Decision-Making Techniques Used By Elected Officials, Michael Gordon Apr 2011

Decision-Making Techniques Used By Elected Officials, Michael Gordon

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Politicians often make decisions that lead to contradictory outcomes from situations with seemingly similar circumstances and related factors. Recent examples include the U.S. reaction to the uprising in Iran contrasted with the call for the ousting of president Hosni Mubarak after the 18 Day Revolution in Egypt.

This frustrating reality, frequently based on perceived risks of publication of state secrets, has various far-reaching effects. Two effects of this reality include the loss of trust in government and government officials to do the right thing as well as the frequency of market fluctuations.

Attachment And Couple Sexual Functioning, Kathryn Z. Devis, Melissa A. Louder, Kara L. Thompson, Katherine M. Hertlein

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Within the last several years, there has been a surge in the publications that focus on attachment within the couple relationships, including how it pertains to infidelity treatment. Despite the interest in couple relationships and attachment, however, a limited amount of literature focuses on how varying styles of attachment manifest in a couple's level of sexual functioning. This study is a response to the need to explore the literature and related gaps in literature.

Dark Matter Series, Barbara Ryan Apr 2011

Dark Matter Series, Barbara Ryan

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

The Dark Matter series explores my recent interest in the theories of dark matter, which is present in both the vast universe and microscopic DNA. Drawings, prints, paintings and jewelry forms are shaped out of simple repeated marks and relate to the unknown forms of dark matter which are thought to comprise up to 80% of the universe. Scratched, drawn, etched, painted and cast metal objects populate a space with and without gravity. Marks are often so small, they prove difficult to see in a singular sense and can be read only as a mass. Images and titles revolve around …

The 'Truthiness' Of The 'Daily Show Effect': A Presidency Study, Holly Thomas

2011 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

News-gathering for the American public changed in the past decade with a decline in trust for journalists and news media (Jones 2009), technology advancement (Haynes and Pitts 2009), and entertainment becoming a priority (Jones 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009; Baumgartner and Morris 2006; Colletta 2009). Television, radio, and newspapers (the traditional media) are still used today with broadcast and cable television being the dominate news source (Colletta 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009), however, an increased amount of Americans utilize the internet for their news information through what is known as new media, referring to Web blogs and social networks. Haynes …

Investment Styles, Fees, & Returns Among Individually Managed & Team Managed Mutual Funds, Kendal Cehanowicz Apr 2011

Investment Styles, Fees, & Returns Among Individually Managed & Team Managed Mutual Funds, Kendal Cehanowicz

Honors Projects in Finance

Identifying a successful mutual fund investment involves a crucial analysis of alternatives, all of which influence the true benefit of the investment. Major considerations must include performance, management and fees; which ultimately determine investment returns. Studies have shown that team managed mutual funds exhibit similar risk adjusted performance to individually managed mutual funds, however studies lack this comparison of performance based on fund fees and investment objective. This gap in research implies that there is an opportunity to examine how fund management, investment objective, and fund fees affect overall returns to the investor. Using the 2010 Center for Research in …

Exploring Identity Through Genetic And Genealogical Research: Development Of A Collaborative Course Between Humanities And Biology, James Doan, Emily F. Schmitt Lavin

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

In this paper, data from student projects completed in their HONR 1000N: Genetics and Genealogy course, taught during winter 2010, are presented. Students traced their deep ancestry through mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA analysis, as well as more recent ancestry, using genealogical databases and family histories. Frequently, students were challenged or pleasantly surprised by the information they gleaned. Genetic and genealogical research can provide clues to one’s identity and ethnic background, as well as potential medical conditions.

Medicare's Accountable Care Organization Regulations: How Will Medicare Beneficiaries Who Reside In Medically Underserved Communities Fare?, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

On March 31, 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released proposed regulations implementing the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP). The thrust of the MSSP is to promote savings to Medicare as well as the greater clinical integration of health care through incentive payments to accountable care organizations (ACOs) that meet Medicare standards for structure, performance, and health care outcomes. The effort to spur greater clinical integration through the MSSP was part of a broader set of reforms contained in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) whose aim was to improve health care quality and efficiency. Among these reforms …

Violent And Wintertime Tornadoes In The Central Midwest: A Study Of History, Trends, And Climatology, Anthony Lyza

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Tornadoes are among the most widely-feared elements of weather. The central Midwest, a region that, for the purposes of this study, encompasses eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, northern and central Illinois, northern and central Indiana, southern Michigan, and northwestern Ohio, is notorious for some of the worst tornado events in recorded history. The purposes of this study are manyfold. The goals are to establish a violent (F4/EF4-F5/EF5) tornado and wintertime tornado climatology for the central Midwest, to search for previously hypothesized patterns in major tornado occurrences, and to determine whether there are links between climate variables and incidences of violent and …

Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Is The New Driver For An Ethical Public Relations Function, Lilia Cecconi Apr 2011

Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Is The New Driver For An Ethical Public Relations Function, Lilia Cecconi

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Coombs and Holladay note that “Effective public relations can be a valuable part of strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, superficial CSR practice will result in a superficial CSR communication.” (Coombs and Holladay, 2010, 275) These authors further believe that “Public relations can help corporations to identify and promote partnerships with committed publics (typically activist groups).” This study explored the presence of CSR as mentioned on five corporate websites: Coca Cola, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Nike, and Corona. For the study, an instrument measuring website characteristics was used to provide a benchmark for comparing the five websites. Finally, each website was examined …

The social interpretation of interpersonal communication through a global perspective provides insights into human adaptation. By focusing on the cultural adaptations of members of sports teams, one can view the amazing variety of approaches to the adaptation process. This study identified sports teams at Valparaiso University having a mix of cultures especially global in origin. Through interviews and focus groups, these global representatives of various cultures described the ways the teams have developed their mutual adaptation approaches. The theories of Speech Act, Social Constructionism, and Internationalism were primarily taken from the Hansen-Horn and Neff text: Public Relations: From Theory to …

Valparaiso University's PRSSA student agency, SPARK, has been nationally recognized since 2009. This means that the Valpo SPARK chapter met professional standards set for nationally recognized student agencies. The study compared and contrasted nineteen nationally affiliated student agencies on the following criteria: 1) student agency infrastructure, 2) team development process, 3) level of client case, and 4) overall leadership elements in the program. Through interviews (e-mail and/or telephone) and analysis of PRSSA and communication websites, the data established …

Predicting Violent Crime, Janelle Ramsel, Ashley Varner, Crystal Sandoval Apr 2011

Predicting Violent Crime, Janelle Ramsel, Ashley Varner, Crystal Sandoval

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research works to predict the likelihood that an individual is going to participate in a violent crime. The predictors were taken from several bodies of work and synthesized into a survey format, which can be distributed to the desired population. These measures operate on the hypothesis that certain characteristics increase the likelihood of, but do not predict with certainty, an individual's propensity to participate in violent crime. The work also serves as a manual for how to interpret the selected data sets as well as how to break down the statistical correlations of each question to their predictive power.

Facial Recognition: Training Participants To Detect Genuine Smiles, Nate Keiser

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Nonverbal behaviors have the ability to affect how we perceive social communications. One of these nonverbal behaviors, a smile, is not always genuinely expressed. Our experiment attempted to improve discernment between genuine and fake smiles by manipulating training and feedback. The training/feedback group received feedback for each video and training. Our control was the no training/no feedback group, in which participants viewed a PowerPoint that presented smile information not relevant to distinguishing among smiles. The training group was given applicable information, through PowerPoint, on distinguishing among smiles along with viewing two videos of genuine and fake smiles. Prior to training, …

In our study, we focused on the detection of genuine and fake smiles and trained subjects to detect deception. The first training group was given applicable information, through PowerPoint, on distinguishing between smiles along with two videos presenting a genuine and fake smile. The second group viewed a PowerPoint with applicable information without videos. The third group viewed a PowerPoint containing just videos. Our control …
