Natural Decrease In America: More Coffins Than Cradles, Kenneth M. Johnson
Natural Decrease In America: More Coffins Than Cradles, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
This brief summarizes recent regional patterns of natural decrease in the United States. Natural decrease occurs when more deaths than births occur in an area in a given year. The growing incidence of natural decrease has gone largely unnoticed, yet natural decrease is no longer an isolated phenomenon occurring in a few remote corners of the country. Last year, 24 percent of all U.S. counties experienced natural decrease. And, for the first time in U.S. history, deaths now exceed births in an entire state. Author Ken Johnson discusses the implications of natural decrease, as well as the impact of the …
Getting More Media Bang For Your Buck: Understanding Attitudes And Beliefs Toward Internet, Television, And Print Advertising, Ashley Stevens
Getting More Media Bang For Your Buck: Understanding Attitudes And Beliefs Toward Internet, Television, And Print Advertising, Ashley Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the following study is to provide advertisers with a better understanding of how Internet, television, and print media influence the perceptions of an advertisement and how those perceptions can influence purchasing behavior. This study uses Q Methodology, a methodology used to measure attitudes and beliefs. Three distinct groups emerged from the data labeled the Avoiders, the Traditionalists, and the Actives. Avoiders sought to bypass advertising, Traditionalists showed a liking toward traditional forms of advertising, and Actives were neither seeking out nor abstaining from viewing advertising. All three groups showed distrust toward Internet advertising.

Strategically Leveraging Learning Space To Create Partnership Opportunities, Tomalee Doan
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The Management & Economics Library at Purdue University began a major physical and conceptual renovation four years ago. The conceptual renovation involves a rethinking of library faculty and staff roles and responsibilities based on the library’s and university’s strategic directives. The LearnLab space is being used as a springboard to create new partnerships, to implement our new roles, and to transform the perspective of an academic library’s present capability. This article will highlight the variety of opportunities that have arisen by leveraging the Learn Lab space.

Presentation For Marshall University Institutional Repository Proposal, Jingping Zhang, Edward Aractingi, Gretchen Rae Beach, Nathaniel Debruin, Paula Kaplan, Thomas Walker
Librarian Research
The purpose of this proposal is to identify the need for establishing an Institutional Repository at Marshall University to facilitate the collection, preservation, and dissemination of the intellectual output of the students, faculty, and administrative offices of the University.
Institutional Repositories (IRs) provide a digital ‘storehouse’ for academic institutions to house a wide variety of scholarly material created by students, faculty, and administrators. They also provide a readily accessible depository for selected archival material, video and still images, current news and events, procedural and policy guidelines, and other information that benefits the university community and other users, including the public. …

The Family's End, Scott Yenor
The Family's End, Scott Yenor
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Family decline appears to be inevitable when viewed with a long perspective. The family has been progressively differentiated from institutions that now accomplish what was formerly within the provenance of the family. The city's gods, and eventually the Church, replaced ancestral gods. The marketplace, and eventually the modern economy, replaced the family as the unit of economic production. The city replaced primitive patriarchy. Slowly, and more controversially, the state has come to fulfill increasing portions of the family’s educational mission. Even the family’s "provision of social services" has come, more and more, to be a state concern. This "loss of …

The Role Of Parenting And Personal Characteristics On Deviant Peer Association Among European American And Latino Adolescents, Laura M. Padilla-Walker
The Role Of Parenting And Personal Characteristics On Deviant Peer Association Among European American And Latino Adolescents, Laura M. Padilla-Walker
Faculty Publications
This study examined both mothers’ and fathers’ parenting (positive and negative) and adolescents’ personal characteristics (religiosity, social initiative, aggression, depression) in relation to perceived deviant peer association for European American and Latino adolescents. Using structural equation modeling, adolescents’ reports of positive or negative mothering and fathering were found to be related to adolescents’ personal characteristics, and these characteristics were, in turn, related to perceived deviant peer association. Ethnic differences in means were found in both parenting and outcome variables, with European American adolescents reporting higher levels of positive parenting and social initiative, and lower levels of perceived deviant peer association …
Addressing Information Needs In Sport Management, An Interdisciplinary Field, Kendra Spahr, Stephanie Wiegand
Addressing Information Needs In Sport Management, An Interdisciplinary Field, Kendra Spahr, Stephanie Wiegand
University Libraries Publications
Sport management as a scholarly discipline is relatively new, and very few students who earn doctorates in this field go into academia, instead choosing to go into practice where salaries are much higher. Due to these circumstances, literature research in sport management is difficult for students as well as librarians, as very little primary research exists in published journals and books. This poster reviews challenges for librarians, the best information resources to support academic sport management programs, common student questions, and tangential research areas that support research in this discipline.
Division Of Labor And Marital Quality In Russia, Carol Synae Kim
Division Of Labor And Marital Quality In Russia, Carol Synae Kim
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined whether investigation of the linkages between division of labor and marital quality would produce the same results in Russia that have been found in the U.S. Russian couples (n = 172) participated in the study by answering three packets of questionnaires. The Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale was used to measure each partner's rating of their levels of satisfaction with their marital relationship and their spouse. The results from the structural equation models indicated that the more the wives perceived themselves doing more and expressed dissatisfaction of their spouse's contribution to child care tasks and apartment maintenance, the …
Political Economy Of Budget, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Political Economy Of Budget, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
The anticipation about national budget creates a lot of hype, particularly among the news channels, which have swollen in numbers and work in a highly competitive environment. However, by the time the actual budget is announced most of the information becomes already available in the public domain through trickles and dribs. The budget announcement, itself, comes as an anti-climax as it does not contain much that is not already known. Commentators and observers make superficial points about the realism of the budget targets and numbers. What is really important is to understand the dynamics and the context — particularly, the …
