Impact Of Biofuels On Forestland In Central America, Ayako Ebata Jun 2008

Impact Of Biofuels On Forestland In Central America, Ayako Ebata

Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"

Although biofuels are thought to be one of the solutions for reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the net effects might be ambiguous when indirect land use effects are incorporated. Along with the increasing price of biofuel crops, forest lands might be destroyed throughout the world. In this study, the net effect of the increases in U.S. production of corn due to ethanol demand is explored in terms of additional land impacts and deforestation in Central America. I present data from FAO and Searchinger et al, where it is suggested that the Central American region has been in the process …

Building A Lightweight Future For American Transportation, Jennifer D. Schmidt Jun 2008

Building A Lightweight Future For American Transportation, Jennifer D. Schmidt

Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"

New materials are being sought out to replace steel in conventional American vehicles as a way to increase fuel efficiency. Carbon fiber composites are lightweight materials that could replace steel without decreasing strength or safety of a vehicle. These new composites have the possibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and increasing overall efficiency of a vehicle throughout its lifetime. Carbon fiber production has the potential to be less carbon intensive than steel production, and it could increase the efficiency of a manufacturing plant due to its compactness and to new technology. Fuel efficiency can be improved by using many techniques …

A Forgetting-Based Approach For Reasoning With Inconsistent Distributed Ontologies, Guilin Qi, Yimin Wang, Peter Haase, Pascal Hitzler Jun 2008

A Forgetting-Based Approach For Reasoning With Inconsistent Distributed Ontologies, Guilin Qi, Yimin Wang, Peter Haase, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In the context of multiple distributed ontologies, we are often confronted with the problem of dealing with inconsistency. In this paper, we propose an approach for reasoning with inconsistent distributed ontologies based on concept forgetting. We firstly define concept forgetting in description logics. We then adapt the notions of recoveries and preferred recoveries in propositional logic to description logics. Two consequence relations are then defined based on the preferred recoveries.

The Beginning Of The End For Chimpanzee Experiments?, Andrew Knight Jun 2008

The Beginning Of The End For Chimpanzee Experiments?, Andrew Knight

Experimentation Collection

The advanced sensory, psychological and social abilities of chimpanzees confer upon them a profound ability to suffer when born into unnatural captive environments, or captured from the wild – as many older research chimpanzees once were – and when subsequently subjected to confinement, social disruption, and involuntary participation in potentially harmful biomedical research. Justifications for such research depend primarily on the important contributions advocates claim it has made toward medical advancements. However, a recent large-scale systematic review indicates that invasive chimpanzee experiments rarely provide benefits in excess of their profound animal welfare, bioethical and financial costs. The approval of large …

Primer On Medicare Advantage Payments In 2008, Brian Biles, Emily Adrion

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) included provision intended to increase the role of private health plans in Medicare. These provisions, building on policies adopted earlier in 1997 and 2000, set Medicare Advantage (MA) plan benchmark rates at levels higher than average costs in tradition free-for-service Medicare in every county in the nation. The total amount of extra payments to Medicare Advantage plans resulting from these policies total over $8.5 billion in 2008 and over $82 billion over the five year period between 2009 and 2013.

This briefing paper outlines the three major Medicare policies that generate these extra …

How Children Tell: Containing The Secret Of Child Sexual Abuse, Rosaleen Mcelvaney Jun 2008

How Children Tell: Containing The Secret Of Child Sexual Abuse, Rosaleen Mcelvaney

Other resources

In recent years, research on the subject of child sexual abuse disclosures has seen an increase in the use of qualitative methods to explore individual experiences, reflecting an emphasis on understanding diversity rather than typicality. This research study builds on previous work that viewed disclosure as a process that occurs over time, influenced by both anticipated reactions and actual reactions that in turn influence future decisions about disclosing. The study has as its fundamental focus the experience of telling. Interviews were conducted with young people aged 8 to 19 years (n=22), parents (n=21) and adults who had experienced sexual abuse …

Understanding Declining Mobility And Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak Jun 2008

Understanding Declining Mobility And Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak

Economics - All Scholarship

We model interhousehold transfers between nomadic livestock herders as the state-dependent consequence of individuals' strategic interdependence resulting from the existence of multiple, opposing externalities. A public good security externality among individuals sharing a social (e.g., ethnic) identity in a potentially hostile environment creates incentives to band together. Self-interested interhousehold wealth transfers from wealthier herders to poorer ones may emerge endogenously within a limited wealth space as a means to motivate accompanying migration by the recipient. The distributional reach and size of the transfer are limited, however, by a resource appropriation externality related to the use of common property grazing lands. …

Academic Ethics, Martha C. Spears Jun 2008

Academic Ethics, Martha C. Spears

Organization Management Journal

With an increased emphasis on the topic of ethics in business, more attention has been focused on the college campus and how students are introduced to ethical issues. The question often asked is how ethics is being taught in business school classrooms and whether students are receptive to these messages. Are faculty members considered ‘‘more ethical’’ and, therefore, able to teach students to be ethical citizens? Alternatively, is it the experience and broad knowledge rather than the individual’s behavior that qualifies a professor? Students, in turn, are influenced by the opinions their professors express in classroom discussions. This paper recognizes …

Discerning Leadership Perceptions Of Central Eurasian Managers: An Exploratory Analysis, Kiran M. Ismail, David L. Ford Jr. Jun 2008

Discerning Leadership Perceptions Of Central Eurasian Managers: An Exploratory Analysis, Kiran M. Ismail, David L. Ford Jr.

Organization Management Journal

This exploratory study examined the responses of Central Eurasian corporate, government, and non-governmental organization managers regarding their perceptions of work-related values of effective organizational leadership. The respondents were participants in a 2-week leadership development program held in Istanbul, Turkey. Two inter-related research questions regarding leadership concepts and challenges were explored through content analysis of program intake interview protocols. The participants’ pre-program perspectives on what constituted effective organizational leadership were found to be consistent with the GLOBE Project’s culturally endorsed leadership dimensions. Moreover, several common patterns of behaviors and challenges were uncovered that could be attributed to particular idiosyncrasies in the …

Is Talking Online To Unknown People Always Risky? Distinguishing Online Interaction Styles In A National Sample Of Youth Internet Users., Janis Wolak, David Finkelhor, Kimberly J. Mitchell Jun 2008

Is Talking Online To Unknown People Always Risky? Distinguishing Online Interaction Styles In A National Sample Of Youth Internet Users., Janis Wolak, David Finkelhor, Kimberly J. Mitchell

Sociology

Abstract

We examined the risk of unwanted online sexual solicitations and characteristics associated with four online interaction styles among youth Internet users. The interaction styles took into account the people with whom youth interacted online (people known in person only, unknown people met through face-to-face friends, unknown people met in chatroom, and other places online) and high- and low-risk patterns of online behavior. The aim was to provide a basis for identifying which youth may be most at risk from interacting online with unknown people.

A Social Relations Model Of Everyday Talk And Relational Satisfaction In Stepfamilies, Paul Schrodt, Jordan Soliz, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examined the intrapersonal and interpersonal mechanisms underlying reported frequencies of everyday talk and relational satisfaction in stepfamilies. Participants included a parent, stepparent, and child from 114 stepfamilies (N = 342) from the Midwest and Southwest regions of the United States. Social relations model analyses revealed that everyday talk and relational satisfaction vary across stepfamily relationships as a function primarily of actor and relationship effects. Stepparents’ reports of everyday talk with the parent (i.e., their spouse) varied primarily as a function of actor effects, whereas reports of both children’s and parents’ satisfaction with the stepparent varied primarily as a …

The Impact Of Honor Codes On Academic Cheating Within Liberal Arts Colleges, Heather M. O'Neill, Christian A. Pfeiffer Jun 2008

The Impact Of Honor Codes On Academic Cheating Within Liberal Arts Colleges, Heather M. O'Neill, Christian A. Pfeiffer

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Many researchers study the subject of collegiate cheating by focusing on demographic characteristics of cheaters at schools of varying sizes. Other researchers examine whether collegiate honor codes can abate rampant cheating. A third group studies whether perceptions of what students believe to be cheating behaviors affects actual cheating. This paper incorporates previous research and develops a model of academic cheating based on three sets of incentives - moral, social and economic – and how they affect self-reported cheating behaviors at liberal arts colleges. An on-line survey was administered to students from three liberal arts colleges in spring 2008. The nearly …
