From Avatar To Liyarn Ngarn: Utilising Film As A Device In Anti-Racism Education, Dawn Darlaston-Jones Jan 2011

From Avatar To Liyarn Ngarn: Utilising Film As A Device In Anti-Racism Education, Dawn Darlaston-Jones

Sciences Conference Papers

Teaching within an anti-racism framework presents many obstacles to even the most skilled educator. Overcoming resistance from students and helping them to deal with the emotional consequences associated with such content as well as the journey of understanding (for both student and educator) can be difficult. Often it is the anxiety associated with managing these responses and reactions from students as well as their own lack of knowledge and skill that inhibits educators from attempting to teach such content. In this presentation, I will discuss the development of a second year unit, Culture & Society, including the theoretical foundations …

The Prevalence And Practices Of Academic Library Journal Clubs, Luke Vilelle Jan 2011

The Prevalence And Practices Of Academic Library Journal Clubs, Luke Vilelle

WRL Faculty Scholarship

An increasing number of references to journal clubs in library literature, and the recent creation of clubs at the authors’ institutions, sparked curiosity about how widespread journal clubs are in academic libraries. An online survey announced on library listservs assessed their prevalence and practices. Library journal clubs seem to be a relatively recent phenomenon, and are more widespread than previously thought, though not pervasive. Library journal clubs promote current awareness, analysis skills, group cohesion, and intra-library knowledge, and offer a low-cost professional development opportunity in times of budget difficulties. Practices that sustain journal clubs can maintain these benefits.

The Cold War's Last Battlefield: Reagan, The Soviets And Central America, Edward A. Lynch Jan 2011

The Cold War's Last Battlefield: Reagan, The Soviets And Central America, Edward A. Lynch

Books by Hollins Faculty and Staff

"Central America was the final place where U.S. and Soviet proxy forces faced off against one another in armed conflict. In The Cold War's Last Battlefield, Edward A. Lynch blends his own first-hand experiences as a member of the Reagan Central America policy team with interviews of policy makers and exhaustive study of primary source materials, including once-secret government documents, in order to recount these largely forgotten events and how they fit within Reagan's broader foreign policy goals. Lynch's compelling narrative reveals a president who was willing to risk both influence and image to aggressively confront Soviet expansion in …

Qatar And The 2022 Fifa World Cup: Kick-Starting A Global Economy, Brian Johnson Jan 2011

Qatar And The 2022 Fifa World Cup: Kick-Starting A Global Economy, Brian Johnson

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: December 2, 2010 was my father’s fifty-fifth birthday. He and I were expecting the greatest present that would be given to the United States in a long time. The 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding was that day, and we were giddy waiting for it to be awarded to the United States. We were planning on going together in twelve years, to the games because we love soccer and the United States men’s national team. We have watched every televised game that they have played for years now and were still excited from the previous World Cup. And now, …

Application Of Protection Motivation Theory To Study The Factors That Influence Disaster Recovery Planning: An Empirical Investigation, Shalini Wunnava Jan 2011

Application Of Protection Motivation Theory To Study The Factors That Influence Disaster Recovery Planning: An Empirical Investigation, Shalini Wunnava

Doctoral Dissertations

In today's information intensive and networked world, Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) is a critical and significant activity. However, DRP does not always receive the attention it deserves. Therefore, it is critical to examine the factors that influence the undertaking of disaster recovery planning. A model on disaster recovery planning was developed using the theoretical lens of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). Drawing from PMT literature and using the information technology disaster recovery planning (ITDRP) construct developed by Shropshire and Kadlec (2009), a research model was developed in which perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, intrinsic rewards, extrinsic rewards, fear, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and …

Coparenting : A Conceptual And Clinical Examination Of Family Systems., James P. Mchale, Kristin M. Lindahl Jan 2011

Coparenting : A Conceptual And Clinical Examination Of Family Systems., James P. Mchale, Kristin M. Lindahl

Faculty Books

The past 15 years have seen the explosive growth of a new field of study that has come to be known as coparenting (McHale & Sullivan, 2008). Since the turn of the new millennium, fresh new insights and thoughtful empirical research studies explicitly guided by coparenting frameworks have made their way into the peer-reviewed literature almost every few months. But what is coparenting, and why is there a need for an entire volume taking stock of such a relatively new field of study? Broadly speaking, coparenting is an enterprise undertaken by two or more adults who together take on the …

Engaging With Environmental Justice: Governance, Education And Citizenship., Bernardo Heisler Motta, Michael Cotton Jan 2011

Engaging With Environmental Justice: Governance, Education And Citizenship., Bernardo Heisler Motta, Michael Cotton

Faculty Books

Engaging with Environmental Justice: Governance, Education and Citizenship presents a range of works about the impact of science, economy, laws, education, practice, and policy on social groups and their surrounding environments. The chapters in this E-book go from the philosophical underpinnings of the causes of environmental injustices to case studies of the empirical work of practitioners who faced first hand the successes and failures of environmental practices and research. As a true inter-disciplinary compilation, this volume shows the links and the gaps between theory and practice and between viewpoints and disciplines. It exposes both the current fragility of the current …

The Birds Of Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt (Polk County, Iowa): Patterns Of Habitat Use And Implications For Management, Keith Summerville, Joel Boyles, Loren Lown

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Despite the fact that many birds are believed to be declining as a result of habitat loss and elimination of historic disturbance regimes, few studies have explored how restoration and management of mixed grassland and woodland systems influence bird communities. In this study, we tested whether habitat size, habitat type, and use of prescribed fire as a management tool affected the species richness and composition of bird communities sampled from 22 restored grassland and woodland sites within Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt (Polk County, Iowa). In 2004-5 bird communities were sampled by walking transects within each site and recording the presence and …

Servant-Leadership And Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Role Of Justice, Job Control, And Burnout, Jari Hakanen, Dirk Van Dierendonck Jan 2011

Servant-Leadership And Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Role Of Justice, Job Control, And Burnout, Jari Hakanen, Dirk Van Dierendonck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

When it comes to identifying and meeting the psychological needs of people in an organization, it is servant-leadership that emphasizes this aspect most, more than any other leadership theory. Servant-leadership theory positions the leader as worker-centered, personal growth-oriented, and focused on providing a sense of purpose. This holistic approach to leadership helps people find an intrinsic satisfaction in their job by emphasizing their sense of work as a calling (Correia de Sousa & Van Dierendonck, 2010). It promotes a sense of community, empowerment, and autonomy. It is, therefore, to be expected that the influence of servant-leadership extends beyond the direct …

Vipassana Meditation: The Path To Better Servant-Leadership, Antoinette Naranjo Jan 2011

Vipassana Meditation: The Path To Better Servant-Leadership, Antoinette Naranjo

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Awareness is not a giver of solace-it is just the opposite. It is a disturber and an awakener. Able leaders are usually sharply awake and reasonably disturbed. They are not seekers after solace. They have their own inner serenity.

-Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant Leadership

We’re doing better than the nation, but seem to be stuck in neutral. The port, regional tourism and residential housing have yet to regain the ground they lost during the recession and the outlook for defense spending is uncertain.
