Purdue Libraries Publishing Services: The Domino Effect Of Repository-Based Publishing, Outreach, And Promotion, David A. Scherer Jr

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Technical reports have always posed problems for libraries and librarians. They are often bibliographically inconsistent, difficult to source, and published to varying standards of quality. In some fields, these reports are also large in number and central in importance. In many cases, technical reports are just one of many collections that are tied to a particular research center or group. These research centers or groups may also produce data papers, hosted conference proceedings, and other report series, which may also suffer from many of the same issues facing technical reports. In several situations these research centers and groups are unaware …

Blogging the Library

I guess I assumed the most work was always put in BEFORE an exhibit went up (planning, researching, etc.), but I’ve realized now that it takes the same amount of time and effort to make an exhibit look good for the public as it does to plan it. Maybe it’s because I’m both an artist and a perfectionist, but it took me at least a good hour on each exhibit before I was satisfied with the results. [excerpt]

English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the thirty-two years since the Islamic Revolution occurred in Iran, economic and cultural globalization have affected the role of English in multiple domains in the country. Within the domain of advertising, shifts have occurred throughout the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persian scholars have attributed the source of these shifts to tension between local and global identities and to shifts in government advertising policy. This paper explores a data set of 335 advertisements taken from magazines from the period 2006–2008. We contrast borrowings and language display and explore language use in the six parts of the advertisements. …

Returning To Post-Katrina New Orleans: Exploring The Processes, Barriers, And Decision-Making Of African Americans, Kim Mosby Aug 2012

Returning To Post-Katrina New Orleans: Exploring The Processes, Barriers, And Decision-Making Of African Americans, Kim Mosby

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative case study explores the post-Katrina experiences of African Americans in Houston and in New Orleans. When the levees failed, residents from New Orleans were scattered across the country. Houston housed the largest population of displaced low-income African Americans from New Orleans. As the rebuilding process began, housing, employment, education, and healthcare policies in New Orleans changed. These institutional changes employed urban revitalization and poverty removal strategies adapted to disaster recovery. This study differs from previous research by examining these changes with an intersectional approach. It explores how African Americans frame obstacles as they attempt to return to a …

Statehouse Mosaics And The American Electorate: How State Legislatures Affect Political Participation, Robynn Kuhlmann

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Comparatively few studies have explored how variations in state governing institutions influence voting behavior. Utilizing lower chamber state legislative election returns from the years 2000 through 2010, and the 2002 through 2010 GSS data series, this dissertation focuses on how US state legislatures influence voting behavior and political attitudes of the American electorate. Specifically, this research takes on a comparative approach and illustrates how institutional differences in the size, capacity, and composition of the US state legislatures affect the electorates’ propensity to vote and how politically efficacious people feel.

Working Towards The Sustainability Of New Orleans’ African American Indigenous Cultural Traditions, Ethan K. Ellestad Aug 2012

Working Towards The Sustainability Of New Orleans’ African American Indigenous Cultural Traditions, Ethan K. Ellestad

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

New Orleans indigenous cultural traditions such as Mardi Gras Indians, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs and second line parades were born out of the disenfranchisement of the African American community. Though the practices have existed for over a century and provide social benefits, they have faced hostility from the police department, indifference from elected officials and city planners, as well as economic exploitation, denying them the ability to thrive. With a restructuring of public policy and outside assistance, these cultural traditions will be able to help revitalize the economically depressed areas where they continue to be practiced.

The Role Of Community Land Trusts In Preserving And Creating Commercial Assets: A Dual Cae Study Of Rondo Clt In St. Paul, Minnesota And Crescent City Clt In New Orleans, Louisiana, Elizabeth Sorce

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As the community land trust (CLT) movement in the United States approaches its 50th anniversary, CLT members, practitioners and researchers are exploring and pushing the boundaries of the model. CLTs offer an alternative model of land use tenure that permanently removes properties from the speculative market for the ongoing common good of the community. Most frequently associated with the provision of affordable housing in strong real estate markets, several CLTs across the country are now expanding into the commercial realm. This thesis compares the incipient commercial development efforts underway in St. Paul, Minnesota and New Orleans, Louisiana in order …

Transforming Sustainability Thru Adaptive Co-Management: A Critique Of Louisiana’S Coastal Master Plan, Melanie G. Sand Aug 2012

Transforming Sustainability Thru Adaptive Co-Management: A Critique Of Louisiana’S Coastal Master Plan, Melanie G. Sand

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To achieve true sustainability, planners must balance the interests of environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. In a critically changing, complex ecosystem such as Louisiana’s coast, challenges to achieve the perfect equilibrium are further compounded. Following the logic of emerging adaptive co-management literature, the planning framework for Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan could be transformed into a more collaborative, democratic process. Adaptive co-management is a regime which provides power to local citizens, often in possession of invaluable traditional ecological knowledge. In general, it focuses on constant learning and collaboration. Through power-sharing and participatory action, we embrace science, but step back …

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane Aug 2012

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane

Master's Theses - Economics

Ethnic diversity’s effects on factors of economic development have been studied widely in recent years. I expand upon this research by directly studying ethnic diversity’s effects on the poverty rates within the counties of Illinois, using a dynamic panel technique devised by Blundell and Bond (1998). My results are consistent with the noted effects in previous literature, and provide extra weight towards measures of fractionalization and polarization. I conclude with policy implications and limitations which require future research.

The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick Aug 2012

The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick

Theses and Dissertations

Developing reading fluency in a first language (L1) is a topic that has received a considerable amount of attention. Developing reading fluency in a second language (L2), however, has received relatively little attention (Grabe, 2009). Anderson (2008) defines reading fluency as "reading at an appropriate rate with adequate comprehension." For adult ESL learners, Anderson suggests a minimum rate of 200 wpm with at least 70% comprehension. Previous studies that have been conducted on L2 reading fluency focus primarily on reading rate development. This study seeks to combine rate development and comprehension development to effectively foster L2 reading fluency. Doing so …

This research identified the need to study the introduction of FPY as research into this topic to date has been limited. The purpose of this research was to understand the rationale behind this new initiative as well as exploring the issues of 'qualification requirements', …
