Do Economic Development Efforts Benefit All? Business Attraction And Income Inequality, Xiaobing Shuai

This paper extends the current literature on county-level income distribution in the United States by explicitly exploring the effect of business-attraction efforts by state governments. Using county-level job attraction and retention data from 2000 to 2005 in Virginia to explain the income distribution from 2006 to 2010, while controlling for demographic and socioeconomic conditions of local communities, this study shows that bringing in manufacturing jobs can reduce income inequality at the local level while attracting jobs in professional and business services tends to increase local income inequality. The culture composition of the student population in community colleges has expanded, and includes larger percentages of African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans than are found in other higher education institutions. Previous research has shown counseling to be valuable among various age, sex, religious, socioeconomic, and racial groups. Providing psychosocial support to parents whose infants are hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can improve parents’ functioning as well as their relationships with their babies. Yet, few NICUs offer staff education that teaches optimal methods of communication with parents in distress. Limited staff education in how to best provide psychosocial support to families is one factor that may render those who work in the NICU at risk for burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress syndrome. Employee satisfaction has been found to have a strong relationship with perceived job security. This study explored job insecurity in an unstable global economy. Specifically, it examined internal attributes of employees, hypothesizing that such attributes would enable employees to better cope with work-related stressors such as job insecurity. Specific attributes of personality and employability were assessed as potential moderators of job satisfaction and security, utilizing the theory of work adjustment and person-environment correspondence as theoretical frameworks. Purpose: This study aims to find out the information literacy competence of professional nurses in the Ho Municipality of Ghana in their pursuit of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).

Design/methodology/approach: This study used the descriptive research strategy to describe the experience of information literacy among professional nurses in the Ho Municipality of Ghana. It used the purposive sampling method to select the various health facilities and the professional nurses. A total of 138 questionnaires out of 151 questionnaires that were administered were retrieved. The responses were presented and analysed based on the objectives of the study.

Student Feedback has become increasingly important as libraries tailor their services to the customer. A team from Texas A&M University Libraries analyzed student feedback forms to determine impressions from library information literacy classes. This paper analyzes student feedback forms through both traditional assessment and a coded-analysis using ATLAS.ti. These analyses determined student participation by number of attendees, student classification, and departmental majors. Overall themes emerged from students’ comments that provided insight into the information literacy sessions. This study investigated the extent to which gender difference determine the reading habit and academic achievement of undergraduate medical students of University of Ibadan. Questionnaire was used to collect data from four hundred and twenty nine medical students randomly selected from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Findings from the study revealed gender difference in the academic achievement of medical students in favour of male students. This research is a longitudinal study of differential depictions of men and women in top country music from 1944 through 2012. The study attempts to understand the gender system as theorized by Ridgeway using the analytic heuristics of cognitive sociologists and the methods of ethnographic content analysts. Findings include the various axes upon which women and men are differentially characterized over time including men and women's behaviors within romantic relationships, involvement in deviance and crime, work and the use of economic capital, their bodies, and differences in cultural capital such as education.

A Civil War prison camp operated by the Confederacy known as Camp Lawton was once considered the largest prison in the world. This label was attributed to the fact that Lawton’s stockade enclosed 42 acres. The historical record does not have a clear picture of who built it. Newspaper interviews claim the construction was carried out by 500 impressed slave laborers and 300 Union POWs, but these lack the credibility of official orders. In this paper we argue that the ability of people to freely trade, enter into contracts, and start businesses in a system of private property and the rule of law is crucial for productive entrepreneurship. One measure of how freely individuals can engage in economic activity is the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index. After examining the economic policies that harm economic freedom and possibly entrepreneurship, we highlight the correspondence between economic freedom and a number of measures of entrepreneurship. We conclude with some thoughts regarding future research involving economic freedom and entrepreneurship.

This chapter synthesizes and elaborates on much of the existing research using the Economic Freedom of North America (EFNA) index. Our consensus after reading this literature is that the EFNA index, similarly to the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index, is largely positively related with “good” outcomes, and negatively related with “bad” ones, although there are a few exceptions. The literature using the EFNA is growing rapidly and can provide a useful guide towards future policy changes and economic outcomes.

Given the push toward renewable and alternative energy, a new energy mix is emerging. Wind is the fastest growing source of renewable electricity in the United States. The siting of wind turbines has proven controversial with multiple operations facing local resistance. Opponents cite issues such as noise, bird deaths, and aesthetics. Given that farmer portfolios are heavily comprised of land assets, the possibility that surrounding wind energy operations may reduce agricultural land value is of concern. We find that congressional influences affect the amount of airport subsidies that a congressional district receives from the Essential Air Service (EAS) program. The EAS program was passed with the goal of helping to continue commercial air service to rural communities following the deregulation of the airline industry. Using subsidy data from 1998-2014, we find strong evidence that subsidies are higher in districts having congressional representation on the House Transportation Committee. Representation on the House Appropriations Committee is also associated with higher subsidies. Our empirical results, combined with news reports, are consistent with the EAS serving private as well as …

Nonpublic Competition And Public School Performance: Evidence From West Virginia, Richard J. Cebula, Joshua C. Hall, Maria Y. Tackett

In this study, we investigate whether nonpublic school enrollment affects the performance of public school districts. If homeschooling and private schools act as competition, public school districts test scores should be positively associated with nonpublic enrollment. Using data on West Virginia county school districts, and controlling for endogeneity with an instrumental variables approach, we find that a one standard deviation increase in relative nonpublic enrollment in a county is associated with statistically significant increases in public school district test scores. An Investigation Of Confucius Institute’S Effects On China’S Ofdi Via Cultural Difference And Institutional Quality, Chensheng Xu, Feng Yao, Fan Zhang

This paper uses a panel data of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from 2004-2012 to investigate the influence of Confucius Institute on China's OFDI. We find that Confucius Institute, as a comprehensive platform for China's foreign cultural exchange, has a significant positive effect on China’s OFDI. Interestingly, the positive effect can be reduced with larger cultural difference and can be increased in host countries with lower institutional quality. Correspondingly, we find that Confucius Institute’s impact on China’s OFDI is more obvious in host countries with smaller cultural difference or lower institutional quality.

Adam Smith famously argued that increased competition in religion would result in more religious tolerance and that the benefits of competition in the marketplace would also be seen in religious instruction when many religious sects are tolerated. We use a cross-section of a maximum of 167 countries to explore whether increased religious competition results in less governmental regulation of religion and less governmental favoritism of religion. Our measure of religious regulation and favoritism comes from the Association of Religion Data Archives.
