats in a virtual backyard. Nekoatsume is entirely in Japanese, a key fact that actually started the Twitter conversation (and not the fact that the game involves cats, as might be expected). Despite the language barrier, Nekoatsume is remarkably user-friendly; library databases should be just as user-friendly as a game in a foreign language, but too often they’re not. With so many variables in acquiring research — design, …

Inference Under Stability Of Risk Preferences, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum Jun 2015

Inference Under Stability Of Risk Preferences, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

We leverage the assumption that preferences are stable across contexts to partially identify and conduct inference on the parameters of a structural model of risky choice. Working with data on households' deductible choices across three lines of insurance coverage and a model that nests expected utility theory plus a range of non-expected utility models, we perform a revealed preference analysis that yields household-specific bounds on the model parameters. We then impose stability and other structural assumptions to tighten the bounds, and we explore what we can learn about households' risk preferences from the intervals defined by the bounds. We further …

Borderlands: My Path To Becoming A Sex Therapist, G. Corey Carlisle Jun 2015

Borderlands: My Path To Becoming A Sex Therapist, G. Corey Carlisle

The Qualitative Report

Current studies focus on the practice of therapy more than the person of the therapist, which remains true in the practice of sex therapy. This study seeks to provide insight into the person-of-the-therapist by exploring the researcher’s personal journey to becoming a sex therapist. Using an autoethnography qualitative research approach, the researcher analyzed his inner experiences. The researcher demonstrated his life in the borderlands, how Eros reconciles his double-consciousness, and how this has led him to his work as a sex therapist. This study encourages readers to reflect and give voice to their own developmental experiences, adding to the collective …

Parental Involvement, Students' Self-Engagement, And Academic Achievement: A Structural Equation Model, Cuirong Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the ever-evolving landscape of China's education system, the gap between the rural and urban was always an important issue, not only the multifaceted interplay of parental involvement, student self-engagement, and academic performance. This study utilized a comprehensive national survey dataset through a thorough understanding of cultural nuances and educational intricacies specific to the Chinese context. Its aim was not only to decipher the underlying constructs of parental involvement and student self-engagement but also to investigate how these factors impacted academic achievement among students. The research unfolded in several stages using a representative sample of 10750 students from 112 schools …

Resisting Technical Rationality In Mental Health Nurse Higher Education: A Duoethnography, Alec J. Grant, Mark A. C. Radcliffe

The Qualitative Report

This duoethnographic study has three aims: the first is to coherently situate our emerging duoethnographic dialogue in relation to an overview of both its parent methodology and related approaches within the narrative inquiry paradigm. Our second aim is to then enable readers to make contextual sense of our dialogue. We do so by prefacing it with a brief, focused overview of our theoretical, empirical and fiction work, and related literature, selected for the purpose of clarification. Following this, our final aim is to demonstrate in our dialogue the differences between our respective attempts as academics to work against the neoliberal …

Working Paper No. 07, Evsey Domar And The Keynesian Tradition, Cesar Maldonado Jun 2015

Working Paper No. 07, Evsey Domar And The Keynesian Tradition, Cesar Maldonado

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Evsey Domar extends Keynes’s thinking and in this manner helps to establish a post-Keynesian tradition. First, I shall consider Keynes’s ideas concerning problems facing market capitalism as appears in his book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money. Then I shall continue with this inquiry and consider Domar’s insights into expansion and employment and his concerns regarding capital accumulation, as well as his confronting a theory posited by Keynes concerning investment and employment, raising the issue of whether Keynes’s understanding is accurate. The last part of this inquiry deals with Domar’s concerns …

Furthermore, international collaboration in the articles is minimum and almost all of it revolves around Spain.

Rules And Rocks: The Us-China Standoff Over The South China Sea Islands, Mel Gurtov Jun 2015

Rules And Rocks: The Us-China Standoff Over The South China Sea Islands, Mel Gurtov

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article discusses ongoing territorial tensions in the South China Sea.

"The long-running, multi-party dispute over control of islets in the South China Sea (SCS) is worsening both in rhetoric and provocative activity. Meeting in late May at the Shangri-La Dialogue on regional security, US and Chinese defense officials sparred over responsibility for the increased tension, though they stopped short of issuing threats. In fact, all sides to the dispute say they want to avoid violence, prefer a diplomatic resolution, and support freedom of navigation. Both the US and China insist that the dispute notwithstanding, their relationship overall is positive …
