Medial Prefrontal Modulation Of The Nucleus Basalis Magnocellularis During Attention-Dependent Learning, Venuz Yadira Greenfield Jan 2011

Medial Prefrontal Modulation Of The Nucleus Basalis Magnocellularis During Attention-Dependent Learning, Venuz Yadira Greenfield

Theses Digitization Project

The nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) sends cholinergic projections to the neocortex. While NBM activation of the neocortex regulates attention and contributes to memory formation, the mechanisms controlling NBM activity during attention-dependent learning are not well understood. The current experiment tested the hypothesis that the mPFC is critically involved in modulating NBM activity during attention-dependent learning in rats. A total of 80 male Long-Evans rats were purchased from a commerical research animal vendor. Rats were randomly assigned to one of four controlled groups. The procedures were done by an animal technician and veterinarian in the CSUSB Social and Behavioral Science vivarium …

Monitoring Gendered Outcomes Of Environmental And Development Policies, Bipasha Baruah Jan 2011

Monitoring Gendered Outcomes Of Environmental And Development Policies, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Environmental and development policies used to be considered gender-neutral. Women’s needs and interests were perceived to be identical to those of men. Empirical research has more recently asserted that policies that were thought to be gender-neutral were actually genderblind and, therefore, either inadequate or inappropriate to capture the impacts upon women of environmental and development policies. This article presents a range of practical tools and mechanisms that may be used to monitor environmental and development issues from a gender perspective. It also outlines key strategies through which governments, NGOs, and donor agencies may assess the impact of such policies on …

Idk Lol: Text Messaging During Class Impairs Comprehension Of Lecture Material, Amanda C. Gingerich

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

After leading a PIE at NITOP 2010 on text messaging during class, I incorporated a new demonstration into my Cognitive Processes course. In this exercise, students either text message each other during lecture or they listen to the lecture without the distraction of text messaging. Everyone then takes a quiz on the material. Results suggest that text message during lecture leads to impaired comprehension of material.

Is Beauty Only Skin Deep?, Amber Fetsch Jan 2011

Is Beauty Only Skin Deep?, Amber Fetsch

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study was done to determine if a person’s idea of attractiveness is based on more than just looks. This could be beneficial to know when meeting people and having a better understanding of why you surround yourself with the people you do. Twenty-four undergraduate students were recruited to rate models on a scale of attractiveness in a packet. There were 12 variations of the packets. Six of the packets just showed pictures of three men and three women. The other six packets showed the same pictures but also included income and job information. The ratings of the attractiveness of …

The Library Student Liaison Program At Eastern Washington University: A Model For Student Engagement, Julie Miller Jan 2011

The Library Student Liaison Program At Eastern Washington University: A Model For Student Engagement, Julie Miller

Scholarship and Professional Work

Teach students to love the library.

-John N. Gardner, Executive Director of the Policy Center on the First Year of College, told to academic librarians at the 2003 Association of College and Research Libraries conference.

The unspoken conclusion in Gardner's challenge to academic librarians to "teach students to love the library" is or become irrelevant. Recent research shows the importance of student engagement, particularly in the first year of college, to student success and retention in higher education.

Even in the midst of continuing difficult economic times, 2010 national statistics showed no increase in child maltreatment. Overall substantiated child maltreatment actually declined 1% from 2009 to 2010, including a 3% decline in sexual abuse and a 2% decline in physical abuse. Child maltreatment fatalities also declined 8%, but some known administrative changes af‐ fected the rates.

It's Ten O'Clock: Do We Know Where Our Students Are?, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Leena Joseph, Maike Philipsen, Joan Rhodes, Diane Stout-Brown, Danielle Terrell, Franklin Wallace

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

Do we know where our students are will ensure that Virginia Commonwealth University has the ability to identify the current residential location of students at any time such contact is warranted, for instance during an emergency. We propose a system that secures at regular intervals up-to-date contact information. Conceptually, the project is designed to help VCU better serve its students, promote a safer environment, raise student awareness of how crucial it is to provide the university with up-to-date contact information, and ultimately improve the relationship between the institution and its neighboring communities.

Supermax Confinement: A Descriptive And Theoretical Inquiry, Marisa M. Baumgardner Jan 2011

Supermax Confinement: A Descriptive And Theoretical Inquiry, Marisa M. Baumgardner

Online Theses and Dissertations

In the past few decades, there has been a proliferation of supermax prisons and units across the nation, reflecting the increased use of administrative, isolated segregation. This proliferation is embedded within a broader shift in society towards more punitive measures of disciplining those people convicted of criminal offenses. The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine the proliferation of supermax confinement as a major component of the punitive shift. This is done primarily through the application of contemporary literature that focuses on the sociology of punishment theory. Another purpose of this thesis was to examine and describe the history …

Reversing Ethiopia's Intellectual Capital Flight, Asayehgn Desta Jan 2011

Reversing Ethiopia's Intellectual Capital Flight, Asayehgn Desta

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Recently, the Ethiopian Government drafted a five year plan (2010 to 2015) to achieve the country’s economic growth. When Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation plan was analyzed in light of the new growth theory and traced historically in terms of the push and pull factors that contributed to the flight of skilled Ethiopians to more advanced countries, it was found that over the years Ethiopia has funded the education of its nationals only to see them contributing to the growth of developed countries. Being stripped of skilled human capital, leaving it ill prepared to face globalization and survive in the new …

Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller Jan 2011

Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Sexual offender legislation has been based on “moral panics” stemming from sensationalized cases (i.e. Wetterling, Kanka, and Klaas). The variety of sex offenders that are treated with blanket punishment is causing collateral consequences which actually create more risk to the public. By comparing the Idaho Sexual Offender Registry with the Idaho Department of Justice Database, this study determined what offenses were being committed after placement on the registry. My research identifies a collateral consequence of unsafe driving conditions. It found that there was a 113% increase of moving traffic related charges and 94% increase of non-moving violations such as driving …

This study builds on knowledge of the interactions of teacher expectations, self-concept and academic achievement. Participants were Psychology students (N =21) fourteen female, and seven male. Their age ranged from eighteen years old to forty-six years old. This was a matched paired, repeated measures design. Participants were given academic tests then matched into two equal groups. The treatment group was told they did exceptionally well, and that they were expected to do well again. The control group was not told anything about their previous performance or what was expected of them. Both groups were given similar tests as before. We …

Family Labor Participation And Child Care Decisions: The Role Of Grannies, Gema Zamarro Jan 2011

Family Labor Participation And Child Care Decisions: The Role Of Grannies, Gema Zamarro

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

One of the most significant long term trends in the labor market in most OECD countries has been the increase in the proportion of working mothers. However, not all countries show the same pattern. Countries in Southern Europe (Italy, Greece and Spain) show an average participation rate of about 45% whereas the participation rates in Northern countries (Denmark, Sweden) are around 75%. The characteristics of child care systems also differ significantly across OECD countries. This along with the characteristics of the labor market may have led families to get the necessary social services in an alternative way, i.e. through grandmothers. …

Diamonds In The Rubble: The Women Of Haiti—Institutions, Gender Equity, And Human Development In Haiti, Tonia Warnecke, Andrew Padgett

Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Publications

Although Haiti's 2010 earthquake brought to light the inconceivable poverty existing in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti's struggle for economic development long pre-dated that earthquake. One problem in Haiti is the high level of gender inequity, and we argue that human development theory is the best mode for change. We provide a brief background of Haiti's economic development over the last several decades, along with the status of women's rights and gender-differentiated socioeconomic outcomes. We analyze the ways that policy neglect of gender equity in Haiti has contributed to failed economic development in the past. Finally, we identify ways that other …

Quantitative Vs. Qualitative - Do Different Research Methods Give Us Consistent Information About Our Users And Their Library Space Needs?, Susan Montgomery Jan 2011

Quantitative Vs. Qualitative - Do Different Research Methods Give Us Consistent Information About Our Users And Their Library Space Needs?, Susan Montgomery

Faculty Publications

Assessment of how library patrons use space and the evaluation of their needs has become a “hot” topic in library research. But determining the best way to obtain information about their activity can be a challenge. Two types of data collection are quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data provides a numerical count of what activities students perform within the library and therefore can be measured. Qualitative data gives personal opinions, feedback and individual perspectives regarding a topic but is not measurable. In this study, we were interested to learn if we would get substantially different results from a user observation study, …

Jealousy And Infidelity Among Mexican Couples, Sofia Rivera-‐Aragon, Rolando Diaz-‐Loving, Pedro Wolfgang Velasco-‐Matus, Nancy Montero-‐Santamaria Jan 2011

Jealousy And Infidelity Among Mexican Couples, Sofia Rivera-‐Aragon, Rolando Diaz-‐Loving, Pedro Wolfgang Velasco-‐Matus, Nancy Montero-‐Santamaria

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Gender differences in jealously have been traced back to both socio-cultural, as well as to evolutionary sources. The evolutionary approach predicts similar gender differences to be found in all cultures. Socio-cultural explanations, however, suggest that the patterns of gender differences may be culture-specific. The current study investigated gender differences in the relations between jealousy and infidelity in Mexico. 537 participants (248 men; 289 women) filled out an inventory of jealousy and infidelity, respectively. The results show first a positive relationship among infidelity, anger, fear, suspicion, frustration and distrust. Second, the data reveal a clear gender difference in that men desired …
