Dynamic Decision Making And Race Games, Shipra De
Dynamic Decision Making And Race Games, Shipra De
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
Frequent criticism in dynamic decision making research pertains to the overly complex nature of the decision tasks used in experimentation. To address such concerns we study dynamic decision making with respect to the simple race game Hog, which has a computable optimal decision strategy. In the two-player game of Hog, individuals compete to be the first to reach a designated threshold of points. Players alternate rolling a desired quantity of dice. If the number one appears on any of the dice, the player receives no points for his turn; otherwise, the sum of the numbers appearing on the dice is …

Expectations, Fears, And Strategies: Juvenile Offender Thoughts On A Future Outside Of Incarceration, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Trusty Zohra
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The current article explores the possible selves, or future expectations, of 543 incarcerated juvenile offenders in four Western states in the United States. We argue that juveniles who are able to articulate future expectations and fears and generate concrete strategies for achieving their goals have higher levels of motivational capital (i.e., resources which provide momentum for behavior) and thus greater readiness for transitioning back into society. We found that a majority of juveniles were able to articulate simple expectations about the future; however, less than a quarter recognized the relationship between hopes and fears and connected them to concrete strategies. …

What Triple Jeopardy? : Clinical Implications For Working With African American Queer Women : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Tharyn Giovanni Grant
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explores the impact on multiple identities on African American queer women's mental health. Its purpose is to understand how intersectionality and relational-cultural theory can inform therapeutic treatment by addressing these issues in clinical social work practice. This study is a review of an extensive range of psychosocial literature that employs multiculturalism, feminist, relational, and psychodynamic practices with people of color in order to understand issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality at the micro individual level—and the related power systems of racism, classism, sexism, and heterosexism at the macro sociocultural level. Through the examination of this literature, …

Sedimentation Of Depression : An Exploration Of Depression Through Attachment Theory And Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology Of Perception : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Senka Salatic-Ewing
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explores how attachment theory and Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception could enrich our understanding of the phenomenon of depression. The study was undertaken as an effort towards clarification of how the psychodynamic training that I received could be more strength based and less pathologizing in my future work with those who suffer from chronic forms of depression. Each separate theory, attachment theory and phenomenology, focuses on the impact of relationships. Whereas, attachment theory primarily focuses on the early primary relationships with attachment figures, phenomenology explores the impact of all relationships in the person's environment. Who we are and …

Giving Up On Giving Up : Stories Of People Who Were Previously Suicidal : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Tricia Ann Fitzgerald
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores the role of hope and spirituality in those lives of people who were previously suicidal. Eight formerly suicidal women were asked a series of questions regarding their suicidal ideation, their suicidal belief system, suicidal behavior, and their thoughts on the role of hope and spirituality in their lives. Participants' answers revealed the strength these women have. Major findings suggest that hope and spirituality play a huge role in helping people through desperate times. Almost all but one of the participants said that hope gave them the inspiration to carry on. The one person who said she …

On March 4, 2011, Jacob Tucker, a senior at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois, uploaded a two-minute and fourteen-second video of him dunking on youtube in the hopes that he would be considered to receive an invitation to the annual NCAA dunk contest. Within a few days, the video was posted on facebook, linked on Twitter, and talked about on “Rome is Burning,” Jim Rome’s ESPN show. By March 9, the video had over one million views and earned Tucker the chance to be voted into the dunk contest. Soon afterward, the NCAA announced that it would have a competition …

It is not hard to find English spoken in France. Amid the blue and white signs announcing different RER lines in the Paris metro, one announces: “RER A: Destination Dreams,” pointing the way to EuroDisney. Behind the lines of waiting passengers, billboards hang against the white-tiled walls. An advertising campaign for a French car maker announces a “Baby Boom chez Renault,” two well-known French soccer players pose in Nike track jackets next to the words “V is for Victory. By Claude Makele and Hatem Ben Arfa,” and a fruit juice company promises “Happy Fruit Moments,” recommending “Remixez votre After Work.” …

The idea for this play was first hatched in June of 2010. It was summer in Greencastle and with no cable TV and no air-conditioning my roommate and I found the time for many heated, interesting discussions. My roommate was a particularly enterprising individual; his goal was to start a business on the town square, open a convenience store that would tap into Greencastle’s largest market: the DePauw students. Greencastle is a veritable ghost town in the summer. The discussions with my roommate often centered on the topic of this abandonment Greencastle undergoes every May of every year, and the …

Marathon: From Myth To The Modern Era, Alana Dewitt '11
Honor Scholar Theses
The marathon race has been subject to a history spanning over two thousand years. From the first alleged run of the marathon, performed during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, marathons have fascinated thousands; however, despite strong interest in the topic today, during the Middle Ages there was a time when the marathon was barely discussed. Since antiquity athletes have been honored in stone, in verse, and possibly even in the decorative frieze of the Parthenon. In our modern age all types of runners – beginners to elites – run marathons on every continent covering the planet. Motivations of …

Coal Mining, Masculinity And Meth: The Development Of Appalachia And Its Modern Crisis, Kerry Hobson '11
Honor Scholar Theses
The central Appalachian region, encompassing West Virginia and most of Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee, is a region filled with contradictions. It has one of the richest endowments of natural resources, yet twenty percent of families live in poverty. Safe drinking water is an issue in Appalachia, and one-fifth of Appalachian counties do not even have a hospital. Furthermore, the very identity of the Appalachian people has been continuously misrepresented and oversimplified. Throughout the twentieth century, the image of a toothless, uneducated hillbilly has persisted as the typical Appalachian. Stereotypes can certainly be a useful way to categorize information and understand …

Putnam County Through The Lens: Creating Community With Art, Caroline Murphy '11
Honor Scholar Theses
Putnam County Through the Lens is a photography-based, community art exhibit featured at the Putnam County Museum, which focuses on the images of seven dedicated residents of Putnam County, who were each loaned a digital camera and asked to photograph their lives, their homes, their community. I wished for each participant to present Putnam County as they see and live it. I hope that the photographers, the audience, and myself became or will become better acquainted with this community through the images, finding familiar faces and places, as well as discovering the unknown, perhaps intriguing the viewers to make them …
Levels Of Response In Experiential Conceptualizations Of Neighborhood: The Potential For Multiple Versions Of This Place Construct, Cynthia M. Williams
Levels Of Response In Experiential Conceptualizations Of Neighborhood: The Potential For Multiple Versions Of This Place Construct, Cynthia M. Williams
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the literature, numerous theoretical perspectives have defined and interpreted what is meant by “neighborhood.” A criticism of these perspectives is a lack of a universal definition, with no one-to-one empirical counterpart. The intent of this dissertation is to develop experiential conceptualizations of the construct neighborhood. Residents, those who experience and interact on a daily bases will provide the meaning and interpretation of what is meant by neighborhood.
The “levels of response” are the means of identifying and interpreting the systematic differences in the cognitive processing involved in the construal of neighborhood. Five cognitive levels of response were identified: Affective, …

Catastrophe Models For Cognitive Workload And Fatigue, Stephen J. Guastello, Henry Boeh, Curt Shumaker, Michael Schimmels
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
We reconceptualised several problems concerning the measurement of cognitive workload – fixed versus variable limits on channel capacity, work volume versus time pressure, adaptive strategies, resources demanded by tasks when performed simultaneously, and unclear distinctions between workload and fatigue effects – as two cusp catastrophe models: buckling stress resulting from acute workload, and fatigue resulting from extended engagement. Experimental participants completed a task that was intensive on non-verbal episodic memory and had an automatically speeded component. For buckling stress, the epoch of maximum (speeded) performance was the asymmetry parameter; however, anxiety did not contribute to bifurcation as expected. For fatigue, …

Latin American Borderlands: Exploring The Favelas Of Rio De Janeiro, Lindsey K. Dodd
Undergraduate Research Conference
Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and holds a great amount of the country's new-found wealth gained from the many offshore oil and gas fields that have been discovered over the last fifteen years. It has also been a major point of international discussion in recent months as the world anticipates the 2012 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, both to be held in Rio de Janeiro. However, in the midst of such excitement and economic growth, this city is also home to hundreds of illegal tenement settlements known as favelas. Many of the Brazilians who …

The Best Reporter In America, Cameron Mebane
Undergraduate Research Conference
This research looks at the life of the infamous Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochran, a woman reporter in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She was one of the pioneers of “stunt” journalism, a form of reporting reliant upon thorough investigation. Her first big feat during her career was feigning insanity to be committed to a women's insane asylum in order to write an article on the terrible living conditions there. The feat for which she is best known however, was her trip around the world in less time than anyone else at the time. This research seeks to …
