Social Interactions In The Labor Market, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner, John A. Bishop

We examine theoretically and empirically social interactions in labor markets and how policy prescriptions can change dramatically when there are social interactions present. Spillover effects increase labor supply and conformity effects make labor supply perfectly inelastic at a reference group average. The demand for a good may also be influenced by either a spillover effect or a conformity effect. Positive spillover increases the demand for the good with interactions, and a conformity effect makes the demand curve pivot to become less price sensitive. Similar social interactions effects appear in the associated derived demands for labor. Individual and community factors may …

The purposes of this study were to determine the public relations and marketing techniques used by assisted living facilities (ALFs) to attract and retain senior residents, investigate the perception of effectiveness in PR and marketing practices among assisted living administrators and identify the role of community relations within ALFs. Consistent with previous research, interviews and surveys with assisted living professionals reveal communities operate using traditional techniques and channels including, but not limited to, newspaper ads, facility tours, community events, word-of-mouth promotion, direct-mail marketing/materials, newsletters, facility websites and professional referral development. The separation between anthropology and geography is a factor of time, and the divergent meanderings of disciplinary histories. As Larry Grossman once argued, “Cultural geographers and anthropologists are like brothers separated in infancy and taught to speak different languages” (1977:126). In many ways, this is quite true. Anthropology and geography actually do share many roots and intellectual origins, even if these connections aren't exactly emphasized in the respective disciplinary histories. Interestingly, if there is one crucial common ancestor that American geographers and anthropologists share, it is none other than one of the icons of North American anthropology: Franz Boas.

The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which positive psychology can impact the educational system. Twenty-three second grade students enrolled in Berlin Community School, located in Berlin New Jersey participated in this study. All students were enrolled in a regular education classroom and assumed to be learning at the appropriate age group level. The Piers-Harris 2 Self-Concept Scale was used to measure student's self-esteem as a pre-test and a post-test assessment. The experimental group received the implementation of the Bucket Filler Lesson plans in hopes that their self-esteem would improve upon completion of the lessons. The …

This theoretical study is an exploration of the use of ego psychological and cognitive behavioral interventions as an integrative treatment for the beginning phase of schizophrenia known as first episode psychosis. Schizophrenia develops as first episode psychosis in young adults who are navigating complex developmental tasks. Current research on schizophrenia treatment indicates that appropriate and prompt care following first episode psychosis improves prognosis and allows individuals to regain and maintain developmentally appropriate levels of functioning. This study explored the ways in which lesbian adult women, who have been rejected by their mothers because of their sexuality and maintain relationships with them, understand and manage those relationships as well as their motivation for maintaining the relationships. Since limited research has focused on adult lesbian women who have maintained a relationship with a mother who rejects their sexuality, a qualitative, exploratory study was chosen as an appropriate research design. The research reported in this paper was undertaken to examine and evaluate the usefulness of a particular support group for mothers suffering symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD). The new DSM-V, scheduled for release in 2013, will reflect some changes in our understanding of this affliction, including an extension of the onset time period of symptoms. Broadening the diagnostic criteria has implications for both screening and treatment. Literature on treatment tells us that this population of mothers is underserved, due to lack of access to treatment and/or poor diagnostic screening and detection of PPD. This study is an investigation of the experiences of International Students who were enrolled at a college in the Northeastern United States during the 2007-2008 academic year. Participants in this qualitative study were asked to describe their experiences of making and maintaining meaningful connections with friends and family from their home country, fellow International Students, American students, and diaspora populations. Findings of the study provided rich examples of how the participants made and maintained meaningful connections as well as their thoughts and feelings about those connections. This exploratory study was undertaken to investigate the experience of fathers upon the receipt of the news that their newborn baby had been given a diagnosis of Down syndrome. Skotko's (2005a, b) study revealed that mothers of children with Down syndrome had predominantly negative postnatal experiences. Mothers reported feeling anxious, frightened, guilty, angry, and in a few cases suicidal. I gathered information from interviews with 13 fathers. Interview questions were designed to explore the fathers' experiences of postnatal support. Neurobiological Research That Confirms Freud's Trauma Theory And Its Implications For Treatment With Children Diagnosed With Reactive Attachment Disorders, Carla Gerber-Weintraub

This theoretical thesis argues that children diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder are best served with psychoanalytic treatment. Four major components are examined to support this argument. First, the progression of reactive attachment disorder criteria set forth in the 1980 DSM-III up through a recent DSM V proposal are reviewed. Secondly, a history and development of Freud's trauma theory is discussed. Thirdly, neurobiological research of the social brain and limbic system that confirm certain hypotheses of Freud's trauma theory are outlined. Lastly, current treatment modalities used with children diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder are scrutinized. Each of these components leads to …

The collection and management of digital resources dominated collection development and management literature produced during 2004–8. Themes covered the changing nature of local collections, redefining collection management responsibilities and practices, cooperation and collaboration, and collection assessment and evaluation. The literature reflected the struggle to manage a vast array of resources while library budgets stagnated. While publishers continued to offer more bundles of electronic publications, librarians responded with strategies to collaborate and negotiate for feasible pricing structures. Recent developments of policing in Ireland have seen a shift towards local crime prevention initiatives through local partnerships. The principle aim of this study is to explore the effects of the partnership model of policing with the recent introduction of Joint Policing Committees (JPCs). This dissertation seeks to examine the opinions of members of JPCs towards this model. The research employed a qualitative methodology obtained through semi-structured interviews of JPC members and observational studies. There is an increasing need to understand the processes in which key decisions are made within the criminal justice system. While women in the Irish prison system are still very much in the minority they are the fastest growing population in prison and are currently experiencing overcrowding unknown in living memory in Irish prisons. It is too soon to comprehensively examine the origins of the recent policy decision to retrofit bunk beds and dormitories in Ireland’s largest women’s prison (Dóchas Centre) and what other possible solutions were explored, for example, why a proposed new facility was cancelled.
