Competition For Trophies Triggers Male Generosity, Xiaofei Sophia Pan, Daniel E. Houser Apr 2011

Competition For Trophies Triggers Male Generosity, Xiaofei Sophia Pan, Daniel E. Houser

Economics Faculty Journal Articles

Background

Cooperation is indispensable in human societies, and much progress has been made towards understanding human pro-social decisions. Formal incentives, such as punishment, are suggested as potential effective approaches despite the fact that punishment can crowd out intrinsic motives for cooperation and detrimentally impact efficiency. At the same time, evolutionary biologists have long recognized that cooperation, especially food sharing, is typically efficiently organized in groups living on wild foods, even absent formal economic incentives. Despite its evident importance, the source of this voluntary compliance remains largely uninformed. Drawing on costly signaling theory, and in light of the widely established competitive …

Approaches To Marketing An Institutional Repository To Campus, Marisa L. Ramirez, Michael D. Miller

Library Scholarship

Marketing is an activity that is integral to the growth and use of a campus
institutional repository (IR). But what kinds of marketing activities
do libraries engage in to advertise the new services associated
with an IR? This chapter summarizes basic marketing principles and describes
the application of those principles as they relate to marketing an institutional
repository within a higher education setting.

Violations Of The Divine: Forgiveness Of Ingroup Transgressors Within Church Congregations Of The Christian Faith, Chelsea Greer Apr 2011

Violations Of The Divine: Forgiveness Of Ingroup Transgressors Within Church Congregations Of The Christian Faith, Chelsea Greer

Theses and Dissertations

Research on forgiveness has been expanding rapidly in the last decade with a subset of studies looking at how religious people forgive. A discrepancy persists between Christians’ level of valuing forgiveness and forgiveness of actual transgressions. Several methodological issues and offense-specific variables have been presented as explanations. This present thesis examines the role of the congregation as a group identity, and applies it to a theory of relational spirituality, as a measure of the relationship between a victim and the Sacred. No existing research has polled congregants about offense-specific forgiveness of church peers. I collected data from members of Christian …

Brain Mechanisms Supporting The Modulation Of Pain By Mindfulness Meditation, Fadel Zeidan, Katherine Martucci, Robert Kraft, Nakia S. Gordon, John Mchaffie, Robert Coghill Apr 2011

Brain Mechanisms Supporting The Modulation Of Pain By Mindfulness Meditation, Fadel Zeidan, Katherine Martucci, Robert Kraft, Nakia S. Gordon, John Mchaffie, Robert Coghill

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The subjective experience of one’s environment is constructed by interactions among sensory, cognitive, and affective processes. For centuries, meditation has been thought to influence such processes by enabling a nonevaluative representation of sensory events. To better understand how meditation influences the sensory experience, we used arterial spin labeling functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the neural mechanisms by which mindfulness meditation influences pain in healthy human participants. After 4 d of mindfulness meditation training, meditating in the presence of noxious stimulation significantly reduced pain unpleasantness by 57% and pain intensity ratings by 40% when compared to rest. A two-factor repeated-measures …

Molecular Correlates Of Social Dominance: A Novel Role For Ependymin In Aggression, Lynne U. Sneddon, Rupert Schmidt, Yongxiang Fang, Andrew R. Cossins Apr 2011

Molecular Correlates Of Social Dominance: A Novel Role For Ependymin In Aggression, Lynne U. Sneddon, Rupert Schmidt, Yongxiang Fang, Andrew R. Cossins

Ethology Collection

Theoretical and empirical studies have sought to explain the formation and maintenance of social relationships within groups. The resulting dominance hierarchies have significant fitness and survival consequences dependent upon social status. We hypothesised that each position or rank within a group has a distinctive brain gene expression profile that correlates with behavioural phenotype. Furthermore, transitions in rank position should determine which genes shift in expression concurrent with the new dominance status. We used a custom cDNA microarray to profile brain transcript expression in a model species, the rainbow trout, which forms tractable linear hierarchies. Dominant, subdominant and submissive individuals had …

Development And Validation Of The Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale, Marina Bornovalova, Brian M Hicks, Christopher J. Patrick, William G Iacono, Matt Mcgue Apr 2011

Development And Validation Of The Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale, Marina Bornovalova, Brian M Hicks, Christopher J. Patrick, William G Iacono, Matt Mcgue

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although large epidemiological data sets can inform research on the etiology and development of borderline personality disorder (BPD), they rarely include BPD measures. In some cases, however, proxy measures can be constructed using instruments already in these data sets. In this study, the authors developed and validated a self-report measure of BPD from the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Items for the new instrument—the Minnesota BPD scale (MBPD) —were identified and refined using three large samples: undergraduates, community adolescent twins, and urban substance users. The authors determined the construct validity of the MBPD scale by examining its association with (a) diagnosed …

Opening The System: (Re)Writing Value Theory Discursively, David Kristjanson-Gural Apr 2011

Opening The System: (Re)Writing Value Theory Discursively, David Kristjanson-Gural

Faculty Journal Articles

In this article I argue that modern and postmodern critics of value theory share the premise that Marx’s theory of value disables the project of emancipatory social change. The modern critics claim the theory is logically flawed and must be either resituated in a consistent logical framework or replaced by a Sraffian alternative. The postmodern critics claim that the theory is necessarily reductionist and excludes or renders secondary important axes of social struggle. I argue that by using a poststructural logic, Marx’s theory of value can be interpreted in a way that both overcomes the perceived consistencies of the modern …

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes Apr 2011

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes

Honors Theses

Starting in the 1980s, Latin American immigration in the United States began undergoing a series of significant adaptations in response to changing government policies and economic relocation trends. A widespread shift toward permanent settlement alongside significant economic restructuring and growth in the Southeast opened the door for many low-skill workers in nontraditional settlement areas, especially in the Southeast. Chattanooga, Tennessee, has participated in this process and demonstrates certain peculiarities, particularly in regards to its large number of Guatemalan immigrants. Characterized by a unique culture, history, and family of languages, these Guatemalans' powerful stories remain untold largely due to language barriers …

Longitudinal Changes In The Corpus Callosum Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury As Assessed By Volumetric Mri And Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Trevor Chuang Kuo Wu Apr 2011

Longitudinal Changes In The Corpus Callosum Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury As Assessed By Volumetric Mri And Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Trevor Chuang Kuo Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Atrophy of the corpus callosum (CC) is a documented consequence of moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), which has been expressed as volume loss using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Other advanced imaging modalities such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have also detected white matter microstructural alteration following TBI in the CC. The manner and degree to which macrostructural changes such as volume and microstructural changes develop over time following pediatric TBI and their relation to a measure of processing speed is the focus of this longitudinal investigation. As such, DTI and volumetric changes of the CC in participants with TBI …
