The Welfare Cost Of Inflation In Oecd Countries, P. Boel, Gabriele Camera
The Welfare Cost Of Inflation In Oecd Countries, P. Boel, Gabriele Camera
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
The welfare cost of anticipated inflation is quantified in a matching model of money calibrated to twenty-three different OECD countries for several sample periods. In most economies, given the common period 1978-1998, a representative agent would give up only a fraction of 1% of consumption to avoid 10% inflation. The welfare cost of inflation varies across countries, from a fraction of 0.1% in Japan, to more than 2% in Australia, reaching 6% with bargaining. The model fits poorly money demand data of several countries, however. The fit generally improves with longer sample periods. The results are fairly robust to variations …
Societal Integration And Radical Islam Among Muslim Immigrants In Europe And The United States, Ghada Wahdan
Societal Integration And Radical Islam Among Muslim Immigrants In Europe And The United States, Ghada Wahdan
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Little research has been done using Social Disorganization Theory to explain the radicalization of Muslim immigrants in Europe and the United States. The author's intention is to offer a concise and clear comparison between the relationship of societal integration and radical Islam among Muslims living in Europe and the United States. The research modeled the application of Social Disorganization Theory which is seated in the idea that social disorder in communities creates disagreements in fundamental values, norms with behavioral irregularity and deviance. Radicalization of Muslim immigrants living in non-Muslim countries exists when there is a low degree of internal bonding …

Positively Versus Negatively Charged Moral Emotion Expectancies In Adolescence: The Role Of Situational Context And The Developing Moral Self, Tobias Krettenauer, Megan Johnston
Psychology Faculty Publications
The study analyses adolescents' positively charged versus negatively charged moral emotion expectancies. Two hundred and five students (M = 14.83 years, SD = 2.21) participated in an interview depicting various situations in which a moral norm was either regarded or transgressed. Emotion expectancies were assessed for specific emotions (pride, guilt) as well as for overall strength and valence. In addition, self-importance of moral values was measured by a questionnaire. Results revealed that positively charged emotion expectancies were more pronounced in contexts of prosocial action than in the context of moral transgressions, whereas the opposite was true for negatively charged …
Archival Study: How The Architecture Of A Room Can Influence A Person’S Mood, Jordan Mckay
Archival Study: How The Architecture Of A Room Can Influence A Person’S Mood, Jordan Mckay
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
I conducted this meta-analysis of published studies examining how architectural designs can affect a person’s mood, as it pertains to colors of and the overall arrangement of the room. There are many factors that influence one’s mood; however, there is evidence showing that color can affect the way a person feels. Not only can color be a factor but the design of the room, whether it is a small confined space or a wide-open space, can have significant implications on a person’s mood and creativity. Many interior designers and architects consider these factors when designing a room and or space. …

Developing A Measure Of Virtual Community Citizenship Behavior, Luman Yong, Daniel Sachau, Andrea L. Lassiter
Developing A Measure Of Virtual Community Citizenship Behavior, Luman Yong, Daniel Sachau, Andrea L. Lassiter
Psychology Department Publications
This study examines the kinds of behaviors that constitute virtual community citizenship behaviors (VCCB) and tests three factors that may influence community members’ willingness to engage in VCCB. More specifically, the authors propose a multi-dimensional VCCB construct (altruism, civic virtue, consciousness, courtesy, and sportsmanship) and three antecedents of VCCB (affective commitment, structural embeddedness and membership tenure). Four dimensions including altruism, civic virtue, courtesy and loyalty emerged as a result of behavioral examples collection from SMEs using critical incident technique and a VCCB survey with 19 Likert type items reflecting the behavioral examples within each dimension was created. Data was collected …

Technology And Independent Practice: Survey Findings And Implications, Mark R. Mcminn, Jennifer Lynn Bearse, Laura K. Heyne, Amanda Smithberger, Andrea Lanier Erb
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Today’s rapid rate of technology change introduces both opportunities and challenges for psychologists. A Technology and Practice Questionnaire was sent to 1000 psychologists in independent practice, half of whom were contacted by e-mail and the other half by U.S. mail. A total of 237 of the 433 deliverable surveys sent by U.S. mail were returned (54.7% response rate), but only 49 of the 458 deliverable surveys sent by e-mail (12.9% response rate). Respondents were asked to rate the frequency of 51 behaviors in their practice and to indicate whether the behavior is ethical. The results suggest a relatively low rate …

Resolving Anger Toward God: Lament As An Avenue Toward Attachment, Kimberly N. Snow, Mark R. Mcminn, Rodger K. Bufford, Irv Brendlinger
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Psychologists have mostly overlooked the topic of anger toward God. The current study tested an intervention based on the biblical psalms of lament, a consisting of 20 devotional readings and weekly experiential assignments, delivered electronically over a four-week period. A total of 192 college students at Christian institutions across the United States completed the study, and were randomly assigned to the experimental condition, an attention control condition, or a no-contact condition. The expected findings--that the experimental intervention would cause decreased feelings of anger and complaint toward God, as well as increased intimacy with God over time--were not confirmed. However, those …
Matching Grants, Income Redistribution And Decentralized Leadership, Arthur J. Caplan, C. Emilson, D. Silva
Matching Grants, Income Redistribution And Decentralized Leadership, Arthur J. Caplan, C. Emilson, D. Silva
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
We examine the decentralized provision of an impure public good by regional governments in a federation similar in certain respects to both the European Union and the United States. The central authority redistributes income and provides matching grants on a per rate basis after it observes the regions’ contributions to the impure public good. Imperfectly mobile workers react to regional and central governments’ policies by establishing residence in their most preferred region. Despite imperfect labor mobility, we show that the allocation of the impure public good and the interregional income redistribution policy are generally efficient in a federation with decentralized …

Bangladesh (formally the People's Republic of Bangladesh) is a Muslim-majority parliamentary democracy located in South Asia. Originally called East Pakistan, it was created during the partition of India in 1947 as the eastern wing of the country of Pakistan. Its name was later changed to East Bengal and then to Bangladesh after its union with West Pakistan was broken following a bloody war of secession in 1971. [excerpt]

Predicting Elementary Student Outcomes From Student And Teacher Characteristics, Eunjoo Jung
Falk College Research Center
Structural equation modeling analyses of data from a longitudinal study of elementary students (N=5094) examined the relationships and pathways among individual characteristics of students and teachers at the beginning of 3rd grade to student achievement at the end of 3rd and 5th grade. The proposed model for predicting student outcomes provided a good fit to the data. The results demonstrated that the level of 3rd grade students’ learning motivation and social skills and teachers’ positive attitude at the beginning of school year were significant predictors of student academic achievement at the end of 3rd grade. Students’ perceived competence and their …

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department
The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between intelligence (IQ) and self-efficacy in children and adolescents living in the United States and Nicaragua. The sample consisted of 90 (46 male, 44 female) students (mean age = 11.57 years, SD = 3.0 years) referred by school administrators and faculty. United States (US) participants (n = 27) resided in rural counties in the Northwest. The other group consisted of 63 students from Central America. A comparison between groups revealed that in the US, sample higher grades and IQ scores are typically associated with higher levels of self-efficacy. However in …
