Simulated Analysis Of Drought’S Impact On Different Cow-Calf Production Systems, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson Feb 2007

Simulated Analysis Of Drought’S Impact On Different Cow-Calf Production Systems, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Five representative, firm-level, stochastic simulation models were constructed using historical production cost, cattle prices, weather information and scientifically collected production data from the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory operated by the University of Nebraska. The five hundred iterative results indicate the inclusion of crop residual grazing is a viable drought mitigation tool.

The Origins Of U.S. Total Factor Productivity Growth In The Golden Age, Alexander J. Field Feb 2007

The Origins Of U.S. Total Factor Productivity Growth In The Golden Age, Alexander J. Field

Economics

A consideration of TFP growth in the United States during the golden age (1948–1973) raises two related questions: on the one hand why was it so strong and on the other hand, why were TFP growth rates lower than they were during the Depression years (1929–1941)? A continuing downward trend in TFP growth within manufacturing, and its declining share after World War II, provide answers to the latter question. A persisting productivity windfall associated with the build out of the surface road infrastructure helps answer the former question. By adopting a longer historical perspective, we can move beyond understanding the …

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2007

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past week I have revisited several years of Super Bowl columns. After re-reading each of them three questions have haunted me. What are the greatest moments of the absurd and sleaze kind in the history of the Super Bowl? Is it possible for anything associated with the Super Bowl this year to achieve the lofty heights set by previous Super Bowl Experiences? Is it possible for the Super Bowl to continue to grow in scale as it has done every year for the past forty years? These are the pressing questions that cry out for answers on the …

Using Ethanol As A Fuel To Reenergize Free Trade Area Of The Americas Negotiations, Marcel De Armas Feb 2007

Using Ethanol As A Fuel To Reenergize Free Trade Area Of The Americas Negotiations, Marcel De Armas

ExpressO

Currently the United States imposes a 2.5 percent ad valorem tax along with a 14.27 cents per liter tax on imported ethanol from countries with normal trade relations under the harmonized tariff schedule. However, the United States exempts many countries from this tariff or reduces the tariff under various free trade agreements or initiatives. The issues that resulted in Doha’s failure also caused FTAA negotiations to temporarily stall since both Brazil and the United States wanted certain FTAA issues negotiated at the WTO level. The United States could initiate this process with a discussion of reducing or eliminating its ethanol …

An Analysis Of Attendance At Major League Baseball Spring Training Games, Michael R. Donihue, David Findlay, Peter Newberry Feb 2007

An Analysis Of Attendance At Major League Baseball Spring Training Games, Michael R. Donihue, David Findlay, Peter Newberry

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the determinants of game-day attendance during Major League Baseball’s 2002 spring training season in Florida. Our model of game-day attendance includes location, quality of game, and time and weather variables. A censored Tobit estimation procedure is used to estimate our model. Our results indicate that the quality of the game, average ticket price, and several location-specific factors affect attendance. Specifically, our results suggest that changes in income have no effect on attendance while increases in ticket prices cause reductions in attendance. Furthermore, the estimated price elasticity of demand for Major League Baseball during the spring training season …

Spatial Inequality In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown Feb 2007

Spatial Inequality In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown

Working Papers in Economics

Despite success in reducing poverty over the last twenty years, inequality in Chile has remained virtually unchanged, making Chile one of the least equal countries in the world. High levels of inequality have been shown to hamper further reductions in poverty as well as economic growth and local inequality has been shown to affect such outcomes as violence and health. The study of inequality at the local level is thus crucial for understanding the economic well-being of a country. Local measures of inequality have been difficult to obtain, but recent theoretical advances have enabled the combination of survey and census …

Toward A New Economic Constitution: Judicial Disciplines On Trade Politics, Sungjoon Cho Feb 2007

Toward A New Economic Constitution: Judicial Disciplines On Trade Politics, Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

This article first observes that protectionism is an icon of trade politics and thus likely to gather fresh momentum as a domestic election approaches. The paper then problematizes protectionism beyond mere seasonal election politics by revealing its fatal pathologies both to the United States and to the rest of the world. Protectionism basically caters to the special interest at the expense of the larger public interest, which may be coined as a Madisonian constitutional failure. It also deviates from global trading norms, which the United States hypocritically continues to preach adherence to for the rest of the world. This double …

Sox And Whistleblowing, Richard E. Moberly Feb 2007

Sox And Whistleblowing, Richard E. Moberly

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Whistleblowers famously helped publicize the corporate scandals that gave rise to Sarbanes- Oxley: think Sherron Watkins at Enron and Cynthia Cooper at WorldCom—two of Time Magazine’s “Persons of the Year” for 2002. Given the importance of these employee disclosures, Congress considered it necessary to break the “corporate code of silence” that discouraged potential whistleblowers from coming forward. Indeed, SOX utilizes a unique holistic approach aimed at encouraging employees to disclose information about corporate wrongdoing.
