Urban Design And Stormwater Management: An Integrated Approach To Public Hardscape Design, Jared Draper
Urban Design And Stormwater Management: An Integrated Approach To Public Hardscape Design, Jared Draper
All Theses
Among the hierarchy of motivations, Maslow identifies the social as one of the levels that generates drive in individuals (Maslow, 1970). The urban environment is a place that has great opportunity for social interaction with design and planning of public spaces. Public spaces serve an important function in society and the design of these spaces can attract or repel a population. As specific elements are incorporated in public space and especially public hardscape design, designers should not neglect the issue of sustainability. According to the Brundtland Commission, sustainability includes the 'policies and strategies that meet society's present needs without compromising …
Scarcity-Induced Domestic Conflict: Examining The Interactive Effects Of Environmental Scarcity And ‘Ethnic’ Population Pressures, Cigdem Sirin
Departmental Papers (PS)
This study argues that environmental scarcity is more likely to result in civil conflict in countries that experience ‘ethnic’ population pressures (i.e. where the size of the largest minority group is close to parity with the majority group). I refer to this argument as the ‘parity-threat’ approach to the study of scarcity-induced domestic conflict. I empirically test my argument by analysing time-series cross-section data for the period 1979–2000 using four alternative environmental indicators: (1) ecological footprint, (2) biocapacity, (3) scarcity of ecological reserves and (4) water scarcity. The results demonstrate that environmental scarcity increases the probability of civil conflict when …

Number Of Replications Required In Monte Carlo Simulation Studies: A Synthesis Of Four Studies, Daniel J. Mundform, Jay Schaffer, Myoung-Jin Kim, Dale Shaw, Ampai Thongteeraparp, Pornsin Supawan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Monte Carlo simulations are used extensively to study the performance of statistical tests and control charts. Researchers have used various numbers of replications, but rarely provide justification for their choice. Currently, no empirically-based recommendations regarding the required number of replications exist. Twenty-two studies were re-analyzed to determine empirically-based recommendations.
Matched-Pair Studies With Misclassified Ordinal Data, Tze-San Lee
Matched-Pair Studies With Misclassified Ordinal Data, Tze-San Lee
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The problem of matched-pair studies with misclassified ordinal data is considered. Misclassification is assumed to occur only between the adjacent columns/rows. Bias-adjusted generalized odds ratio and a test for marginal homogeneity are presented to account for misclassification bias. Data from lambing records of 227 Merino ewes are used to illustrate how to calculate these bias-adjusted estimators and – because validation data are not available – a sensitivity analysis is conducted.
A Robust Root Mean Square Standardized Effect Size In One-Way Fixed-Effects Anova, Guili Zhang, James Algina
A Robust Root Mean Square Standardized Effect Size In One-Way Fixed-Effects Anova, Guili Zhang, James Algina
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A robust Root Mean Square Standardized Effect Size (RMSSER) was developed to address the unsatisfactory performance of the Root Mean Square Standardized Effect Size. The coverage performances of the confidence intervals (CI) for RMSSER were investigated. The coverage probabilities of the non-central F distribution-based CI for RMSSER were adequate.
The Overall F-Tests For Seasonal Unit Roots Under Nonstationary Alternatives: Some Theoretical Results And A Monte Carlo Investigation, Ghassen El Montasser
The Overall F-Tests For Seasonal Unit Roots Under Nonstationary Alternatives: Some Theoretical Results And A Monte Carlo Investigation, Ghassen El Montasser
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In many empirical studies concerning seasonal time series, it has been shown that the whole set of unit roots associated with seasonal random walks are not present. This article focuses on the overall F-tests for seasonal unit roots under some nonstationary alternatives different from the seasonal random walk. The asymptotic theory of these tests is established for these cases using a new approach based on circulant matrix concepts. The simulation results joined to this theoretic analysis showed that the overall F-tests, as well as their augmented versions, maintained high power against the nonstationary alternatives.
Weighting Large Datasets With Complex Sampling Designs: Choosing The Appropriate Variance Estimation Method, Sara Mann, James Chowhan
Weighting Large Datasets With Complex Sampling Designs: Choosing The Appropriate Variance Estimation Method, Sara Mann, James Chowhan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Using the Canadian Workplace and Employee Survey (WES), three variance estimation methods for weighting large datasets with complex sampling designs are compared: simple final weighting, standard bootstrapping and mean bootstrapping. Using a logit analysis, it is shown - depending on which weighting method is used - different predictor variables are significant. The potential lack of independence inherent in a multi-stage cluster sample design, as in the WES, results in a downward bias in the variance when conducting statistical inference (using the simple final weight), which in turn results in increased Type I errors. Bootstrap methods can account for the survey’s …
Using Finite Mixture Modeling To Deal With Systematic Measurement Error: A Case Study, Min Liu, Gregory R. Hancock, Jeffrey R. Harring
Using Finite Mixture Modeling To Deal With Systematic Measurement Error: A Case Study, Min Liu, Gregory R. Hancock, Jeffrey R. Harring
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Conventional methods and analyses view measurement error as random. A scenario is presented where a variable was measured with systematic error. Mixture models with systematic parameter constraints were used to test hypotheses in the context of general linear models; this accommodated the heterogeneity arising due to systematic measurement error.
Estimating Internal Consistency Using Bayesian Methods, Miguel A. Padilla, Guili Zhang
Estimating Internal Consistency Using Bayesian Methods, Miguel A. Padilla, Guili Zhang
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Bayesian internal consistency and its Bayesian credible interval (BCI) are developed and Bayesian internal consistency and its percentile and normal theory based BCIs were investigated in a simulation study. Results indicate that the Bayesian internal consistency is relatively unbiased under all investigated conditions and the percentile based BCIs yielded better coverage performance.

The Implications Of Merleau-Ponty For The Human Sciences, Ryan Marcotte
The Implications Of Merleau-Ponty For The Human Sciences, Ryan Marcotte
Senior Honors Projects
The Implications of Merleau-Ponty for the Human Sciences Ryan Marcotte Cobb Faculty Sponsor: Galen Johnson, Philosophy The American Anthropology Association (AAA) made headlines in November 2010 due to a controversial change in their 'Long-Range Plan.' The revised AAA mission statement omits all mention of the word 'science' and this omission has sparked a fierce debate within the anthropology community. The debate reveals that the study of social phenomena can be approached from two competing points of view – a scientific and a non-scientific perspective. This project is concerned with the historical and intellectual developments that led to this competition between …

Not Just Another Tea Party
Nicole Kramer
Faculty Sponsor: Brian Krueger , Political Science
At times throughout U.S. history, there have been factions within political parties that do not just fade away or blend into the dominant paradigm, but survive and fundamentally alter the party. However, what qualifies a movement as a faction and not just another political idea that has gained some popularity, and what allows a faction to actually make a significant impact?
I began my research when I became curious and started looking at the Tea Party movement. As part of my study I wanted to learn …
Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman
Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman
Senior Honors Projects
The concept of love has been an eternally elusive subject. It is a definition and meaning that philosophers, psychologists, and biologists have been seeking since the beginning of time. Wars have been waged and fought over it, while friendships have been initiated and have ended because of this idea. But what exactly is love, and why is it important to define this enigma?
In order to help define this idea of love, several books and numerous research articles were consulted, and interviews were conducted with faculty of The University of Rhode Island. Dr. Nasser Zawia was interviewed, in order to …
The Union Idea In 21st Century America, Amanda M. Perry
The Union Idea In 21st Century America, Amanda M. Perry
Senior Honors Projects
This project explores the development of the “union idea” and its role in low wage labor markets in the 21st Century.
The "labor question" became a central issue in the early 20th century because its solution seemed essential to the survival of American democracy itself: could a society based on wage labor provide a rising standard of living and full social participation for those workers? For a time during and after World War II the “union idea” - workplace democracy, working class solidarity, and the allocation of resources partly on a social rather than a market basis – became …

Cultural Competency: A Student’s Examination of Haiti
Heidi Dotson
Faculty Sponsor: Gail Faris, Women’s Center
On January 12, 2010 the world watched as a 7.0 milliwatt earthquake brought Haiti to her knees. It did not take long before the international community had arrived to help Haiti rise from the rubble. On October 21, 2010 the Center for Disease Control confirmed a cholera epidemic in Haiti. One year after the earthquake, only five percent of the rubble had been cleared, and more than one million Haitians were living as refugees in “temporary” tents. Watching all of this from my “temporary” beach …

How to Excel in the Fashion Industry
Elizabeth Weaver
Faculty Sponsor: Claire Lacoste Kapstein, Textiles, Merchandising and Design
Co-sponsor: Art Mead, Economics
The fashion industry is most often thought of as a glamorous business filled with successful designers and supermodels. For fashion students, however, the industry they seek to enter upon graduation is drastically different. Students entering merchandising and retailing related careers will spend a large portion of their time analyzing data and working in Microsoft Excel.
As a graduating senior with a dual degree in Textiles, Merchandising and Design and Economics, I wanted to create a project that could …
Is Creativity Related To Physical Health? The Relationships Between Creativity, Flow, Self-Esteem, Physical Activity And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Molly Siwula
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The relationship between creativity and overall health has not been widely examined, as researchers have previously focused mainly on the association between creativity and mental illness. Certain aspects of the creative personality (i.e. high physical energy, intelligence, passion, and self-discipline) may predict engagement in healthy behaviors. Creativity has been shown to positively relate to self-esteem, which also has been linked to general health. In addition, both athletes and creative individuals tend to experience flow. This study examined self-esteem and flow as possible mechanisms to partially account for the relationship between creativity and general health. Community participants (N = 83) …
Renegotiating Gender And Class In The Berry Fields Of Michoacán, Mexico, Donna Chollett
Renegotiating Gender And Class In The Berry Fields Of Michoacán, Mexico, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
This article examines the renegotiation of gender and class in a rural Mexican community where economic crisis in the sugar industry led foreign agribusinesses to promote blackberry and raspberry production for export and hire primarily women as berry pickers. Analysis focuses on the transition from a sugar economy where mostly men worked in the cane fields to non-traditional agricultural exports when women entered agricultural waged labor in unprecedented numbers. This restructuring of the regional economy raises important questions regarding the marginalization of differentiated subaltern groups and the nature of new sets of power relations between transnational agribusinesses, berry growers, and …
Implementing A Discernment Phase For Those Nominated In The Shepherd Selection Process At The Cinco Ranch Church Of Christ, Aaron Walling
Implementing A Discernment Phase For Those Nominated In The Shepherd Selection Process At The Cinco Ranch Church Of Christ, Aaron Walling
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project that implemented a discernment phase for those nominated in the shepherd selection process at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ. Occurring in the fall of 2010, this project involved nominees in a series of six one-hour, thirty-minute sessions designed to establish the theological foundations for shepherding and to explore its practical expression at Cinco Ranch. For the theological component, this project primarily utilized Ephesians 4:11-16, and for the practical side, it incorporated group interactions with those serving as shepherds along with the review of guiding leadership documents. The project‟s …

Every year, in the United States, between 100-200 babies are infected prenatally with HIV. With the use of antiretroviral medications, elective cesarean section and formula feeding, the risk of vertical transmission can be reduced to less than 2%. In this paper I analyzed whether or not state governments should mandate HIV testing for all pregnant women in order to reduce vertical transmission of HIV. By looking at the cases for and against mandatory testing, as well as looking at states such as Connecticut who have implemented mandatory testing, I will present the case for why the benefit of mandatory testing …

Preventing Pandemics: Contributing Factors To Susceptibility During The H1n1 Pandemic, Melanie A. Zilora
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This paper uses Poisson and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression techniques on panel data from the United Nations World Health Organization’s FluNet to evaluate factors contributing to a country’s H1N1 influenza (swine flu) pandemic outcomes. Countries with higher development (as measured by gross domestic product and the United Nations Human Development Program’s development index) and higher mean annual temperature (as measured in the capital city) tended to have an earlier first reporting of cases. Though subject to reporting biases, the results also suggest that mass vaccinations have a negative effect on weekly reported cases. Countries that would vaccinate in the …

As the largest private sector employer in the United States, corporate retail giant Walmart continues to make waves in United States culture and the economy since launching its first store in 1962. As Walmart seeks to expand, the validity of its consumer guarantee to “save money, live better” has been increasingly scrutinized, given Walmart’s use of controversial business practices, most notably its employee benefit policies and anti-unionization efforts. With over 1.4 million employees in the United States, there is much talk surrounding the potential costs of Walmart’s low prices. This study analyzes selected healthcare and unionization impacts of Walmart in …

Utilization Of The New York State Division Of Human Rights, Sarah Turney
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
There is a general disconnect between the services the New York State government offers and their utilization. This paper focuses on the New York State Division of Human Rights. The New York State Division of Human Rights purpose is to enforce the Human Rights Law through investigations into complaints of discrimination based on the protected classes. For the purposes of this paper, only employment discrimination will be discussed.
This paper argues the lack of utilization of these services arises from the lack of resident awareness of these services. Moreover, this paper argues that implementing practical government lesson plans into the …

Imagining Place, Fighting For Space The Story Of The National Heritage Area Movement, Jesse Solomon Turiel
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
In this paper, I analyze recent economic and political trends by providing an in depth look at the National Heritage Area (NHA) program. By tracing their conception and origination back to the early 1980s, I attempt to place NHAs within the larger framework of deindustrialization and government cutbacks that were occurring at the time. Furthermore, I show how, with their emphasis on building social capital and creating cross-jurisdictional ties, NHAs were a natural response to emerging “new regionalist” ideals in America. By embracing the concept of regional partnerships to enhance economic competitiveness, NHAs signaled a new drive towards geographical thinking …

The Medicalization Of “Homosexuality”, Kristin (Lula) Townsend
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Cross culturally and historically people who are attracted to members of their own sex ("homosexuals") have been viewed and treated in radically different ways. Some societies have exhibited tolerance or indifference, whereas others have vilified and persecuted homosexuals. Using primary sources, this project reviews the major sociological and medical theories of “homosexuality” between 1864 and 1946, evaluates their bias and political implications, and closes with a brief overview of contemporary research.
In chapter two the themes of the texts presented are: causality, diagnosis, and treatment. The primary theory between 1864 and 1908 argues the congenital nature of “homosexuality. The themes …

High School Students’ Knowledge Of Careers And Non-College Post-Secondary Options, Mariel Stein
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This Capstone Project discusses high school students’ knowledge of careers and non-college post-secondary options. The problem this project addresses is the fact that many high school students lack adequate knowledge of careers and non-college post-secondary options, and therefore they often make poor decisions regarding their post-secondary plans.
The methodology used was research, observations, and personal communication. I conducted inductive research because I felt that my information of high school vocational education was too narrow and I wanted to broaden my knowledge to see what the trend is across the country, what the causes of the aforementioned problem are, and what …

The subject of petrodollar recycling has frequently captured the interest of academics, politicians and the media. Specifically, the issue typically boils down to one central question: where exactly are the petrodollars—revenue earned from the sale of oil—flowing? According to traditional scholars like Bernard Mommer and Terry Lynn Karl the recurring argument is that in oil-exporting nations, oil revenues are channeled directly into the hands of a few government officials resulting in corruption, inequality and economic decay.
However, the main limitation of this traditional argument is that it tends to focus solely on the dynamics between the national level and local …
