Nebraska And “The Great Recession” - Jobs And Income: 2007-2009, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

Recovery may be seen as weak, but “The Great Recession” which officially began with a second consecutive quarter of negative economic growth in December, 2007, officially ended in June, 2009.

The effect of the recession on employment was dramatic and continues through today, with a seasonally adjusted national unemployment rate at 9.2 percent as of July, 2011, according to the National Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment remains at or above ten percent in seven states.

Nebraska fared better than most states during the recession. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate never exceeded five percent and is currently at 4.2 percent …

Code-Switching And Language Change In Tunisia, Lotfi Sayahi Aug 2011

Code-Switching And Language Change In Tunisia, Lotfi Sayahi

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This article quantitatively studies the patterns of Tunisian Arabic/French code-switching and the possible implications for contact-induced change in the Tunisian dialect. The purpose is to account for the extent of the occurrence of code-switching across gender lines and levels of education and assess its role in the interference from French into Arabic, both at the lexical and structural levels. Recorded semi-directed sociolinguistic interviews with twelve speakers are examined for type and frequency of code-switching and use of French borrowings.

Results show that education plays a role in distinguishing the group with a higher education from the group with only a …

Farmland Leasing In South Dakota 2011: Emphasis On Share Lease Arrangements, Nelly Bourlion, Larry Janssen, Burton Pflueger Aug 2011

Farmland Leasing In South Dakota 2011: Emphasis On Share Lease Arrangements, Nelly Bourlion, Larry Janssen, Burton Pflueger

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Farmland leasing is an important source of capital and method of controlling land resources in production agriculture allowing land owners and tenants flexibility to enhance, maintain or expand their income-generating capacity. In this report, we (1) provide information on the importance of farmland leasing in South Dakota, and (2) update information on crop-share leasing and hay-share leasing arrangements in South Dakota, based on a survey conducted in 2011. Farmland leasing is important in South Dakota where over 70% of farm operators are involved in farmland leasing and nearly two-fifths of agricultural land acres are leased. Leased farmland acres comprise even …

The Trend Of The Returns To Educations In Urban China During 1988 To 2002, Shuang Zheng Aug 2011

The Trend Of The Returns To Educations In Urban China During 1988 To 2002, Shuang Zheng

All Theses

China underwent a significant social and economic transformation starting from the 1980s. The transition to market oriented economy brought change to the market of human capital. Using Mincer-type equation, we analyzed the returns to education in China using the data from the Chinese Household Income Project Survey conducted in the years 1988, 1995 and 2002, which covers the most interesting period. Although the returns to education were found generally lower than world average, a significant and steady increase in the returns was observed. Actually, the returns to each schooling year were more than doubled in the fourteen years. This increase …

Parent Efficacy And Parent Involvement In Parents Of Preschool Children, Jennifer Murkli Aug 2011

Parent Efficacy And Parent Involvement In Parents Of Preschool Children, Jennifer Murkli

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between parent involvement and parent efficacy in parents of preschool children. Twenty parents from a suburban, a predominantly White private preschool participated in the study. Parent self-reports of involvement and efficacy beliefs as they pertain to their preschooler's learning and development were assessed. On average, parents reported medium parent efficacy and medium parent involvement. Results of the study demonstrated a significant relationship between parent involvement and parent efficacy. The relationship was moderate with a positive direction. Thus, the relationship demonstrated to a modest degree that greater parent efficacy is related to greater parent involvement, …

The Right Side Of The Coin: Focus On The Human Rights Of People, Not The Failure Of States, Brooke Ackerly Aug 2011

The Right Side Of The Coin: Focus On The Human Rights Of People, Not The Failure Of States, Brooke Ackerly

Human Rights & Human Welfare

US policy toward failed states should focus on strengthening civil society and social movements so that people are better able to hold their leaders accountable.

The language of “failed states” disassociates foreign policy from international dialogue about human rights. Instead, “failed states” is a contemporary sound bite that connotes a lack of sovereignty, suggesting that intervention would not violate national sovereignty because in a failed state, there is none. Of course, we could have a similar cynicism about the use of human rights concerns to justify invasion. Certainly, states have tried to choose when to reference international human rights norms …

Community Life In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Current Perceptions And Future Strategies: 2011 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, Connie Reimers-Hild Aug 2011

Community Life In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Current Perceptions And Future Strategies: 2011 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, Connie Reimers-Hild

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Recent community level Census data show that most small communities in Nebraska experienced population decline since 2000. However, most of the larger communities experienced population growth during this same time period. Various economic development strategies could be employed by communities to grow their population and economies. Given these conditions, how do rural Nebraskans feel about their community? Are they satisfied with the services provided by their community? Are they planning to move from their community in the next year? Have these views changed over the past sixteen years? How do rural Nebraskans believe various economic development strategies would impact their …

Immobilizing Conceptual Debates, Jonas Claes

Human Rights & Human Welfare

In “Think Again: Failed States,” James Traub argues that “state failure” is a failed concept. Prioritizing efforts to prevent or address state fragility, weakness, or failure may seem impractical given the conceptual breadth of this systemic challenge. Like globalization, human security, or climate change, state failure contains so many aspects that it becomes analytically useless. But the need to rethink this garbage-can concept—everything can be thrown in—does not keep us from addressing the litany of well-understood challenges subsumed within.

Perceptual Scale Expansion: An Efficient Angular Coding Strategy For Locomotor Space, Frank H. Durgin, Z. Li Aug 2011

Perceptual Scale Expansion: An Efficient Angular Coding Strategy For Locomotor Space, Frank H. Durgin, Z. Li

Psychology Faculty Works

Whereas most sensory information is coded on a logarithmic scale, linear expansion of a limited range may provide a more efficient coding for the angular variables important to precise motor control. In four experiments, we show that the perceived declination of gaze, like the perceived orientation of surfaces, is coded on a distorted scale. The distortion seems to arise from a nearly linear expansion of the angular range close to horizontal/straight ahead and is evident in explicit verbal and nonverbal measures (Experiments 1 and 2), as well as in implicit measures of perceived gaze direction (Experiment 4). The theory is …

Marketing Margins Of Strawberries 2006-2010 Shipping Point-Terminal-Retail Price, Matej Mikle Barat Aug 2011

Marketing Margins Of Strawberries 2006-2010 Shipping Point-Terminal-Retail Price, Matej Mikle Barat

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines vertical price relationships for fresh strawberries. Specifically, the focus is on three stages of the vertical chain. The first stage is the shipping point. Shipping points represent major strawberry production regions and are the closest price point to the farm. The second stage is the terminal market. Terminal markets are wholesale markets in major US cities. The third stage is the retail level. Retail level prices are measured as average supermarket prices in the same cities for which terminal market prices are available. Using weekly data, markup equations are estimated from upstream to downstream levels of the …

Radical Negativity: Music Education For Social Justice, Peter Mclaren Aug 2011

Radical Negativity: Music Education For Social Justice, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Edgar Bauer, hurt by some chance remark, turned the tables and ridiculed the English snobs. Marx launched an enthusiastic eulogy on German science and music—no other country, he said, would have been capable of producing such masters of music as Beethoven, Mozart, Handel and Haydn, and the Englishmen who had no music were in reality far below the Germans who had been prevented hitherto only by their miserable political and economic conditions from accomplishing any great practical work, but who would yet outclass all other nations. So fluently I have never heard him speak English.

Muslim Social Entrepreneurship: Religious Underpinnings And Modern Applications, Scott Jackson

Student Works

In 2010, the Wolfensohn Center for Development issued a report entitled "Social Entrepreneurship in the Middle East: Toward Sustainable Development for the Next Generation." In this report, the authors presented a dilemma: "Although young people across the region face a diverse and complex set of challenges, the core of the struggle is defined by a lack of promising career trajectories and, more generally, by limited economic opportunity." With close to 25 percent of the Middle East's young people ages 15 to 24 unemployed and prospects for a "youth bulge" over the next decade, this is a crisis of critical proportions …

Generic Results For Establishing The Asymptotic Size Of Confidence Sets And Tests, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xu Cheng, Patrik Guggenberger Aug 2011

Generic Results For Establishing The Asymptotic Size Of Confidence Sets And Tests, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xu Cheng, Patrik Guggenberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper provides a set of results that can be used to establish the asymptotic size and/or similarity in a uniform sense of confidence sets and tests. The results are generic in that they can be applied to a broad range of problems. They are most useful in scenarios where the pointwise asymptotic distribution of a test statistic has a discontinuity in its limit distribution. The results are illustrated in three examples. These are: (i) the conditional likelihood ratio test of Moreira (2003) for linear instrumental variables models with instruments that may be weak, extended to the case of heteroskedastic …

Similar-On-The-Boundary Tests For Moment Inequalities Exist, But Have Poor Power, Donald W.K. Andrews Aug 2011

Similar-On-The-Boundary Tests For Moment Inequalities Exist, But Have Poor Power, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper shows that moment inequality tests that are asymptotically similar on the boundary of the null hypothesis exist, but have poor power. Hence, existing tests in the literature, which are asymptotically non-similar on the boundary, are not deficient. The results are obtained by first establishing results for the finite-sample multivariate normal one-sided testing problem. Then, these results are shown to have implications for more general moment inequality tests that are used in the literature on partial identification.

A Conditional-Heteroskedasticity-Robust Confidence Interval For The Autoregressive Parameter, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger Aug 2011

A Conditional-Heteroskedasticity-Robust Confidence Interval For The Autoregressive Parameter, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper introduces a new confidence interval (CI) for the autoregressive parameter (AR) in an AR(1) model that allows for conditional heteroskedasticity of general form and AR parameters that are less than or equal to unity. The CI is a modification of Mikusheva’s (2007a) modification of Stock’s (1991) CI that employs the least squares estimator and a heteroskedasticity-robust variance estimator. The CI is shown to have correct asymptotic size and to be asymptotically similar (in a uniform sense). It does not require any tuning parameters. No existing procedures have these properties. Monte Carlo simulations show that the CI performs well …

The Demonetization Of Gold: Transactions And The Change In Control, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik Aug 2011

The Demonetization Of Gold: Transactions And The Change In Control, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Three models of a monetary economy are considered, in order to show the effects of a gold demonetization: the first with a gold money, the second with demonetized gold but no central bank, and the third with demonetized gold, but with a central bank. The distinctions between ownership and control are discussed.

Information Aggregation, Investment, And Managerial Incentives, Elias Albagli, Christian Hellwig, Aleh Tsyvinski Aug 2011

Information Aggregation, Investment, And Managerial Incentives, Elias Albagli, Christian Hellwig, Aleh Tsyvinski

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study the interplay of share prices and firm decisions when share prices aggregate and convey noisy information about fundamentals to investors and managers. First, we show that the informational feedback between the firm’s share price and its investment decisions leads to a systematic premium in the firm’s share price relative to expected dividends. Noisy information aggregation leads to excess price volatility, over-valuation of shares in response to good news, and undervaluation in response to bad news. By optimally increasing its exposure to fundamental risks when the market price conveys good news, the firm shifts its dividend risk to the …

Irving Fisher, Debt Deflation And Crises, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is the 100th anniversary of Irving Fisher’s 1911 book The Purchasing Power of Money . But, more important than that, it is a good time, during the current financial turmoil, to reconsider some of his theories again, in light of current events. And I think that some of his theories about variations in the purchasing power of money are very important today, have been underappreciated, and are worthy of considering anew.
