The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn
The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
“Of all the challenges in education today, I can think of none greater than the challenge of motivating, educating, and empowering black male learners” (Kafele, 2012, p. 67). Research documents the struggles of African American males in society and education. There is concern among educators for role models for young people to emulate (Lines, 2001). To explore President Obama as a role model and the impact of his historic election on African American recent high school male graduates, a qualitative research study was used. A phenomenological design helped described the “essence” of the phenomenon— the election of an African American …
Psychopathy And Attachment: The Effect Of Security Priming On Psychopathy In A College Student Sample, Blake D. Herd
Psychopathy And Attachment: The Effect Of Security Priming On Psychopathy In A College Student Sample, Blake D. Herd
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Psychopathy has been defined as a pattern of negative behaviors, social interactions, and affective features, including impoverishment of emotion, unethical and manipulative actions, and impulsivity (Neumann & Hare, 2008). It is estimated that between 15 to 30 percent of incarcerated adults meet the criteria for psychopathy (Hare, 1991, 1996; Salekin, Rogers, Ustad, & Sewell, 1998). Because psychopathy is linked with deviant behaviors and a significant portion of incarcerated adults are high in psychopathy, methods of reducing psychopathy are needed. The current longitudinal study sought to reduce state psychopathy levels through secure attachment priming. It was first hypothesized that the mean …
Hypomania And The Effects Of Working Memory Load On Risk-Taking, Joseph B. Todd
Hypomania And The Effects Of Working Memory Load On Risk-Taking, Joseph B. Todd
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Hypomania is an episodic mood state that closely resembles mania, and it is characterized by irritability, euphoria, racing thoughts, and impulsivity. The present study focuses on risk-taking, a behavioral manifestation of impulsivity, and the potential working memory mechanisms responsible for eliciting this behavior in people affected by hypomanic symptoms. Specifically, research suggests that taxing working memory accelerates the process by which individuals with high levels of hypomanic symptoms engage in risk-taking. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects on hypomanic traits and working memory taxation on a behavioral measure of risk-taking. One hundred and forty-five participants …
The Importance Of Restraint In Gauging The Effects Of Ego Depletion On Alcohol Motivation, Danielle B. Allen
The Importance Of Restraint In Gauging The Effects Of Ego Depletion On Alcohol Motivation, Danielle B. Allen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Despite increased awareness of complications, the use and abuse of alcohol remains a problem in the United States. With regard to drinking, individuals encounter situations in which they must maintain a balance between temptation to drink and the need to regulate alcohol intake. Maintaining this balance requires the use of self-control. For this reason, lack of self-control has been implicated a potential influence on excessive alcohol consumption. The Strength Model of Self-Control (Baumeister, Vohs, & Tice, 2007) posits that self-control draws on a limited resource that becomes depleted following repeated use. The term “ego depletion” is used to refer to …
An Examination Between High And Low Optimistic Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes' Perceptions Of Preferred Leadership Behavior In Sport: A Qualitative Investigation, Alexander C. Roorda
An Examination Between High And Low Optimistic Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes' Perceptions Of Preferred Leadership Behavior In Sport: A Qualitative Investigation, Alexander C. Roorda
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Numerous researchers have examined preferred sport leadership behaviors from both the coach and athlete perspectives (Beam, Serwatka, & Wilson, 2004; Chelladurai, & Carron, 1983; Freakley, Czech, Harris, & Burdette, 2012; Turman, 2013; Weinburg, & Gould, 2010). However, there is limited research in student-athlete personality dispositions and how those might influence student-athlete perceptions of preferred leadership behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to examine views of leadership in light of certain personality dispositions. This research examined the potential influence of optimism (Abramson, et al, 2000) on qualitative descriptions of preferred leadership behaviors using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport …
Cues Of Colorism: The Psychological, Sociocultural, And Developmental Differences Between Light-Skinned And Dark-Skinned African-Americans, Tasia M. Pinkston
Cues Of Colorism: The Psychological, Sociocultural, And Developmental Differences Between Light-Skinned And Dark-Skinned African-Americans, Tasia M. Pinkston
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Skin color biases, henceforth referred to as colorism, are the biased judgments, attitudes and behaviors toward an individual based on the lightness or darkness of their skin. Available research on the topic has examined a select group of variables, such as mate selection, self-esteem and perceived attractiveness. However, there is no single study on differences between African-Americans across several domains, including their psychological (skin color satisfaction and self-esteem), sociocultural (media influence on appearance and discriminatory events), and developmental (ethnic identity) well-being. Moreover, there is no research on differences in these variables between African-Americans reared in rural versus non-rural areas. To …
Tornado Trouble: How Can Current Tornado Warnings Be Improved?, Jonathan P. Evans
Tornado Trouble: How Can Current Tornado Warnings Be Improved?, Jonathan P. Evans
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
There are many unnecessary deaths from tornadoes every year (NOAA.org, 2013). Although there have been great advancements in tornado warning systems (Coleman, Knupp, Spann, Elliot, & Peters, 2010), more changes to systems could be made to motivate people to take action in preparation for tornadoes (Brotzge & Donner, 2013). Protection motivation theory outlines the process by which we assess threats and decide whether or not preventative actions are worth performing. If the threat is perceived as severe enough and the preventative actions are seen as capable of mitigating the threat, the individual is motivated to act (Rogers, 2000). One means …
Navigating The Faa’S Turbulent Airspace In The United States Regarding Uavs, Michael T. Searcy
Navigating The Faa’S Turbulent Airspace In The United States Regarding Uavs, Michael T. Searcy
Faculty Publications
There has been a significant increase in the use of UAVs throughout the world to aid in archaeological investigations. Unfortunately the current U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has enforced strict policies that prohibit most institutions and private firms to use these aerial vehicles. As a result archaeologists in the United States are falling behind in implementing an important tool in archaeological reconnaissance. This paper outlines the progress made thus far by the FAA to reform these regulations.

Explorations In Viejo Period Archaeology At The Vista Del Valle Site In Chihuahua, Mexico, Michael T. Searcy, Todd Pitezel
Faculty Publications
Since Charles Di Peso’s excavations from 1958 to 1961, there has been little research on the Viejo period (700–1200 A.D.) in the northern Casas Grandes area. As director of the Proyecto Arqueológico Chihuahua, Jane Kelley and her colleagues have added significantly to our knowledge of this time period in the southern area where this cultural tradition also flourished. Following her lead, we recently embarked to better understand the Viejo period in the north by excavating at a site along the Palanganas River, just south of the Casas Grandes River valley. This paper reports the initial results of our 2015 excavations …

Trait Forgiveness And Enduring Vulnerabilities: Neuroticism And Catastrophizing Influence Relationship Satisfaction Via Less Forgiveness, Scott R. Braithwaite, Cindy M. Mitchell, Edward A. Selby, Frank D. Fincham
Faculty Publications
Two studies examine whether specific cognitive tendencies and underlying personality traits inhibit the tendency to forgive and, in turn, decrease relationship satisfaction among emerging adults in committed romantic relationships (median relationship duration 1–2 years). In Study 1 (N = 355), trait forgiveness had a positive, direct association with later relationship satisfaction and mediated the effect of neuroticism on relationship satisfaction. In Study 2 (N = 354), forgiveness had a positive, direct association with relationship satisfaction and mediated the association between catastrophic rumination and relationship satisfaction. Forgiveness mediated changes in relationship satisfaction over time, with greater trait forgiveness predicting higher relationship …
Invisible Suffering: Practitioner Reflections On Peacebuilding Programs With Youth Exposed To Traumatic Stressors In Intergroup Conflict, Liza Hester
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For decades, the international community has recognized that youth are some of the most vulnerable to mental and emotional distress within the intractable and cyclical nature of identity-based violent conflict. Exposure to traumatic stressors within these intergroup conflicts poses unique risks not only to the neurological and social development of youth, but also to the capacities of youth to fully participate in peacebuilding interventions. The peacebuilding field has yet to strongly consider how traumatic stress affects dynamics within programs for youth and how these programs may need to modify expectations of youth’s cognitive, social, and emotional functioning to account for …

Revisiting Democratization In Myanmar And Indonesia From A Comparative Perspective, Thu Thi Anh Nguyen
Revisiting Democratization In Myanmar And Indonesia From A Comparative Perspective, Thu Thi Anh Nguyen
Journal of Social Sciences
Southeast Asia is one of the most interesting spots for democratization in the world today. The regional diversity is made up by: Indonesia, the world's third largest democratic nation, the Philippines, Asia's oldest democracy, and the consolidated democracies of Malaysia, Thailand, and other types of authoritarian rule. Besides this diversity, the transition from authoritarian rule to democracy in the region also attracts academic attention. Myanmar and Indonesia are good examples of the political transformation from the authoritarianism under the military government to democratic forms of government. However, after the resignation of Ne-Win in 1988, Burma still remained a military dictatorship, …
Renewable Energy Development And Environmental Justice In Thailand: A Case Of Biomass Power Plant In Roi-Et Province, Yeji Yoo
Journal of Social Sciences
This paper reviews the policies and practices of renewable energy development and biomass power projects in Thailand. Thailand has allowed private power producers to generate energy from biomass, as an important source of renewable energy, in order to increase energy security and to reduce CO2 emissions. However, some biomass projects in Thailand have resulted in negative environmental effects and social problems, such as air pollution and health problems for villagers near the projects, which thus create environmental injustices. Applying the concept of environmental justice, the research examines impacts and benefits of the biomass project on the environment through a case …
The Emergence Of Public-Private-Social Partnership (Ppsp) In Very Small Power Producer (Vspp) Industry: A Case Study Of Mae Jo Micro-Hydro Power Project: The Implication For Environmental Governance, Thita Orn-In
Journal of Social Sciences
Electricity from renewable sources produced by Very Small Power Producer (VSPP) is a promising scheme that not only strengthens energy security, but also provides solutions to the problem of sustainability and environmental governance. In the future, community's VSPPs will be an important contributing factor for Thailand's 25 percent Renewable Energy production to be met, but currently this issue received inadequate attention. A study at Mae Kam Pong's Micro Hydro power project was conducted in order to illustrate that multi-partner governance. This community's VSPP project marks a new paradigm of decentralized, inclusive and green energy production. Success, challenges as well as …

Social Enterprise And Promotion Of Safe Migration Among Returned Migrants: Case Studies Of A Credit Union In Bone District Of South Sulawesi Province Indonesia, Fatimana Agustinanto
Journal of Social Sciences
Indonesia is one of the largest sending countries of migrant workers in the Southeast Asia Region. There are approximately 4.3 million documented and 1.7 million undocumented Indonesian migrant workers living abroad (U.S. Department of State, 2012). Unfortunately, significant numbers of them migrated unsafely thus vulnerable to be trafficked in the destination countries. The Government of Indonesia and civil society organizations have been working together to promote safe migration and address human trafficking. This paper is trying to (1) examine civil society group involvement in promoting safe migration, (2) investigate credit union roles in promoting safe migration through economic security, and …
Christian Faith-Based Development: A Case Study Of World Vision Foundation Of Thailand In Karen Hill Tribe Communities, Phoebe Yee Kai Ling
Christian Faith-Based Development: A Case Study Of World Vision Foundation Of Thailand In Karen Hill Tribe Communities, Phoebe Yee Kai Ling
Journal of Social Sciences
There is a need to understand how faith-based development organisations (FBDOs) express their religious identity, values and beliefs in development practice. Using the World Vision Foundation of Thailand (WVFT) as a case study, this paper examines the extent to which Christian values, beliefs and identity shape the international organisation's understanding of its development programme with Karen hill-tribe communities in Mae Sariang, northern Thailand. This paper analyses World Vision's concepts of 'transformational development' (TD), 'Christian Witness' and church partnerships in practice, where development is not only the improvement of material well-being of the poor, but also their experience with God and …

Transformative Pedagogy: An Evaluation Of The Use Of The Learning To Live Together (Ltlt) Principles In Higher Secondary Schools In Thailand, Muara Cusack, Claudine Claridad
Journal of Social Sciences
It has been almost 20 years since the concept of learning to live together (LTLT), one of the four pillars of learning, was endorsed by UNESCO as a vitally important element for peaceful and successful living for the 21st century. This research is an attempt to evaluate if LTLT has been successfully implemented through transformative pedagogy in senior high schools in Thailand. LTLT competencies encompass the following skills: knowledge of others; understanding of discrimination, empathy, acceptance, cultural sensitivity, communication skills, community involvement, teamwork, trust, tolerance, political participation, and concern for the environment. It is argued that if taught correctly, these …
The Making Of Southeast Asia, Sida Sornsri
The Making Of Southeast Asia, Sida Sornsri
Journal of Social Sciences
This book, "The making of Southeast Asia," is composed of 9 chapters. The introduction in chapter one covers region, regionalism and regional identity which concentrate on unity in diversity, interaction and identity. The author explores the issue of identity in the international relations of Southeast Asia, which is understood as "Regional Identity." He argues "the regionness and regional identity have lurked beneath the surface of major issues in the foreign policy and international relations of Southeast Asia States." I agreed with the author's major issues, such as the end of the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia and the …
Thailand's Move From A Pity To A Rights-Based Understanding Of Disability, Michelle Proyer
Thailand's Move From A Pity To A Rights-Based Understanding Of Disability, Michelle Proyer
Journal of Social Sciences
More often than not disability - as most other minority-related topics - is perceived as of neglect able interest in policy design. Recent developments show an increased reference towards persons with disabilities and the enablement of their equal and independent lives in Thai legislative. There are several questions that arise from this observation: 1) What led to this development? 2) To which extent is it related to the signature of international agreements (such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, UNCRPD in 2008), developments in other (ASEAN) countries, a change in public awareness or the …

Rethinking Modernization Theory In The Study Of Thai Politics, Noppon Phon-Amnuai
Rethinking Modernization Theory In The Study Of Thai Politics, Noppon Phon-Amnuai
Journal of Social Sciences
This article is set out to understand the nature of Modernization theory by arguing that the widely used concepts of modernization theory in a study of Thai politics have failed to explain the behavior of the middle-class and the emergences of authoritarianism in the last decade. This is because scholars have embraced only "mainstream Modernization", which emphasizes the fact that the correlation between economic development and democracy is relevant and positive. And the middle-class are celebrated as the leading actor in bringing about democracy. However, this is just one point of view. In fact, according to modernization theory, the correlation …
