Examining The Association Between Attachment And Relationship Satisfaction Through The Use Of The Couples Drawing And The Bird’S Nest Drawing, Jessica Furiness
Examining The Association Between Attachment And Relationship Satisfaction Through The Use Of The Couples Drawing And The Bird’S Nest Drawing, Jessica Furiness
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to determine if there is a positive statistical correlation between relationship satisfaction and attachment and whether or not these two factors can be accurately assessed through a single drawing. The proposed study will use a quantitative approach to examine the association between attachment and relationship satisfaction, as determined by scores on the Adult Attachment Scale and the Relationship Assessment Scale. A qualitative approach will be used to examine graphic elements within the Bird’s Nest Drawing, and the Couples Drawing to determine which elements are associated with relationship satisfaction, attachment, or both. A sample size …
Exploring The Use Of Visual Journaling During Art Therapy Internships: A Self Study, Mary Madison Lovett
Exploring The Use Of Visual Journaling During Art Therapy Internships: A Self Study, Mary Madison Lovett
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Reflective processes and journaling have been given great attention in the literature as effective tools for the enrichment of learning and professional growth (Boud, 2001). Self reflection in response to clinical experiences can help students can gain a deep level of meaning and insight. Visual journaling is one method of self reflection about which there is little scholarly literature. The process of visual journaling integrates self reflection and exploration through creative imagery and written reflection.
I conducted a qualitative self study which was an exploration of visual journaling as I experienced two semesters of clinical internships. During the study I …

Public Perception Of Desalinated Produced Water From Oil And Gas Field Operations: A Replication, Gene L. Theodori, Mona Avalos, David B. Burnett, John A. Veil
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study is a replication of Theodori et al.’s (2009) research on public perception of desalinated produced water from oil and gas field operations. The data used in this paper were collected in twelve Texas counties. Overall, the findings of this investigation paralleled those uncovered in Theodori et al.’s original exploration. Our data reveal that small percentages of respondents are extremely familiar with the process of desalination and extremely confident that desalinated water could meet human drinking water quality and purity standards. Our data also indicate that respondents are more favorably disposed toward the use of desalinated water for purposes …
Explaining Residential Energy Consumption: A Focus On Location And Race Differences In Natural Gas Use, Lazarus Adua, Jeff S. Sharp
Explaining Residential Energy Consumption: A Focus On Location And Race Differences In Natural Gas Use, Lazarus Adua, Jeff S. Sharp
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Researchers have long considered factors related to residential energy consumption. We contribute to this genre of work by exploring how residential location (rural-urban) and race are related to residential natural gas consumption. We also consider whether these relationships, if they exist, are functions of differences in housing characteristics, investment in energy efficiency, and weather conditions. Analyzing four waves of the Residential Energy Consumption Surveys, we find that natural gas consumption differs by residential location only to the extent that investment in energy efficiency and weather conditions are not taken into consideration. We also find race differences in natural gas consumption, …
A Thematic Analysis Of Local Respondents' Perceptions Of Barnett Shale Energy Development, Brooklynn J. Wynveen
A Thematic Analysis Of Local Respondents' Perceptions Of Barnett Shale Energy Development, Brooklynn J. Wynveen
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Researchers have found that the economic, social, and environmental impacts of energy development vary with both the type and location of development. Previous studies have highlighted impacts associated with the conventional energy development that occurred in the western United States in the 1970s and 1980s, and with offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Recently, however, unconventional natural gas development has become a more common type of energy development, the impacts of which are not yet well understood. To assess these impacts, as part of a larger quantitative study conducted within two Texas counties, survey respondents were invited to …

Residents' Perceptions Of Community And Environmental Impacts From Development Of Natural Gas In The Marcellus Shale: A Comparison Of Pennsylvania And New York Cases, Kathryn J. Brasier, Matthew R. Filteau, Diane K. Mclaughlin, Jeffrey Jacquet, Richard C. Stedman, Timothy W. Kelsey, Stephan J. Goetz
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Communities experiencing rapid growth due to energy development (‘boomtowns’) have reported positive and negative impacts on community and individual well-being. The perceptions of impacts vary according to stage of energy development as well as experience with extractive industries. Development of the Marcellus Shale provides an opportunity to examine these impacts over time and across geographic and historical contexts. This paper describes case study research in Pennsylvania and New York to document preliminary impacts of development occurring there. Cases vary by level of development and previous extractive history. The study finds that, in areas with low population density, higher levels of …
Natural Gas Landowner Coalitions In New York State: Emerging Benefits Of Collective Natural Resource Management, Jeffrey Jacquet, Richard C. Stedman
Natural Gas Landowner Coalitions In New York State: Emerging Benefits Of Collective Natural Resource Management, Jeffrey Jacquet, Richard C. Stedman
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Thousands of rural landowners in New York State have joined together to form grassroots organizations aimed at collectively bargaining with natural gas companies. The leverage afforded by acting collectively allows these landowner coalitions to potentially influence the economic, environmental, and community impacts of gas development across hundreds of thousands of acres. In-depth interviews with coalition leaders conducted for this article reveal the scope, motivations, and benefits of membership in these groups. Our work examines these elements using multiple frameworks for understanding collective natural resource management. The coalitions are primarily concerned with the advancement of private member benefits, while public benefits …

The Transition From 3-D To 2-D Visual Stimuli And Its Effect On Paired-Associate Learning, Amanda Beers
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A single experiment investigated the influence of varying dimensions of visual stimuli on the ability of academically gifted adolescents to recall paired-associations. Fifty-two participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups. Each group was asked to memorize the same set of 15 paired-word associations. The first group was presented with words only. The second group was presented with words and 2- dimensional (2-D) representations of each word. The third group was presented with words along with 3-dimensional (3-D) representations of the words. The fourth group was also presented words along with 3-D objects; however, this group was instructed to …

The Influence Of Family Structure And Transitions On Parenting, Income, Residential Mobility, And Substance Initiation In Early Adolescence: A Comparison Of Caucasian And African American Youth, Sally Mays
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of family structure on youth adjustment has received increasing attention as historical trends in single parenting, divorce, remarriage, and cohabitation with partners and extended family members have produced a diverse constellation of structures. African American youth are less likely than Caucasian youth to live in an “intact” family. Links between family structure and a variety of indices of youth adjustment have been established, although a relatively understudied outcome is that of substance initiation, despite its association with dependence and other negative sequelae. The dynamic effect of transitions has additionally been less studied than the static effect of structure. …
Regional Trade Agreements And The Pattern Of Trade: A Networks Approach, Rossitza Wooster, Javier A. Reyes, Stuart Shirell
Regional Trade Agreements And The Pattern Of Trade: A Networks Approach, Rossitza Wooster, Javier A. Reyes, Stuart Shirell
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
This paper uses a complex network approach for the analysis of bilateral trade data between countries over the period 1970-2000. We compute the network community structure for every year between 1970 and 2000 and compare it to null community structures that emerge from various models based on regional and geographic classifications, the implementation of RTA's and/or on gravity models of trade. Our results show that RTA formation appears to have a cyclical pattern on the world trade network community structure. We document periods where bilateral trade flows and the structure of the world trade network are consistent with those predicted …

Effect Of Distress, Referral Source, And Pressure To Attend Therapy On Motivation To Change, Lyn E. Moore
Master's Theses
Psychotherapy is an effective form of treatment, yet difficulties with engagement and dropout continue to plague the field. Poor outcomes are more likely to be achieved by poorly motivated clients and those who are mandated to attend therapy (Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross, 1992). This study examined links between motivation to change, initial levels of distress, referral source, and pressure to attend therapy in a sample of 587 individuals who attended therapy at a university-based counseling center in the Northeast. Results indicated a relationship between distress and motivation to change as well as a link between the perceived pressure felt by …
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Theses and Dissertations
Cannabinoid agonists (e.g., THC) dose-dependently decrease locomotor activity and body temperature and produce antinociception and catalepsy. Drugs that produce this tetrad of effects within a limited dose range are likely to function as CB1 receptor agonists. A structure activity relationship study from our laboratory investigating analogs of the CB1 antagonist rimonabant revealed that certain alterations in the 3-substituent of rimonabant’s pyrazole core conferred agonist-like properties in the tetrad. Interestingly, these effects were present in CB1 -/- mice, and were not reversed by rimonabant in wild-type mice. The present study evaluated two novel 3-substituent rimonabant analogs, O-6629 and O-6658 in the …
