High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying Prevention And Intervention Strategies, Sterling V. Stauffer Jun 2011

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying Prevention And Intervention Strategies, Sterling V. Stauffer

Theses and Dissertations

Results from recent meta-analyses have indicated that bully prevention programs tend to produce little discernable change in student behavior. Possible reasons include a lack of teacher buy-in and teachers' questioning about the effectiveness of such programs. Teacher buy-in is an essential ingredient when implementing and maintaining effective school-based interventions, including bully prevention programs. In order to examine teachers' perceptions, a questionnaire was administered to 66 high school teachers in a western U.S. urban high school. The questionnaire examined teachers' attitudes regarding the impact of cyber bullying on students; which intervening strategies teachers were likely to use when dealing with cyber …

Aerospace And Aviation Workforce Strategy, Kristy Rochon, Wright State University Center For Urban And Public Affairs Jun 2011

Aerospace And Aviation Workforce Strategy, Kristy Rochon, Wright State University Center For Urban And Public Affairs

Economic Development

Despite the struggling economy and the challenges that have plagued the commercial aviation market, the national Aerospace and Aviation industry has experienced growth from 2005 to 2009. U.S. Aerospace sales increased by 21 percent and profits increased by 29 percent. However, at the same time, aircraft production lines have contracted as a result of decreased defense spending over the past 15 years. This contraction has limited production surge capacity, an event that is looming as a result of aging aircraft in both the commercial and defense fleets. There is a window of opportunity for the State of Ohio to emerge …

7- And 12-Month-Olds' Intermodal Recognition Of Affect: 7-Month-Olds Are "Smarter" Than 12-Month-Olds, Mark Oborn Whiteley Jun 2011

7- And 12-Month-Olds' Intermodal Recognition Of Affect: 7-Month-Olds Are "Smarter" Than 12-Month-Olds, Mark Oborn Whiteley

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that by 7-months of age infants demonstrate recognition of emotion by successfully matching faces and voices based on affect in an intermodal matching procedure. It is often assumed that once an ability is present the development of that ability has "ceased." Therefore, no research has examined if and how the ability to match faces and voices based on affect develops after the first 7-months. This study examined how the ability to match faces and voices based on affect changes from 7- to 12-months. Looking at infant's proportion of total looking time (PTLT) results showed that, consistent with …

Why Clowns Taste Funny: The Relationship Between Humor And Semantic Ambiguity, Tristan A. Bekinschtein, Matthew H. Davis, Jennifer M. Rodd, Adrian M. Owen

Psychology Publications

What makes us laugh? One crucial component of many jokes is the disambiguation of words with multiple meanings. In this functional MRI study of normal participants, the neural mechanisms that underlie our experience of getting a joke that depends on the resolution of semantically ambiguous words were explored. Jokes that contained ambiguous words were compared with sentences that contained ambiguous words but were not funny, as well as to matched verbal jokes that did not depend on semantic ambiguity. The results confirm that both the left inferior temporal gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus are involved in processing the semantic …

Mentoring: Combating Vulnerabilities Of Homeless Children, Julia Lane Mitchell Jun 2011

Mentoring: Combating Vulnerabilities Of Homeless Children, Julia Lane Mitchell

Florida Public Health Review

Homeless children are at risk for numerous health maintenance, academic performance, job preparedness, and emotional well- being issues. The effects of poverty multiply with time, posing greater risks the longer children are entrenched in homelessness. Expansive, holistic programming can address the special needs ofhomeless children. One-on-one mentoring offers a viable strategy to prevent morbidity emanating from homelessness by providing personal attention, encouragement, and affirmation to these vulnerable children, who with time, may develop a more defined self-identity that results in motivation and success.

Background: The peak shift model predicts that the age-profile of a pathogen’s prevalence depends upon its transmission rate, peaking earlier in populations with higher transmission and declining as partial immunity is acquired. Helminth infections are associated with increased immunoglobulin E (IgE), which may convey partial immunity and influence the peak shift. Although studies have noted peak shifts in helminths, corresponding peak shifts in total IgE have not been investigated, nor has the age-patterning been carefully examined across populations. We test for differences in the agepatterning of IgE between two South American forager-horticulturalist populations and the United States: the Tsimane …

Indigenous Women College Students' Perspectives On College, Work, And Family, Jennie L. Bingham Jun 2011

Indigenous Women College Students' Perspectives On College, Work, And Family, Jennie L. Bingham

Theses and Dissertations

Native American and First Nations (hereafter referred to as indigenous) women college students are faced with a challenge to balance both their culture and the demands of the dominant Western culture in family, school, and work/employment roles. The presence of indigenous women in higher education and in the work force has increased since World War II. While there is an abundance of literature on work-family balance and work-family conflict, with some focus on the perspectives and expectations of college-aged students, there is a dearth in both of these areas with regards to indigenous populations. In order to begin to …

Young Adult Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Questioning (Lgbtq) Non-Fiction Collections And Countywide Anti-Discrimination Policies, Kynita Stringer-Stanback

Urban Library Journal

This study examines news articles and anti-discrimination ordinances that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) communities in the four most populous counties from five Southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The possible impact of such policies on the collection of non-fiction young adult materials in the public libraries in those counties is explored. The holdings of each county are compared to a list of 23 titles compiled from literary award winners selected from the time period 1996-2003 using the Lambda Literary Foundation Awards, the American Library Association Stonewall Awards, and an American Library Association …

A Content Analysis Of The Strategic Plans Of The Coalition Of Urban Serving Universities’ Academic Libraries, Tom Bielavitz

Urban Library Journal

As academic libraries support the curricular mission of the university, the strategic plans of academic libraries often reflect the priorities and initiatives of the larger institution. Urban universities often incorporate concepts of community engagement in their mission. The Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (http://www.usucoalition.org), a federation of 43 urban universities, has developed initiatives which seek to establish the university and city as partners. Using the publicly-accessible strategic plans of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) affiliated libraries as a data set, the research will perform a content analysis, using Atlas.ti software, to look for evidence that the libraries are …

First-Year Library Mentorship Opportunities, Crystal Goldman Jun 2011

First-Year Library Mentorship Opportunities, Crystal Goldman

Urban Library Journal

The first-year experience at any university library sets the foundation for the future relationship between the new faculty member and the library as a whole. Not only is the librarian being acculturated to the organization, but he or she must decide if the library and university will provide a supportive environment for his or her career goals. In this probationary process, the tenured librarians evaluate their tenure-track colleagues’ professional progression and merit. Many libraries institute a formal first-year mentoring program in order to facilitate the immersion of new faculty members into the organizational culture of the library and university. There …

Queens Library Healthlink: Fighting Health Disparities Through Community Engagement, Tamara A. Michel, Eilleen Sabino, Alexis J. Stevenson, Elisa Weiss, Alison Carpenter, Bruce Rapkin

Urban Library Journal

Queens, New York is a diverse urban environment and home to many recent immigrants and low-income populations, which are known to have lower access to healthcare and are thus at higher risk for a wide range of negative health outcomes. Queens residents face serious cancer disparities, with late-stage cancer detection rates for breast, colorectal and prostate cancers far surpassing national averages. Developed to address such disparities, Queens Library HealthLink (HealthLink) is a four-way partnership that seeks to increase access to cancer screening, care and education in medically underserved neighborhoods in Queens. Through 20 of the 62 Queens Public Libraries, HealthLink …

Disability, Vulnerability And Citizenship: To What Extent Is Education A Protective Mechanism For Children With Disabilities In Countries Affected By Conflict?, Jean-Francois Trani, Maria Kett, Parul Bakhshi, Nicola Bailey

Brown School Faculty Publications

Humanitarian crises as a result of conflict are often characterised by failure of the social contract between the state and its citizens. For a variety of reasons, children with disabilities are often particularly vulnerable in time of humanitarian crisis. This paper draws on research undertaken by the authors in a series of countries affected by conflict, and looks at how the politics and policies of such countries, and the humanitarian and development agencies working in them, continue to exclude children with disabilities from formal and informal education structures. It will be argued that this exclusion not only impedes progress on …

Pedestrian Safety In Hillsborough County, Florida: A Proposed Policy Approach, Alyssa B. Mayer Jun 2011

Pedestrian Safety In Hillsborough County, Florida: A Proposed Policy Approach, Alyssa B. Mayer

Florida Public Health Review

Despite the resurgence of interest in policy implementation, communities, community-based coalitions, and other community- based groups have had mixed success in effecting state and local health policy changes. However, policy changes have been deemed more effective than individual behavior change programs. The creation of a policy advocacy framework may simplify the policy analysis process and arm community groups with practical tools to select, modify, and promote effective public health policies. This paper applies a hypothetical framework for equipping community groups to apply an evidence base to focus policy advocacy efforts systematically.

Oral Proficiency Assessment Of French Using An Elicited Imitation Test And Automatic Speech Recognition, Benjamin J. Millard Jun 2011

Oral Proficiency Assessment Of French Using An Elicited Imitation Test And Automatic Speech Recognition, Benjamin J. Millard

Theses and Dissertations

Testing oral proficiency is an important, but often neglected part of the foreign language classroom. Currently accepted methods in testing oral proficiency are timely and expensive. Some work has been done to test and implement new assessment methods, but have focused primarily on English or Spanish (Graham et al. 2008). In this thesis, I demonstrate that the processes established for English and Spanish elicited imitation (EI) testing are relevant to French EI testing. First, I document the development, implementation and evaluation of an EI test to assess French oral proficiency. I also detail the incorporation of the use of automatic …
