Engaged Or Just "Friends": Using Social Media For Membership Engagement Or Identity Management Through Group Affiliations, Emel Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study investigation was to ascertain the engagement levels of emerging-aged adults that affiliate and hold membership in groups both on and offline. In-person and online participation levels were examined, and motives for online activity on groups' social media pages were investigated to understand how profile identity formation played a role in emerging-aged adults' associations. Information acquired through this study assists in further examining Facebook and Twitter's influence on social capital production within groups. Group members demonstrated a preference for email and in-person communication over social networking sites, higher levels of offline engagement versus online, and an …

Neighborhood Inclusion And Quality In Richmond, Va: An Empirical Review Of Neighborhoods In The Richmond Region Based On Factors Of Racial And Economic Inclusion And Quality Of Life., Samuel Tuttle

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an empirical review of neighborhoods in the Richmond Region based on factors of inclusion and quality of life. The research attempts to answer the question of whether or not healthy and inclusive neighborhoods exist in the Richmond Region, and if they do what factors they hold in common. Inclusion and quality of life are identified using census data, school assessment reports, HUD reports, and cause-of-death data applied at the neighborhood level (census tract). This data is used to identify neighborhoods within the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) that have a high quality of life and include racial …

The City Of Man, European Émigrés, And The Genesis Of Postwar Conservative Thought, Adi Gordon, Udi Greenberg Aug 2012

The City Of Man, European Émigrés, And The Genesis Of Postwar Conservative Thought, Adi Gordon, Udi Greenberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

This article explores the forgotten manifesto The City of Man: A Declaration on World Democracy, which was composed in 1940 by a group of prominent American and European anti-isolationist intellectuals, including Thomas Mann, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Hermann Broch. Written in response to the victories of Nazi Germany, the manifesto declared that the United States had a new global responsibility not only to lead the war against fascism and Marxism, but also to establish a global order of peace and democracy under U.S. hegemony. Moreover, the authors of the manifesto claimed that such an order would have to be based on …

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson Aug 2012

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson

The Qualitative Report

From the beginnings of qualitative research in the late 19th century to today, researchers have struggled to make sense of the notion of self or subjectivity; in other words, the I in the research. We ask ourselves: Who is the researcher? How is their notion of self present during research? How is research a site for contested notions of self? Who is the I in qualitative research?

Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland Aug 2012

Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to examine the complexities of recruiting overweight and obese adolescent boys for qualitative research, discuss specific recruitment considerations for this population, and offer guidance to researchers interested in recruiting overweight adolescent boys. Three overweight adolescent boys and six community professionals participated in this study. Data collection methods included fieldwork observations (60 hours) and person-centered interviews (N=9). Emergent themes revealed that establishing trust, understanding the sensitivities of discussing obesity, and considering adolescent boys’ fears of sharing personal information may have enhanced recruitment success. Researchers should consider the importance of building relationships with professionals who can …

Seeking Stability In An Oily World: The Gulf War And American Imperialism, Kate Keleher Aug 2012

Seeking Stability In An Oily World: The Gulf War And American Imperialism, Kate Keleher

The Macalester Review

Oil has profoundly shaped the political, economic, and social structures of the twentieth century and it continues to shape the global order today. As both a source and a medium of power, oil binds together seemingly disparate elements into a highly sensitive web. This paper examines the first Gulf War as a turning point in the narrative of oil and power. The United States’ engagement in the Gulf War reasserted American dominance over the Middle East and ushered in a new era of oil security. In the war’s aftermath, the United States assumed roles that indicate an agenda of new …

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller Aug 2012

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller

The Macalester Review

Mancur Olson's free rider problem suggests that self-interested individuals would be more rational to abstain from rather than participate in collective action. This possibility is particularly problematic for social movement theories attempting to account for movement emergence. In this essay, I critique resource mobilization theory's solution to Olson's problem, arguing that its "elite support hypothesis" cannot account for the emergence of entirely grassroots movements. However, through an analysis of the Bolivian Water War, I ultimately suggest that resource mobilization theory can be salvaged. I claim that a distinction between "vertical" and "horizontal" organizations allows resource mobilization theory to maintain its …

Does The Equity Market Affect Economic Growth?, Kwame D. Fynn Aug 2012

Does The Equity Market Affect Economic Growth?, Kwame D. Fynn

The Macalester Review

This paper examines the impact of the stock market primarily on economic growth using panel data from 1990-2010. I apply Generalized Least Squares techniques for fixed effects with the exclusion of the subgroup 2005-2010 which uses random effects. The effect of the stock market on growth is based on country-specific effects and varies in different time periods.

Blogging the Library

My summer internship experience at the library is officially done. It’s odd to think about just how much I’ve accomplished this summer—I’ve researched Civil War genre painters, learned about nineteenth-century sheet music, installed frames, arranged Union soldiers’ swords—the list goes on. I truly am fortunate to have had such a unique and stimulating experience this summer. [excerpt]

The Longitudinal Stability Of Memory In Males With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alexander J. Cramond Aug 2012

The Longitudinal Stability Of Memory In Males With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alexander J. Cramond

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated mixed evidence on impaired memory functioning in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with the only consensus that there appears to be much heterogeneity. In addition, no research to date has examined the stability of memory in ASD. This study examined the stability of memory function in ASD compared to typically developing age-matched controls. Participants were administered the Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL) twice, three years apart, in an established longitudinal NIH-supported investigation of ASD. Based on available research contrasting memory development in healthy individuals versus those with ASD, it was hypothesized that memory performance in the …

The Domino Effect Of Repository-Based Publishing, Outreach, And Promotion, David Scherer Aug 2012

The Domino Effect Of Repository-Based Publishing, Outreach, And Promotion, David Scherer

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Technical reports have always posed problems for libraries and librarians. They are often bibliographically inconsistent, difficult to source, and published to varying standards of quality. In some fields, these reports are also large in number and central in importance. In many cases, technical reports are just one of many collections that are tied to a particular research center or group. These research centers or groups may also produce data papers, hosted conference proceedings, and other report series, which may also suffer from many of the same issues facing technical reports. In several situations these research centers and groups are unaware …

Open Education Resources: Collecting, Promoting, And Managing Oer In An Institutional Repository, Sarah Beaubien

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Open Education Resources (OER) are digital materials used for educational purposes that are intentionally made available to the public. An increasing number of university faculty create and use such resources in their teaching. Partnering with the creators of OER is an excellent way to gather high-quality, unique content for the repository while helping to fulfill the goal of making OER widely available. This session will introduce considerations regarding the value and process of building an OER collection in the repository.

Kickstart, A Targeted Assessment, Discovery, And Population Of Selected Departments On Campus, Barbara Strauss

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Through the generous support of Provost Geoffrey Mearns, the Kickstart service was purchased for Cleveland State University’s implementation of Digital Commons, EngagedScholarship@CSU. This outstanding service provided two types of resources to help our repository get off to a quick start. Since our training in early March 2012, we have already entered 1,191 documents and 94 associated SelectedWorks pages. We initially identified 10 departments/units on campus that produced abundant scholarly works. These departments and faculty were targeted for a scan for works in the Web of Knowledge. When results were revealed, we narrowed the field to four units. The works …

Using Open Access: Increasing Digital Commons Use In Academic Libraries, Craighton T. Hippenhammer

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Here are three points for discussion. First, how can we become open access advocates? Second, would connecting open access behavior with copyright behavior increase awareness of open access and choosing open access options? And third, how can we strive towards more open OA options?

Identifying And Adding Institutional Repository Content From And For Your Institution’S Affinity Groups, Jon Bull Aug 2012

Identifying And Adding Institutional Repository Content From And For Your Institution’S Affinity Groups, Jon Bull

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

No repository is successful without content to disseminate. We will discuss how IR administrators can go about targeting certain constituencies on their campus with content to share, such as working with subject liaisons in the library to outreach to departments on campus and targeting new incoming faculty and faculty with a research-specific need of the IR, such as a data management plan. We will also consider the impact capstone and research projects from the student body could have on your IR, as well as how to target campus publications struggling to transition to electronic format or faculty who wish to …

The way I have unified the LGBTQ titles—all 700-odd of them—is by using a local information field in the catalog. Quick cataloging lesson for you non-librarians: when I talk about subject headings, for example Gay Culture, those go in a field designated by the number 650. This means that it’s a universal, standardized field and that the headings in those fields will be recognized anywhere. For local subject headings, those that are only used within one library (ours, in this case), the field is designated by the number 690. I’m using one of those 690 fields with the heading “LGBTQ …

We will introduce these theories and focus our discussions on sharing best practices for managing repository workflows and staffing.

Bias Crime And Minority Threat, Michele Stacey Aug 2012

Bias Crime And Minority Threat, Michele Stacey

Dissertations

Beginning in the 1980s, the term hate crime became part of the research canon of criminologists across the United States. Researchers have examined the characteristics of hate crime victims, offenders, and offenses. However, little is known about the context of hate crime, and more specifically about the ways that the changing demographics of the United States have contributed to hate crime. The dissertation examines the relationship between these demographic shifts and the trend in hate crime from 2000 to 2007 through the use of population averaged panel models. These models assess changes over time and across place in the number …
