Late Taino Occupation Of Jamaica: A Zooarchaeological Analysis Of Faunal Materials From The Bluefields Bay Site, Diana M. Azevedo Aug 2015

Late Taino Occupation Of Jamaica: A Zooarchaeological Analysis Of Faunal Materials From The Bluefields Bay Site, Diana M. Azevedo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

My thesis seeks to answer the broad questions: can early foragers alter marine resources in island settings and can archaeological data provide insights into these changes. These questions highlight two important issues. The first issue reflects the common belief that small-scale societies did not affect their environments. The second issue centers on growing concern over the collapse of fisheries across the globe.

To answer these questions, I use fish bones recovered from an archaeological site located in Belmont, Jamaica near the Bluefields Bay marine sanctuary. The Bluefields Bay site dates to the late Taíno occupation of Jamaica. The name Taíno …

Influencing Acceptability Of Parent Training Interventions Through Treatment Rationales, Trisha Chase Aug 2015

Influencing Acceptability Of Parent Training Interventions Through Treatment Rationales, Trisha Chase

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parent training is an effective intervention for parents of children with a variety of childhood disorders, and parents often view behavioral parent training as acceptable. Explanations and rationales for parent training are commonly provided at the beginning of treatment. However, there is little research regarding how rationales may influence acceptability. There is also limited information on whether fathers and mothers judge the acceptability of parent training differently. The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing the description of a behavioral parenting intervention influenced parents’ acceptability ratings and whether mothers and fathers differed in their ratings.

Participants viewed one …

Lifestyle Intervention In Emerging Adulthood: A Brief Acceptance-Based Behavioral Intervention With Young Adults, Spencer M. Richards

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Across the U.S., obesity and overweight represent a rapidly growing public health concern that have been associated with expensive and debilitating outcomes such as depression, cancers, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and significant disruption in quality of life, in addition to the tremendous public health costs. The current study examined a brief, randomized-controlled trial of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with overweight and obese young adults.

Study participants were randomly assigned to a 4-week experimental ACT group or an information control group, which received psychoeducational materials regarding lifestyle behaviors recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention …

Organizational Adaptation In Local Stormwater Governance, Andrea Armstrong Aug 2015

Organizational Adaptation In Local Stormwater Governance, Andrea Armstrong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Much of the past research and policy analysis on issues of western water has focused on inter-basin river agreements, large infrastructure that captures and distributes water, and conflict between agricultural and urban water demands. My dissertation asks a set of different questions:

How is water governed and managed within communities of Utah?

How are the organizations that manage water responding to changes in population, water availability, and water quality policy?

The answers to these questions are essential for understanding the ways in which changes to water quantity and quality will be addressed in the present and coming years. To better …

Three Essays In Trade And International Development, Nii Amon Neequaye Aug 2015

Three Essays In Trade And International Development, Nii Amon Neequaye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation studies how society views corruption at different stages of economic development. It develops a theoretical framework that shows that at low levels of income or development, corruption increases and at high levels of income and development, corruption decreases. This theoretical proposition is also investigated empirically. The empirical analyses support the proposed theory and hint that fiscal policy, socioeconomic conditions, and incidences of war play significant roles in determining a country’s corruption level.

In addition, this dissertation also explores the relationship between merchandise and service trade. I show theoretically that the two are related and determined simultaneously. An empirical …

Results find three different groups of sources of communicative support were used in different ways to help manage military occupational stress: sources within the military, sources outside of the military, and religious …

Effects Of Divorce Risk On Women's Labor Supply And Human Capital Investment, Kristin Mammen Aug 2015

Effects Of Divorce Risk On Women's Labor Supply And Human Capital Investment, Kristin Mammen

Publications and Research

This paper examines the effects of the divorce law liberalization of the early 1970s on the increase in divorce rates during the same time period. A review of the evidence suggests that the law changes were not a major driver of the divorce rates; but the policy changes appear to have affected behavior even for those who did not divorce. The results here suggest that as they saw the laws changing, young women in the divorce reform states redirected some of their investments from marriage to their own human capital. The perceived increase in the probability of divorce motivated women …

Evaluating Scholarly Communication Services And Programs To Plan For Sustained Success, Jacklyn Rander, Matt Ruen

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

The scholarly communications program and institutional repository at Grand Valley State University began in 2008, and in its first seven years, grew rapidly. Our team, recently-expanded, now includes three full time positions, and through our repository we host open textbooks, open-access journals, and thousands of documents. Our initial growth was organic and opportunistic, which enabled this initiative to successfully take root in the University Libraries. The next challenge for our scholarly communications program is to make sure those early roots are strong and healthy, so that we can sustain our initial success through the next seven years and beyond.

Beyond Assessment: Using Metrics To Make Institutional Repositories Indispensable, Harrison W. Inefuku, Todd A. Bruns

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

The collection, analysis, and reporting of metrics is a valuable tool for repository managers in measuring and assessing the growth and usage of their institutional repositories. These metrics are varied in nature and purpose, and can include download counts to measure readership of repository materials, numbers of uploaded items to measure repository growth, sources of inbound visitors to determine the success of search engine optimization, and names and numbers of contributing authors to measure faculty uptake.

The stakeholders in an institutional repository extend beyond the library to include university administration, academic departments, research centers, professors, staff, students, and alumni. These …

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

At Kent State, we work on Digital Commons all times of day so communication is important. We utilize many of bepress’s built-in features to facilitate this. Based on our conversations with other Digital Commons institutional repository managers, many of Digital Commons’ built-in features are not used or not used to their fullest potential. We are moving toward taking full advantage of built-in features in our workflow and hope to push beyond what is available and to suggest enhancements from bepress. We aim to use built-in features for training, internal communication within our team, external communication with authors and rights holders, …

"Make It Work": Patching Together A New Ir Workflow To Sustain Growth, Teresa Schultz Jul 2015

"Make It Work": Patching Together A New Ir Workflow To Sustain Growth, Teresa Schultz

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group

Growing an institutional repository at a small university library with limited resources brings a number of challenges, and VU is no different. The Christopher Center Library has no dedicated employees who work solely with its IR, ValpoScholar, and instead relies on a mix of interns and other employees to create records and upload works in their spare time. VU has had some success in finding faculty works for ValpoScholar through self-submissions for an annual celebration of faculty research and by searching databases but wanted to see if there was still a better way. In Fall 2014, the library began to …

Economic Freedom And Economic Growth Across U.S. States: A Spatial Panel Data Analysis, Joshua C. Hall, Donald J. Lacombe, Timothy M. Shaughnessy Jul 2015

Economic Freedom And Economic Growth Across U.S. States: A Spatial Panel Data Analysis, Joshua C. Hall, Donald J. Lacombe, Timothy M. Shaughnessy

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

There is a substantial literature estimating the effect of economic freedom on economic growth. Most studies examine the relationship between freedom and growth for countries, while a few examine the relationship for U.S. states. Absent in the state{level literature is consideration of the presence of spatial spillovers affecting the freedom{growth relationship. Neglecting to account for spatial autocorrelation can bias estimation results and therefore inferences drawn. We find evidence of a spatial pattern in real per-capita GSP that affects non-spatial estimates of the freedom{growth relationship. Taking into account the direct and indirect effects of economic freedom on GSP, we find a …

Brady And Goodell, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The success of the NFL derives in part from its mastery of the electronic media as the league is able to blanket that world at all times and places. There is no off-season for the NFL. On the rare occasion, there can be drawbacks to this dominance. The last seventy-two hours is not what the media mavens at the NFL would call “a good run.”

Differences In Pornography Use Among Couples: Associations With Satisfaction, Stability, And Relationship Processes, Brian J. Willoughby, Jason S. Carroll, Dean M. Busby, Cameron C. Brown

Faculty Publications

The present study utilized a sample of 1755 adult couples in heterosexual romantic relationships to examine how different patterns of pornography use between romantic partners may be associated with relationship outcomes. While pornography use has been generally associated with some negative and some positive couple outcomes, no study has yet explored how differences between partners may uniquely be associated with relationship well-being. Results suggested that greater discrepancies between partners in pornography use were related to less relationship satisfaction, less stability, less positive communication, and more relational aggression. Mediation analyses suggested that greater pornography use discrepancies were primarily associated with elevated …

Do New Sports Facilities Attract New Businesses?, Kaitlyn Harger, Brad R. Humphreys, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We examine the impact of new sports facilities on new businesses, an unexplored topic in the literature. We use data from the Dunn and Bradstreet MarketPlace files to examine how new sports facilities affect nearby business activity in terms of the number of new businesses and workers. We find no evidence of increased new businesses openings after the opening of new sports facilities in 13 US cities in the 2000s; employment at new businesses near new facilities is larger than at new businesses elsewhere in the MSA; this increase cannot be linked to businesses in any specific industry.

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

A study of 56 professors at five American universities found that a majority had little understanding of principles, well-known in the field of data curation, informing the ongoing administration of digital materials and chose to manage and store work-related data by relying on the use of their own storage devices and cloud accounts. It also found that a majority of them had experienced the loss of at least one work-related digital object that they considered to be important in the course of their professional career. Despite such a rate of loss, a majority of respondents expressed at least a moderate …

Agave Chewing And Dental Wear: Evidence From Quids, Emily E. Hammerl, Melissa A. Baier, Karl Reinhard Jul 2015

Agave Chewing And Dental Wear: Evidence From Quids, Emily E. Hammerl, Melissa A. Baier, Karl Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

Agave quid chewing is examined as a potential contributing behavior to hunter-gatherer dental wear. It has previously been hypothesized that the contribution of Agave quid chewing to dental wear would be observed in communities wherever phytolith-rich desert succulents were part of subsistence. Previous analysis of coprolites from a prehistoric agricultural site, La Cueva de los Muertos Chiquitos in Durango, Mexico, showed that Agave was a consistent part of a diverse diet. Therefore, quids recovered at this site ought to be useful materials to test the hypothesis that dental wear was related to desert succulent consumption. The quids recovered from the …

Research Brief: "Military Veterans Marching Towards Entrepreneurship: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study investigates whether a community entrepreneurial education program fuels entrepreneurial passion and increases consultations for veterans. In practice, transitioning service members should consider participating in entrepreneurship training courses with mentors and consult their informal networks. In policy, the VA and policymakers might partner to create more opportunities for veterans and civilians. Suggestions for future research include having a broader sample size, as well as measuring the structured entrepreneurship training courses' effectiveness.
