This article examines case studies and learning outcomes in a high school digital production classroom taught by a veteran media literacy educator.

Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt Aug 2015

Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Crowded curriculums and restrictive program requirements often mean that comprehensive media literacy education is impractical at the university level, and that media literacy competencies can be addressed only in the form of narrowly focused lessons integrated into existing classes. This study considers the extent to which such limited lessons can lead to the development of broader, well-rounded media literacy competencies. Data gathered from a quasi-experiment involving 118 participants suggests that narrowly focused media lessons can be used to encourage the development of broader media literacy competencies, but that focused instruction remains necessary as well.

A Theory-Grounded Measure Of Adolescents' Response To Media Literacy Interventions, Kathryn Greene, Itzhak Yanovitzky, Amanda Carpenter, Smita C. Banerjee, Kate Magsamen-Conrad, Michael L. Hecht, Elvira Elek Aug 2015

A Theory-Grounded Measure Of Adolescents' Response To Media Literacy Interventions, Kathryn Greene, Itzhak Yanovitzky, Amanda Carpenter, Smita C. Banerjee, Kate Magsamen-Conrad, Michael L. Hecht, Elvira Elek

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Media literacy interventions offer relatively new and promising avenues for the prevention of risky health behaviors among children and adolescents, but current literature remains largely equivocal about their efficacy. We propose that (a) much of this ambiguity stems from the lack of conceptual clarity in the literature regarding the cognitive process through which media literacy interventions influence their target audience, and (b) that the ability to track this cognitive process by means of valid and reliable measures is necessary to evaluating the effects of media literacy programs on their audience. Accordingly, the primary objective of this study was to develop …

Critical Media Literacy And Gender: Teaching Middle School Students About Gender Stereotypes And Occupations, Laurel Puchner, Linda Markowitz, Mark Hedley Aug 2015

Critical Media Literacy And Gender: Teaching Middle School Students About Gender Stereotypes And Occupations, Laurel Puchner, Linda Markowitz, Mark Hedley

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study examined the effectiveness of the implementation of a small-scale critical media literacy curriculum unit focused on gender stereotypes, especially as they pertain to occupations. The research question was whether students exposed to the critical media literacy (CML) curriculum were more likely than students not exposed to believe: that women experience discrimination in the workplace; that the media constructs stereotypical messages about women and men, especially regarding occupations; and that the media influences people’s thinking. Participants were students in 5 seventh grade classes, who were exposed to a 4-workshop curriculum, and students in 5 eighth grades classes, who were …

Soviet Cineclubs: Baranov’S Film/Media Education Model, Alexander Fedorov, Elizaveta Friesem Aug 2015

Soviet Cineclubs: Baranov’S Film/Media Education Model, Alexander Fedorov, Elizaveta Friesem

Journal of Media Literacy Education

In this paper we discuss a historical form of media literacy education that is still insufficiently explored in English-language literature: Soviet cineclubs. We focus on one particular cineclub that was created by a Soviet educator Oleg Baranov in the 1950s. We admit that Baranov’s teaching practices might have been rooted in and shaped by ideological requirements of the time. However, we believe that the structure of his model can be used as an inspiration for a media literacy club in today’s schools.

Investigating How Mtv’S 16 & Pregnant May Be Used As Media Literacy Education With High-Risk Adolescents, Tracy Marie Scull, Rebecca Ortiz, Autumn Shafer, Jane Brown, Janis B. Kupersmidt, Katherine Suellentrop Aug 2015

Investigating How Mtv’S 16 & Pregnant May Be Used As Media Literacy Education With High-Risk Adolescents, Tracy Marie Scull, Rebecca Ortiz, Autumn Shafer, Jane Brown, Janis B. Kupersmidt, Katherine Suellentrop

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Reality television shows featuring teen pregnancy may be used as media literacy education tools to positively affect youth sexual health outcomes. Concerns, however, exist that such programming may glamorize teen pregnancy. The present study examined how viewing and discussing episodes of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, a reality television series about teen pregnancy, may impact adolescents at high risk for teen pregnancy (N =162; M=13.5 years). Adolescents indicated that they enjoyed viewing and discussing the episodes and saw the program as realistic but did not perceive the lives of the characters as desirable. Many also reported that they …

The Immigrant Health Advantage In Canada: Lessened By Six Health Determinants, Sasha Koba Aug 2015

The Immigrant Health Advantage In Canada: Lessened By Six Health Determinants, Sasha Koba

MA Research Paper

The existence of a healthy immigrant effect in which immigrants initially have a health advantage over the native-born is well established. As immigrants spend time in their host country, they adopt health behaviours and subsequently lose their health advantage. However, the causes of the decline in immigrants’ health as their time in Canada increases are not known. I examine the effect of six health determinants on immigrants’ deteriorating health in Canada. I also explore if there are gender differences in the deterioration of immigrants’ health. Additionally, I consider the possible association between immigrants’ length of time in Canada, their age …

Parents’ Views Of Video Games: Habitus Forms In The Context Of Parental Mediation, Henrike Friedrichs, Friederike Von Gross, Katharina Herde, Uwe Sander Aug 2015

Parents’ Views Of Video Games: Habitus Forms In The Context Of Parental Mediation, Henrike Friedrichs, Friederike Von Gross, Katharina Herde, Uwe Sander

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This paper is based on a research project conducted in 2014 on parental attitudes to, and their mediation of, video games. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 28 parents (14 couples) explored their media-related habitus, their media-educational habitus and the interaction between the habitus. The results show, inter alia, that the media-related habitus has a significant influence on the media-educational habitus.

Seasonal Agricultural Workers In Canada: Understanding The Socio-Political Issues, W. Zachary Marshall Aug 2015

Seasonal Agricultural Workers In Canada: Understanding The Socio-Political Issues, W. Zachary Marshall

MA Research Paper

This paper explores the current Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) in Canada. This paper uses content analysis to examine past research, current policies and key examples to examine the program and understand key flaws in the way it is currently administered. This paper finds that migrant workers currently face issues in 4 key areas: working conditions, living conditions, access to health care and isolation (lack of community). Exploring these issues this paper identifies some of the key problems with the SAWP and explores how the Canadian approach does not always match with the current best practices.

Neighbourhood Context And Youth Mental Health: The Role Of Local Community Programming In A Mid-Sized Ontario Urban Centre, Monica Christine Bochus Aug 2015

Neighbourhood Context And Youth Mental Health: The Role Of Local Community Programming In A Mid-Sized Ontario Urban Centre, Monica Christine Bochus

MA Research Paper

Existing research indicates that neighbourhood disadvantage takes a cumulative toll on mental health across the life course beginning in childhood. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the role of local community resources on buffering the harmful effects of adversity for youth in a mid-sized Ontario urban centre. The following questions were addressed: 1) What role do youth-centered community resources play in child and adolescent mental health promotion and awareness, particularly for at-risk children? 2) How can they serve to improve child and adolescent well-being? By interviewing key informants, the study found that affordable youth-centred programming has the potential …

Living In A Transnational World: Identity Negotiation And Formation Among Second-Generation Lebanese Young Adults Living In London Ontario, Wajeha Chams Aug 2015

Living In A Transnational World: Identity Negotiation And Formation Among Second-Generation Lebanese Young Adults Living In London Ontario, Wajeha Chams

MA Research Paper

According to the 2011 Canadian Census, immigrants make up 20.6% of the total Canadian population (Statistics Canada, 2014), and a growing body of research is raising questions about immigrants’ experiences, their identities and how transnational lives have shaped and influenced Canadian society and citizenship. Recent research on transnationalism enhances understanding of immigrants’ relationships within both their source and host countries. This research demonstrates that first-generation immigrants tend to maintain their ethnic identities, language and cultural traditions through the active maintenance of transnational ties and activities. However, the lives of their children are less directly tied to the parents’ homeland. As …

Gender, Generation, And Jobs: Differences In Gender Role Ideologies By Age And Occupation, Christina Treleaven Aug 2015

Gender, Generation, And Jobs: Differences In Gender Role Ideologies By Age And Occupation, Christina Treleaven

MA Research Paper

Gender inequality in the workplace remains a salient issue today; women continue to earn less than men, driven in part by occupational segregation and by general perceptions about socially constructed gender norms. Using the United States General Social Survey, I conduct multivariate Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis to explore the differences in gender role ideologies by generational cohort and occupation. The results highlight differences in gender role ideologies amongst occupations and suggest that while perceptions of gender influence occupational choices, so too do occupations impact our perceptions of gender roles. Individuals working in occupations atypical for their gender, those who …

What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller Aug 2015

What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller

Pepperdine University Libraries

Recently, Pepperdine University Libraries initiated the digitization and curatorial arrangement of a large collection of negatives and prints donated by the widow of Hanson A. Williams, Jr., one of our alumni. Williams had been a photographer by trade and, after his death, his wife donated 13.86 linear feet of photographic images depicting his life at college and immediately afterwards in the Korean War. After processing the collection, we realized that we had a copious number of Williams’ original negatives in addition to multiple iterations (in some cases) of prints that he had made from these negatives. As we discussed a …

The Fire This Time: Ta-Nehisi Coates’S “Between The World And Me”, Bill Yousman Aug 2015

The Fire This Time: Ta-Nehisi Coates’S “Between The World And Me”, Bill Yousman

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

In 1963, James Baldwin published his seminal The Fire Next Time. The first half of this foundational work was a letter to his nephew regarding America and race. In 2015 the journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates published a letter to his son, also about America and race. The literary device employed is no coincidence. Toni Morrison has anointed Coates as the successor to James Baldwin, and while that is a heavy burden for any 40 year old to bear, it is one that he just might manage to handle with grace.

Cultural Conceptualizations Of The Trauma Response: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Religiosity, And Religious Coping, Yu-Feng Emily Hu Aug 2015

Cultural Conceptualizations Of The Trauma Response: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Religiosity, And Religious Coping, Yu-Feng Emily Hu

Dissertations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a relatively recent diagnosis that results in significant personal and societal costs. Given the diversity of American mental health consumers, a more thorough understanding of PTSD and its relation to cultural factors may have important implications for treatment implementation and refinement. Cultural factors such as locus of control, religiosity, and religious coping have been frequently overlooked in trauma research, yet show a clear link to PTSD risk and symptomatology. This study examined these cultural factors in more detail with relation to race and trauma type and their combined influence on PTSD symptomatology. A national sample …

Assessment Variability Among States In Determining Part C Eligibility Criteria, April Siktar

Theses and Dissertations

Early intervention (EI), known as Part C, is an integral component of providing young children with individualized attention that enriches their development. The EI services are provided to children zero to two years old that are deemed eligible by specific diagnosis, clinical opinion, or based on assessment scores. States have flexibility on which assessments should be used and the qualifications of the examiner. The variations among states and districts can have implications on who is eligible to receive services throughout the country. The purpose of this study is to investigate the assessments and examiner's qualification in each state. The ongoing …

The Crisis Of Identity In Post-Revolutionary Cuban Film: A Sociological Analysis Of Strawberry And Chocolate, Andrew Zachary Shultz Aug 2015

The Crisis Of Identity In Post-Revolutionary Cuban Film: A Sociological Analysis Of Strawberry And Chocolate, Andrew Zachary Shultz

Kaleidoscope

This paper analyzes Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío´s Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) from the sociological perspective of film as a cultural text informed by the political, historical, and social world in which it is produced. A symbolic interactionist/cultural studies model is used as a guide for the interpretive and qualitative methods utilized in approaching the film. Of particular interest to the sociological analysis of the film is the changing political context of the Cuban Revolution during the “special period” of the early 1990s, the use of stereotypes in the characterization of the actors, and finally its representation of …

An Analysis Of United States-Iran International Relations, James Tyler Chapman

Kaleidoscope

My research strove to further the knowledge of United States-Iran international relations through comprehensive analysis. I investigated and presented information on the internal politics of Iran, and I analyzed and commented on the organization of the government of Iran. I critically examined the historical scholarship on the affairs of state between the United States and Iran, and I investigated the current state of affairs and prospects for the future. From this understanding, it became possible and necessary for rigorously logical and insightful decisions to be made in the current political environment in which emotions and passions dominate, and I probed …
