Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A wavelet estimator f*(x) of an unknown probability density function f(x)∈L2(R) is considered. A conditional central limit theorem for martingales is used to show that ∫([f *(x) − f (x)]^2)dx is asymptotically normally distributed. Results obtained can be used in a test of goodness-of-fit.

A Modified X̄ Control Chart For Samples Drawn From Finite Populations, Michael B. C. Khoo

The X̄ chart works well under the assumption of random sampling from infinite populations. However, many process monitoring scenarios may consist of random sampling from finite populations. A modified X̄ chart is proposed in this article to solve the problems encountered by the standard X̄ chart when samples are drawn from finite populations.

Olfactory detection has become a science of interest. Seven individuals’ odor detection abilities are explored and an attempt is made to characterize all subjects with one generalized linear mixed effects model. Two methods of fitting the models were used and simulations were conducted to discover which method yielded the best results.

Type I error rate of a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach for investigating differential item functioning (DIF) in short scales was studied. Muthén’s SEM model for DIF was examined using a covariance matrix (Jöreskog, 2002). It is conditioned on the latent variable, while testing the effect of the grouping variable over-and-above the underlying latent variable. Thus, it is a multiple-indicators, multiple-causes (MIMIC) DIF model. Type I error rates were determined using data reflective of short scales with ordinal item response formats typically found in the social and behavioral sciences. In response, after-school programs have been implemented to support cognitive and communal development of these at-risk youth. Technology can play a role in after-school by expanding the boundaries of the traditional classroom. This study evaluates the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Technology Center (MLK CTC) After-School Program between August 2006 and July 2007. Methods. Treatment for cancer has been indicated to negatively impact the quality of life for patients. Specifically, chemotherapy has been associated with fatigue, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. More recently, chemotherapy has also been found to be related to cognitive impairment in various cognitive domains including working memory, information processing speed, and visual attention. At this time, the mechanisms underlying this impairment are not understood and there is currently no treatment for this condition. The needs of women offenders may be qualitatively different than the needs of male offenders. The “pathways” and “gender-responsive” perspectives of female offending have recently garnered attention in both practitioner and scholarly arenas. The pathways perspective focuses attention on the co-occurrence and effects of trauma, substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and mental illness on female offending, while the gender-responsive perspective also suggests that problems related to parenting, childcare, and self-concept issues are important needs of women offenders. Women in the first decade of the 21st century encounter competing ideologies of traditional femininity and empowered femininity. Language, in particular Discourse Analysis, provides a means for investigating what these ideologies, or discourses, are and how they are perpetuated. One source of language which encodes and perpetuates ideologies of femininity is women's magazines. As pervasive, monthly texts directed specifically at women, women's magazines provide a rich source of contemporary ideologies of femininity. This research used both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explore the possible effects and functions that advertising may perform in developing individuals' attitudes. Using the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1984) and Cultivation Theory (Gerbner, 1979), advertising is viewed as a frequently repeated, consistent set of messages that reinforce consumer ideas and values. The net effect of advertising is examined through focus group discussion of high-media/high-materialist individuals. Results of the study show four themes emerging from advertising (advertisements as an entrance to participation in culture, advertisements as a landscape, advertisements as validation and legitimacy, and advertisements as need-generators). Introduction: This report examines demographic and socioeconomic factors concerning New York City based Latinos in 2006.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

Results: New York City’s Latino population increased by 2.6% between 2005 and 2006. The 2006 data underscore the significant transformations that have been occurring within the Latino population of New York City since the end of large-scale Puerto Rican migration in …

Studies of mass media show that sexual content has increased during the past three decades and is now commonplace. Research studies have examined the sexual content of many media, but not talk radio. A subcategory of talk radio, called “shock jock” radio, has been repeatedly accused of being indecent and sexually explicit. This study fills in this gap in the literature by presenting a short history and an exploratory content analysis of shock jock radio. The content analysis compares the sexual discussions of two radio talk shows: Infinity’s Howard Stern Show and Clear Channel’s Bob & Tom Show.

The 8MSP was a formal meeting of the 156 States which have accepted the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction. It was held in accordance with Article 11 of the Convention and pursuant to the decisions of the 2004 First Review Conference and the 2006 Seventh Meeting of the States Parties (7MSP).

Vulnerability to earthquake disasters in mountainous regions frequently escapes investigation and analysis. The tragic and costly earthquake disasters that have recently occurred in Central Asia have spurred important questions among local, regional, and international policymakers, scientists, and social activists regarding the root causes of earthquake vulnerability. Drawing on an analysis of recent earthquake disasters in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, this article explores the concept of “seismic culture” (Degg and Homan 2005) in relation to vulnerability.
