Why Information Literacy Is Invisible, William Badke Mar 2011

Why Information Literacy Is Invisible, William Badke

Communications in Information Literacy

Despite the many information literacy programs on higher education campuses, the literature of information literacy and the concept of information literacy as a viable academic subject remain hidden to most professors and academic administrators. Information literacy is invisible to academia because it is misunderstood, academic administrators have not put it on their institutions' agendas, the literature of information literacy remains in the library silo, there is a false belief that information literacy is acquired only by experience, there is a false assumption that technological ability is the same as information literacy, faculty culture makes information literacy less significant than other …

Gender Differences And Similarities In Adolescents' Ways Of Coping, Bettina Piko Mar 2011

Gender Differences And Similarities In Adolescents' Ways Of Coping, Bettina Piko

The Psychological Record

Various factors have an influence on which coping strategies
are mobilized under specific circumstances, among others, age
and gender. The present paper focuses on the interrelationships
between the ways of coping and some health-related variables in
adolescence. Data were collected among secondary school
students (n = 1039) in Szeged, Hungary: Factor analysis of the
shortened and adapted version of the Ways of Coping
Questionnaire gave a four-factor solution: passive coping,
problem-analyzing coping, risky coping, and support-seeking
coping. Passive and support-seeking ways of coping were more
common among girls, however, this latter way of coping proved to
be a more significant …

The Health Care Access And Cost Consequences Of Reducing Health Center Funding, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum Mar 2011

The Health Care Access And Cost Consequences Of Reducing Health Center Funding, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

For over four decades, community health centers have served a critical role in providing affordable access to quality care to some of the nation's most vulnerable populations. Health centers have historically enjoyed broad bipartisan support, based on the evidence documenting their high quality care, crucial role in both urban and rural communities, and ability to "bend the cost curve."

On February 20, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reduce discretionary health center funding by $1.3 billion in FY 2011 alone. Although the spending bill was rejected by the U.S. Senate on March 10, 2011, final spending measures for …

The Portrayal Of Older Characters In Popular Children's Books: A Content Analysis From 2000 To 2010., Jesica L. Danowski Mar 2011

The Portrayal Of Older Characters In Popular Children's Books: A Content Analysis From 2000 To 2010., Jesica L. Danowski

Theses and Dissertations

While picture books are often viewed as educational resources for young readers, it is crucial to not overlook the images and content this literary medium contains. Research suggests that repetitive messages encompassing a stereotypical nature cultivate lasting impressions on young audiences. One portrayal often associated with negative implications is the depictions of older characters in children's first literature. This investigation analyzed a selection of picture books from the New York Times best sellers list, the Book Sense best sellers list, and the Caldecott award winners for the years 2000–2010. In an attempt to provide a time spectrum communicating the levels …

Act 35, New School Performance Ratings, And School Choice, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

Act 35 was a product of the Lakeview v Huckabee case and the related Extraordinary Legislative Session. The law § 6-15-2101 of the Arkansas code required the establishment of three school ratings: a rating of the school’s current academic performance (or status), a rating of the school’s academic improvement (see the OEP policy brief on the new improvement rating) 1 , and a rating based on the school’s fiscal practices. The first set of improvement scores were reported based on the standardized tests administered in spring of 2007 and 2008. The first ratings based on current academic performance are to …

The Degree Qualifications Profile, Lumina Foundation Mar 2011

The Degree Qualifications Profile, Lumina Foundation

UNLV Libraries-Greater Western Library Alliance Conference

The need for a Degree Profile

Higher learning has taken on new importance in today’s knowledge society. To succeed in the contemporary workplace, today’s students must prepare for jobs that are rapidly changing, use technologies that are still emerging and work with colleagues from (and often in) all parts of the globe. The challenges that graduates face as citizens during their lives are similarly complex and also are affected by developments around the world.

Recognizing the economic and societal importance of higher levels of learning, national leaders, policymakers, analysts and major philanthropies have called for a dramatic increase in the …

The Quality Imperative: Match Ambitious Goals For College Attainment With An Ambitious Vision For Learning, Board Of Directors Of The Association Of American Colleges And Universities

UNLV Libraries-Greater Western Library Alliance Conference

Facing an avalanche of evidence that the United States no longer leads the world in postsecondary attainment, educational leaders at all levels have begun a far-reaching effort to increase significantly the number of students entering and completing higher education. This is a top priority for the Obama administration, for policy leaders and philanthropy, and for colleges and universities.

The Association of American Colleges and Universities welcomes and strongly supports the emerging national commitment to expand appreciably both access to college and successful completion. We are especially concerned that higher education provide equitable access and expanded opportunity for groups and communities …

Universal Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (Uulo) Recommendations, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Mar 2011

Universal Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (Uulo) Recommendations, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

UNLV Libraries-Greater Western Library Alliance Conference

Outcomes (What we want students to achieve) and Objectives (How we will know students achieve the goals)

The undergraduate learning outcomes articulate clear expectations for what all UNLV students should know and be able to do upon graduation. The undergraduate learning outcomes form the foundation for general education but also extend into the majors. This comprehensive approach aims to meld undergraduate learning into a more intentional, coherent experience that consists of the purposeful sequencing of learning from the first year, to the middle years, to the senior year and includes learning both within and outside the major, including co-curricular expenences.

Faculty Institute On Research Based-Learning In High Impact Courses, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

UNLV Libraries-Greater Western Library Alliance Conference

In Spring 2009, the Library Advisory Board agreed to fund a proposal for the Libraries to collaborate with campus partners to provide support to faculty who were faced with several initiatives that impact the way faculty deliver their course content, develop their assignments and assess their success. These initiatives include the movement to large enrollment classes, especially for large impact, core courses; the redesign of the general education requirements around universal learning outcomes; and, enhancing the first-year experience for incoming students. There is no single entity on campus in a position to provide the faculty support and development needed.

The …
