A Proposal To Make Grain Storage Financially Feasible, David L. Garrett Aug 2011

A Proposal To Make Grain Storage Financially Feasible, David L. Garrett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The United States has a National Oil Reserve but not a food reserve. Just as the oil reserve is designed to buffer unforeseen disruptions in the critical supply, the nation should also have a food reserve for the same purpose.

The United States and other developed nations have little or no food reserve beyond the typical demands between growing seasons. Marvelous production achievements in agriculture beginning in the early 1960s and known as the “Green Revolution” are now leveling off. Food production, suffering from such negative side effects as reduced water tables, is being outstripped by population growth (Bourne, 2009).

War, Gender, And The Polarization Process: Gender As An Intervening Variable In Attitude Formation Toward Outgroups, Kristen Kay Dawson Aug 2011

War, Gender, And The Polarization Process: Gender As An Intervening Variable In Attitude Formation Toward Outgroups, Kristen Kay Dawson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

War and the consequences of war have long been a subject of study in the field of political science. In addition, much debate and disagreement has centered around which factors are most important in determining the onset of war. Based on previous literature that has established fairly consistent gender differences with respect to the gendered role of warfare (Goldstein, 2001; Marini, 1990), I speculate that gender may also influence polarization attitudes, which are thought to act as precursors to war. Whenever the attitudes of ingroups rapidly polarize and their members become extremely fearful of an outgroup, begin to dehumanize outgroup …

Legal Fences In Nebraska, J. David Aiken Aug 2011

Legal Fences In Nebraska, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

This week I received two telephone calls asking “What is a legal fence in Nebraska?” Our recent fencing statute - which requires all landowners to split the cost of a division fence 50/50, is probably the source of this interest. So this newsletter begins with a brief history of the legal fence’s role in Nebraska fence law, and then lists the legal fence provisions in the 2011 Nebraska fence statutes.

Reaching An Agreement: Effects Of Tv Violence On Youth, Brittany T. Rawlings Aug 2011

Reaching An Agreement: Effects Of Tv Violence On Youth, Brittany T. Rawlings

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Over the course of a year, a child will spend 1,500 hours watching television, a significant amount when compared to the 900 hours he or she will spend in school (Herr, 2007). Violence is one of the dominating messages disseminated through the sensation of television, which plays an active role in entertaining and impacting the lives of today‘s young audience. Because of its prevalence, violence on TV has grown to be a controversial issue on which several studies have been conducted since the 1950s. This thesis explores past research and takes a critical look at studies conducted within the last …

The Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative: A Critical Realist Case Study, Shawna M. Margesson Aug 2011

The Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative: A Critical Realist Case Study, Shawna M. Margesson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized the ontological and epistemological foundations of critical realism posed by Margaret Archer (2000) to deepen social work's understanding of collaboration. Through the use of Danermark et al.'s (2002) stages of explanatory research based on critical realism, the author found that agential and structural interactions of the Colorado Community Organizing Collaborative emerged. These findings illustrate that critical realism can be used in social work research to broaden the discipline's perception of human and environment. Archer's (2000) grounding of agency in three orders of reality, that practice is pivotal and morphogenesis is transformative aids in rediscovering how structure constrains …

Settlers And Immigrants In The Formation Of American Law, Aziz Rana Aug 2011

Settlers And Immigrants In The Formation Of American Law, Aziz Rana

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This paper argues that the early American republic is best understood as a constitutional experiment in “settler empire,” and that related migration policies played a central role in shaping collective identity and structures of authority. Initial colonists, along with their 19th century descendants, viewed society as grounded in an ideal of freedom that emphasized continuous popular mobilization and direct economic and political decision-making. However, many settlers believed that this ideal required Indian dispossession and the coercive use of dependent groups, most prominently slaves, in order to ensure that they themselves had access to property and did not have to engage …

Through content analysis, this thesis analyzes relevant wilderness therapy programs and residential treatment centers specifically designed for at-risk youth. More specifically, this study is an applied analysis. The results provide primary care-givers with a guide for assessing programs before their adolescent continues down the path to juvenile incarceration. The study analyzed 20 wilderness therapy programs and 19 residential treatment centers through a series of exploratory questions derived from empirical research concerning the effective and ethically sound treatment of at-risk youth.
The five research questions are as follows:
1) What aspects of the program promote and include family involvement?

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley Aug 2011

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley

All Theses

Modern college students traverse the boundaries of traditional literacy daily. Maturing alongside Web 2.0 and multimodal social networking, these young people tweet, blog, email, film, photograph, illustrate, hyperlink, and compose their lives regardless of formal instruction. Therefore rhetorically analyzing a student's recreational play with image, video, audio, and oral mediums often proves helpful for writing instructors who wish to better mentor and engage the communicative capacities of those born in the late 20th century and after. Yet few educators have actively pursued this line of inquiry over the last couple of decades. Many continue to favor traditional pairing of academic …

All Theses

Research supports numerous benefits of volunteering, yet individuals with intellectual disabilities do not participate in volunteering as frequently as people without intellectual disabilities. According to the Leisure Ability Model, leisure education can be an effective way to promote recreation participation through volunteering. The purpose of this study is to examine effectiveness of a leisure education program designed to support independent volunteer participation by students enrolled in a university LIFE program. The future intentions of participation in volunteer activities and attitudes towards volunteer participation of four university LIFE students were examined before, during, and after the leisure education program using single …

The Theory And Practice Of Third Wave Regional Economic Development Strategies, Lori Dickes Aug 2011

The Theory And Practice Of Third Wave Regional Economic Development Strategies, Lori Dickes

All Dissertations

In an environment of globalization and rapid technological change, entrepreneurship and innovation have become important objectives of state, regional, and local economic development policy. Entrepreneurial focused economic development strategies target state and regional efforts towards policies -such as cluster development, business incubators, regional trade associations, and developing local entrepreneurs and small businesses. If it is imperative that states and regions pursue these strategies, researchers must begin to classify the types of programs that states and localities are using, as well as analyze and document the impact of these policies on knowledge economy variables. This research proposes to add three new …

Substantive Representation Of Women: The Case Of Ghana's Domestic Violence Law Of 2007, Patrick Tandoh-Offin Aug 2011

Substantive Representation Of Women: The Case Of Ghana's Domestic Violence Law Of 2007, Patrick Tandoh-Offin

All Dissertations

This study investigates the role of civil society organizations (CSOs), especially gender-based groups in increasing the 'substantive' representation or the perspectives, views, and concerns of women in public policy-making in emerging democracies. In the last 30 years, calls for equality in the representation of women have received a boost mainly because of the disparity between the proportions of women in national populations and in legislatures. In Ghana where women are about 50 percent of the population, women constitute only 8.7 percent of the 230-member parliament as of January 2009. Such disparities produce critical implications for women's empowerment and participation in …

State Policy Change: Revenue Decoupling In The Electricity Market, Kytson Mcneil Aug 2011

State Policy Change: Revenue Decoupling In The Electricity Market, Kytson Mcneil

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
The study seeks to answer the question, why are states adopting revenue decoupling in the electricity market, by investigating the relationship between policy adoption and attributes of the electricity market, the structure of the state utility commissions, and the political climate of the state. The study examines the period 1978-2008. Two econometric models, the marginal risk set model and the conditional risk set model, are estimated to predict the influence of covariates on the probability of the state adopting revenue decoupling in the electricity market. The models are both variants of the Cox proportional hazard model and use different …

Stewardship In Health Policy And Its Relevance To Pakistan, Asaad Ahmed Nafees, Parvez Nayani Aug 2011

Stewardship In Health Policy And Its Relevance To Pakistan, Asaad Ahmed Nafees, Parvez Nayani

Community Health Sciences

Since the concept of stewardship in health care first appeared in World Health Report 2000 there has been very limited discussion in the academia about its implications. In the present paper we revisit this concept and review the literature that has been written about it. We have particularly focused on the role of stewardship in health policy of Pakistan. We also highlight the improvement that stewardship can bring about in the health policy of Pakistan and the possible constraints that might be faced during its implementation phase. The literature available is on the concept of stewardship in health policy. The …

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang Aug 2011

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I use a Marxist framework centred on the mode of production to conceptually analyze the changing stratification structure in today’s China with a focus on the changing nature of rural-urban inequality. As the state-managed tributary mode of production, once dominant under socialism, is being gradually eclipsed by the reviving petty-commodity mode of production and the newly emerged capitalist mode of production, both of which are market-based and enable the transfer of surplus from labour to capital, a new set of mechanisms are creating and sustaining rural-urban inequality in China. Rural-urban inequality – although still significant in its magnitude – is …

A Road To Smarter Infrastructure In Asia, Curtis S. Chin, John A. Donaldson Aug 2011

A Road To Smarter Infrastructure In Asia, Curtis S. Chin, John A. Donaldson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

China's infrastructure building program used to be the envy of the world, and in some respects it still is. Yet economists, investors and now China's own citizens are worried about diminishing returns, while incidents such as last month's Wenzhou high-speed rail crash raise questions about the durability of China's investments.
