Nevada 2.0: New Economies for a Sustainable Future
Nevada 2.0: New Economies for a Sustainable Future was held on January 7, 2011, to explore opportunities to diversify Nevada’s economy by examining similar efforts in nearby states. It included presentations by guest speakers from Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, and Dallas, as well as interactive panel discussions with Nevada business and political leaders to hone in on the next steps Nevada should take to move forward on new business expansion. For years, Nevadans have understood the need to diversify the state’s economy beyond tourism, construction, and mining. Yet, Nevada enjoyed an extended boom from simply enlarging its base economy. …

Announcements And Plenary Address – A Dance Of Transparencies: Researching Identity And Identifying Researchers, Ronald J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report Conference
Taking its place alongside such core metaphors as culture, phenomenon, discourse, and narrative, identity has emerged as an important trope in qualitative research. Be it people's sense of themselves as members of a family, culture, corporation, or the world society, qualitative researchers are interested in learning how people come to define themselves within their varied contexts. This area of research is also fraught with controversy as researchers and their research participants struggle with gender, sexual, cultural, brand, product, customer, and corporate identities and the methodological and ethical decisions entailed in studying such phenomena. An associated concern is how do we …

The Need For More Academics In Carbon Market Formation, Elizabeth L. Aldrich
The Need For More Academics In Carbon Market Formation, Elizabeth L. Aldrich
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the wake of climate change negotiations in Cancún, and as New Mexico, California, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia design their own greenhouse gas markets, I am struck by the dearth of North American academics involved in the creation of climate change policy. Those tracking and attempting to influence the design of these markets are not few; they encompass representatives from energy to agricultural industries, industry trade associations like the International Emissions Trading Association, non-governmental organizations such as the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, World Resources Institute, and Stockholm Environment Institute. However, all of these interests have funding sources …

The Relationship Of Social Support To African American Caregivers' Help-Seeking For Emotional Problems, Joseph Pickard, Megumi Inoue, Letha Chadiha, Sharon Johnson
The Relationship Of Social Support To African American Caregivers' Help-Seeking For Emotional Problems, Joseph Pickard, Megumi Inoue, Letha Chadiha, Sharon Johnson
Social Work Faculty Works
This study analyzes whether social support serves as a link to or substitute for formal services among African American female caregivers seeking help with emotional problems. It also analyzes other determinants of help-seeking. It relies on data from the Black Rural and Urban Caregivers Mental Health and Functioning Study and is guided by a modified version of the behavioral model of health services use. Using hierarchical binary logistic regression, analyses reveal that only age, stress, and support from fellow church members are statistically significantly associated with the likelihood of help-seeking. These results support the linking hypothesis, suggesting that the social …

Decent Daddy, Imperfect Daddy: Black Male Rap Artists’ Views Of Fatherhood And The Family, Matthew Oware
Decent Daddy, Imperfect Daddy: Black Male Rap Artists’ Views Of Fatherhood And The Family, Matthew Oware
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Research examining contemporary African-American male fathers has either presented them as being absent and uninvolved in their children’s lives (Moynihan 1965; Anderson 1999) or engaged with their children—despite structural or institutional constraints they face (Edin et al., Ann Am Acad Polit Soc Sci 621:149–177, 2009; Reynolds, Ann Am Acad Polit Soc Sci 624:12–28, 2009). Scant scholarship explores the medium that provides black males their own voices—rap music—in regards to their beliefs about the family. This exploratory research examines how black male rappers talk about motherhood, fatherhood, and parenthood. The content analysis of 391 of rap songs from the years 2004 …

The Art Of Scanning, Paul Royster
The Art Of Scanning, Paul Royster
Institutional Repository Information
Yes, it is presumptuous to call scanning an “art,” when it is really more of a craft, but “The Craft of Scanning” doesn’t sound as sexy, so we will consider it for the time being as one of the fine arts, like music, or painting, or dance. This short treatise derives from work done in the process of scanning published and original materials to create PDF files for online publication or deposit in our institutional repository. This approach assumes you have a scanner and software to drive it, and also three software programs from Adobe (sold together as their Creative …

Survey Response In A Statewide Social Experiment: Differences In Being Located And Collaborating By Race And Hispanic Origin, Yunju Nam, Lisa Reyes Mason, Youngmi Kim, Margaret Clancy, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
This study examines whether and how survey response differs by race and Hispanic origin, using data from birth certificates and survey administrative data from a large-scale statewide experiment. The sample consists of mothers of infants selected from Oklahoma birth certificates using a stratified random sampling method (N=7,11). This study uses Heckman probit analysis to consider two stages of survey response: (1) being located by the survey team and (2) completing a questionnaire through collaboration with the survey team. Analysis results show that African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanics are significantly less likely to be located during the study recruitment than …

"We Try To Create The World That We Want": Intentional Communities Forging Livable Lives In St. Louis, Joshua Lockyer, Peter Benson, Daniel Burton, Leeann Felder, Danielle Hayes, Erica Jackey, Alysa Lerman
Center for Social Development Research
This paper analyzes ethnographic research conducted in five intentional communities in the St. Louis region. Intentional communities have long been formed and entered into by people seeking to create more ideal, more livable lives. Our research focused on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the members of the five communities, the motivations of members for joining, and the benefits and shortcomings they experience. In reporting these findings we summarize common themes that help us to better understand why people join intentional communities, how those communities work, and the values and goals that underpin conceptions of quality of life there. We …

Financial Constraints On Corporate Goodness, Jeffrey D. Kubik, Jose A. Scheinkman, Harrison Hong
Financial Constraints On Corporate Goodness, Jeffrey D. Kubik, Jose A. Scheinkman, Harrison Hong
Economics - All Scholarship
We model the firm's optimal choice of capital and goodness subject to financial constraints. Managers and shareholders derive benefits over profits and social responsibility. Goodness is costly and its marginal benefit is finite; as a result, less-constrained firms spend more on goodness. We verify that less-constrained firms do indeed have higher social responsibility scores. Our empirical analysis addresses identification issues that have long plagued the corporate social responsibility literature, establishing the causality of this relationship using a natural experiment. During the technology bubble, previously constrained firms experienced a temporary relaxation of their constraints and their goodness scores also temporarily increased …

A Root Cause Analysis Of The Barriers To Transparency Among Physicians A Systemic Perspective, Bianca Perez
A Root Cause Analysis Of The Barriers To Transparency Among Physicians A Systemic Perspective, Bianca Perez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transparency in healthcare relates to formally reporting medical errors and disclosing bad outcomes to patients and families. Unfortunately, most physicians are not in the habit of communicating transparently, as many studies have shown the existence of a large medical error information gap. Research also shows that creating a culture of transparency would mutually support patient safety and risk management goals by concomitantly reducing medical errors and alleviating the malpractice crisis. Three predictor variables are used to represent the various dimensions of the context just described. Perfectionism represents the intrapersonal domain, socio-organizational climate represents the interpersonal and institutional domains, and medico-legal …
Age-Typing Across Occupations When, Where, And Why Age-Typing Exists, Michael Dennis Reeves
Age-Typing Across Occupations When, Where, And Why Age-Typing Exists, Michael Dennis Reeves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study sought to determine the direction and degree to which occupations representative of all major occupational categories are viewed as age-typed (i.e., more appropriate for older or younger workers). The 60 occupations examined were the 12 most common and familiar occupations in each of five occupational categories used by the U.S. Census Bureau. I randomly assigned 365 participants to one of three survey conditions. Participants rated the feature centrality, proportional representation, normative age, and optimal performance age of 20 of the 60 occupations and the age-type of 20 different occupations. Results showed that participants reliably rated the occupations …
Searching For Meaningful Use Of Health Information Technology A Study Of Cardiovascular Disease Care In Veterans General Hospitals, Carey L. Thaldorf
Searching For Meaningful Use Of Health Information Technology A Study Of Cardiovascular Disease Care In Veterans General Hospitals, Carey L. Thaldorf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cost of healthcare in the United States is on an upward trajectory towards an unsustainable level. In order to address this, Congress and the Obama Administration passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 to begin the process of controlling these costs. Within the ARRA is the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) section which creates financial incentives to invest in Health Information Technology (HIT) and to develop a means to measure the Meaningful Use of specific functions of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). This research examines the widely used Joint Commission datasets to determine …

The Response Of American Police Agencies To Digital Evidence, Hamdi Yesilyurt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Little is known about the variation in digital forensics practice in the United States as adopted by large local police agencies. This study investigated how environmental constraints, contextual factors, organizational complexity, and organizational control relate to the adoption of digital forensics practice. This study integrated 3 theoretical perspectives in organizational studies to guide the analysis of the relations: institutional theory, contingency theory, and adoption-of-innovation theory. Institutional theory was used to analyze the impact of environmental constraints on the adoption of innovation, and contingency theory was used to examine the impacts of organizational control on the adoption of innovation. Adoption of …
Factors Influencing The Variability In Social Capital, James R. Downing
Factors Influencing The Variability In Social Capital, James R. Downing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research provides insights into three aspects of social capital: the factors that influence its variability; its two-dimensional nature; and the relationship between social capital and membership in a YMCA. These insights have implications for social capital theory, for public policy, for organizational management and for individual well-being. Most social capital research treats the construct as a causal variable and analyzes the implications of different levels of social capital for certain aspects of individual and community well-being. This treatment implies that levels of social capital vary. Little research has been done to analyze the factors that cause social capital variability …
