The Dirt On China Reporting, Pierre Fuller
The Dirt On China Reporting, Pierre Fuller
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Reporting China for a Western readership gets a whole lot easier once you master the discursive montage of cheap China associations. When discussing the Chinese state, for example, plug in Orwell. When referencing anything in the period 1949-1976, plug in Mao. If, say, your topic is changing environmental behavior among the Chinese, ascribe it only to orders from the “new emperors” above; national pride could also do. And so on. A recent International Herald Tribune and New York Times website report, “Smoke Clears, Dust Does Not in Beijing,” follows the formula to a T.

We contribute to feminist and gender scholarship on cultural notions of motherhood by analyzing the importance of motherhood among mothers and non-mothers. Using a national probability sample (N = 2,519) of U.S. women ages 25-45, we find a continuous distribution of scores measuring perceptions of the importance of motherhood among both groups. Employing OLS multiple regression, we examine why some women place more importance on motherhood, focusing on interests that could compete with valuing motherhood (e.g., education, work success, leisure), and controlling for characteristics associated with becoming a mother. Contrary to cultural schemas that view mother and worker identities …

Multi-Level Environmental Governance : A Comparative Case Study Of Five Large Scale Natural Resource Management Programs, Shpresa Halimi
Multi-Level Environmental Governance : A Comparative Case Study Of Five Large Scale Natural Resource Management Programs, Shpresa Halimi
Dissertations and Theses
Globalization is occurring at an unprecedented pace through the end of the twentieth century and into the new millennium. In such a world, governance is increasingly shared among governments, civil society organizations and businesses. Globalization has placed new demands on environmental management across national borders. Hence, changes in the environmental governance frameworks are required to create the enabling conditions for the effective management of the natural resources and the environment.
This study seeks to develop an integrated "Multi-level Environmental Governance" (MLEG) framework and to explore the relationship between the core characteristics of the framework and the achievements of large scale …

Liu Si (6/4)–Part 2, Looking Forward
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
This is the second part of our commemoration of Liu Si. Here, instead of looking backward (though some links include information about the past), our focus is on the present and the future. We point our readers to pieces that take up the contemporary meaning of the 1989 protests and the crackdown that followed, or assess the current state of Tiananmen-related issues, such as patterns of protest and human rights.

Understanding The New Farm Income Safety Net, Bradley D. Lubben
Understanding The New Farm Income Safety Net, Bradley D. Lubben
Cornhusker Economics
The new farm bill recently enacted by Congress includes some major changes in the farm income safety net that will affect producer sign-up and risk management decisions over the 2008- 2012 life of the bill. With current commodity prices at levels high above the existing price-based farm income safety net, many producers have assumed the impact of the farm program will be minimal for the life of the new bill. However, the changes in the new farm bill, particularly the inclusion of two new revenue-based programs, demand a much closer look on the part of producers.
Assessing Item And Scale Sensitivity To Therapeutic Change On The College Adjustment Scales: Working Toward A Counseling Center Specific Outcome Questionnaire, Christian L. Wimmer
Assessing Item And Scale Sensitivity To Therapeutic Change On The College Adjustment Scales: Working Toward A Counseling Center Specific Outcome Questionnaire, Christian L. Wimmer
Theses and Dissertations
Many college counseling centers use outcome measures to track therapeutic change for their clientele. These questionnaires have traditionally looked primarily at a client's symptom distress (e.g. depression, anxiety, suicidality, etc.) and are used to detect changes in the client's life that are due to therapy. Unfortunately, there is no measure that has been exclusively created and validated for use with college students. The College Adjustment Scales (CAS) form a multidimensional psychological measure designed specifically for use in college and university settings. Even though the CAS was created as a screening tool, it contains items that provide insight into changes that …

Net Impact Evaluation Of Michigan's Jet (Jobs, Education, And Training) Program, Randall W. Eberts
Reports
The purpose of this study is to estimate the net impact of Michigan's JET (Jobs, Education, and Training) program. JET marks a change in the way the State of Michigan provides services to increase the economic opportunities of its low-income residents. In 2004, directors of the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG) created the Workforce Action Network (WAN), a group representing workforce development professionals, educators, advocacy organizations, human services agencies, and state and local government staff. The directors charged WAN with developing a set of comprehensive recommendations to strengthen the state's Work …

Last October, when the CCP held its 17th congress, CNN reported the event with the headline “China rules out copying Western democracy.” My first reaction to this headline was, So what? That spontaneous reaction might have been an unconscious consequence of my reading Political Confucianism by Jiang Qing (蒋庆), a contemporary Confucian in China. In this book Last October, when the CCP held its 17th congress, CNN reported the event with the headline “China rules out copying Western democracy.” My first reaction to this headline was, So what? Biofuels: A Molecular Perspective, Brody Crowe
Biofuels: A Molecular Perspective, Brody Crowe
Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"
What is the best biomass source and conversion process to create the biofuels to power our country in the future? Specifically, is cellulosic ethanol capable of becoming a viable biofuel? To answer these questions, the processes used to convert biomass into fuel, as well as the biomass itself, were examined on a molecular level, focusing on the chemistry behind the reactions. After that, developing technologies were examined to determine their potential. Lastly, alternative biomass sources were examined. Given recent mandates and developing technologies, the United States is capable of developing a thriving cellulosic ethanol industry. In addition, algae has shown …
State Policies In The North Central Region Promoting Ethanol, Laura Demmel
State Policies In The North Central Region Promoting Ethanol, Laura Demmel
Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"
The government has played a major role in supporting the progress of the ethanol industry. This paper examines what influence state governments have had and presently have in the development, production, and expansion of ethanol manufacturing. A vast array of subsidies, mandates, and other government supports are utilized in planning, constructing, producing, and expanding ethanol facilities as well as promoting and influencing greater ethanol consumption. Three general areas are considered in this paper: outlinked support, factors of production subsidies, and intermediate goods subsidies. This paper examines state subsidies specifically found within a twelve-state area, known as the North Central Region …

Solar Energy: A Fresh Look At The Sun, Sarah Kruse
Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"
This paper was my attempt to give solar energy a voice in the midst of discussion about the growing problems with global warming, fossil fuels, and bio-fuels. In reading and studying these topics, it becomes clear that with or without considering the damage fossil fuels are doing to the planet, there are many economic and political reasons to seriously consider alternative sources of energy. However, switching to new sources should be done with careful consideration of their own pros and cons. In my reading about solar energy, the pros seemed undeniable and the cons seemed surmountable. Solar energy has not …

Carbon Farming: A Look At Carbon Sequestration In Agriculture, Joshua Van De Walle
Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"
Everywhere you look, there is someone talking about global warming or the environment. Currently, there is a lot of hype about the ethanol industry. People are genuinely interested in the environment, perhaps more than ever before. Therefore, I decided to write this paper on the carbon farming and how farmers can capture the economic benefit of sequestering carbon. I will explain the importance of carbon sequestration, what a cap-and-trade policy is, the ability for agriculture to help out, ways in which the farmer can help out, and how offsets can be provided by the newly created Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX).
China And Global Warming, Andrew Hassing
China And Global Warming, Andrew Hassing
Papers from "UHON395 Carbonomics: Can Bioenergy save the World?"
China has recently become the world’s greatest greenhouse gas emitter, surpassing the United States. The unprecedented growth of the economy and population surpassed all expectations. Coal is the cheapest and most abundant source of energy for this expansion. Also, worries of energy dependence complicate the matters. The effects of global warming can be seen throughout the countryside. Although it does not currently have any mandatory emission regulations, China has put forth many initiatives to reverse this trend. More efficient technology is in development, such as advanced coal uses. Other sources of energy like hydroelectric, solar, wind, bio, and nuclear are …

When anthropology student (and later, novelist) Amitav Ghosh set out from Oxford to Egypt in 1980 to find a suitable subject for his research, he may not have suspected the impact the trip would have on his life. He succeeded in completing the required tome for his degree and then went on to write In an Antique Land (1992), an unusually constructed book that deals with themes of historical and cultural displacement, with alienation and something we might these days, under the influence of postcolonial theory, call "subaltern cosmopolitanism." Others might recognize the genre in which Ghosh is writing as …
