If there is one area in which science fiction has failed to quickly become historical fact, it is in the field of artificial intelligence (A.I.). While some continue to prophesy that machine minds that are indistinguishable from human ones are just around the corner, many others in the field have become far more skeptical. All the while, there have been at least a few who have consistently found the whole idea problematic for reasons unrelated to our technical abilities, in particular the implications A.I. seems to have for our understanding of human personhood. For example, in his 1993 book The …

How do you know if a prisoner is lying? His lips are moving. According to the Pew Center on the States, on January 1, 2010, one million six hundred twenty-one thousand two hundred and twelve human beings were living behind bars in the United States of America-incarcerated by a state or the federal government (2010). That is approximately one out of every one hundred Americans. In 1972, the total number was less than two hundred thousand (2010). The average annual cost to house an offender in the State of Washington is $36,000 (Washington State Department of Corrections, 2008). Assuming a …

Servant-Leadership In Action: How Mission, Vision, And Values Are Conveyed, Jennifer Bell, Codi Bolding, Mary Delgadillo
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Many corporate executives and business owners would agree that instilling the mission, vision, and values (MVV) throughout an organization can be a monumental task. Not only is it vital for leaders of an organization to communicate the MVV effectively to all staff, but also to engage its employees in the MVV. This research focused on an organization in the healthcare industry that uses the servant leadership model. The research question posed was, simply: How does the organization convey the mission, vision, and values throughout the organization?

Hesitating to act because the whole vision might not be achieved, or because others do not yet share it, is an attitude that only hinders progress. -M. K. Gandhi, epigraph of Swades: We, the People

Don’T Be Such A Downer: Using Positive Psychology To Enhance The Value Of Negative Feedback, Allison L. O'Malley, Jane B. Gregory
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Effective developmental feedback promotes a balanced and authentic view of employees' current state, thereby addressing strengths and weaknesses of employees. The authors address how organizations' increased emphasis on positivity can be reconciled with the delivery of negative feedback. Drawing on principles from positive psychology, the authors outline strategies managers can implement to increase the likelihood that negative feedback interventions will yield improved performance while promoting employee well-being.

Efficacy Of The Jesness Inventory-Revised Conduct Disorder And Oppositional Defiant Disorder Scales, Terry B. Pinsoneault, Frank R. Ezzo
Efficacy Of The Jesness Inventory-Revised Conduct Disorder And Oppositional Defiant Disorder Scales, Terry B. Pinsoneault, Frank R. Ezzo
Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice
The authors investigated the Conduct Disorder (JR-CD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (JR-ODD) scales developed for the Jesness Inventory-Revised. Participants included 340 youth aged 12 to 18 seen at a juvenile court diagnostic clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. The authors also investigated the previously existing Social Maladjustment (JR-SM) and Asocial Index (JR-ASO) scales. Participants were independently diagnosed as having CD, ODD, Disruptive Behavior Disorder NOS (a milder behavioral disorder), or no diagnosable behavioral disorder. Mean scores varied across the groups in the expected directions for all four scales. JR-CD and JR-ODD were better able to differentiate between their target groups and the …
The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance: A Reappraisal, Peter A. Metofe
The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance: A Reappraisal, Peter A. Metofe
Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice
The cognitive dissonance theory, as postulated by Festinger (1957), has undergone increased scrutiny since its development. Through a reappraisal of this theory as explicated by other researchers, specifically relying on extant and current research in this theory, coupled with recent developments, this paper provides a context for better understanding of how individuals experience cognitive dissonance and its implications for clinical practice.
Missing And Exploited Children In Jamaica: An Empirical Analysis, Lorna E. Grant
Missing And Exploited Children In Jamaica: An Empirical Analysis, Lorna E. Grant
Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice
This paper is an analysis of missing, abused, and exploited children in Jamaica. I examined the responses of advocate groups and the government to determine the steps to take to protect children who are most vulnerable. I collected data through interviews from the Police National Intelligence Bureau, the Office of the Children's Registry, the Office of Children Advocate, literature review, and the printed media (e.g., The Jamaica Gleaner, The Jamaica Observer, and The Jamaica Star).

Lntegration Of Psychology And Christianity: A Unique Challenge In Clinical Training, Mary A. Peterson
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
This article explores the challenges of training clinical psychology doctoral students in the integration of psychology and Christianity. Our training program is based on a competency model that includes the integration of psychology and Christianity as a specific area of clinical competence. Competence in integmtion is evident in the students' respect and empathy for clients as well as specific knowledge and skills in working from a faim perspective. Training in integration has unique challenges including the variability in practicum supervisors' knowledge and skill in working with religion as an aspect of diversity. Semester evaluations completed by both practicum supervisors and …

Leadership Style And Diversionary Theory Of Foreign Policy: The Use Of Diversionary Strategies By Middle Eastern Leaders During And In The Immediate Aftermath Of The Gulf War, Kilic Bugra Kanat
Political Science - Dissertations
In this dissertation, I address some limitations of the literature on the diversionary theory of war through some significant revisions. My revisions are intended to extend the scope and expand the content of the literature in order to transform the theory from a theory of war to a foreign policy theory. In addition, I try to contribute to the theoretical development of the literature by bringing the leader back into the diversionary theory and incorporating it into the current literature on foreign policy leadership studies. The dissertation focuses on Middle Eastern leaders who used diversionary strategies during the First Gulf …
Clinical Training In Explicitly Christian Doctoral Programs: Introduction To The Special Issue, Mark R. Mcminn, Peter C. Hill
Clinical Training In Explicitly Christian Doctoral Programs: Introduction To The Special Issue, Mark R. Mcminn, Peter C. Hill
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
This article serves as a brief introduction to this special journal issue on clinical training in doctoral psychology programs described as explicitly Christian. Seven doctoral programs are described by their respective Directors of Clinical Training (DCT) in this special issue. In this introductory paper, we identify four common themes found across the program descriptions: 1) the enthusiasm for respective training missions, 2) the transformation observed in students, 3) the intentional progression of training, and 4) the varied meanings of the term "integration."

Satisfaction With Clinical Training In Christian Psychology Doctoral Programs: Survey Findings And Implications, Mark R. Mcminn, Jennifer Lynn Bearse, Laura K. Heyne, Ryan C. Staley
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Perceptions of clinical training at seven explicitly Christian doctoral programs in clinical psychology were assessed with a satisfaction survey. A total of 228 students, 128 alumni, and 34 faculty completed the online questionnaire that entailed 20 satisfaction items. Factor analysis revealed three factors: Supervision and Support, Clinical Placements, and Professional Development. Of these, Supervision and Support received the highest satisfaction ratings and Professional Development the lowest. Overall, clinical training was perceived quite positively by respondents, and more highly than research training ratings reported in a previous study. Alumni and faculty reported greater satisfaction than current students.

Late Qing Dreams Of Modernity, Peter Zarrow
Late Qing Dreams Of Modernity, Peter Zarrow
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
I would like to alert China Beat readers to a new film, Datong: The Great Society [Chinese title: 大同:康有為在瑞典]. This docu-drama tells the story of Kang Youwei (1858-1927) and to a great extent that of his second daughter Kang Tongbi (aka Kang Tung Pih, 1887-1969).
I found the film a powerful and affecting evocation of a philosopher’s life, and found myself challenged to consider what we make of the past and what it makes of us. The film-maker, Evans Chan, calls Datong: The Great Society a “docu-drama,” since it is based on verifiable records, period photos, and vintage footage—as well …

Straight Out Of Wukan: A Quick Q & A With Journalist Rachel Beitare, Jeffrey Wasserstrom
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Earlier this year, a Beijing-based Israeli journalist named Rachel Beitare contacted me out of the blue to set up an interview about the impact the Arab Spring events might have in China. I ended up impressed by the caliber of the questions put to me, so I started keeping an eye out for her byline, in case she published things in English (much of her work comes out in Hebrew, which I don’t read). I wasn’t disappointed, as before long Foreign Policy ran a smart commentary, ”Guilty By Association,” in which Ms. Beitare looked at the way the Party had …

The pigs were being slaughtered in the streets when the news of Kim Jong Il’s death arrived in Dachuan, a small logging village in the mountains of western Sichuan province. Over the immense and extended cacophony of the blood-letting, the retired head of the local bank explained, with a bit of apologetic joy, that the villagers were getting ready for Spring Festival, then turned back to the news from Pyongyang, shaking his head at the retrograde tendencies of China’s Korean socialist brothers.

By drawing our attention to the previously unexamined question of space for student activism, Fabio Lanza has successfully remapped the May Fourth Movement, despite the fact that it is perhaps the most well-travelled terrain in historical research of modern China. This is not a revisionist study that seeks to de-center May Fourth in China’s passage from tradition to modernity by looking for pre-May Fourth modern experimentations and the continuity between the late Qing and May Fourth periods. In fact, Lanza travels back to the historical site of Beijing University (hereafter Beida) and the canonical moment of the May Fourth years …
When Things Go Wrong: Village Elections As A Process Creating Contention, Kerry Brown
When Things Go Wrong: Village Elections As A Process Creating Contention, Kerry Brown
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
At the heart of the big story of Chinese rural democracy is the many millions of smaller stories of those who have been touched by this immense process. Before looking at village elections, therefore, here is one single story, of one man, who tried to stand in a village election, and of what happened to him. It is concrete experiences of engaging in the whole process of rural democracy like this that give village democracy its tremendous significance and interest. This section is based on papers obtained in Beijing in August 2009.

With 300 million people playing Internet games in China, the question of how these games affect youth has captured the attention of the public and researchers alike. I first became interested in studying online gaming in 2002 when, as a language student in Harbin, China, I discovered the extent to which playing online games in Internet cafés had become a central part of social life for many urban youth. However, like any new technology, the growing popularity of games has also sparked growing fears about their potential to negatively impact society. In recent years the Chinese media has been full …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Why is “eating in Canton” (shi zai Guangzhou) known as the best in China? Seung-joon Lee’s lively and original study examines the peculiarities and politics of eating in Canton (Guangzhou) from Qing times to 1937. Using a delectable range of materials in Chinese, Japanese, and English, the book offers an illuminating entrée to the culture and political correctness of eating in modern Chinese history. As the author points out, few historical studies focus on food supplies. Many narrative histories of China, for instance, include sections on the Canton-based events of the 1920s when the Guomindang and the Chinese …

Book Review: Mao Zedong And China In The Twentieth-Century World, Jeremy Tai
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Mao Zedong may no longer be the sublime object of desire in China, but in recent decades his image has been continuously invoked and consumed in countless guises – both familiar and new – ranging from pop art portraits to the ubiquitous face of Chinese banknotes, from Cultural Revolution kitsch to the ObaMao souvenirs currently found in tourist traps around China. The reproduction of Mao in his various postmodern manifestations suggests a loss of meaning and depoliticization; at the same time, however, the deep-seated clash between sentimental and polemical cultural representations also makes clear that there is still much at …
