Intraseasonal Management Strategies For Deficit Irrigation, Isaac I. N. Mortensen Apr 2011

Intraseasonal Management Strategies For Deficit Irrigation, Isaac I. N. Mortensen

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Reduced availability of irrigation water to producers has led to the need for intraseasonal management strategies that efficiently use the limited supply of irrigation water.  Historical weather data was used to develop a range of conditions experienced at the location.  Sound weather data improves the dependability of management strategies.  Data from weather stations on the Automated Weather Data Network and the Colorado AgMet network were evaluated based upon net radiation and dew point temperature observations expected in an irrigated agricultural setting.  This weather data was used to create a relationship between the Penman-Montieth evapotranspiration (ET) and Hargreaves ET and …

Resilience And Community In The Age Of World-System Collapse, Glen David Kuecker, Thomas D. Hall Apr 2011

Resilience And Community In The Age Of World-System Collapse, Glen David Kuecker, Thomas D. Hall

History Faculty publications

In this essay we explore how humans might face systemic collapse and/or entry into a dark age through forms of community resilience. We also note that nature, types of communities, and degrees of resilience differ in core, peripheral, and semiperipheral areas of the contemporary world-system. Core or global north or first world communities have all but disintegrated due to neoliberal policies. However, communities in peripheral and semiperipheral areas are more emergent, and more resilient. These areas are most likely to have or to creatively develop strategies to overcome global collapse. We further argue that social scientists need to develop new …

Not So Fun City, William A. Casari Apr 2011

Not So Fun City, William A. Casari

Publications and Research

This article posits that the destruction of the South Bronx during the 1960s and 1970s was municipally approved across several mayoral administrations, most notably the term of John Lindsay who coined the catch phrase “Fun City,” referring to New York City on the first day of a transit strike. The author outlines several books and articles that detail the destruction caused by fires and city planning decisions that adversely affected White ethnic and neighborhoods of color in the South Bronx. Media portrayals during this period were used to stereotype certain areas of the Bronx which in turn allowed city planners …

Farm Program Payments: A Changing Pattern In Nebraska’S Farm Income, Bruce B. Johnson Apr 2011

Farm Program Payments: A Changing Pattern In Nebraska’S Farm Income, Bruce B. Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

Over the last decade, considerable change has occurred to the nature of farm cash receipts and net farm income. Total cash receipts to the state’s agricultural sector doubled from about $9.5 billion in 2000 to more than $19 billion in 2010. At the same time, total receipts to the crop sector accelerated even more - increasing from the $3 billion range to around $9 billion by the end of the decade, a threefold increase! The result has been net farm income levels climbing to the $4 billion range annually over the last few years, a level more than 50 percent …

Heifer Development Management: One Size Does Not Fit All, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson Apr 2011

Heifer Development Management: One Size Does Not Fit All, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

A substantial cost to beef cattle producers is the development or purchase of replacement females. Each year, beef cattle producers may replace as many as 20 percent of the herd, with the average being close to 16 percent. With so much of the producer’s success riding on the proper care, development and cost of supplying replacement heifers, it is no surprise that the literature is filled with studies devoted to determining the ideal maturity and strategies to develop them.

While the question of determining beef heifer replacement strategies has been studied in some detail, the complexity of relationships between the …

Resolving Division Fence Disputes In Nebraska, J. David Aiken Apr 2011

Resolving Division Fence Disputes In Nebraska, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Ideally, neighbors can agree between themselves on most fencing issues. If they do not, Nebraska Division Fence Statutes provide a legal process for resolving fence disputes. A recent Cornhusker Economics Newsletter (June 2, 2010), discussed the 2010 requirement that splits the cost of a wire division fence 50-50 between neighbors, and also the history of the Nebraska Division Fence Statutes. This newsletter discusses the process for resolving fencing disagreements in Nebraska.

"How Did Toyota Stay On Top?" Revisiting Crisis Communication Discourse, Rachel Marie Knoespel Apr 2011

"How Did Toyota Stay On Top?" Revisiting Crisis Communication Discourse, Rachel Marie Knoespel

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This study focuses on Toyota's 2010 accelerator pedal recalls and its use of crisis response strategies that relied on past performance. As a precursor, the author researched current literature regarding crisis communication and identified two key areas of research: understanding crisis and its impact and crisis response. To understand crisis communication it is necessary to first define a crisis and the impact it has on an organization's image, identity, and/or reputation. Once the crisis occurs, the organization must respond considering the audience, type of crisis, and the phase of the life cycle the crisis is in to determine a proper …

Perceived Reality Of Images Of Women In Magazines, Valerie Kretz Apr 2011

Perceived Reality Of Images Of Women In Magazines, Valerie Kretz

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Researchers have posited for decades that media, and magazines in particular, have a negative impact on women's body satisfaction. However, that relationship is a complex one. Several theories, including sociocultural and social comparison theories, have been used to better understand the relationship.

Furthermore, with advances in technology, magazine images of women are now fictional portrayals rather than reflections of reality. This project addresses the question of the extent to which women perceive magazine images to be real and whether there is a relationship between that perception of reality and body satisfaction.

Perceived reality as it relates to magazine images is …

Consulting Social Media In The College Transition Process: Experiential Accounts Of The Class Of 2014, Amanda Stageman Apr 2011

Consulting Social Media In The College Transition Process: Experiential Accounts Of The Class Of 2014, Amanda Stageman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This study examines social media as a relevant marketing strategy for higher education institutions and seeks to better understand how incoming university students utilize social media to communicate with an academic institution and ultimately make a college attendance decision. A basic history of social networking websites is explored, with emphasis on how this new technology is used in public relations and marketing for non-profit organizations, such as colleges and universities. In order to understand social media use from the students' perspective, individual uses of social networking sites are examined through the lenses of uses and gratifications theory, online identity construction …

Emotional Responses To Gender-Based Inequality: Justifications And Consequences, Erin Quasney Apr 2011

Emotional Responses To Gender-Based Inequality: Justifications And Consequences, Erin Quasney

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This paper examines the interaction between exposure to gender inequality and commonly-held sexist beliefs and effects on participants' emotional reactions and behavioral intentions to address that inequality. Male and female participants were exposed to gender disparities where women are disadvantaged or to a control condition and then primed with hostile or benevolent sexism. No difference existed in men's reports of guilt in response to gender inequality if offered a benevolently sexist justification. Women were more likely than men to report moral outrage, although the difference was larger when participants also considered female disadvantage. When reminded of both gender inequality and …

Bridging The Governance Deficit, Ishrat Husain Dr. Apr 2011

Bridging The Governance Deficit, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

There is almost a consensus that Pakistan suffers badly from weak institutions and poor governance. However, there is a very little substantive discussion as to what must be done to bridge this governance deficit. Very few people are aware that a comprehensive agenda of reforms was developed three years ago. This agenda needs to be debated, agreed at the political level and then implemented.

What are the essential ingredients of this agenda? First, the civil service system is to be revamped so that individuals of high professional calibre and integrity are attracted, motivated and retained. This can be accomplished through …

Migration, Community, And Stereotype: Shaping Racial Space In The Twentieth-Century Urban West, Stefani Evans Apr 2011

Migration, Community, And Stereotype: Shaping Racial Space In The Twentieth-Century Urban West, Stefani Evans

Psi Sigma Siren

African Americans who migrated to western cities in the twentieth century encountered a polyglot mix of Euro Americans, Asians, Latinos, and Native Americans. Diverse western populations dictated that western racial contests over space and power would evolve differently from those in the North or the South. This paper examines the discourse on white, Latino and African American racial landscapes in western cities through themes of migration, community formation, and white stereotypes and community responses to those stereotypes in seven key monographs and two articles published between 1993 and 2005.

Price Ceilings And Rationing: The Base Ingredients Of The Black Market Food Industry In Nevada During World War Ii, Richard B. Keeton Apr 2011

Price Ceilings And Rationing: The Base Ingredients Of The Black Market Food Industry In Nevada During World War Ii, Richard B. Keeton

Psi Sigma Siren

After the Empire of Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Americans braced themselves for what would surely be a long, hard-fought war. In World War II, brave young United States soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice across the seas on both the European and Pacific fronts. However, the millions of citizens on domestic soil also made countless sacrifices in a national mobilization to support the war effort. People in Nevada and across the nation gave up everyday conveniences and seemingly ordinary items to show their support for the troops. Government agencies instituted tight rationing guidelines on a variety of consumer goods. Perhaps the …

The Externalities Of Strong Social Capital: Post-Tsunami Recovery In Southeast India, Daniel P. Aldrich Apr 2011

The Externalities Of Strong Social Capital: Post-Tsunami Recovery In Southeast India, Daniel P. Aldrich

Department of Political Science Faculty Publications

Much research has implied that social capital functions as an unqualified “public good,” enhancing governance, economic performance, and quality of life (Coleman 1988; Cohen and Arato 1992; Putnam 1993; Cohen and Rogers 1995). Scholars of disaster (Nakagawa and Shaw 2004; Adger et al. 2005; Dynes 2005; Tatsuki 2008) have extended this concept to posit that social capital provides nonexcludable benefits to whole communities after major crises. Using qualitative methods to analyze data from villages in Tamil Nadu, India following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, this paper demonstrates that high levels of social capital simultaneously provided strong benefits and equally strong …
