Toward A Two-Stage Model Of Free Categorization, Gregory J. Smith Sep 2015

Toward A Two-Stage Model Of Free Categorization, Gregory J. Smith

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This research examines how comparison of objects underlies free categorization, an essential component of human cognition. Previous results using our binomial labeling task have shown that classification probabilities are affected in a graded manner as a function of similarity, i.e., the number of features shared by two objects. In a similarity rating task, people also rated objects sharing more features as more similar. However, the effect of matching features was approximately linear in the similarity task, but superadditive (exponential) in the labeling task. We hypothesize that this difference is due to the fact that people must select specific objects to …

Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Over Individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? A Meta-Analysis Of Effective Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders In Middle Childhood, Emily A. Edwards Sep 2015

Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Over Individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? A Meta-Analysis Of Effective Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders In Middle Childhood, Emily A. Edwards

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Anxiety is a commonly diagnosed disorder in middle childhood that affects many aspects of the child’s life. Effective treatment is needed so that children are able to experience fewer or no symptoms of anxiety and to manage anxiety. Cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) is widely used as a treatment for children with anxiety. CBT can either be facilitated in an individual or group format but there are inconsistencies in the literature regarding which modality is most effective. A meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effectiveness of individual CBT (ICBT) and group CBT (GCBT) in treating school-aged children with anxiety disorders. Eligible …

Influence Of Psychological Factors On Climate Change Perceptions Held By Local Farmers In The Northeast Of Thailand, Suthirat Kittipongvises, Takashi Mino

Applied Environmental Research

Global climate change is considered one of the most critical socio-ecological challenges of the 21st century. In recent years extreme weather events have increased significantly in Thailand asin other parts of the world. In most cases, climatic variability has always been associated with its implications for agriculture. To date, however, there has been inconclusive understanding of farmers' capacity to detect climate change and its potential impact. This study therefore explores how Thai farmers perceive global climate change and, further, to examine the influence of psy-chological factors on these perceptions. The study used mixed research methods, with both quali-tative and quantitative …

The Political Economy Of Local Fracking Bans, Joshua C. Hall, Christopher Shultz, E. Frank Stephenson Sep 2015

The Political Economy Of Local Fracking Bans, Joshua C. Hall, Christopher Shultz, E. Frank Stephenson

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Concerns about harmful effects arising from the increased use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract underground fuel resources has led to efforts to ban the practice. Many townships in western New York, which lies above the gas-rich Marcellus shale formation, have enacted bans or moratoria. Using spatial econometric techniques, we examine factors related to townships' choice to adopt fracking bans and document the importance of spatial dependence when analyzing fracking bans. We find education levels, the poverty rate, and veterans groups are associated with an increased probability of a township banning or putting a moratorium on fracking.

African American Masculinity In The Wartime Diaries Of Two Vietnam Soldiers, Sharon D. Raynor Sep 2015

African American Masculinity In The Wartime Diaries Of Two Vietnam Soldiers, Sharon D. Raynor

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "African American Masculinity in the Wartime Diaries of Two Vietnam Soldiers" Sharon D. Raynor discusses an unpublished diary (1967-68) written by her father, Louis Raynor with the diary (1965-66) of David Parks that was revised and published as a memoir. By contextualizing the traditions of African American autographical writing and wartime diaries, Raynor analyzes how African American masculinity permeates the autobiographical structure in the Raynor and Parks diaries as each soldier interweaves a collective experience with a unique personal experience in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam experience challenged their ideologies about racial politics, but affirmed their masculine …

Death And Photography In East Asia: Funerary Use Of Portrait Photography, Jeehey Kim Sep 2015

Death And Photography In East Asia: Funerary Use Of Portrait Photography, Jeehey Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation expands and elaborates upon my 2009 project, 'Korean Funerary Photo-Portraiture,' which examined the uses of portrait photography in funerals and ancestor worship in Korea. By extending the geographic scope of the earlier project to encompass East Asia, its aim is to investigate how funerary photo-portraiture is intertwined with geopolitical issues across the region.

In order to explore the historical and socio-political layers of vernacular photography in East Asia, this dissertation compares the practice of funerary photo-portraiture in five countries by examining the basic concepts underpinning it. China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam all incorporate portrait photography into funerals …

Investigating The Correlation Between Freeway Service Levels And Freeway Service Patrol Assists, Nora Chin

Master's Theses

The Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) Freeway Service Patrol’s highway motorist response service is reporting a reduction in their service levels. We analyze the relationship between the reduction in the Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol’s (FSP) motorist assists and changes in vehicle miles traveled (VMT), California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported incidents, and cover research on the impact of new and old vehicle fleet turnover. VMT and CHP incidents have differential effects on FSP assists. Although incidents occurring on freeways with high traffic flows tend to cause more congestion, the trend in local VMT along Bay Area freeway corridors does …

The Effect Of Cause-Related Marketing And Motivation On Consumer Perceptions, Gina Mccoy, Randall A. Renstrom Sep 2015

The Effect Of Cause-Related Marketing And Motivation On Consumer Perceptions, Gina Mccoy, Randall A. Renstrom

Modern Psychological Studies

The present experiment investigated the relationship between motivational style (intrinsic and extrinsic) and cause-related marketing (CRM) on product perceptions. CRM pairs the sale of products with a donation to a specific charitable cause. It was predicted that consumers will have more positive perceptions of products sold through CRM campaigns, be more likely to buy such products paired with CRM, and express more positive attitudes toward companies using CRM. Furthermore, it was predicted that motivational style may impact those attitudes, with intrinsically-motivated individuals showing a greater affinity toward a product when it is paired with a CRM campaign. Overall, results largely …

Spatial Estimation: A Non-Bayesian Alternative, Hilary Barth, Ellen Lesser, Jessica Taggart, Emily Slusser Sep 2015

Spatial Estimation: A Non-Bayesian Alternative, Hilary Barth, Ellen Lesser, Jessica Taggart, Emily Slusser

Faculty Publications

A large collection of estimation phenomena (e.g. biases arising when adults or children estimate remembered locations of objects in bounded spaces; Huttenlocher, Newcombe & Sandberg, 1994) are commonly explained in terms of complex Bayesian models. We provide evidence that some of these phenomena may be modeled instead by a simpler non-Bayesian alternative. Undergraduates and 9- to 10-year-olds completed a speeded linear position estimation task. Bias in both groups’ estimates could be explained in terms of a simple psychophysical model of proportion estimation. Moreover, some individual data were not compatible with the requirements of the more complex Bayesian model.

Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment To Turkey, Burcak Polat, Cem Payaslıoğlu Sep 2015

Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment To Turkey, Burcak Polat, Cem Payaslıoğlu

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Despite the growing interest in foreign direct investment (FDI), substantial uncertainty still exists regarding what stimulates foreign investors to operate in a foreign market. Besides, previous studies have attributed the determinants of direct investments to locational and firmspecific factors. However, firm-specific and locational factors may vary across industries and their sub-sectors, as proposed by Dunning (1998). Using panel data for the 2007 to 2012 period, the major determinants of foreign investments into the manufacturing subsectors in Turkey are analyzed in this study. Strong evidence is found that turnover indices and new investment incentives introduced in 2009 have a positive impact …

Does Public Employment Reduce Unemployment?, Alberto Behar, Junghwan Mok Sep 2015

Does Public Employment Reduce Unemployment?, Alberto Behar, Junghwan Mok

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

We quantify the extent to which public-sector employment crowds out privatesector employment using specially assembled datasets for a large cross-section of developing and advanced countries, and discuss the implications for countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Caucasus and Central Asia. These countries simultaneously display high unemployment rates, low private-sector employment rates and high proportions of government-sector employment. Regressions of unemployment rates on public-sector employment point to full crowding out. This means that high rates of public employment, which incur substantial fiscal costs, do not reduce overall unemployment rates.

War-Fighting Or Enhanced Policing?: The Effectiveness Of Kill-Capture Tools And Tactics In The Post-9/11 Era, Jesse Paul Lehrke, Rahel Schomaker Sep 2015

War-Fighting Or Enhanced Policing?: The Effectiveness Of Kill-Capture Tools And Tactics In The Post-9/11 Era, Jesse Paul Lehrke, Rahel Schomaker

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

For more than ten years the so-called Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) has been shaping not only national security strategies, but also influenced the definition of the enemy being fought as well as the nature of and boundaries between tactics used in this war. While the discussion about anti-terror strategies and tactics on the political level is ongoing, (empirical) research on the efficiency and effectiveness of these measures is still limited. In our article, we examine the relative impact two counter-terrorism approaches – killing and capturing – have on several measures of effectiveness. Scrutinizing data from 2001-2011 in numerous specifications, …

Hidden In Plain Sight: The Story Of The Hunter College Collection Of Puerto Rican Graphic Arts, Sarah Laleman Ward Sep 2015

Hidden In Plain Sight: The Story Of The Hunter College Collection Of Puerto Rican Graphic Arts, Sarah Laleman Ward

Publications and Research

The Hunter College Collection of Puerto Rican Graphic Arts includes over 150 works produced between 1954 and 1985 and represents the work of forty-one artists. It is illustrative of the growth of the printmaking tradition in Puerto Rico during the twentieth century. Acquired through a misappropriation of funds by a student group in the mid-1980s and ultimately purchased by and displayed in the college, the story of this collection raises important questions regarding institutional responsibility for the purchase and stewardship of art objects. Should art be collected if no plans are made for its maintenance and care?

'May God Cure You': Contemporary Egyptian Therapeutic Landscapes Between Qur'anic Healing And Psychiatry, Ana Maria Vinea Sep 2015

'May God Cure You': Contemporary Egyptian Therapeutic Landscapes Between Qur'anic Healing And Psychiatry, Ana Maria Vinea

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Based on 19 months of fieldwork research in Cairo, this dissertation investigates the constitution and the practice of a therapeutic technique known as Qur'anic healing (al-'ilāj bi-l-qur'ān). In contemporary Egypt, as throughout the Middle East, the past decades have witnessed the increased visibility and popularity of this revivalist, Salafi-based therapy of jinn exorcism and counter-sorcery that is rooted in centuries-old Islamic practices of healing, all the while developing them into new configurations. During the same period, heated public debates stirred by the emergence of Qur'anic healing have occurred, debates in which psychiatrists have played a prominent role.

The community assessments were designed and implemented to establish a baseline of community awareness and action, an important step in community development and environmental sustainability. The aim was to: build community partnerships, identify key stakeholders, facilitate dialogues about concerns, identify local and external resources required for progress, and construct actions plans targeting key communal concerns. The assessments were found to be successful in engaging community members and identifying local needs and resources. However, challenges in intervention …

Nondysphoric Depressive Symptoms And Cognitive Abilities In Healthy Older Adults, Clint H. Norseth Sep 2015

Nondysphoric Depressive Symptoms And Cognitive Abilities In Healthy Older Adults, Clint H. Norseth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has shown that depression is associated with poorer cognitive performance and cognitive decline. Cognitive functions such as processing speed, language ability, memory, and executive functions have been found to be affected in older adults with depression. However, there is limited research focused on the effects of minimal or mild depressive symptoms in older adults who do not meet criteria for a depressive disorder. Older adults are more likely than any other population to endorse depressive symptoms in the absence of typical dysphoric symptoms that would qualify an individual for a depressive disorder. Understanding the effects of nondysphoric depressive symptoms …

Prostate Cancer Screening Intention Among Black Men: A Multivariate Analysis, Crystal Renee Clarke Sep 2015

Prostate Cancer Screening Intention Among Black Men: A Multivariate Analysis, Crystal Renee Clarke

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Black men, and widespread lack of screening contributes to the mortality burden. The purpose of this present study was to evaluate the effect of relationship intimacy with individual intent to screen using the digital rectal examination (DRE) among Black men. The human ecological theory of human development was a good fit for this present study, as individual health status and population health disparities are embedded in larger historical, geographic, socio-cultural, economic, and political contexts. The ecological framework allows researchers to attempt to identify the influences of all these factors. …

Elections Have Consequences: Moral Value Foundations Ensure Gridlock Through The Ballot Box, Gregory John Regts Sep 2015

Elections Have Consequences: Moral Value Foundations Ensure Gridlock Through The Ballot Box, Gregory John Regts

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the midst of unprecedented partisan polarization in the voting public and congressional gridlock in Washington, research in moral psychology has implicated reliance on differing moral value foundations between liberals and conservatives as a determinant of partisan divides. While Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) research has highlighted the effect of moral values on a variety of issues, little research has explained their effect on psychological factors and voting behavior related to fiscal concerns. Guided by Betancourt’s integrative model for studying culture, psychological factors, and behavior, the present study investigated the extent to which socially shared moral value foundations influence psychological reactions …

Indicators Of Ambiguous Loss In Families With Traumatic Brain Injured Members, Mynda Ohs Sep 2015

Indicators Of Ambiguous Loss In Families With Traumatic Brain Injured Members, Mynda Ohs

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

People who have encountered medical traumas can experience significant changes in their lives. As a result, the family members become caregivers and experience increased stress and ambiguous losses (AL). These losses are often unacknowledged even by the family and cause significant distress. It is important that the family acknowledge these losses and allow themselves time to grieve and adapt to the changes in their lives. While it is widely known that caregivers experience this stress, and programs exist to help support these families, there is less known about the effectiveness of these programs. This study has been designed to explore …
