Food Is Life: The Impact Of A Changing Food Industry On The Role Of Women In The Home, Diana Lay
Food Is Life: The Impact Of A Changing Food Industry On The Role Of Women In The Home, Diana Lay
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper looks at how growing food insecurity in Ghana, and Cape Coast in particular, is changing the role of women in the community. It examines government agricultural policy and its influence on urban communities, including Cape Coast. It seeks to understand the factors that women take into account when they prepare meals for their families and ways in which women are adapting to increasing prices of food and imported ingredients available in the markets. The research incorporated is based on the personal experiences of the author, interviews, and secondary sources. It looks at power dynamics within the community, as …
Fight Or Flight: The Situation Of The Young And Jobless In Morocco, Anduriña Espinoza
Fight Or Flight: The Situation Of The Young And Jobless In Morocco, Anduriña Espinoza
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In the context of the Arab Spring, Morocco faces some of the biggest anti-government protests in recent history, many of which are motivated at least in part by the poor and persistent employment problem. Bearing in mind the staggeringly high numbers of unemployed youth in a country that is also one of the biggest senders of migrants to Europe and North America, I have based my study on the duality of choice Moroccans face. When confronted with deteriorating quality in a given product, as economist Albert O. Hirschman has articulated in his theory on exit, voice, and loyalty, people can …
Why Now And What's Next: The February 20th Movement’S Challenge To The State, Marina Balleria
Why Now And What's Next: The February 20th Movement’S Challenge To The State, Marina Balleria
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Moroccan state takes a nuanced place among autocracies and democracies—the regime features fundamental democratic institutions and while the central power of the monarchy is maintained through a constellation of political, economic, social, and cultural institutions. In this case, David Brumberg’s classification of “liberalized autocracies” is useful, which defines these states as using a mixture of “guided pluralism, controlled elections and selective repression” to maintain and centralize power[1] This political structure of liberalized autocracy creates sufficient political opportunity for various protest movements to emerge but until recently few have successfully enacted change. The February 20th protest movement, inspired …
Post-Revolutionary Effects: Political Self-Education Of Tunisian Youth, Erica Zarlenga
Post-Revolutionary Effects: Political Self-Education Of Tunisian Youth, Erica Zarlenga
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tunisia is a country with a rich and diverse historical and cultural background that has absorbed many ideas from western thought into its political and educational systems. For many years, the Tunisian “Republic” had the appearance of a government similar to Western democracies, yet the president’s actions were very far from those of a democratically elected president. The flaws in former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali (Ben Ali)’s government in addition to sweeping unemployment and underdevelopment were the factors which led to the major uprising that became the Tunisian revolution. Although the revolution was a great symbolic victory for …
Duality In Bouazizi: Appraising The Contradiction, Alec Jacobson
Duality In Bouazizi: Appraising The Contradiction, Alec Jacobson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
We know that Mohammed Bouazizi lived in Sidi Bouzid and that he was often the sole income for a poor family. We know that he sold fruit from a cart and that, while vending on December 17th, 2010, he had an altercation with the police, and later doused himself in flammable liquid in front of the municipal offices and struck a match. There are some who know more – childhood friends, neighbors, customers, cousins – who knew the man and interacted with him over the course of his relatively short life. But for us, the general public of …
Community Empowerment Through Youth Employment: A Comparative Study Of Social Programs For Youth Job Creation, Stacey Nelson
Community Empowerment Through Youth Employment: A Comparative Study Of Social Programs For Youth Job Creation, Stacey Nelson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Entrepreneurial training may be a better means to livelihoods for youth in Uganda today than vocational or traditional education models. Even those with university degrees have difficulties being selected from saturated applicant pools for professional careers; vocational training programs give their otherwise-uneducated or unskilled students the means to an occupation though positions are limited. In traditional education systems or vocational programs, supplementary education encouraging entrepreneurship can help create careers where opportunities are scarce. By mobilizing youth, communities prosper. These activities can even create direct community benefit themselves.
This research observes the processes of both a vocational training model and a …

White Water Rafting And Its Role In Entrepreneurship At Bujagali Falls, Alex Nelson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The intention of this report was to explore the white water rafting industry on the Upper White Nile. Although the White Nile is widely considered one of the greatest stretches of white water in the world, there is little actually known about the industry itself. As a result the following research investigates the entrepreneurial nature of the rafting industry and its related adventure tourism activities. Additionally the research investigates the role of the soon to be finished Bujagali Hydroelectric Project and future dams to examine the impacts they are making on the local businesses and the community as a whole. …
(Wp 2011-03) State Government Revenue And Expenditures: A Bootstrap Panel Analysis, Abdur Chowdhury
(Wp 2011-03) State Government Revenue And Expenditures: A Bootstrap Panel Analysis, Abdur Chowdhury
Economics Working Papers
The current fiscal crises that most states in the United States are facing are generally the result of a severe macroeconomic downturn combined with a limited ability of the states to respond to such shocks. States are facing increased demand for public services at the same time revenue is falling. In this context, this paper explores the issue of temporal priority between government expenditures and revenue at the state and local levels. The results show that there is no uniform relationship between government revenue and spending across different states in the US. In fact, about 40% of the states show …
Patron Driven Acquisition Of Publisher-Hosted Content: Bypassing Drm, Jason S. Price
Patron Driven Acquisition Of Publisher-Hosted Content: Bypassing Drm, Jason S. Price
Library Staff Publications and Research
Academic library patron driven acquisition (PDA) of ebooks on aggregator platforms is gaining steam. Although there are many advantages to this model, aggregated ebook content is still hampered by digital rights management (DRM). Publisher hosted ebooks are often DRM free, providing user-friendly access to ebook chapters that emulates ejournal article access. Librarians and libraries should build win-win-win partnerships with aggregators and publishers that facilitate centralized PDA on aggregator platforms which results in library ownership of purchased books on DRM-free publisher platforms. Ultimately, a simpler solution would be to reduce the restrictiveness of digital rights management on aggregator-hosted content, which might …

Pandora’S Box Of Humanitarian Intervention, Edzia Carvalho
Pandora’S Box Of Humanitarian Intervention, Edzia Carvalho
Human Rights & Human Welfare
“The Case for Intervention in the Ivory Coast” reminded me of the discussion that my undergraduate students had during the previous academic term on the conundrums surrounding humanitarian intervention. They innately responded to the intense suffering of individuals and groups facing gross human rights violations and initially argued that inaction in the face of suffering cannot be justified on any grounds. However, with their international relations hats on, many of them soon realized that putting an end to such a state of affairs is not as easy or straightforward as they had hoped.

A Rights-Based Approach To Global Injustice, Brooke Ackerly
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Is reflection on global injustice part of the everyday lives of those who live in global privilege? Or does privilege let us wait to raise concerns about justice only when the media bring the graphic images of genocide and tragedy to our family rooms?

Target Industry Study: An Empirical Analysis Of Intertemporal Trends In Regional Industrial Base Composition, David M. Smith
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This paper follows existing literature on local industrial conditions and agglomeration economies in an adapted shift-share framework. The purpose of this study is to develop a cost-efficient empirical model that meets the needs of local government in analyzing changes in industrial composition. The data for this model is obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) with nondisclosed data provided by the Virginia Employment Commission which is sorted by North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) 2-digit industrial sectors. The model developed in this paper identifies certain industrial sectors which exert significant influence on the …

A Cross-Sectional Examination Of Factors Affecting Graduation Rates Across The School Divisions In The State Of Virginia., William Perrow
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
When citizens look to the government, there are multiple services that are expected to be provided. One of the most fundamental services is the access to an education to better prepare the nation’s children for the future. Education is not just a service that is expected, it is a necessity in the global world that the United States is competing in. Currently the United State of America is facing large numbers of high school students who are dropping out. This is a major concern for the future productivity and welfare of the nation. What is the problem that has caused …

Exploring The Effects Of Text Messaging On The Spelling Skills Of Ninth And 12th Grade Students, James G. Muhammad
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Text messaging has been criticized for a perceived negative impact on spelling skills of students and its increasing appearance in formal school papers. This paper presents a study of the effects of text messaging on the spelling skills of ninth and 12th grade students at a U.S. high school in a Chicago suburb. The 20 students – six in the ninth grade group and 14 in the 12th grade group – were given a questionnaire concerning their texting practices and a grade-appropriate spelling test. They also were asked if it is appropriate to use textisms in formal writings …

From Both Sides Now: A Recently-Hired Librarian And A Library Veteran Respond To The Loss Of A Favorite Database, Harry D. Nuttall, Carley Knight
Research, Publications & Creative Work
The recent economic downturn has disrupted libraries no less than it has other sectors, causing cutbacks in funding which have resulted in hiring freezes and layoffs, reduced operating hours and services, and smaller acquisitions budgets for both print and electronic materials. These cutbacks have been most acutely felt by library acquisitions departments and collection development librarians, but the public services areas -- especially instruction librarians -- feel the blow too and must adapt their practices to the reductions in resources. This paper details the response of two instruction librarians -- one a veteran of some two decades’ service and the …

Oregonians Report Broad Support For Policies That Could Reduce Prison Population, Jody Sundt
Oregonians Report Broad Support For Policies That Could Reduce Prison Population, Jody Sundt
Criminal Justice Policy Research Institute Research Briefs
Correctional spending is one of the largest and fastest growing parts of the Oregon budget, making it a target for increased scrutiny. According to a 2011 Legislative Fiscal Office report, the Department of Correction’s (DOC) budget represented close to 9% of the combined General and Lottery Funds in the 2009- 2011 biennium. Since 1993-1995, correctional spending increased almost threefold from close to $400 million to $1.4 billion. Moreover, the DOC’s share of the state budget almost doubled since the mid-1980s. In the context of declining revenue forecasts and increased demand for public services, state agencies are under pressure to reduce …
Communication Disconnect: Generational Stereotypes Between Generation X/Y And Baby Boomers In American And Chinese Organizational Communication, Yuxiang Du
Masters Theses
This research explores organizational communication between Generation X/Y and the Baby Boomers within the American and Chinese groups using social identity theory. Twenty participants were interviewed about their opinions on this issue. Thematic analysis was used to examine themes in the responses. The themes were organized into six categories: outlining Generation X/Y, outlining Baby Boomers, generational communication, generational stereotypes, cultural influences, and favorable solutions. Two referent elements were used through the whole discussion, social identity and cultural characteristics. The study revealed a strong social identity with all the four generational groups, difficulties in communication and stereotypes because of the identities. …

Addressing Water Quality Issues In Rural Cameroon With Household Biosand Filters, Laine Klopfensten, Laura Petrasky, Valerie Winton, Jeff Brown
Publications
This paper describes an ongoing collaboration between the Hope College student chapter of Engineers Without Borders – USA and the rural community of Nkuv in the Northwest Province of Cameroon related to improving drinking water quality using Manz biosand filters. The collaboration began in 2006 and focused on developing a community-based construction and distribution model for household water treatment units. Results from microbiology testing of the constructed filters indicate that this water treatment method is effective for improving water quality in rural areas. The results also highlight the need for ongoing assessment and adapting community education programs to provide necessary …
Asking For Permission: A Survey Of Copyright Workflows For Institutional Repositories, Ann Hanlon, Marisa Ramirez
Asking For Permission: A Survey Of Copyright Workflows For Institutional Repositories, Ann Hanlon, Marisa Ramirez
Library Faculty Research and Publications
An online survey of institutional repository (IR) managers identified copyright clearance trends in staffing and workflows. The majority of respondents followed a mediated deposit model, and reported that library personnel, instead of authors, engaged in copyright clearance activities for IRs. The most common “information gaps” pertained to the breadth of information in copyright directories like SHERPA/RoMEO. To fill these gaps, most respondents directly contacted publishers for permissions. Respondents typically did not share publisher responses with other IRs citing barriers such as time, expertise, staffing and the need for improved methods for sharing data with copyright directories.
The Effect Of Economic Freedom On Workers' Remittances To Labor Sending Countries, Lloyd Banwart
The Effect Of Economic Freedom On Workers' Remittances To Labor Sending Countries, Lloyd Banwart
Master's Theses - Economics
I test the determinants of workers’ remittances, with a focus on how economic freedom in the labor sending country affects the level of remittance inflows the country receives. I use an unbalanced panel data set between years 2000 and 2006. I find a positive and statistically significant relationship between economic freedom and the percentage of GDP from remittances. I show that the effect of economic freedom is dependent upon the level of economic development in the labor sending country (measured by real GDP per capita); as GDP per capita increases, the marginal effect of economic freedom on remittances decreases steadily.

Microfinance And Poverty Alleviation: A Case Study Of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar District In Cairo, Egypt, Noran Mohammed Farag
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tests whether microcredit offered by MFIs succeeded, from the perspectives of beneficiaries, in reducing the poverty of borrowers in poor areas in Cairo using the example of First Microfinance as a case study. The data was gathered using a tailored questionnaire on a sample of 151 beneficiaries. A linear regression model is used with the dependent variable as the difference in wealth indices before and after acquiring the loan and a set of independent variables. Microfinance showed a positive effect on poverty reduction but with a small magnitude. The results show that the lack of training provided to …

Examining The Value Of Word Of Mouth As A Marketing Tool For Poker Book, Jeffery J. Hwang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the spring of 2003, the poker world saw the launch of the World Poker Tour; that same May, an amateur poker player and online qualifier named Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker and the $2.5 million first prize, demonstrating that virtually anyone can win at poker. The result of these two events was a “poker boom” that, by September 2005, had the two largest poker book publishers on the planet reporting ten-fold increases in sales. And yet, outside of their own company websites, most of the largest poker book publishers on the planet …
Factors Affecting Information And Communication Technologies (Icts) Use By Academic Librarians In Southwestern Nigeria, Yacob Haliso
Factors Affecting Information And Communication Technologies (Icts) Use By Academic Librarians In Southwestern Nigeria, Yacob Haliso
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) improves service provision of librarians. In spite of this, it is observed that librarians in Nigeria do not maximally utilize the ICTs. Consequently, the communities of scholars complain of the poor information services provision by librarians. It is in the light of this that this study investigated factors that may be responsible for the poor utilization of the ICTs in the Southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive research design. A total enumerative sampling technique was used. The finding indicated that lack of organizational commitment towards ICT acquisition constituted the highest barrier …
