A Sequential Monte Carlo Approach For Online Stock Market Prediction Using Hidden Markov Models, Ahani E. Bridget, O. Abass

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) algorithm prediction approach is developed based on joint probability distribution in hidden Markov Models (HMM). SMC methods, a general class of Monte Carlo methods, are typically used for sampling from sequences of distributions and simple examples of these algorithms are found extensively throughout the tracking and signal processing literature. Recent developments indicate that these techniques have much more general applicability and can be applied very effectively to statistical inference problems. D’Amico, Neilands & Zambarano (2001) showed how the SPSS MANOVA procedure can be used to conduct power calculations for research designs. This article demonstrates a simple way of entering data required for power calculations into SPSS and provides examples that supplement those given by D’Amico, Neilands & Zambarano.

A Pooled Two-Sample Median Test Based On Density Estimation, Vadim Y. Bichutskiy

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A new method based on density estimation is proposed for medians of two independent samples. The test controls the probability of Type I error and is at least as powerful as methods widely used in statistical practice. The method can be implemented using existing libraries in R.

Azzalini (1994) proposed a first order Markov chain for binary data. Azzalini’s model is extended for ordinal data and introduces a second order model. Further, the test statistics are developed and the power of the test is determined. An application using real data is also presented.

The Greater Northwest Arkansas Regional Economic Development Strategy identified four priority areas where the region needs to collaborate around specific goals to enhance the overall community. Regional success in Northwest Arkansas will therefore depend on the success of specific goals being achieved in the areas of Infrastructure, Regional Economic Development, Community Vitality and Educational Excellence.

The online survey was distributed to employers through the Northwest Arkansas Community College Workforce Advisory Group, local Chambers of Commerce, Human Resources Professional Groups and other avenues. The survey received 119 respondents. The following report will describe the major findings of the survey.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore both instruction librarians' attitudes on teaching and how they identify themselves as teachers. Particular attention is to be paid to teaching librarians' views on the effectiveness of two types of instruction models: for-credit courses and course-integrated library instruction.

Design/methodology/approach – To investigate librarians' attitudes towards these two models, a survey was constructed targeting librarians who teach information literacy (IL).

Findings – The results indicate that there is an important relationship between the IL instruction model employed and feelings towards campus politics, perceived effectiveness of IL models, and librarians' self-identification as teachers.

Evolutionary approaches to the explanation of human behavior are often employed in hypotheses about the toleration and punishment of freeriders. Despite the explanatory potential of evolutionary perspectives, many such perspectives ignore the unique human factor that has influenced the economic, social, and political contexts within which, up until very recently in human existence, reactions to freeriding always occurred. This human factor is the role of cultural traditions (i.e., behaviors passed down from ancestors to descendants). While developmental theorists rely heavily on analysis of macro and micro economic theories and developmental sequencing, not much attention is paid to the undeniable linkage between the post-seventies liberalization of global economies and the rise of different kinds of religious fundamentalism. This article suggests that there is a strong connection between neoliberal economics and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. This study analyzes Martin Parr’s 2006 photobook, Mexico. Parr is a British documentary photographer best known for a direct photographic style that reflects upon “Englishness.” Mexico is his attempt to understand this foreign country via his camera. Mexico, as a research subject, is not a problem to solve but an opportunity to understand a photographer’s work.
