How To, And How Not To Recover And Preserve Two Orphan Journals: A Case Study Of The Journal Of Communication Therapy And Insight And Hindsight, Paul Blobaum

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

The OPUS repository at Governors State University, University Park IL was launched in May, 2014. The Repository replaces Dspace. Materials in the University Archives were reviewed for possible candidates for digitization and utilization of the Digital Commons Journal series structures for optimal showcasing of archived content of these defunct journals that originated at the University. Copies of the Journal of Communication Therapy, and Insight and Hindsight, journal were discovered in the University Archives, and identified for recovery of the publication's opus (filling in missing issues), digitization, and archival preservation. A collaborative effort with Texas State University library was implemented to …

Academic Publishing Folklore: Finding A Unified Narrative For Open Access, Dave Johnston

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

There is often no systematic means by which information about open access and the scholarly publishing landscape is shared between faculty, students and administrators and the particular concerns can vary considerably from discipline to discipline. The patchwork of beliefs about open access and publishing on our campuses bears more similarity to a body of folklore, an academic publishing folklore. Like all folklore, it can contain elements of both misinformation and truth.

Working as a librarian in a scholarly communications role brings with it the responsibility of conveying the importance of open access to faculty members, students and administrators in order …

Scholarly Communication Outreach: Oers, Etds, And Liaisons, Todd Bruns, Steve Brantley, Stacey Knight-Davis

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

At Eastern Illinois University (EIU) several library faculty have been involved with a coordinated outreach effort to provide scholarly communication support services to EIU's faculty. This presentation will highlight many of those efforts, including producing the results of the recent Bepress survey trial of faculty digital research needs, using the IR as a platform for hosting Open Educational Resources, marketing the IR and library services to faculty via "Success + Service" reports, training library subject liaisons to be "scholarly communication coaches," and outreach efforts to specific campus entities such as EIU's Research and Sponsored Programs Office, the Center for Humanities, …

An Integrated Digital Services Model For Institutional Repositories, M Ryan Hess Jul 2015

An Integrated Digital Services Model For Institutional Repositories, M Ryan Hess

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

DePaul University Library created a suite of digital services to support faculty projects which addressed common hurdles to repository adoption. In a faculty survey we ran in the fall of 2014, faculty reported an unawareness of the repository, uncertainty of how they might use it. However, they also reported that they placed value on the repository services we presented to them and a desire to hear more information. Anecdotally, we also heard the common refrain that faculty are too busy and too technologically challenged to engage with the repository on their own. In response, we defined several interrelated services to …

Gustavo GutiéRrez – Liberation Theology & Marxism, Todd Cameron Swathwood Jr Jul 2015

Gustavo GutiéRrez – Liberation Theology & Marxism, Todd Cameron Swathwood Jr

The Kabod

Since 1968, liberation theology has emerged as a prominent feature of religion and politics, particularly in South America. Originally stemming from the writings of Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez, this at-once theological and overtly political ideology decries the institutionalized violence of the world’s capitalist society on the poor and oppressed, and argues that God is particularly concerned with the plight of the suffering masses. Christians should therefore make assistance of these poor souls their highest priority, and advocate for any and all methods of alleviating suffering, especially those that work from the premise that society must be toppled and rebuilt for …

Emerging Cultural Conflicts In Italy: A Challenge For Criminal Law, Raffaele Muzzica, Tracy Tamborra, Giuseppe Amarelli

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Because of recent and rapid increases in immigration rates, Italy has been confronted with new forms of cultural conflicts. Cultural conflicts have resulted in cultural offenses; these are acts committed and promoted by people belonging to a minority culture that are considered to be offenses by the majority controlled legal system. In addition to defining cultural offenses and presenting defenses that are presented when cultural offenses are tried, this paper highlights pros, cons and potential pitfalls of considering culture under Italian law. Finally, suggestions to improve legal considerations of cultural diversity in Italy are presented; specifically the creation of laws …

Separation From And Reconstruction Of Home: A Study Of Immigrant Expressive Therapists, Dana Albert-Proos Jul 2015

Separation From And Reconstruction Of Home: A Study Of Immigrant Expressive Therapists, Dana Albert-Proos

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This study examined the subject of home—specifically separating from and reconstructing home—to better understand the concept of home and its role in the immigration experience and the effectiveness of expressive arts therapy as a treatment method for immigrants. The literature supported that leaving one’s home and recreating another are major parts of the immigration experience. Previous studies found that these experiences can raise fundamental questions about where and what home is (e.g., Despres, 1991; Mallet, 2004; Malone & Dooley, 2006; Philip & Ho, 2010; Wiles, 2008). This study used qualitative methods to explore the research question: How do immigrant expressive …

Do The Police Believe That Legitimacy Promotes Cooperation From The Public?, Justin Nix Jul 2015

Do The Police Believe That Legitimacy Promotes Cooperation From The Public?, Justin Nix

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Tyler’s process-based model of regulation suggests that when citizens perceive the police as a legitimate authority, they are more likely to cooperate in the form of reporting crimes and providing information to the police. Yet most studies have considered citizens’ perceptions of police legitimacy—few studies have asked the police what they feel makes them legitimate in the eyes of the public. Likewise, no studies have considered whether the police believe legitimacy is associated with cooperation from the public. The present study addresses this gap using data from a stratified sample of U.S. police executives. Findings suggest police believe performance, rather …

Ship It To Me!: Evaluating Interlibrary Loan Services For Distance Students, Kourtney P. Blackburn, Alicia Marrese Jul 2015

Ship It To Me!: Evaluating Interlibrary Loan Services For Distance Students, Kourtney P. Blackburn, Alicia Marrese

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Starting in Fall 2013, St. John Fisher College's Lavery Library began providing Interlibrary Loan services to doctoral students at its two recently established satellite campuses, the College of New Rochelle (CNR) and Onondaga Community College (OCC). Although students from both campuses received loans at their homes through UPS delivery, the campus' locations originally resulted in two different return procedures: patrons affiliated with CNR returned items through UPS, while an OCC staff member collected return items and drove them back to our library. Although this model worked well at the beginning, an increase in requests and differences in procedure resulted in …

Does The Nebraska Livestock Friendly County Program Affect Livestock Expansion In The State?, Brian E. Mills Jul 2015

Does The Nebraska Livestock Friendly County Program Affect Livestock Expansion In The State?, Brian E. Mills

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Livestock production in Nebraska is a very essential part of the state’s economy with cash receipts from all livestock and products valued at $11.9 billion in 2013 (NDA 2015b). The Livestock Friendly County Program (LFCP) was instituted by the Nebraska Legislature in 2003 to further promote livestock development in the state. This thesis examines whether the program has had its intended impact for both cattle and hog farms. The analysis draws on the theory of long-run competitive equilibrium as a guide for the specification of the cattle and hog models. Three alternative specifications of the models using different sets of …

Final Report For 2015 Er&L + Ebsco Library Fellowship Research Project, Tao Zhang, Xi Niu Jul 2015

Final Report For 2015 Er&L + Ebsco Library Fellowship Research Project, Tao Zhang, Xi Niu

Libraries Reports

We report findings from a comprehensive assessment of e-book user experience (search and information seeking) from transaction logs, e-book usage data, and user tests. There are differences between e-book and general searches in terms of query length, number of queries and actions per session. There are also distinctive reading patterns from e-book usage data. The user tests showed that experience levels with e-books and features of e-book platforms influenced users’ information seeking behavior. Results of the assessment have significant implications for the design of e-book features to support users’ reading strategies and help libraries create a consistent e-book user experience.

Incorporating Spirituality And Market: Islamic Sharia Business And Religious Life In Post-New Order Indonesia, Wildan Sena Utama

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article examines the religious transformation of the Muslim middle class and its relationship with the growing sharia market in post-New Order Indonesia. It argues that in the Indonesian neo-liberal era, this spiritual revival considerably influenced the economic realm. The transformation of piety of the Indonesian middle class marked the emergence of new potential economic markets. It was responded to enthusiastically by markets producing selective products with a spiritual content. In its process, the role of spiritual lifestyle agents played a pivotal role in helping and shaping the new urban middle class who consume Islam to mark their Islamic identity. …

Membangun Bencana: Tinjauan Kritis Atas Peran Negara Dalam Kasus Lapindo, Anton Novenanto Jul 2015

Membangun Bencana: Tinjauan Kritis Atas Peran Negara Dalam Kasus Lapindo, Anton Novenanto

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article begins with the emergence and shared assumptions of the absence of the state in Lapindo case. This article aims to problematize ‘the truth’ of such assumptions. Adopting Oliver-Smith’s definition of “disasters of development,” this article argues that disaster is not just an event but also a process which can be elaborated through an examination of encompassing political agendas. Therefore, it can trigger the awareness of preventive actions prior to a disaster. The argument of the article are based on a series of critical re-reading of public documents related to the case. The result of such reading shows that …

Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet Jul 2015

Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

There are only two different occurances in modernity: solid modernity and liquid modernity. Solid Modernity operates to create logic of order, categorization and administration. Liquid Modernity works as an illusion of speed and perpetual changes. Mode of categorization in solid modernity has sparked the logic of partiality and nonpartialitity in society. Holocaust -according to Bauman- is an impact of the incapability of the modernity to define ambivalence subject in the mode of categorization. Jews is historical subject that is ambivalence in the eye of regime of categorization. Based on this historical trauma, Bauman propose a new horison in Sociology: Sociology …

Using a qualitative method and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity and moral agency as framework analysis, this study shows how the construction of moral identity process begins with the actor disquite over the state of traditional culture in globalization era. The author argues that the expression of the identity of actor through this social movement will create the role of cultural diversity in the era of cultural globalization and liquid modernity. The author wants to move away from an …

How Do Depression Medications Taken By Pilots Affect Passengers' Willingness To Fly? A Mediation Analysis, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, Keegan Kraemer, Rian Mehta, Korhan Oyman

Publications

The mental health of airline pilots has been a concern for decades. In 2010, the United States Federal Aviation Administration began allowing four types of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to be used by pilots suffering from depression. After a procedural wait period, pilots may be awarded a special issuance of their medical certificates to maintain flight currency. Missing from the literature was any research on consumer’s perceptions of pilots taking antidepressants, along with some other approved medications. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine consumer’s willingness to fly once told that the pilot of their hypothetical …

Adam Smith: Homo Socialis, Yes; Social Preferences, No; Reciprocity Was To Be Explained, Vernon L. Smith Jul 2015

Adam Smith: Homo Socialis, Yes; Social Preferences, No; Reciprocity Was To Be Explained, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

I argue that the authors accept too casually the neo-classical framework of thought that was incapable of predicting choices in 2-person and other experimental games in the 1980s and 1990ss. The ex post hoc hypothesis that social preference can describe homo socialis reduces inevitably to a rescue of neo-classical economics in which Max-U (own payoff, other payoff) substitutes mechanically for Max-U (own payoff) in our personal groupings. This static procedure unnecessarily and inappropriately robs human conduct of its sociality as a process relationship. The model I articulate was masterfully developed by Adam Smith, which back-predicts the results of these earlier …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Daycare Teacher Stress And Locus Of Control, Veronica Schumann

Theses and Dissertations

This study's purpose was to examine stress and locus of control in daycare teachers. A literature review was conducted to explore the various aspects of daycare services in America. The factors of locus of control and stress were signified and investigated as separate entities. The interaction between the two factors was also explored. In order to explore these two factors, a survey was administered to 19 daycare teachers from two different facilities. The presentation of both internal and external locus of control was expressed in approximately 70 percent of the teachers who were surveyed. A mild level of stress was …

From Rescue To Representation: A Human Rights Approach To The Contemporary Anti-Slavery Movement, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick Jul 2015

From Rescue To Representation: A Human Rights Approach To The Contemporary Anti-Slavery Movement, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick

School of Peace Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Current efforts to end contemporary slavery represent a fourth wave of an Anglo-American abolitionist movement. Despite this historic precedent, there is little agreement on the nature of the problem. A review of current academic discourse, movement frames, and policy approaches suggests that six perspectives predominate: a prostitution approach focused on sexual exploitation of “women and girls”; a migration approach focused on the cross-border flow of migrants; a criminal justice approach focused on law and enforcement; a forced-labor approach emphasizing unfree labor; a slavery approach focused on trafficking in comparative-historical context; and a human rights approach centered on individual rights. This …
