Virtual microscopy has replaced microscopes representing a sea change in how microscopic anatomy is taught at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU).

The class of 2009 inaugurated virtual microscopy made possible by updating a wet laboratory with new computer stations. Virtual microscopy retains the learning features of microscopes while promoting the learning of relationships through small group interactions. Multi-station computers, equipped with new hardware technology that allows up to 5 monitors and keyboards to run from a single CPU, were installed providing a cost and space effective way to bring virtual microscopy to a large number of students in a small group …

Introduction This study is an analysis of associations between optimism and other psychological well-being indicators among people over age 65 in the U.S. The analysis is based on a stratified random sample collected in 2001 (Wave 1) with a 2004 follow up (Wave 2). The original survey was restricted to African American and Caucasian respondents who were "Christian." The purpose of this study is to provide social workers a better understanding of the function of well-being, particularly optimism, among older people. Illegal immigration is one of the most divisive domestic policy issues facing the United States and one could argue the absence of a solution may stem from a misunderstanding of how the public feels about illegal immigration. This survey explores the attitudes people have towards issues surrounding illegal immigration. The results indicate that attitudes towards illegal immigration vary according to demographics, but they also suggest there is more agreement over the issues than disagreement, regardless of demographics. Very little attention has been paid to how well these seceded states fared at self-governance. This thesis proposes a theory to explain the behavior of the governments of seceded states and examines three variables to determine how politically stable seceded states may be. In a city of 211,000, in a county where one in five earn less than the $10 an hour required to afford a modest apartment, one in twenty-five houses is a steel-framed aluminum home. An estimated 5,412 Boiseans occupy 2,706 manufactured houses in 50 mobile home parks. Half are seniors with a median annual income of $20,000. Most are female. Nearly half have a chronic medical condition. One in four rent space in a park listed for sale or slated for redevelopment. Spatial and temporal data are critical components in many applications. This is especially true in analytical domains such as national security and criminal investigation. Often, the analytical process requires uncovering and analyzing complex thematic relationships between disparate people, places and events. Fundamentally new query operators based on the graph structure of Semantic Web data models, such as semantic associations, are proving useful for this purpose. However, these analysis mechanisms are primarily intended for thematic relationships. Affective decision-making (ADM) is a refutable and predictive theory of individual choice under risk and uncertainty. It generalizes expected utility theory by positing the existence of two cognitive processes — the “rational” and the “emotional” process. Observed choice is the result of their simultaneous interaction. We present a model of affective choice in insurance markets, where risk perceptions are endogenous.

Affective decision-making is a strategic model of choice under risk and uncertainty where we posit two cognitive processes — the “rational” and the “emotional” process. Observed choice is the result of equilibirum in this intrapersonal game. As an example, we present applications of affective decision-making in insurance markets, where the risk perceptions of consumers are endogenous. We then derive the axiomatic foundation of affective decision making, and show that, although beliefs are endogenous, not every pattern of behavior is possible under affective decision making.

This volume, comprised of two parts: text and plates, presents the results of the excavations at Tell el-Qudeirat, located in an oasis in the northern Sinai desert and identified as biblical Kadesh Barnea. The excavations, which took place over ten seasons (1976–1982), revealed a stratigraphic sequence of three superimposed Iron Age fortresses. The plans and architecture of the fortresses, as well as the pottery, including the family of ‘Negebite Ware’, are described.

The ITSACORR method (Crosbie, 1993, 1995) is evaluated for the analysis of two-phase interrupted time-series designs. It is shown that each component of the ITSACORR framework (including the structural model, the design matrix, the autocorrelation estimator, the ultimate parameter estimation scheme, and the inferential method) contains fatal flaws.

Multiple Comparison Of Medians Using Permutation Tests, Scott J. Richter, Melinda H. Mccann

A robust method is proposed for simultaneous pairwise comparison using permutation tests and median differences. The new procedure provides strong control of familywise error rate and has better power properties than the median procedure of Nemenyi/Levy. It can be more powerful than the Tukey-Kramer procedure using mean differences, especially for nonnormal distributions and unequal sample sizes.

The Chi-square distribution is used quite often in Monte Carlo studies to examine statistical power of competing statistics. The power spectrum of the t-test, Wilcoxon test, and permutation t test are compared under various degrees of freedom for this distribution. The two t tests have similar power, which is generally less than the Wilcoxon.

Robust estimators have been developed and tested for symmetric distributions via simulation studies. The primary objective was to show that they are more efficient than the sample mean when used in conjunction with asymmetric distributions. Little attention has been given to how they perform on data that are from asymmetric distributions, or from distributions that have inherent anomalies (messy data). Thus, the behavior of hinge estimators using sensitivity curve are examined.

Researchers evaluated a ratio imputation technique used at the US Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering, which is an annually conducted cross-sectional establishment survey. Standardized bias was used, mean square error and relative bias to appraise this imputation method on point and variance estimates via simulations.

"The current global political atmosphere is steeped in fear of, and intense rhetoric about, political violence and "terrorism." Amidst this turbulent environment, it is clear that scholars and practitioners need to get beyond the manufactured fear and the hysterical rhetoric, peddled by what we call the corporate-state-military-media complex (or simply, the "power complex"), and instead seek a deeper understanding of political groups that defend or deploy the tactics of economic sabotage (property destruction) or armed struggle in order to change repressive and violent social structures (Best and Nocella 2004; Best and Nocella 2006). In 2004, a group of Illinois librarians was awarded a research grant to assess the state of Illinois’ science serial collection. This collection assessment focused on academic libraries in the state, specifically those participating in the Consortium of Academic Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), but also including another 10 academic libraries in the state that do not belong to the consortium. Current serial subscription data were collected through both automated and manual means and the analysis was conducted in conjunction with Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System. Housing First is a housing and support services program that attempts to move the most disabled homeless people directly to housing prior to treatment, using housing as the transforming element to support participation in treatment. This approach does not require sobriety or participation in long-term treatment programs unlike the traditional continuum of care approach. The objective of this preliminary study was to examine the extent to which affective marital interaction related to depressive symptoms in persons with chronic pain and their spouses and to pain severity in persons with pain. Couples from the community completed self-report surveys and engaged in a videotaped conversation on a topic of mutual disagreement that was coded for three affect types (i.e., anger/contempt, sadness, humor). Humor was positively related to marital satisfaction in both partners. Spouse anger/contempt and sadness were positively related to depressive symptoms in spouses. Coverage for Welch’s technique was less than the confidence-level when size was inversely proportional to variance and skewness was extreme. Under negative kurtosis, coverage for Yuen’s technique was attenuated. Under skewness and heteroscedasticity, coverage for Yuen’s technique was more accurate than Welch’s technique.
