Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A hierarchical and standardized environmental disturbance index, specifically designed for karst landscapes, was created by van Beynen and Townsend (2005). To assess the applicability of the index and provide recommendations for its refinement, the index was applied in four west-central Florida counties and interviews were conducted with local and state officials, community planners, and land resource managers. The karst disturbance index consists of 30 indicators contained within five broad categories: geomorphology, hydrology, atmosphere, biota, and culture. Data was readily available for most environmental indicators used to construct the index. Overall, levels of disturbance vary between the counties due to the …

Economic Hardship And Children's Social Withdrawal In Romanian Families, Jennifer Denise Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact of perceived economic hardship on family processes and children's socially withdrawn (reticent) behaviors in Romania. The sample consisted of 121 Romanian mothers and fathers of 4-5 year old children, as well as children's kindergarten teachers. Drawing on Conger and colleagues' family stress model of economic hardship, the associations among mothers' and fathers' ratings of economic hardship, depression, marital conflict, psychologically controlling parenting, and teacher ratings of child social withdrawal were analyzed. Structural equation modeling using AMOS 7.0 was used to test the model. Findings generally support earlier studies with European American families, as well as …

Interpreter Competency Exam In Mental Health, Sergiy Barsukov Apr 2007

Interpreter Competency Exam In Mental Health, Sergiy Barsukov

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The issue of diversity has become one of the most salient among mental health professionals in the past few decades. As the American society becomes more and more diverse the need for professionals who can provide culturally competent services will continue to rise. One of the important aspects of culture is language. When serving clients who are monolingual it is not always possible to find a therapist who fluently speaks the client's language. Therefore, professionals often have to use interpreters in order to adequately serve their clients. Initial research on interpreter competence is concerning, with one study reporting an average …

Motivational Interviewing And Behavioral Compliance In Chronic Pain Patients: A Treatment Outcome Study, Jesse Frey Apr 2007

Motivational Interviewing And Behavioral Compliance In Chronic Pain Patients: A Treatment Outcome Study, Jesse Frey

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Multimodal treatment of chronic pain is often met by patient resistance. Although patients seek a cure for pain, some patients are resistant to alternative therapies or nonpharmacological interventions that may help them to manage chronic pain. Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic intervention that is known to work well with resistant behaviors often found in the addiction treatment setting. Until recently, few studies have examined the efficacy of a brief Motivational Interview within the chronic pain treatment setting. This study examined the effects of a single Motivational Interview on patient participation, prescription drug use, and responses on the Pain Stage of …

Contribution Of Public Support Agency Programs To Local New Firm Performance, Stephen Baker Braun

Dissertations and Theses

New and small firms make two indispensable contributions to the American economy: they generate change and competition through market structure changes and they are an essential vehicle by which hundreds of thousands of individuals enter the economic mainstream of American society. Small business formation is hailed as the "engine for economic growth," contributing more than 60 percent of net new jobs in the United States. The central issue of this dissertation is to understand the extent to which entrepreneurs are helped by government agency programs in assembling resources that contribute to the performance of new firms.
