The Structure Of The American Economy, Eric O'N. Fisher, Kathryn G. Marshall Feb 2011

The Structure Of The American Economy, Eric O'N. Fisher, Kathryn G. Marshall

Economics

We explore the relationship between input–output accounts and the national revenue function. The generalized inverse of an economy’s technology matrix carries information relating changes in endowments with changes in outputs; its transpose relates output prices and factor prices. Our primary theoretical contribution is to derive an economy’s revenue function for an arbitrary Leontief technology. Our main empirical contribution is to compute the national revenue function for the American economy in 2003 and to describe its properties. We implement our ideas using two different models: one where all factors are mobile and another with sector-specific capital.

Analysis Of The Essential Programs And Services Disadvantaged Youth Cost Component, David L. Silvernail Phd, James E. Sloan

School Funding - Essential Programs and Services (EPS)

Prior to implementation of EPS, Maine’s funding formula had little in terms of prescribed levels of adjustment to insure vertical equity. But beginning in 2005-06, three vertical equity adjustments were put into place (special needs, LEP, and Disadvantaged Youth), and provisions were included in the law for three year reviews of these adjustments. The Disadvantaged Youth adjustment was first reviewed in Fall 2008. This report describes the results from the second regularly scheduled review in 2010-2011.

Assessment And Refinement Of Real-Time Travel Time Algorithms For Use In Practice, Phase Ii, Kristin A. Tufte, Soyoung Ahn, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri

TREC Final Reports

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has put a high priority on the use of existing dynamic message signs (DMS) to provide travel time estimates to the public. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has three DMS in the Portland metropolitan area configured to display travel time information. In the near future, ODOT would like to make travel time estimates available on additional DMS, over the Internet on tripcheck.com and via 511. Travel time estimates are valuable to the traveling public; however, the estimates must be accurate to be useful. The purpose of this study is to extend prior travel time …

The Security Situation For Central Asia: Afghanistan, Water, And Uzbek Stability, Carleton Wesley Becks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Central Asia has emerged on the global stage after spending decades in isolation. As developing nations, most of Central Asia possesses the resources to spur rapid development. Things would seem to be in the region's favor. There are, however, a few events that could derail the region.

Afghanistan is on the periphery of the region and presents a series of difficult dilemmas such as creating a functioning government from a country that has been at war for nearly 30 years, the problem of the insurgency in the south, and narcotics trafficking.

Water is scarce in the region, the leaders cannot …

Temporally Legal: My Traveling Across Borders Of Im/Migration, Hsin-I Cheng

Communication

The United States remains one of the most desirable nations for higher education , with 623,805 enrolled international students, which constitutes 3.5% of the total enrollment in the 2007 - 2008 academic year. Among them, some choose to stay after completing their education and become what Motomura (2006) describes as the "Americans in waiting:' 1bis refers to those who obtained legal Permanent Residency (PR) status as green card holders, but not U.S . citizenship. Having PR status is imperative before one becomes a naturalized citizen with all rights given to a U.S.-born citizen.

The States' Next Challenge--Securing Primary Care For Expanded Medicaid Populations, Leighton C. Ku, Karen Jones, Peter Shin, Brian K. Bruen, Katherine J. Hayes

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In the coming years, the United States must address both an expansion of Medicaid coverage and an unexpected shortage of primary care physicians. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Medicaid eligibility threshold for nonelderly adults will rise to 133% of the federal poverty level (about $30,000 for a family of four) in 2014. States with restrictive Medicaid eligibility requirements and high rates of uninsured residents will expand coverage substantially, while programs in states with higher current Medicaid eligibility thresholds and fewer uninsured residents will grow less. However, since many of the states with the largest anticipated …

Judgment And Decision Making In Adolescence, Dustin Albert, Laurence Steinberg Feb 2011

Judgment And Decision Making In Adolescence, Dustin Albert, Laurence Steinberg

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this article, we review the most important findings to have emerged during the past 10 years in the study of judgment and decision making (JDM) in adolescence and look ahead to possible new directions in this burgeoning area of research. Three inter-related shifts in research emphasis are of particular importance and serve to organize this review. First, research grounded in normative models of JDM has moved beyond the study of age differences in risk perception and toward a dynamic account of the factors predicting adolescent decisions. Second, the field has seen widespread adoption of dual-process models of cognitive development …

The Effect Of Regulatory Focus On Idea Generation And Idea Evaluation, Kanexa, Inc., Roni Reiter-Palmon Feb 2011

The Effect Of Regulatory Focus On Idea Generation And Idea Evaluation, Kanexa, Inc., Roni Reiter-Palmon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Regulatory focus, an individual difference characteristic, has been linked to decision making, such that those with a promotion focus show more risk taking and flexibility whereas those with a prevention focus are risk averse and more rigid. The relationship between regulatory focus and creativity has also been investigated, with similar results. However, the focus of these efforts has been on the idea generation phase (e.g., Friedman & Forster, 2001; Lam & Chiu, 2002). This study suggests that the influence of regulatory focus on creativity operates differently for the idea evaluation phase than with the idea generation phase. Furthermore, there are …

Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti Feb 2011

Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti

Whittier Scholars Program

Time variations in expected returns are related to the business cycle. Evidence shows that expected returns are higher in economic recessions, since investors are less willing to hold risky assets, and lower in economic booms. This suggests that time variations in equity premiums should be accounted for by variables related to the business cycle. Being able to model equity premiums helps investors optimize their portfolios. Therefore, we develop a conditioning macroeconomic variable that captures time variation in risk premium across business cycles and we test its predictive power for future market returns. More specifically we look at the following macro-economic …

Recuerdos Hablados /Memories Spoken: Toward The Co-Creation Of Digital Knowledge With Community Significance, Mary M. Somerville, Dana Echohawk Feb 2011

Recuerdos Hablados /Memories Spoken: Toward The Co-Creation Of Digital Knowledge With Community Significance, Mary M. Somerville, Dana Echohawk

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Collaborative relationships among libraries, archives, and museums can fruitfully engage cultural community members in collaborative construction of digital knowledge. A continuum of co-creation approaches in the Center for Colorado & the West at Auraria Library illustrates the value of working together. The most mature community-generated initiative produces digital images with contextualizing metadata of cultural "significance." Examples suggest that inclusive, community-generated digital knowledge activities can shape interpretations and narratives of the past and present, thereby influencing construction of the future, as community members express their contexts, concepts, and truths. Concluding remarks consider implications for community-generated digital knowledge activities that give "voice" …

Schooling Passions: Nation, History, And Language In Contemporary Western India (Book Review), Christopher Bischof Feb 2011

Schooling Passions: Nation, History, And Language In Contemporary Western India (Book Review), Christopher Bischof

History Faculty Publications

Schooling Passions is an anthropological work that explores the everyday production of local, regional, and national senses of belonging in the elementary schools in the locality of Kolhapur near the southern boundary of the state of Maharashtra, India. Kolhapur was an independent kingdom until 1949 and traces its origin to Shivaji Bhosale, a seventeenth-century hero-warrior who founded the Marathi nation. Equipped with a knowledge of Marathi and significant expertise in nationalism, citizenship, education, and gender, Véronique Benei conducted fieldwork at five schools in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the expectation that education would be less nationalistic there than …
