We Can Only Be “Mine-Safe” When We Are “Mine-Free”, Tamar Gabelnick
We Can Only Be “Mine-Safe” When We Are “Mine-Free”, Tamar Gabelnick
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Despite the fact that the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction makes no mention of the term “mine-safe,” it is still a frequent term used by mine-contaminated states. However, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines maintains that in order for states to be safe from the dangers posed by mines, all mined areas must be cleared—not only those areas which are deemed to pose an immediate threat.

Land Rights In Mine-Affected Countries, Jon Unruh, Gabrielle Chaizy, Sharmala Naidoo
Land Rights In Mine-Affected Countries, Jon Unruh, Gabrielle Chaizy, Sharmala Naidoo
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Land rights in conflict and post-conflict environments is an increasing area of concern within humanitarian and development communities. When conflicts end, land rights may be threatened, especially for women, subsistence farmers and other marginalized populations. Secure land rights are, therefore, a critical issue for humanitarian response, sustainable peace-building and longer-term economic recovery, particularly in countries where agriculture is key to livelihoods. While mine-action activities such as priority-setting, survey and clearance bring mine-action organizations into direct contact with land-rights issues, most tend to avoid these issues. This article looks at how mine-action organizations can better address land issues.
The Peco Wolverine: Evolution Of A Demining Area-Preparation Tool, Ronald Collins, Thomas Henderson
The Peco Wolverine: Evolution Of A Demining Area-Preparation Tool, Ronald Collins, Thomas Henderson
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
This article discusses the development of an essential mine-action tool: a preparation system for demining areas thick with vegetation. After covering the need for the technology, the authors explain how a commercially available product evolved into a highly capable remote-controlled vegetation cutter for demining, and how the manufacturer subsequently adopted the modified system for the commercial marketplace. Modifications made to the PECO are discussed in depth, and an accompanying analysis provides interesting insight into how the PECO project became a success for those in need of an efficient and effective brush-clearing device.

Land-Release Information Management: Advocating For A Collaborative Approach, Aurora Martinez, Daniel Eriksson
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
For land release to become more efficient and less dangerous, operations on the ground need accurate information. Collaboration between information management and operational planning will help increase safety while working toward releasing more land. The most challenging aspect of land release is the identification of boundaries around contaminated areas, and using new information technologies will aid not only operation managers in the area, but also senior managers setting long-term goals.

Crisis In Education: A Call To Act, Debra Walker Emery
Crisis In Education: A Call To Act, Debra Walker Emery
Dissertations
The current education system in the United States is riddled with difficulties which include an increasing demand for qualified teachers and persistently high attrition rates. Teachers are prone to low job satisfaction, low self-efficacy, as well as increased stress and burnout. Although these problems are widely discussed in the literature, scant intervention research is available. Additionally, existing interventions miss two key elements that may be especially relevant to the challenges faced by educators: acceptance and values. The current study examined the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for reducing teacher burnout through a day-long professional development workshop. Thirty-five teachers …

Influences Of Openness And Identity Style On Orientations To Religious Belief: A Proposed Integrative Model, J. Robert Parker
Influences Of Openness And Identity Style On Orientations To Religious Belief: A Proposed Integrative Model, J. Robert Parker
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Religions differ in their relative emphasis on beliefs and rituals. Christianity is a belief-oriented religion, but Christians differ in their orientation to beliefs. People with an Intrinsic orientation live by their beliefs, while those with an Extrinsic orientation use the religious group for other ends, such as networking. High “Questers” explore beliefs. Combinations of orientations were hypothesized to fall into patterns and be influenced by Openness to Experience (Five Factor Model; Costa & McCrae, 1992) and by identity styles (Berzonsky, 1989). People with an Informational identity style explore important ideas before accepting or rejecting them. Those with a Normative identity …

Person-Organization Fit As A Barrier To Employee Creativity, Angela M. Farabee
Person-Organization Fit As A Barrier To Employee Creativity, Angela M. Farabee
Dissertations
The relationship between person-organization fit (PO fit) and creativity was investigated in this study. Based on the attraction-selection-attrition framework (Schneider, 1987), over time organizational members become more homogeneous (e.g., on cultural values) which may be less conducive for individual employee creativity. Person-organization fit, defined as congruence on the non-creativity values from the competing values model (Quinn, 1988), was hypothesized to negatively relate to creativity. This had partial support for internal processes value fit when considering individuals in a low creative culture, otherwise it was unsupported. It was also hypothesized and moderately supported that fit on creativity/innovation value would be positively …

Modern-Day Slavery And Human Trafficking: An Overlooked Issue, Michelle Kuhl
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Slavery and human trafficking have become a widespread problem across the globe today. Practices including debt bondage, forced labor, sexual slavery, and more are occurring in every country, including here in the United States. It has been widely overlooked, and although there are several laws and declarations outlawing the practice of slavery, it still occurs. Neoliberalism and globalization are considered in this thesis as contributors to modern-day slavery and trafficking in persons. Additionally, specific case studies of a few different nations are provided to clarify the topic and help the reader create a personal connection to the issue. A lot …
