A Synthesis Of 20 Years Of Research On Sexual Risk Taking Among Asian/Pacific Islander Men Who Have Sex With Men In Western Countries, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Over the past two decades, there has emerged a body of literature documenting a number of risk factors associated with Asian/Pacific Islander men who have sex with men’s unsafe sexual behaviors. This study aims to systematically review existing empirical studies and synthesize research results into a social–ecological framework using a mixed research synthesis. Empirical research articles published in peer-reviewed journals between January 1990 and June 2013 were identified in six databases, including PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstract, CINAL, and Web of Knowledge. Both quantitative and qualitative studies were included. Two analysts independently reviewed the articles, and findings were …

Ontology Alignment With Mappings Published In The Purdue Research Repository, Line C. Pouchard, Michael N. Huhns

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

ESIP has been collecting and hosting Earth and Environmental ontologies in the ESIP Ontology Portal. But these ontologies have very different degrees of quality and curation. One way to ascertain this degree of quality is to locate terms with similar semantics between two ontologies and upload these mappings into the Portal. This work describes how we provide backend mappings between classes in ontologies using Agreement Maker Light, a winning algorithm from the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative. We use the OWL equivalence relationship to discover similarities between concept labels. The mappings, in the form of rdf triples are published in the …

21st Century Tattoo Identification And Information Sharing Thesis, Christina Smith

Master’s Theses and Projects

Currently existing is minimal research on the concepts: tattoo identification procedures and information sharing challenges among law enforcement. This research contributes to the literature by examining: how Massachusetts police officers feel about tattoo identification, how they catalog tattoos, and the effectiveness of their technology to share information among departments about suspect’s tattoos. This research is unique because it evaluates whether or not tattoo identification procedures affect information sharing challenges.

Tattoos have a history dating back at least 5,000 years, in fact, an archeological find in the 1990s, was a mummy with 57 tattoos (Kent & Graber, 2012). Presently, tattoo popularity …

Towards News Verification: Deception Detection Methods For News Discourse, Yimin Chen, Victoria L. Rubin, Niall Conroy Jan 2015

Towards News Verification: Deception Detection Methods For News Discourse, Yimin Chen, Victoria L. Rubin, Niall Conroy

FIMS Presentations

News verification is a process of determining whether a particular news report is truthful or deceptive. Deliberately deceptive (fabricated) news creates false conclusions in the readers’ minds. Truthful (authentic) news matches the writer’s knowledge. How do you tell the difference between the two in an automated way? To investigate this question, we analyzed rhetorical structures, discourse constituent parts and their coherence relations in deceptive and truthful news sample from NPR’s “Bluff the Listener”. Subsequently, we applied a vector space model to cluster the news by discourse feature similarity, achieving 63% accuracy. Our predictive model is not significantly better than chance …

A Moral Developmental Perspective On Children's Eyewitness Identification: Does Intent Matter?, Toni Spring, Herbert D. Saltzstein, Bianca Vidal Jan 2015

A Moral Developmental Perspective On Children's Eyewitness Identification: Does Intent Matter?, Toni Spring, Herbert D. Saltzstein, Bianca Vidal

Publications and Research

Plain English Abstract These studies are based on the assumption that when adults, adolescents or children identify someone as the "guilty" one, i.e., the person who committed the act, they are not only making an identification based on memory and thinking, but also a moral decision. This is because, by the act of identifying or not identifying someone, the eyewitness runs the risk of either convicting an innocent person , i.e., making false positive error or letting a guilty person go free, i.e., a false negative error. Our interest is less in the overall accuracy of their identifications and more …

Managing Classified Information: Transparency And Government Surveillance Progam A Comparison Between The Bush Administration And The Obama Administration, Ismail Soujaa

Student Theses and Dissertations

As of policy choices, the two presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush took different approaches towards transparency and secrecy. They diverged in their policies of managing federal information and their administrations records. Accordingly, the Bush administration and Obama administration had both implied the concept of transparency a new avenue for the public's participation and communication. Despite the rhetoric and wordy promise of transparency, Presidents Bush and Obama painted their administrations with secrecy and covert operations. They tightened up the cap on their administrations by changing the purpose and text of the Freedom of Information Act. However, there were variations …

Exploring The Lived-Experience Of Limerence: A Journey Toward Authenticity, Lynn Willmott, Evie Bentley

The Qualitative Report

Limerence is an acute onset, unexpected, obsessive attachment to one person, the Limerent Object, which is rarely reported in scientific literature. Presented here is an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the livedexperience of six international Limerent respondents. The condition's unique and common journey is conceptualised in a Limerence Trajectory, which is characterized by generally sequential yet overlapping super-ordinate themes. The themes primarily regard experiences of ruminative thinking, free floating anxiety and depression temporarily fixated and the disintegration of the self. These themes are further linked to an inclination to reintegrate unresolved past life(s) experiences and to progress to a state …

Data Information Literacy: Librarians, Data, And The Education Of A New Generation Of Researchers, Jake Carlson, Lisa R. Johnston

Purdue University Press Books

Given the increasing attention to managing, publishing, and preserving research datasets as scholarly assets, what competencies in working with research data will graduate students in STEM disciplines need to be successful in their fields? And what role can librarians play in helping students attain these competencies? In addressing these questions, this book articulates a new area of opportunity for librarians and other information professionals, developing educational programs that introduce graduate students to the knowledge and skills needed to work with research data. The term “data information literacy” has been adopted with the deliberate intent of tying two emerging roles for …

Experience Mandatory: Assessing The Impact Of Previous Career And Educational Experience On Lis Education And The Academic Library Job Hunt, Sojourna J. Cunningham, Ingrid J. Ruffin

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Since 2002, 97% of librarian jobs posted in American Libraries have required an American Library Association (ALA) accredited master’s degree (2004). The ALA Committee on Accreditation provides a general framework for library master’s program curriculum, “through a variety of educational experiences, for the study of theory, principles, practice, and values necessary for the provision of service in libraries and information agencies and in other contexts.” (Accreditation, 2014). ALA curriculum requirements are broad, however, so courses and requirements within ALA degree granting institutions vary immensely from program to program.

Cmc, Communication Skills And The Millennial Generation, Carmelyn Daley-Hinkens

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative, phenomenological study explored both the lived experiences of Millennial journalists’ preferred style of intra-organizational communication with stakeholders from other generations, and non-Millennial supervisors’ preferred styles of interpersonal communication in the workplace. The primary theoretical framework for this project was guided by Buber’s philosophy of dialogic ethics and Philipsen’s speech codes theory as both focus on better understanding how interlocutors speak to each other and form unique, lasting relationships. Data collection involved guided face-to-face or phone interviews with 10 Millennial journalists and 10 non-Millennial supervisors. Data analysis followed constant comparison analysis (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Five themes emerged from …
