Are They Really Similar? Satisfaction, Opinion, And Scholarly Activity Of Black Faculty By Citizenship Status, Patricia Boyer, Lorna Holtman

Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works

Faculty workload is an important higher education issue because of its increasing demands on faculty time, mandates by institutional and external factors, and its relationship to job satisfaction. Specifically, how faculty perceive their workload can positively or negatively influence their job satisfaction. Current literature regarding faculty and workload has focused largely on workload models. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the workload of Black faculty members by citizenship status (U.S. citizens; citizens, foreign born; and non-citizens) based on satisfaction, opinion, and scholarly activity variables. Overall, the findings revealed that foreign born and non-citizens were similar in many of …

The Impact Of A Group-Based Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Intervention On Parents Of Children Diagnosed With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennifer D. Kowalkowski

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Parents of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder face significant stressors and challenges; however, little research has investigated ways to effectively address their psychological distress and adjustment issues. This study used a between-subject and withinsubject repeated measures design to test the effects of an 8-week Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) or treatment as usual (TAU) group. Treatment completers included 13 mothers in the ACT condition and 4 mothers in TAU. They were assessed three weeks before the intervention, one week after, and three months post-intervention. Limited data for between-group comparison demonstrated only a significant difference on the frequency scale …

New Fiscal Federalism, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jun 2012

New Fiscal Federalism, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The 7th NFC award and the 18th amendment to the constitution have brought about a fundamental structural change in the fiscal affairs of Pakistan. The federal government is no longer the main driver of fiscal policy. Power and resources have shifted, rightly so, to the provinces. The share of the federal government in the net proceeds of the divisible pool has come down to 42.5 percent while that of the provinces has gone up to 57.5 percent. Adding straight transfers, grants/ subventions and development loans to the provinces pushes this share further up.

Straussian Grounded-Theory Method: An Illustration, Mai Thi Thanh Thai, Li Choy Chong, Narendra M. Agrawal

The Qualitative Report

This paper demonstrates the benefits and application of Straussian Grounded Theory method in conducting research in complex settings where parameters are poorly defined. It provides a detailed illustration on how this method can be used to build an internationalization theory. To be specific, this paper exposes readers to the behind-the-scene work to develop a theory on the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises based in transition economies. It describes each step from sampling to coding and then to theory formation, explaining the rationale each step of the way. The readers can therefore see how a theory took shape and develop …

Big Data Studio For Big Data Literacy, Mark Bieraugel Jun 2012

Big Data Studio For Big Data Literacy, Mark Bieraugel

Library Scholarship

Science graduates from many disciplines will be required to work with and analyze massive data sets. These large data sets, called “Big Data,” cannot be handled by conventional database hardware and software, but need special software and analytics tuned to work with the volume of data, the velocity in which it steams, and the variety of unstructured data which needs to be analyzed. Students need a place to work with big data prior to graduating, and the hands-on use of big data will make them better prepared for the world of work.

The “Big Data Studio” is a place to …

What Makes Hotel Expatriates Remain In Their Overseas Assignments: A Grounded Theory Study, Zoe Ju-Yu Ho

The Qualitative Report

In this study the researcher uses a qualitative research design to discover what makes hotel expatriates remain in their overseas assignments. In-depth interviews, participant observations, and personal documents are used as data collection methods. Four hotel expatriates are recruited as participants of the study. The collected interview transcripts and fieldnotes are further analyzed through the use of grounded theory. Five selective codes found as the dominant themes in this study are hotel expatriates’ : (a) personality characteristics, (b) motivations to work overseas, (c) challenges derived from overseas assignments, (d) competencies, and (e) roles/identities in overseas assignments. These five main themes …

Deconstructing Children's Expectations For Psychotherapy: Understanding How Parents Prepare Their Children For Mental Health Treatment, Heather Nix Jun 2012

Deconstructing Children's Expectations For Psychotherapy: Understanding How Parents Prepare Their Children For Mental Health Treatment, Heather Nix

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Little research has investigated the effects of stigma on child psychotherapy. Because parents are a primary factor in determining whether children receive psychotherapy and how therapy progresses, understanding how parental perceptions of psychopathology and psychotherapy are associated with children’s mental health treatment seems to be an important step in investigating how stigma impacts child psychotherapy. Researchers have not closely examined, however, how parents might influence children’s experiences of psychotherapy. To address this topic, the current study examined how parents’ views of psychotherapy were related to how they prepared their children for psychotherapy and how this preparation was related to children’s …

An Analysis Of The Employment Effects Of The Washington High Technology Business And Occupation (B&O) Tax Credit: Technical Report, Timothy J. Bartik, Kevin Hollenbeck Jun 2012

An Analysis Of The Employment Effects Of The Washington High Technology Business And Occupation (B&O) Tax Credit: Technical Report, Timothy J. Bartik, Kevin Hollenbeck

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper estimates the effects of an R&D tax credit in the state of Washington on job creation. The research uses micro-data on the job creation and tax credits received by individual firms in the state of Washington from 2004 to 2009. We correct for the endogeneity of R&D tax credits received by individual firms by using instrumental variables based in part on national industry factor shares for R&D. We estimate that this tax credit created jobs, but at a high cost. The cost per job-year created is estimated to be between $40,000 and $50,000. The credit was so high …

Collection Of Online Learning Objects For Research Success (Colors) Pilot Project, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand

University Libraries Publications

The availability of library-related videos is growing; yet it is difficult to justify the impact of such time-consuming projects. In order to investigate the impact of such projects and a possible solution, the researchers asked students to create videos that appeal to their peers. The following research questions were posed:

  • Will creation of media projects enable students to learn core research concepts and skills?
  • Will a series of peer-created media engage students and help them acclimate to researching in an academic library?

By asking students to create videos, the researchers were able to observe how users interact with and perceive …

Foursquare For Libraries: Your Users Are Ready To Check In!, Katy Kelly Jun 2012

Foursquare For Libraries: Your Users Are Ready To Check In!, Katy Kelly

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Libraries can use Foursquare to reward frequent visitors. Using mobile phones to check in, visitors use Foursquare to share their locations with friends as well as unlock special offers available at a location. Frequent visitors can become "mayors," thanks to algorithms, and locations can reward their mayors as they see fit. Our student government association suggested a semester-long contest for the chance to win a highly-coveted individual study room in the library during finals week. The library answered this request and hosted the contest with Foursquare. After launching the "V.I.P. Room" deal, check-ins at the library on Foursquare increased 992%. …

Tracking Tweets: Engage In Conversation About Your Library On Twitter, Katy Kelly

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Get an uncensored look at what people are saying about your library and provide responsive service using Twitter. For two years, tweets about and to a library Twitter account have been responded to, saved, and analyzed, revealing attitudes towards the library that were previously unknown. Once the library Twitter account began responding to tweets, the tweets about the library increased as did the number of the account followers (up 500%). By the third semester of an active and responsive Twitter presence, a student journalist named the library Twitter account a "campus legend." This poster session will showcase Twitter as a …

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This weekend marks the fortieth anniversary of the passage of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 whose section, Title IX, transformed sport in America. After forty years the achievements of Title IX are impressive, while some controversy persists and some misinformation continues to persist. In the past decade the conservative political attack has subsided and Title IX seems to have been removed from those still fighting the culture wars particularly on the issue of feminism.
