2009 Pay And Pension Commission Report, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2011

2009 Pay And Pension Commission Report, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The 2009 Pay and Pension Commission (PPC) Report is a major departure from the previous reports in so far as it examines compensation reforms as part of the overall reforms of the whole value china of human resource policies of the government. The Report’s findings are based on the basic premise that the channel of economic growth filtering down effectively to the poor and less privileged is a function of public sector governance – policy making, regulation, implementation of projects and programs, and delivery of basic services. Government has therefore, a critical role to play not by controlling the commanding …

First Day Without A Desk Buddy: A Detailed Summary, Audrey H. Schwinn

Blogging the Library

Today is my first day behind the Ref. Desk without a Desk Buddy. I'm glad it's a morning shift because those are usually much quieter and less eventful than afternoon shifts. All of the librarians have reassured me that if I need help answering a question I can just call any of them, but so far I've been fine. I've been keeping a list of everything that occurs at the Desk this morning so that I can properly document my first day out here by myself. So far it hasn't been terribly interesting, but right now I'm ok with that. …

Who Are The Health Center Patients Who Risk Losing Care Under The House Of Representatives' Proposed Fy 2011 Spending Reductions?, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Leighton C. Ku

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

On February 20, 2011, the United States House of Representatives approved more than $61 billion in discretionary spending reductions for the remainder of FY 2011. The legislation includes $1.3 billion in direct spending cuts for community health centers. Using the NACHC patient estimates, we present evidence on the characteristics of patients whose continuing access to health center services is at risk. We arrived at these estimates using data from the Uniform Data System (UDS), the federal reporting system in which all health centers must participate, as well as national estimates from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), and published reports …

The Alliance-Outcome Association In Cbt And Usual Care For Youth Depression Delivered In Community Settings, Shelley Avny Feb 2011

The Alliance-Outcome Association In Cbt And Usual Care For Youth Depression Delivered In Community Settings, Shelley Avny

Theses and Dissertations

The child-therapist alliance is believed to be a critical ingredient of successful psychotherapy for youth depression. However, only a few studies have examined the association between the alliance and clinical outcomes in the treatment of youth depression. The present thesis examined the alliance-outcome association in two treatments for youth depression: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and usual clinical care (UC). Data were from an effectiveness trial conducted in six community clinics (see Weisz et al., 2009). Forty-one youth were randomly assigned to receive CBT or UC from community clinicians. The observed early alliance, alliance shifts, and self-reported alliance did not significantly predict …

Beyond Foursquare: Library Treks With Scvngr, Amy E. Vecchione, Margaret Mellinger

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

SCVNGR is a game-based geolocation application where users can earn points or gain rewards by completing challenges and treks. Builders design questions that involve text based answers (open ended or multiple choice), QR codes, or photo challenges. Librarians at Boise State University and Oregon State University have built treks and challenges using SCVNGR for library orientations and instruction. They have found SCVNGR a better environment than Foursquare for these purposes. With SCVNGR, students can participate in the challenges and treks using not only their smart phones and mobile devices, but also via text-messaging and laptops. Librarians can easily create multiple …

The Anchor, Volume 124.16: February 23, 2011, Hope College

The Anchor: 2011

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

An Update On Red Light Camera Research: The Need For Federal Standards In The Interest Of Public Safety, Barbara Langland-Orban, John T. Large, Etienne E. Pracht

Florida Public Health Review

Since publishing our critique of red light camera (RLC) studies in 2008, we have gained increased insights on the controversy over RLCs. Herein we provide additional information on RLCs, and use a question-and-answer format to address frequently asked questions. This update includes the rationale given for ignoring fatalities at RLC sites, the convergence in findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's compendium of best RLC studies, common violations of research methods in RLC evaluations, the RLC cost-to-benefit implications for motorists, an explanation for the increase in rear-end crashes at RLC sites, and why RLCs may be ineffective in reducing …

Decreasing Unwanted Pregnancies By Increasing Use Of Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Ecps): A Leadership Approach, Kara Mcginnis Feb 2011

Decreasing Unwanted Pregnancies By Increasing Use Of Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Ecps): A Leadership Approach, Kara Mcginnis

Florida Public Health Review

Unwanted pregnancies burden the U.S. healthcare system, as well as create challenges for women, families, and children. Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) can prevent a large percentage of unwanted pregnancies if used appropriately. Factors contributing to non-use of ECPs include the negative social environment created by views on sexual health, misunderstanding concerning the mechanism ofaction, women’s misperceptions oftheir risks ofgetting pregnant and how ECPs work, barriers to obtaining ECPs, and lack of counseling about ECPs from healthcare providers. Leadership is needed to address these factors contributing to the problem. Health educators are in a unique position to lead the field in …

The Effects Of Age-Of-Acquisition On Ambiguity Resolution: Evidence From Eye Movements, Barbara J. Juhasz, Margaret M. Gullick, Leah W. Shesler Feb 2011

The Effects Of Age-Of-Acquisition On Ambiguity Resolution: Evidence From Eye Movements, Barbara J. Juhasz, Margaret M. Gullick, Leah W. Shesler

Dartmouth Scholarship

Words that are rated as acquired earlier in life receive shorter fixation durations than later acquired words, even when word frequency is adequately controlled (Juhasz & Rayner, 2003; 2006). Some theories posit that age-of-acquisition (AoA) affects the semantic representation of words (e.g., Steyvers & Tenenbaum, 2005), while others suggest that AoA should have an influence at multiple levels in the mental lexicon (e.g. Ellis & Lambon Ralph, 2000). In past studies, early and late AoA words have differed from each other in orthography, phonology, and meaning, making it difficult to localize the influence of AoA. Two experiments are reported which …

Examining Gps Monitoring Alerts Triggered By Sex Offenders: The Divergence Of Legislative Goals And Practical Application In Community Corrections, Gaylene Armstrong, Beth C. Freeman Feb 2011

Examining Gps Monitoring Alerts Triggered By Sex Offenders: The Divergence Of Legislative Goals And Practical Application In Community Corrections, Gaylene Armstrong, Beth C. Freeman

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Purpose

Legislative mandates that require GPS monitoring of offenders add to the existing logistical complexities of community supervision. Challenges in implementing GPS policies and practices are heightened by the lack of sound empirical research. Studies examining the relationships between GPS monitoring of sex offenders in the community and the legislative goals of public safety, deterrence, and cost effectiveness are virtually nonexistent. To begin to address this gap in the literature, this study examines the impact of a statutorily-based GPS monitoring program for adult sex offenders convicted of dangerous crimes against children and placed under community supervision.

Method

Official offender generated …
