Geography and the Environment Poster Presentations

The Role Of Modality And Figurativeness On Semantic Processing: An N400 Study, Stephen Agauas, Elizabeth Miller Apr 2011

The Role Of Modality And Figurativeness On Semantic Processing: An N400 Study, Stephen Agauas, Elizabeth Miller

10th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2011)

It has been observed that words depicting actions (“jump”) produce activation of the primary motor cortex or motion processing regions of the brain in addition to language areas. Thus the first aim of current study was to investigate whether the modality of words (motion “skydive” versus auditory “babble”) would have an effect on the brain processes underlying semantic processing. Secondly, some studies have observed that the neural substrate for the semantic processing of figurative language may be different than for literal language; however, results are conflicting. We suggest this is because of the many confounds in existing studies comparing literal …

The Milk And Medicine Program Evaluation: Lusaka, Zambia, Lindsey Boeve

10th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2011)

The HIV and AIDS epidemic is sweeping through Zambia, Africa at an unsettling rate. This epidemic plays a dramatic part in the increase of orphans and vulnerable children. The Christian Alliance for Children in Zambia (CACZ), a faith-based, non-governmental organization implemented its Milk and Medicine Program in 2004. CACZ’s goal is, “to improve child health and strengthen families to prevent child abandonment and institutionalization.” The program distributes nutritional supplements, medicine and limited social work support for those involved in the program. It has served approximately 300 children since its inception. This research seeks to understand the efficacy of the Milk …

Uncertainty And Producer Fed Cattle Marketing Decisions: Theory And Evidence, Scott Fausti, Brent Lange Apr 2011

Uncertainty And Producer Fed Cattle Marketing Decisions: Theory And Evidence, Scott Fausti, Brent Lange

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The effect of carcass quality uncertainty on the structure of the slaughter cattle market is investigated. A theoretical extension of the “Theory of Factor Price Disparity” is provided. It is demonstrated that the coexistence of a risk premium wedge between pricing mechanisms (live wt., dressed wt., and grid) in conjunction with varying degrees of risk aversion across fed cattle producers explains the coexistence of multiple pricing mechanisms. It is also demonstrated that risk and risk preference provides a plausible explanation for the structure of the fed cattle market and for the variability in slaughter volume across marketing channels. Empirical evidence …

Self-Adaptors And Gaze Aversion: Cues Of Deception In Culturally Deaf College Students, Grady Matthew Gallagher Apr 2011

Self-Adaptors And Gaze Aversion: Cues Of Deception In Culturally Deaf College Students, Grady Matthew Gallagher

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This study examines the impact of deception on gaze aversion and self-adaptors among culturally Deaf college students. Sixteen participants were randomly assigned to either truth telling scenarios or deceptive scenarios. Telling the truth or a lie did not have a significant effect on the rate of gaze aversion. However, among all subjects, regardless of whether they told the truth or lied, the rate of gaze aversion more than doubled when the confederate directly questioned them about the test answers. Deception had no effect on the rate of self-adaptors among subjects and between groups. These findings indicate that self-adaptors are not …

Our collections' unique holdings can make the greatest impact to scholarship, and yet our special collections often suffer from a lack of staff expertise to preserve and describe unusual formats. An experienced special collections cataloger and a special collections librarian will share the basics of standards-based cataloging and preservation of these formats. Program will include hands-on practice with creating a metadata record for a manuscript and a photograph collection (with attention paid to perceived impact of RDA).

Systems Views Of The Economics Of Sustainable Development, Joshua Hughes Apr 2011

Systems Views Of The Economics Of Sustainable Development, Joshua Hughes

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

The mainstream economics of the 20th century (and now 21st century) has often failed to predict what will happen--or explain what has happened--in the real world, even with (or because of?) an ever-increasing reliance on quantitative and computational methods. Since the mid-20th century a number of people part of, or closely associated with, the systems community--economists among them--have provided insights about what is wrong with "traditional" economics. Systems science offers a number of alternative methods for understanding economic systems that take heed of these criticisms, especially in the context of sustainable development. Yet, while promising, few of these alternatives …

Tourism Research As "Global Ethnography", Michael A. Di Giovine Apr 2011

Tourism Research As "Global Ethnography", Michael A. Di Giovine

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Tourism is a topic that has traditionally been treated with great ambivalence in anthropology, particularly compared to related issues such mobility and globalization. This is certainly curious considering that tourism continues to be the largest and fastest-growing industry in the world, even in the post-9/11 environment of terrorism fears and economic recession. This may explain why business schools, hospitality departments and management programs—particularly those outside of the United States—have embraced tourism studies, but it does not explain its relative neglect by, for example, economic anthropologists and others who are concerned with global flows of money, peoples, or information. (To be …

Geography and the Environment Poster Presentations

On June 5th 2009, an estimated thirty people died in a clash between governmental authorities and indigenous people near Bagua, Peru. Termed the "Bagua Massacre," this event underscores the marginalized role of Indigenous Amazonians when confronting multinational commercial interests supported by the state (Shepard, 2009). The indigenous people were protesting the “Law of the Jungle,” Decree 1090, a 2009 decree assuming heavily-forested indigenous lands idle and unproductive, and providing the legal basis to privatize comunally-held forests to facilitate petroleum, biofuel, hydroelectric and logging projects. Since contact, the assumption of indigenous people unproductively managing their forested homelands has fueled colonization, deforestation, …

Do Body Image And Gender Role Attitudes Mediate The Relationship Between Media Exposure And Sexual Risk Behavior In College Students?, Vivian Rodriguez Apr 2011

Do Body Image And Gender Role Attitudes Mediate The Relationship Between Media Exposure And Sexual Risk Behavior In College Students?, Vivian Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

Despite growing awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and educational efforts to provide accurate information about sexually transmitted diseases (STD), young adults continue to engage in risky sexual practices that increase their vulnerability of acquiring an STD, including inconsistent condom use. Research has gathered ample evidence to suggest that the media, in particular television consumption, is directly linked with sexual risk, yet less is known about the potential mechanisms that may be driving this link. The present study examines body image and gender role attitudes as two potential mediators of this relationship. Three-hundred and four undergraduate students (73% female; 64% White) …

Comparing Deaf Native Signers And Deaf Early Signers With Respect To Phonological Perception, Ian Deandrea-Lazarus Apr 2011

Comparing Deaf Native Signers And Deaf Early Signers With Respect To Phonological Perception, Ian Deandrea-Lazarus

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Common criteria for a native ASL signer include exposure to ASL from birth and having Deaf parents. This study questions the necessity of the second criterion by comparing two groups: 16 Deaf adults with Deaf parents and exposed to ASL from birth, and 16 Deaf adults with hearing parents and exposed to ASL before age two. All determined whether pairs of pseudosigns, sometimes differing in phonological details, matched. The two groups did not differ significantly on accuracy, but the first group responded faster than the second group on average. These findings suggest processing differences between the two groups, but otherwise …

The Effects Of Revictimization On Coping And Depression In Female Sexual Assault Victims, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Sarah E. Ullman Apr 2011

The Effects Of Revictimization On Coping And Depression In Female Sexual Assault Victims, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Sarah E. Ullman

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

To examine the effects of being revictimized, 555 women completed 2 mail surveys 1 year apart, reporting their experiences of sexual assault, the strategies they used to cope with those experiences, and feelings of depression. Path analyses, controlling for baseline coping and depression, revealed that those who were revictimized during the study reported using more maladaptive and adaptive coping strategies than did those who were not revictimized (β = .11 and β = .16, respectively). Further, women who were revictimized reported more depression than others (β = .15). This effect was explained in part by revictimized women's increased maladaptive coping. …
