Walking The Walk: The Moderating Role Of Proactive Parenting On Adolescents' Value-Congruent Behaviors, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Ashley M. Fraser, James M. Harper

Faculty Publications

The current study longitudinally examined adolescents' internalization of values in four domains (drug use, prosocial, school, friends), and how these values were differentially related to behaviors (delinquency, prosocial behavior, school engagement, and deviant peer association) as a function of proactive parenting. Participants included 335 adolescents (M age of child at Time 2 = 12.28, SD = .99, 51% female) and their parents. Analyses examined associations between adolescents' values at Time 3 and corresponding behaviors at Time 4, and the moderating role of proactive parenting (assessed at Time 2 using cluster analysis). Results suggested that adolescents with the most …

Implications Of A Managed Floating Exchange Rate System On The Interest-Rate Behavior Of Singapore, Jingjing Wei Apr 2012

Implications Of A Managed Floating Exchange Rate System On The Interest-Rate Behavior Of Singapore, Jingjing Wei

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Singapore and Hong Kong are two similar economies, but they have rather different monetary systems and exchange-rate regimes. Singapore’s managed floating exchange rate regime contrasts with Hong Kong’s currency board system (CBS) featured by the Hong Kong–United States dollar peg. In this paper, we appraise the implications of the managed floating exchange rate regimes on the interest-rate behavior of Singapore. We examine the Singapore-US interest differential under the Singapore’s exchange-rate regimes during the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), current Global Financial Crisis and none-crisis periods by using generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model. We hope that the good performance of Singapore’s …

An Experimental Study About Effective Factors Of First-Day Offer Pricing : Taking Stock Markets As An Example, Yi Liu

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

The author examines the literature with respect to the pricing of initial public offerings and focus upon the effective factors of pricing. Using a data base of all share offerings undertaken in Hong Kong over a one year period (in 2007), the author finds that there is considerable evidence for the proposition that large and well-capitalized companies tend to price their share offerings at a higher absolute level in order to get a higher level of first-day closing price. Using classical statistical methods, the author finds that the pricing strategy of offering companies is connected to shareholders’ desire of the …

Encoding Of Sensory Prediction Errors In The Human Cerebellum., John Schlerf, Richard B Ivry, Jörn Diedrichsen Apr 2012

Encoding Of Sensory Prediction Errors In The Human Cerebellum., John Schlerf, Richard B Ivry, Jörn Diedrichsen

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

A central tenet of motor neuroscience is that the cerebellum learns from sensory prediction errors. Surprisingly, neuroimaging studies have not revealed definitive signatures of error processing in the cerebellum. Furthermore, neurophysiologic studies suggest an asymmetry, such that the cerebellum may encode errors arising from unexpected sensory events, but not errors reflecting the omission of expected stimuli. We conducted an imaging study to compare the cerebellar response to these two types of errors. Participants made fast out-and-back reaching movements, aiming either for an object that delivered a force pulse if intersected or for a gap between two objects, either of which …

We examined the effect of both stigmas on self-reported depressive symptoms in a sample of HIV+ Latino men who have sex with men (MSM). We administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-1A), the Multidimensional Measure of Internalized HIV Stigma Scale (MMIHS), and the …

Eti‐385 As A Novel Anti‐Emetic Against Drug Induced Emesis, Theresa Fennell, James Lucot, Samantha Spitak, Emily Smith, Teresa Garret Apr 2012

Eti‐385 As A Novel Anti‐Emetic Against Drug Induced Emesis, Theresa Fennell, James Lucot, Samantha Spitak, Emily Smith, Teresa Garret

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Drugs currently used to prevent emesis (nausea and vomiting) target only one or a few of the pathways used by emetic stimuli to trigger the reflex. Thus, an anti-emetic drug will only be effective against some stimuli. Prior work determined that 8-OH-DPAT (DPAT, a 5-HT1A agonist) was a universally effective anti-emetic. Although DPAT prevented emesis, it also elicited an extreme anxiety response making it unsuitable for therapeutic use. Presently, there exists no universal anti-emetic drug. We tested a proprietary drug developed from DPAT, ETI-385, which successfully prevented emesis in musk shrews against chemotherapy, drug and motion stimuli. For FDA purposes, …

The Effect Of Weight On The Perception Of Political Candidates, Kennedy Alix Costantino Apr 2012

The Effect Of Weight On The Perception Of Political Candidates, Kennedy Alix Costantino

Honors Theses

Chris Christie recently visited the famous “Wailing Wall” in Jerusalem, Israel, during his first trip abroad as governor of New Jersey. The New York Post reported on his trip with the headline “The Whale at the Wall” (Campanile 2012). Given headlines like this, it is easy to see anecdotal evidence of the stigmatization that surrounds obesity within contemporary American society. What’s more important is that these social stigmas that Americans are faced with every day are not merely surface level jokes bantered about for a cheap laugh. They are often prejudices that permeate every aspect of human life. Whether it …

The Impact Of Deliberative Strategy Dissociates Erp Components Related To Conflict Processing Vs. Reinforcement Learning, Christopher M. Warren, Clay B. Holroyd Apr 2012

The Impact Of Deliberative Strategy Dissociates Erp Components Related To Conflict Processing Vs. Reinforcement Learning, Christopher M. Warren, Clay B. Holroyd

Psychology Faculty Publications

We applied the event-related brain potential (ERP) technique to investigate the involvement of two neuromodulatory systems in learning and decision making: The locus coeruleus–norepinephrine system (NE system) and the mesencephalic dopamine system (DA system). We have previously presented evidence that the N2, a negative deflection in the ERP elicited by task-relevant events that begins approximately 200 ms after onset of the eliciting stimulus and that is sensitive to low-probability events, is a manifestation of cortex-wide noradrenergic modulation recruited to facilitate the processing of unexpected stimuli. Further, we hold that the impact of DA reinforcement learning signals on the anterior cingulate …
