Pay-For-Performance For Missouri Public Schools: Are We Ready Yet?, Dustin K. Procter

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Reform strategies in education have been administered far and wide all throughout history. Ideas such as longer school days, school choice, standardized testing, and changes to teachers’ salaries have all been studied and incorporated. Reform directives in education have been implemented from the national level all the way down to the individual teacher. The goal of these actions has been to improve the success of children in public education by way of increasing student test scores on standardized tests. However, these measures have all exhibited inconsistent results.

This paper focuses on the public education system of the State of Missouri …

Modeling Teacher Ratings Of Online Resources: A Human-Machine Approach To Quality, Mimi Recker, Heather Leary, Andrew Walker, Anne R. Diekama, Philipp Wetzler, Tamara Sumner, James Martin

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In education, the scalable deployment of media-rich online resources supports peer production in ways that promise to radically transform teaching and learning (CRA, 2005; Pea et al., 2008). Online educational repositories such as the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (DLESE.org) and the National Science Digital Library (NSDL.org) collect and curate online learning resources created for a wide range of educational audiences and subject areas (McArthur & Zia, 2008). Through a simple, web-based authoring tool, called the Instructional Architect (IA.usu.edu) teachers locate and share educational resources and activities in an IA project. These IA projects can then be viewed, copied, …

Affective, Behavioral, And Social-Cognitive Dysregulation As Mechanisms For Sexual Abuse Revictimization, Catherine Lutz-Zois, Carolyn E. Roecker Phelps, Adam Charles Reichle Apr 2011

Affective, Behavioral, And Social-Cognitive Dysregulation As Mechanisms For Sexual Abuse Revictimization, Catherine Lutz-Zois, Carolyn E. Roecker Phelps, Adam Charles Reichle

Psychology Faculty Publications

Using a sample of 1,117 female college students, this study examined emotional, behavioral, and social-cognitive mechanisms of sexual abuse revictimization. It was hypothesized that numbing, alexithymia, alcohol problems, mistrust, and adult attachment dimensions would mediate the relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adult sexual abuse (ASA). Aside from the close adult attachment dimension, the results indicated that all of the hypothesized mediators were associated with CSA. However, only alcohol problems and mistrust met the necessary conditions of mediation. The results with respect to mistrust are especially unique in that it is one of the first empirical demonstrations of a …

Asking For Permission: A Survey Of Copyright Workflows For Institutional Repositories, Ann Hanlon, Marisa Ramirez Apr 2011

Asking For Permission: A Survey Of Copyright Workflows For Institutional Repositories, Ann Hanlon, Marisa Ramirez

Library Scholarship

An online survey of institutional repository (IR) managers identified copyright clearance trends in staffing and workflows. The majority of respondents followed a mediated deposit model, and reported that library personnel, instead of authors, engaged in copyright clearance activities for IRs. The most common “information gaps” pertained to the breadth of information in copyright directories like SHERPA/RoMEO. To fill these gaps, most respondents directly contacted publishers for permissions. Respondents typically did not share publisher responses with other IRs, citing barriers such as time, expertise, staffing, and the need for improved methods for sharing data
with copyright directories.

Are Risk Preferences Stable Across Contexts? Evidence From Insurance Data, Levon Barseghyan, Jeffrey Prince, Joshua C. Teitelbaum Apr 2011

Are Risk Preferences Stable Across Contexts? Evidence From Insurance Data, Levon Barseghyan, Jeffrey Prince, Joshua C. Teitelbaum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Using a unique data set, the authors test whether households' deductible choices in auto and home insurance reflect stable risk preferences. Their test relies on a structural model that assumes households are objective expected utility maximizers and claims are generated by household-coverage specific Poisson processes. They find that the hypothesis of stable risk preferences is rejected by the data. Their analysis suggests that many households exhibit greater risk aversion in their home deductible choices than their auto deductible choices. They find that their results are robust to several alternative modeling assumptions.

Analysis Of Carbon Capture And Sequestration Pore Space Legislation: A Review Of Existing And Possible Regimes, Elizabeth L. Aldrich, Cassandra Koerner Apr 2011

Analysis Of Carbon Capture And Sequestration Pore Space Legislation: A Review Of Existing And Possible Regimes, Elizabeth L. Aldrich, Cassandra Koerner

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Liability coverage for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is of paramount importance if the industry is going to mature and develop in a way that will allow it to make a significant contribution to mitigating climate change. Liability for CCS can be broken into two phases – short-term, which covers the pre-injection, injection, and closure stages of the project, and long-term, which covers the post-closure stage. Since pre-injection, injection, and closure occur over a relatively short period of time that may cover 20-30 years, typical liability instruments like private insurance, letters of credit, performance bonds, trust funds, and escrow accounts …

Economic Freedom And Fiscal Performance: A Regression Analysis Of Indices Of Economic Freedom On Per Capita Gdp, Jason R. Ockey Apr 2011

Economic Freedom And Fiscal Performance: A Regression Analysis Of Indices Of Economic Freedom On Per Capita Gdp, Jason R. Ockey

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper explores whether different forms of economic freedom drive fiscal performance. We also seek to determine which specific measurements of economic freedom have the most statistically significant impacts. Though the results of our analysis show that economic freedom does impact levels of per capita GDP, the interpretation of these results is more complicated. Because some indices of economic freedom have negative effects on per capita GDP or are statistically insignificant, it is important to note that simply generally increasing a country’s overall level of economic freedom will not necessarily spur economic growth or increase fiscal performance. This paper does …

Evaluation Of Dutch Support To Danish Demining Group In Afghanistan, Somaliland, And Sudan, Vera Bohle, Mohamed Ayan Handulle, Charles Lor, Ted Paterson, Mohammad Hamid Wardak, Anna Wood

Global CWD Repository

On 31 August 2007 the Netherlands Government (NG) decided to fund the Danish Demining Group (DDG) mine action activities in Somaliland, Sudan, and Afghanistan. The funding agreement runs from January 2008 to December 2011 and NG and DDG had preliminary discussions on the continuation of the project. The NG Decision of 31 August 2007 foresees an external evaluation initiated by the grant recipient.

The purpose of this evaluation is two-fold: (1) to evaluate progress towards objectives, thus contributing to improving the programme through documenting lessons learned and providing recommendations; and (2) to evaluate and inform NG and DDG on project …

Central Oregon, Metropolitan Portland Are State’S Fastest-Growing Areas, Jason R. Jurjevich Apr 2011

Central Oregon, Metropolitan Portland Are State’S Fastest-Growing Areas, Jason R. Jurjevich

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Population grew in all regions of Oregon between 2000 and 2010, and the proportion of Oregonians living in the three-county metropolitan Portland region inched up to nearly 43 percent, according to newly released U.S. Census Bureau data. Central Oregon grew by 30.5 percent during the decade — the fastest growth rate of any region of the state. By 2010, about 5.2 percent of Oregon residents, or just over 200,000 people, lived in the area composed of Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties (Table 1). The three-county Portland metro region grew 13.6 percent during the decade, the second-fastest rate of growth in …

Late-Pleistocene And Holocene Obsidian Transfer In The Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Matthew C. Leavesley, Caroline Read Apr 2011

Late-Pleistocene And Holocene Obsidian Transfer In The Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Matthew C. Leavesley, Caroline Read

Pacific Studies

Obsidian analysis allows for archaeologists to investigate notions of trade and exchange over vast areas of land and sea. Here we report the results of Particle Induced X-ray Emission-Particle Induced Gamma-Ray Emission analysis undertaken on obsidian excavated from Buang Merabak, a Pleistocene cave site in central New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. Although the dataset is relatively small, it provides new information reflecting cultural connectivity as early as 20,000 (uncalib) bp. Also, it provides a valuable opportunity to re-evaluate some pre-existing models of trade and exchange. The data support the notion that there may have been more than one trade/exchange network …

Monetization And Tradition: Cash And Conciliation In Contemporary Samoa, Cluny Macpherson, LaʻAvasa Macpherson

Pacific Studies

This article explores the evolving role of cash in Samoan ceremonial traditions, where it is increasingly used alongside or in place of traditional symbolic goods. While the integration of cash into ceremonies has been relatively seamless, its use in more culturally sensitive rituals has proven problematic. The paper examines how these changes challenge the traditional social variables of contemporary Samoa.

The Politics Of Mate Choice, John R. Alford, Peter K. Hatemi, John Hibbing, Nicholas G. Martin, Lindon J. Eaves

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Recent research has found a surprising degree of homogeneity in the personal political communication network of individuals but this work has focused largely on the tendency to sort into likeminded social, workplace, and residential political contexts. We extend this line of research into one of the most fundamental and consequential of political interactions—that between sexual mates. Using data on thousands of spouse pairs in the United States, we investigate the degree of concordance among mates on a variety of traits. Our findings show that physical and personality traits display only weakly positive and frequently insignificant correlations across spouses. Conversely, political …

Students Of Indian Heritage And United States Citizen Students' Adaptation Of College, Opinions About Mental Illness And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Counseling Help, Margaret Omotola Ajayi-Nabors

Dissertations

The present study replicated Baysden's (2002) multi-component model and tested its generalizability on a homogeneous demographic group. This study compared international college students from India (n 0 244) and U.S. student participants (n 0 393) on their adaptation to college, their opinions about mental illness, and their attitudes regarding their professional psychological help-seeking behavior. A structural regression model was utilized to examine if student origin influenced opinions about mental illness, student adaptation to college, and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. /// The findings of this project supported Baysden's (2002) multi-component model to understanding international students' use of counseling. Implementation Of The 2009 Cacrep Standards Addiction Competencies, Tiffany K. Lee

Addiction issues have been and continue to be significant problems affecting the United States. Over the past few decades, substantial scholarly attention has been paid to the lack of addictions training in the counseling profession. The purposes of this mixed-method study were to examine the current status of addiction training among institutions that offer counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and determine how institutions plan to integrate the addiction-related competencies outlined in the 2009 CACREP standards.

The quantitative data were obtained from a 15-item online survey completed by 74 CACREP …

From Both Sides Now: A Recently-Hired Librarian And A Library Veteran Respond To The Loss Of A Favorite Database, Harry D. Nuttall, Carley Knight

The Southeastern Librarian

The last three decades, and especially the last fifteen years, have seen an expansion in the formats in which library materials are available, as electronic resources have joined the traditional print offerings produced by library suppliers. More and more, the electronic resource is becoming the first stop “go-to” information source, a predominance which can be confirmed by the number of reference and other sources which have shifted from print to electronic format or, not making the change, have simply ceased to exist.

This paradigm shift has affected acquisitions departments and collection development librarians, particularly in academic libraries, as they now …

Of Fairs And Festivals: Librarians Teach Thematic First-Year Seminars, Donna Braquet, Micheline Westfall

The Southeastern Librarian

For almost a century, library skills instruction by academic librarians has been a vital component of university programs created to help first-year students adapt to the social and academic environment of college life (Walter, 2004). Asretention of first-year students has become a strategic goal for universities, a variety of firstyear experience (FYE) programs have been developed over the last decade to address this goal. For many academic librarians, the FYE programs have resulted in an increased collaboration with faculty (Walter, 2004). This collaboration ranges from assisting faculty with incorporating information literacy skills within classroom instruction to embedding librarians within classes …
