Ovulation, Female Competition, And Product Choice: Hormonal Influences On Consumer Behavior, Kristina M. Durante, Vladas Griskevicius, Sarah E. Hill, Carin Perilloux, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent research shows that women experience nonconscious shifts across different phases of the monthly ovulatory cycle. For example, women at peak fertility (near ovulation) are attracted to different kinds of men and show increased desire to attend social gatherings. Building on the evolutionary logic behind such effects, we examined how, why, and when hormonal fluctuations associated with ovulation influenced women's product choices. In three experiments, we show that at peak fertility women nonconsciously choose products that enhance appearance (e.g., choosing sexy rather than more conservative clothing). This hormonally regulated effect appears to be driven by a desire to outdo attractive …

The Mandatory Death Penalty And A Sparsely Worded Constitution, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

It was not unexpected that the Singapore Court of Appeal would reaffirm the constitutionality of the mandatory death penalty for certain forms of drug trafficking in Yong Vui Kong v Public Prosecutor [2010] 3 S.L.R 489. ... The appellant made submissions based on Articles 9(1) and 12(1) of the Constitution, which respectively guarantee rights to life and personal liberty, and to equality before the law and equal protection of the law. This note examines aspects of the Article 9(1) arguments.

The Effects Of Explicit And Implicit Cognitive Factors On The Learning Patterns In The Iowa Gambling Task, Melissa J. Hawthorne, Dawn R. Weatherford, Karin Tochkov Apr 2011

The Effects Of Explicit And Implicit Cognitive Factors On The Learning Patterns In The Iowa Gambling Task, Melissa J. Hawthorne, Dawn R. Weatherford, Karin Tochkov

Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has become a standard tool in the area of decision making, but recent studies have indicated that cognitive factors might distort the implicit learning expected from the original design of the task. This paper examines the effects of cognitive factors on the performance and learning outcomes of the IGT along two dimensions. First, the instructions for the task are manipulated to test whether more detailed information is conducive to adopting a winning strategy in the IGT. Second, procedural priming’s role is investigated by administering a pattern recognition task ahead of the IGT. The results indicate …

Pursuing "Peace" In Israel/Palestine, Maia Hallward Apr 2011

Pursuing "Peace" In Israel/Palestine, Maia Hallward

Faculty Articles

Nine years after the outbreak of the second intifada (uprising) in September 2000 and sixteen years after the signing of the Oslo Accords in September 1993, Israelis and Palestinians seem as far as ever from a final status agreement. Diplomatic efforts by the George W. Bush administration - notably the Performance-Based Road Map to Peace and the 2007 Annapolis Conference - avoided the core conflict issues, and delayed such negotiations by emphasizing "provisional" borders. Not only do such tactics allow more time for consolidating "facts on the ground" that can prejudice final status negotiations, but the lack of a political …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety Disorders In Youth, Laura D. Seligman, Thomas H. Ollendick Apr 2011

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety Disorders In Youth, Laura D. Seligman, Thomas H. Ollendick

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) have been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Randomized clinical trials indicate that approximately two-thirds of children treated with CBT will be free of their primary diagnosis at posttreatment. Although several CBT treatment packages have been investigated in youth with diverse anxiety disorders, common core components have been identified. A comprehensive assessment, development of a good therapeutic relationship and working alliance, cognitive restructuring, repeated exposure with reduction of avoidance behavior, and skills training comprise the core procedures for the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth.

"There's Something Wrong About The Way You Look, There's Something Wrong With You": Memorable Messages Concerning Identity And Body Weight, Scott A. Richmond Apr 2011

"There's Something Wrong About The Way You Look, There's Something Wrong With You": Memorable Messages Concerning Identity And Body Weight, Scott A. Richmond

Masters Theses

This thesis examined the body weight discourse through interviews concerning memorable messages received prior to and after a period of weight loss, along with messages' effects on individuals' identities. As the communication of messages concerning body weight and identity had yet to be thoroughly examined, this study worked to illuminate how the discourse is communicated.

Emergent themes were discussed, such as pre-weight loss messages communicating a separate social identity, less social desirability, and advice about body weight. Post-weight messages themes of acknowledging a change in appearance, positive valuation of the change, and questions on the weight change were also examined. …

Drafting Human Ancestry: What Does The Neanderthal Genome Tell Us About Hominid Evolution? Commentary On Green Et Al. (2010), Michael Hofreiter

Human Biology

Ten years after the first draft versions of the human genome were
announced, technical progress in both DNA sequencing and ancient DNA
analyses has allowed a research team around Ed Green and Svante Pa¨a¨bo to
complete this task from infinitely more difficult hominid samples: a few
pieces of bone originating from our closest, albeit extinct, relatives, the
Neanderthals. Pulling the Neanderthal sequences out of a sea of contaminating
environmental DNA impregnating the bones and at the same time
avoiding the problems of contamination with modern human DNA is in itself
a remarkable accomplishment. However, the crucial question in the long …

Old School And New School: Engaging Undergraduates In Discipline- Based Research, Heidi Gauder, Fred W. Jenkins

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Cross-unit collaboration and curriculum integration became a reality when librarians were approached by academic departments to teach a course about conducting discipline-specific research skills. At this university students are required to demonstrate general and discipline-specific information literacy competencies, which are determined by the departments and programs, not by the library; in reality most of the departments and programs adopt the general information literacy competencies for both sets of competencies.

Two departments, however, had 1-credit hour research courses on the books; in one case, the course had been taught over a weekend by a faculty member and in the other case, …

Simple Marketing Techniques And Space Planning To Increase Circulation, Kelly Giles, D. Yvonne Jones, Margarite Mccandless, Kara Kiblinger, Jenne Klotz

Libraries

In the academic Information Commons, the frontline staff are key library assets. This article demonstrates one example of frontline staff observing, analyzing, and modifying user behavior using simple marketing techniques and space planning. James Madison University East Campus Library personnel increased circulation of books by increasing the visibility of the book collection. Minor furniture changes in the lobby, adding rotating themed book displays, and providing digital and print signage produced a dramatic effect. Circulation numbers essentially doubled for the lobby browsing book collection and markedly increased for books highlighted in the displays.

Examining Associations Between Mothers' Early Adversity, Depression And Maternal Sensitivity, Rossana Bisceglia, Greg Moran, Jennifer Jenkins

Psychology Presentations

This study tested two models for the indirect influence of mothers’ early adversity on maternal sensitivity:

Model A:

  • Mothers’ appraisal of infant temperament was hypothesized to mediate the influence of mothers’ early adversity and depression on maternal sensitivity
  • There would be no direct influence of maternal depression

Model B:

  • Mothers’ depression was hypothesized to have a direct influence on maternal sensitivity
  • Mothers’ perception of infant temperament would not mediate the influence of maternal depression on maternal sensitivity

Copyright Ownership Of Online News: Cultivating A Transformation Ethos In America's Emerging Statutory Attribution Right, Edward L. Carter Mar 2011

Copyright Ownership Of Online News: Cultivating A Transformation Ethos In America's Emerging Statutory Attribution Right, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

Several federal district courts in 2009 and 2010 interpreted a relatively obscure provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to grant a potentially broad right of attribution to owners of copyright in creative works. The statutory provision prohibits removal or alteration of copyright management information. The law gives reason for both hope and fear for news organizations. On one hand, an attribution requirement is seen by some in the news industry as relief from negative effects of technology, including online news aggregators. On the other hand, news organizations already have been sued under the copyright management provision for their conduct …

Maelstrom; Or, Life After The Woods: Paolo Bacigalupi's "The Gambler", Otto Neubauer Mar 2011

Maelstrom; Or, Life After The Woods: Paolo Bacigalupi's "The Gambler", Otto Neubauer

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Much of contemporary space-based science fiction tends to ignore nature completely, with food replicators and life support systems eliminating the need for plants as anything but decoration. In contrast, Earth-based science fiction stories often center on a conflict between man and nature. Yet though the primary themes in Paolo Bacigalupi’s “The Gambler”, Bruce Sterling’s “We See Things Differently”, and Harlan Ellison’s “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman” are political (with “The Gambler” being a critical portrayal of the fourth estate), each offers a small window into how man ought or ought not to relate to nature. While the latter two offer …

Completing The Research Cycle: The Role Of Libraries In The Publication And Dissemination Of Undergraduate Student Research, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Merinda Hensley, Sarah Shreeves

Scholarly Publications

Since the publication of Reinventing Undergraduate Education: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities (Boyer Commission 1998), many colleges and universities have committed to systematic programs of undergraduate research. Librarians are increasingly proactive in providing the tools and research support services necessary to build long-term relationships with undergraduate student researchers through a variety of services and outreach including instruction services, space for individual and group research, and targeted collection development. However, two crucial elements are under-developed: dissemination and persistent access to this scholarly work. With the production of original scholarly or creative work comes the expectation to disseminate and share the …
