Keys To Unlocking Creative Potential: The Expressive Path To Personal Growth, Marta D. Ockuly

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

An experiential journey into personal growth and creative expression is, by nature, transformational.  Undertaken in a public platform using social media (Twitter and blogging) it reveals powerful potential as a teaching and mentoring tool for inspiring creative action around the world.  This project was designed to blend my joys and passions for tweeting positive inspiration and encouragement, sharing my readings and research related to creativity, exploring expressive art, activating creative potential with joy, collecting and sharing quotes, coaching positive change and creative action, and raising awareness of everyday creativity into a learning pathway which could be accessed by anyone using …

Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy May 2011

Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

As I had the chance to visit Cambodia and talk to actual victims, I planned to use ethnographic methodology to incorporate testimonies and personal interaction to supplement the lack of specific research in this field. I believed ethnography would be an effective method as it takes a holistic perspective of all contributing factors, such as history, geography, religion, government, and population. My plan was to conduct an ethnographic case study of Cambodia using current scholarship on these areas, and then contribute my personal experiences. To ensure quality control and unbiased research. I used contextualization by conducting my research in Cambodia, …

How Sweet Is It, Really? The Anomalous Effects Of Glucose At Retrieval, Sarah A. Gillott May 2011

How Sweet Is It, Really? The Anomalous Effects Of Glucose At Retrieval, Sarah A. Gillott

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

151 participants gave free recall and probed response memories for best kisses and The Lion King. Blood-glucose levels were manipulated at retrieval with glucose (50g) or saccharin (35mg) in the form of a lemonade drink. Memories for best kisses were more elaborate than memories for The Lion King. This may be due to the fact that best kiss memories were rated as more arousing than film memories. Regardless, high blood-glucose levels as a result of glucose consumption significantly impaired autobiographical kiss memory, yet enhanced semantic memory for The …

Positive Affect During Goal Adoption : Why Happiness Breeds Success, Katherine Wainwright May 2011

Positive Affect During Goal Adoption : Why Happiness Breeds Success, Katherine Wainwright

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Prior research has shown that positive affect helps individuals to achieve their goals. typically by energizing individuals' performance during goal pursuit. However, questions remain as to whether other mechanisms might exist by which positive affect could facilitate success. Specifically, researchers have yet to address the role that positive affect might play during the process of goal adoption. In the current study, I examined whether positive affect experienced at the time of goal adoption facilitates goal achievement. Participants were induced into either a positive or neutral affective state by watching a video clip. They were also asked to adopt the goal …

Insincerity And Depravity Get Noticed, Alexandria M. Boswell May 2011

Insincerity And Depravity Get Noticed, Alexandria M. Boswell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Previous studies have shown that people use environmental cues to identify the intentions of others with whom they interact. This study sought to examine how an observer’s incidental memory for strangers was influenced by the emotional expression displayed by the stranger as well as the type of action in which the stranger was involved. Incidental memory was assessed using a memory task that first asked observers to view a series of faces (“targets”) that were each paired with an action. Later, observers were asked if they recognized previously viewed targets amongst novel targets. Incidental memory tasks are used to investigate …

As part of my senior capstone course, Journalism 456, the class was divided into two groups of six people that were given different organizations to choose from to create a public relations campaign for during the Spring 2011 semester. My group and I devised and carried out a public relations campaign for the Institute for Rural Health Development and Research (IRHDR), a non-profit organization located in the Academic Complex on Western Kentucky University’s campus. The goal for this campaign was to increase the Institute’s opportunity to compete for grant opportunities as well as expand its research components by implementing a …

Memory, Presence, Emergence: Creativity In Time, Amy E. Frazier May 2011

Memory, Presence, Emergence: Creativity In Time, Amy E. Frazier

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project is an exploration of the ways in which memory, present-moment awareness, and emergence support and are involved in our creativity. Our creative relationship to time is also explored. The project involved research and writing, and resulted in the script of a one-woman show, Creativity in Time, which was presented in two performances as a staged reading. The script synthesizes a portion of the research, and is loosely structured on a narrative framework of personal experiences. An additional theme is the nature of the “a-ha” moment of creative insight, and how it is linked to memory, present-moment awareness and …

The Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Impulsivity In College Students, Myles Elgin Trapp May 2011

The Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Impulsivity In College Students, Myles Elgin Trapp

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study investigated the impact of a brief, introductory mindfulness intervention on attention, executive control, and impulsivity. I randomly assigned forty-seven undergraduate students to a treatment group (TG) receiving mindfulness training and a waiting list control group (WLG). Participants completed a battery of self-report questionnaires and standardized neuropsychological tests before and after the intervention. Participants high in trait mindfulness suffered less interference on a Stroop task, were less impulsive on the Balloon Analogue Risk Task, but also evidenced less cognitive flexibility on a dual fluency test at baseline. The TG demonstrated greater improvement than the WLG from baseline to re-test …

The Federal Imd Exemption And Cost-Shifting, Todd Rainey May 2011

The Federal Imd Exemption And Cost-Shifting, Todd Rainey

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the Federal IMD exclusion has resulted in states opting to shift costs to the government by enacting inefficient Medicaid programs in order to gain federal reimbursement. The claim of “cost-shifting” relies on the assumption that state programs are inefficient – that is, that their Medicaid programs are less effective at reducing incarceration rates (as a metric for failure to properly treat) than their psychiatric hospitals. Literature in the Public Health, Psychiatric, and Criminal Justice fields was surveyed in order to determine relevant factors to be included in the model. Model variables include factors which contribute to …

Making Wku A Fair Trade University, Matthew John Vaughan May 2011

Making Wku A Fair Trade University, Matthew John Vaughan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Many products consumed on college campuses such as coffee and chocolate come from developing countries where producers are often paid insufficiently and exploited. Fair Trade certification of products guarantees producers a fair price and other social benefits. The objective of my CE/T project is to initiate a successful campaign to increase awareness of Fair Trade among students at WKU and gain "Fair Trade University" recognition for WKU. My efforts have included establishing a permanent Fair Trade Steering Committee, organizing campus-wide awareness events and partnering with campus groups to promote Fair Trade education and awareness. In this final account, I review …

Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice May 2011

Watch What You Eat: From Self-Surveillance To Affective Eating, Constance Calice

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

How is it that Americans are so obsessed with nutrition and dieting and yet remain unhealthy? This project attempts to give a theoretically driven answer to this great paradox within the Western diet. Constance Calice analyzes the practice and rhetoric of dieting as a crystallization of a problematic relationship to food using a Foucauldian understanding of discipline. Using examples from the media, she illustrates the way in which outside forces effect our food choices and the power relationships formed in this exchange. To offer an alternative view to nutritionism she looks to the Local Food Movement and affect theory to …

Masculinity In Musicals: A Comparison Between The 1950s And Present Day, Emily M. Eisenbrey May 2011

Masculinity In Musicals: A Comparison Between The 1950s And Present Day, Emily M. Eisenbrey

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project compares and contrasts ideas of masculinity in musicals from the 1950s to those of present day. Current musicals have allowed for more expressions of masculinity while musicals from the 1950s provided a narrower definition of masculinity. This paper explores the current perception that straight men don’t enjoy musicals and breaks down why this perception exists. Multiple lines of evidence are used to examine the connection between masculinity and male audience attendance of musicals. These lines of evidence are: masculinity research, script analysis, performance analysis, reviews of musicals, and original surveys.

Parent-Child Communication About Substance Use: Experiences Of Latino Emerging Adults, Kathryn Reid-Quiñones May 2011

Parent-Child Communication About Substance Use: Experiences Of Latino Emerging Adults, Kathryn Reid-Quiñones

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current studies was to identify messages that Latino parents communicate to their offspring about the use of legal and illegal drugs and to determine associations between parental messages and substance use outcomes. Previous research has identified parent-child communication as protective against tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. However, most of these studies have failed to examine the specific messages communicated and those that have focused almost exclusively on non-Hispanic Caucasians. Study 1 identified messages that Latino parents communicate to their offspring regarding legal and illegal drugs through two focus groups with Latino college students (N = …

Community-Based Applied Research With Latino Immigrant Families: Informing Practice And Research According To Ethical And Social Justice Principles, Ana A. L. Baumann, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, José Rubén Parra-Cardona

Psychology Faculty Publications

This manuscript describes the implementation of two community-based programs of research with Latino immigrant populations exposed to intense contextual challenges. We provide background on our program of research and specific implementation of an evidence-based parenting intervention. We also describe how our research efforts were seriously affected by immigration-related events such as the ICE raids in Utah and a history of discrimination and exclusion affecting Latino immigrants in Michigan. These external political and social challenges have affected the very core principles of our efforts to implement community-based approaches. The current manuscript describes key lessons that we have learned in this process. …

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr May 2011

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

As families get busier and become extended through marriage, adoption, and mutual commitments, people struggle to describe their relationships in familiar ways that gives them legitimacy as they expand out of the nuclear family model. The idea that Monogamy or Polyamory is the best form for relationships to take is just as an absurd notion as attempting to hold people to a monocultural idea of morality on these matters. Not educating people to understand and interact with each other through the diverse forms of family and relationships is causing a lot of pain and wrongly isolating many people. Regardless of …

Changes In Newspaper Portrayals Of Women, 1900-1960, Laurel Wilson May 2011

Changes In Newspaper Portrayals Of Women, 1900-1960, Laurel Wilson

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis will show how mainstream newspapers depicted women in the first half of the twentieth century, and how these portrayals changed alongside society’s view of women during this time. In addition, it will look at how coverage of women and the transformations occurring during these fifty years may have influenced and affected each other, as well as how media treatment of women contributed to the beginnings of the second wave of feminism that started in the second half of the century.
