The Effect Of Postpartum Depression On Child Cognitive Development, Joshua Lees Jul 2011

The Effect Of Postpartum Depression On Child Cognitive Development, Joshua Lees

Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of postpartum depression (PPD) in Western societies is approximately 10-15% and its cause is multi-faceted. Because mothers largely constitute infants' social environment and mediate their experience of the external world, it is imperative to investigate the effects of PPD on child growth and development. Within this paper, the author explores previously conducted Post-Partum Depression research, in regards to its effects on child cognitive development. Following this literature review, a brief experimental study is conducted and explained on a sample population of mothers' of special needs children, serviced by an Early Intervention provider. During this experimental analysis, the researcher …

Rural Workers Have Less Access To Paid Sick Days, Kristin Smith, Andrew P. Schaefer Jul 2011

Rural Workers Have Less Access To Paid Sick Days, Kristin Smith, Andrew P. Schaefer

Carsey Publications

This brief, using data from the 2008 National Study of the Changing Workforce (NSCW) survey, analyzes paid sick time rates of workers by place and type of work. Paid sick days provide job protection to workers and a steady paycheck when they need to care for themselves or family members. Paid sick days also help workers with more limited resources who cannot otherwise afford to take a day off. Authors Kristin Smith and Andrew Schaefer report that a greater proportion of rural workers than urban workers (both suburban and central-city) lack access to at least five paid sick days per …

Beyond ‘‘Green Buildings:’’ Exploring The Effects Of Jevons’ Paradox On The Sustainability Of Archival Practices, Mark D. Wolfe Jul 2011

Beyond ‘‘Green Buildings:’’ Exploring The Effects Of Jevons’ Paradox On The Sustainability Of Archival Practices, Mark D. Wolfe

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The sustainability of archival institutions will be greatly affected by attempts to mitigate their carbon footprint to meet the challenges of global climate change. This paper explores how recordkeeping practices may enhance or undermine the sustainability of archives. To enhance sustainability, it is a common practice to increase the efficiency of recordkeeping practices. However, increases to efficiency may lead to a phenomenon known as Jevons’ Paradox. Jevons’ Paradox occurs when improvements in efficiency to a system or process result in an increase in use (instead of a decrease) of a resource. The failure of the paperless office demonstrates Jevons’ Paradox, …

The Culture Of Skydiving, Steven Wade Jul 2011

The Culture Of Skydiving, Steven Wade

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

ABSTRACT

The culture of skydiving is made up of a community of individuals who regularly jump at a given drop zone. This culture places a high value on individual achievement, self-reliance, and adherence to routine, and it promotes a strong sense of community among its members. The relationships formed between skydivers through the common experience of skydiving go beyond the activity itself. Skydive Kentucky in Elizabethtown supports its community through several unique rites of passage as an individual gradually becomes a member of the group. This drop zone also hosts cookouts and card games for its regular members. Throughout this …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Birth Order In College Students' Academic Success, Shannara Williams Jul 2011

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Birth Order In College Students' Academic Success, Shannara Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between locus of control and birth order. Does your birth position predict your locus of control? Also, does birth order have an effect on the academic achievement of college students (n=54)? A few subjects were disqualified from the study based on the fact that they were the only child. A demographics survey was designed to determine the academic success based on grade point average. The Rotter's Locus of Control survey was used to determine the locus of control of the college students. Neither hypothesis investigated yielded the predicted results. This …

Videogames And Friendships: Contextual Factors That Influence The Willingness To Aggress Following The Playing Of A Violent Videogame, Jonathan Charles Edwin Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Participants (N = 73) in the present research were assigned to play a violent videogame (Super Smash Brothers) with either a supportive or an ambivalent friend. Orthogonal to this manipulation, participants were assigned to play the game either competitively or cooperatively. Subsequent aggression toward their friend was assessed by measuring participants' competitive or cooperative behavior in a Prisoner's Dilemma game. Results revealed no differences in aggression as a function of friendship type or game strategy, although means were in predicted directions. The influence of context on exposure to violent media is discussed, as are issues of power and …

Unintended Social And Economic Consequences Resulting From The Implementation Of New Construction Technologies In The Developing World, Andrew J. South

Theses and Dissertations

One of the key components of international development is to provide adequate shelter for citizens of developing countries. This is often accomplished by governmental, non- governmental, and private organizations that seek to lower the cost, increase the quality, and expand the availability of safe, sustainable housing through the use of innovative technologies. These new technologies can affect the social and/or economic structure within communities. This paper is a case study resulting from the construction of a seventy-one-home village, including infrastructure, near Yogyakarta, Indonesia by a foreign, aid-based non-governmental organization (NGO). The village was relocated less than two kilometers from its …

Rate Changes In Risky Behavior & The Role Of Sibling Influence, Julian Bajczyk

Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on research performed in 2006 by Laura Argys, Daniel Rees, Susan Averett, and Benjama Witoonchart. The 2006 study investigated relationship between the birth order and an adolescent's likelihood of engaging in certain risky behaviors. For the purpose of this study these behaviors include things like drug use, sexual activity and violent or antisocial offenses. The initial study found a trend implicating that adolescents with older siblings more likely to engage in certain risky behaviors than adolescents who did not have older siblings (eldest and only children). The Argys, et al. study used data collected from the …

An Analysis Of Graduate School Recruitment Via Website Resources, Dylan K. Matsumori Jul 2011

An Analysis Of Graduate School Recruitment Via Website Resources, Dylan K. Matsumori

Theses and Dissertations

Institutions of higher learning are experiencing increased difficulty managing the quantity and quality of their graduate student populations (Kallio, 1995). Currently the most important informational resource for potential students engaged in the graduate school search process is the Web (Huddleston & Drexel, 2006). Previous research has focused on things such as website design and technological advances but has failed to address the core content needed by applicants (Huddleston & Drexel, 2006). Research has focused on website design from the perspective of administrators and web designers with little consideration of the individuals who are in the process of applying to or …

Quality Of Life In Patients With Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: The Impact Of Psychiatric Disorder Severity, Fear Of Pain, And Pain Catastrophizing, Katherine Elizabeth Hadlandsmyth Jul 2011

Quality Of Life In Patients With Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: The Impact Of Psychiatric Disorder Severity, Fear Of Pain, And Pain Catastrophizing, Katherine Elizabeth Hadlandsmyth

Dissertations

Patients who present in medical settings with persistent chest pain in the absence of identifiable cardiac cause (Fleet & Beitman, 1997) may be diagnosed with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP). NCCP is a common, costly condition that may result in impaired quality of life (e.g., Eslick et al. 2003; Wong et al., 2002). Theories of NCCP (Mayou, 1998; White & Raffa, 2004) suggest that patients who react to NCCP with fear and thoughts of catastrophic consequences may avoid activities that elicit cardiac sensations. The daily behavioral impact of avoiding cardiorespiratory cues may limit quality of life due to activity avoidance. The …

Delineating Roles Within The Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jul 2011

Delineating Roles Within The Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Dr. Husain went on to speak of the role of the microfinance industry in Pakistan where the distinction between the microfinance banks and microfinance institutions was deliberately designed to maintain a wedge between deposit mobilizers and social mobilizers to safeguard the poor against charlatans. The idea was to ensure that nobody but licensed deposit-takers could take money from the poor. Incidentally, he also mentioned that Pakistan was the first to make regulation for the sector. Bangladesh and India were against regulations at that stage as it was felt that regulation would hamper the growth of the sector. The State Bank …

Division Of Labor And Marital Quality In China, Lexie Y. Pfeifer Jul 2011

Division Of Labor And Marital Quality In China, Lexie Y. Pfeifer

Theses and Dissertations

Research done in the United States has linked household division of labor to marital quality. Research shows that satisfaction with division of labor is associated with greater marital happiness. There is minimal research in other countries on the relationship between division of labor and marital quality. China, with a history of gender inequality and emerging women's rights, makes an ideal setting for examining the relationship between division of labor and marital quality. In addition to measuring the influence of division of labor and satisfaction with division of labor on marital satisfaction, this study includes a scale on childcare related tasks. …

The Effect Of Elementary After-School Participation On The Transition To Middle School, Grant Scanland Adamz

Theses and Dissertations

This case study takes an in-depth look at what type of students transition from elementary to middle school 21st Century Community Learning Center programs. Using binary logistic regressions, I identify key characteristics that predict whether or not a student will continue to attend the program after they transition to a new school and then discuss how to improve the attendance of after-school programs. Moreover, this case study also identifies how different school program environments serve different types of students in two cohorts starting in fifth grade. Middle school context moderates the effects of other variables that are predictive of participation …
