Escalating Risk And The Moderating Effect Of Resistance To Peer Influence On The P200 And Feedback-Related Negativity, John Kiat, Elizabeth Straley, Jacob Cheadle
Escalating Risk And The Moderating Effect Of Resistance To Peer Influence On The P200 And Feedback-Related Negativity, John Kiat, Elizabeth Straley, Jacob Cheadle
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Young people frequently socialize together in contexts that encourage risky decision making, pointing to a need for research into how susceptibility to peer influence is related to individual differences in the neural processing of decisions during sequentially escalating risk. We applied a novel analytic approach to analyze EEG activity from college-going students while they completed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), a well-established risk-taking propensity assessment. By modeling outcome-processing-related changes in the P200 and feedback-related negativity (FRN) sequentially within each BART trial as a function of pump order as an index of increasing risk, our results suggest that analyzing the …

Translating The News: A Grounded Theory Of Care Initiation Byindividuals Living With Hiv, Joseph Perazzo, Donna Martsolf, Tracy Pritchard, Rebecca Tehan
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this research study was to develop a theoretical framework to explain the psychosocial process of care initiation in individuals living with HIV, and to identify the critical junctures that influence individuals living with HIV in their decision to initiate HIV care. Grounded theory method was used to identify the psychosocial process of care initiation by individuals living with HIV. Thirty individuals living with HIV (28 men, 2 women) shared their stories about initiating HIV care. Participants described a process in which they progressed through five distinct stages following diagnosis: a) receiving the news, b) interpreting the news, …

Pathways Into Political Party Membership:Case Studies Of Hong Kong Youth, Hoi-Yu Ng
The Qualitative Report
This article explores and conceptualizes the individual mobilization processes into political party membership of a sample of young people in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous and semi-democratic region under Chinese sovereignty where political parties are relatively underdeveloped. Based on life history interviews with 23 young party members, I found that the mobilization of young people into party membership comprises three different steps. I also found that not all young party members went through the same order of steps. In total, three orders of steps are identified, which create three different paths into party membership. Lastly, this article found that each mobilization …

Smart Decarceration: Guiding Concepts For An Era Of Criminal Justice Transformation, Matthew W. Epperson, Carrie Pettus-Davis
Smart Decarceration: Guiding Concepts For An Era Of Criminal Justice Transformation, Matthew W. Epperson, Carrie Pettus-Davis
Center for Social Development Research
The era of mass incarceration, which made the United States the world’s leading jailer, appears to be coming to an end. What is likely to follow is an era of decarceration, aimed at reducing the incarcerated population. In this working paper, we discuss the problems associated with mass incarceration and the current climate that is likely to make decarceration a reality. We discuss the importance of developing a “smart decarceration” approach—one that is effective, sustainable, and socially just. We then articulate interrelated goals for the era of decarceration, and offer guiding concepts that will help to meet these goals through …

The Seed For Oklahoma Kids Child Development Account Experiment: Accounts, Assets, Earnings, And Savings, Sondra G. Beverly, Margaret M. Clancy, Jin Huang, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
This brief presents the latest results from SEED for Oklahoma Kids, a pathbreaking randomized experiment to test the effects of automatic, universal, and progressive Child Development Accounts (CDAs) in a statewide sample. Key features of the CDA are automatic opening of a 529 account and an automatic initial $1,000 deposit. The results show that CDAs with automatic deposits invested in a 529 plan may enable children to accumulate meaningful levels of assets over time, even if their families do not contribute to the accounts. As the brief indicates, the new results also have key implications for public policy.

Longitudinal Bidirectional Relations Between Adolescents’ Sympathy And Prosocial Behavior, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Gustavo Carlo, Matthew G. Nielson
Faculty Publications
Despite the importance of understanding sympathy and prosocial behaviors, research on the development of these tendencies in adolescence remains relatively sparse. In the present study, we examined age trends and bidirectional longitudinal relations in sympathy and prosocial behaviors across early to middle adolescents. Participants were 500 12-year-olds at Time 1 (52% girls, 70% European American) who completed measures of sympathy and prosocial behaviors at 5 different time points, each approximately 1 year apart. Results showed significant bidirectional relations between sympathy and prosocial behaviors across all time points, and an initial decrease of prosocial behaviors followed by an increase into middle …

The Role Of Parental Warmth And Hostility On Adolescents’ Prosocial Behavior Toward Multiple Targets, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Matthew G. Nielson, Randal D. Day
Faculty Publications
The current study examined the influence that parental warmth/support and verbal hostility had on adolescents’ prosocial behavior toward multiple targets (stranger, friend, family) using multiple reporters (self, parent, observations). Data were taken from Times 2 and 3 of a longitudinal project and included 500 adolescents and their parents (M age of child at Time 2 12.34). Structural equation models suggested that mother warmth was associated with prosocial behavior toward family, while father warmth was associated with prosocial behavior toward friends. Findings also suggested that adolescents’ prosocial behavior was more consistently influenced by father hostility than it was by father warmth. …

In Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform College (Harvard UP, 2014) Mark Carnes argues that curricula such as “Reacting to the Past” engages students in subversive play in order to succeed in instilling concepts that have proved difficult to teach by other methods: critical thinking, empathy, leadership, a realistic view of history, and ultimately a better understanding of themselves. Such experiences, we have found, also foster inquiry and strategic thinking, core concepts of ACRL’s framework for information literacy.
Participants will experience an abbreviated “game day” session from the Reacting to the Past curriculum, to illustrate how the role playing …

Accessibility For All: New Laws And Strategies For Diverse Learners, Melissa Whitesell, Andrea Roberson Ms.
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The number of students with disabilities in the United States is steadily increasing. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2012, 11.3 percent of undergraduates reported some type of disability. The laws under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act regarding electronic and information technology (EIT) dictate changes that institutions must make to ensure accessibility for these students and the public at large.
All individuals, including those with disabilities, must have the tools for a world-class education offering them opportunities for success as a student and in the workplace. Due to rapid changes in information technology, this presents challenges …
“All About That Bass”: Source Evaluation For Music Performance Students, Elizabeth J. Weisbrod, Karen Garrison
“All About That Bass”: Source Evaluation For Music Performance Students, Elizabeth J. Weisbrod, Karen Garrison
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The information literacy needs of music students include not only the written word, but also scores and recordings. Music students need to be able to evaluate music sources in the same way an English composition student would evaluate written sources for a paper. What makes an edition of a musical score authoritative? What makes a recording reliable? Information literacy for music students involves learning to use scores, recordings, and musical research to better prepare their performances. Helping students develop the tools to evaluate musical editions and recordings assists the student in becoming a better overall musician and performer.

The ASE research model, Analyze, Search, Evaluate, developed by Don Latham and Melissa Gross with IMLS funding for teaching community college students remedial information literacy and research skills works remarkably well with international students studying English. The ASE research model can be incorporated into LibGuides and used to structure library classroom instruction especially in regards to vocabulary building within the disciplines. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how this process works toward discovering new language. The Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Portland State University is the oldest English immersion program for higher education in the Pacific Northwest. As the …

Librarianship After Detours: The Path Of Second Career Librarians, Carrie Moran, Erica England, Jenna Settles
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Librarianship is often a second career path, and librarians typically have varied academic backgrounds. A librarian’s academic and professional career prior to librarianship can impact and inform one’s library career, particularly outreach and instruction activities related to information literacy.
This panel will feature three librarians who will discuss how their diverse backgrounds have impacted the way they work with students within and outside of the classroom. Two of the librarians are from public research universities, and one represents a large two year college system. Their academic backgrounds include degrees in Psychology, English, and Business, while their professional backgrounds include crisis …

High School To College Transition Initiatives: Making It A Reality, Denise Woetzel, Anita B. Tarbox
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The challenge continues for both secondary and post-secondary institutions to help high school students successfully transition to college. High school and college librarians share common goals with teaching faculty in helping students succeed and include improving college students’ first-year experience as well as fostering lifelong learning. One step towards bridging this gap is for librarians to work together with their constituencies in improving students’ information literacy skills. Historically, librarians at Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA have collaborated with high school librarians and teachers in the Richmond area on an ad hoc basis upon request. Most recently, Reynolds librarians have …

On September 22nd, 2015 I visited IBA's main campus next to the University of Karachi and was given a tour of the facility by Mr. Haris Siddiqui, Manager (Alumni Affairs). Afterwards, I met Dr. Ishrat Husain, Dean & Director of IBA (must see here: https://ishrathusain.iba.edu.pk/) but also a Forum member to boot. To say that IBA has been transformed under the leadership of Dr. Husain (2008 to current) would perhaps not convey the full meaning. "Metamorphosed" or "transmuted" may describe it much better. At my time in early 70's there were perhaps 200 students, now there are over 3000. At …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
With the increase in online learning, identifying new ways to develop the information literacy skills of distance learners is paramount. Developing a research question, selecting resources, searching databases, refining search results, getting full text, and citing sources in the online environment can be especially challenging for nontraditional learners who may not have the same digital know-how as traditional students or digital natives. Global Campus librarians at Central Michigan University (CMU) travel to CMU’s remote centers to provide information literacy instruction for core research courses. But how do they reach everyone, including students taking classes online? Because distance students are typically …

In Fall 2013, academic librarians at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) set out to develop their own instructional assessment test bank to evaluate library program effectiveness, improve the student learning experience and determine if library services were effectively developing information literacy skills in learners. Using the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (2000) adopted by ACRL in conjunction with their own information literacy plan, they focused on four critical competency areas: information access points, search tool selection, library website utilization, and classification schemes.
This panel presentation provides an overview of the challenges and successes they experienced in creating and …
